  • The Fabry-Perot interferometer filters for UV meter were designed using the design program of optical thin films. From the data obtained, two filters were fabricated. The transmittance of two filter were measured by spectrophotometer in order to analysis their optical property. The transmittance was controlled by the thickness of Ag reflector and the wavelength of the transmission was controlled by the thickness of $SiO_2$ spacer. The two UV filters were fabricated by the RF magnetron sputtering which are the multilayers of [air/$SiO_2$(174.6 nm)|Ag(78 nm)|$SiO_2$(68 nm)|Ag(78 nm)|Cr(5 nm)|glass] and [air/$SiO_2$(174.6 nm)|Ag(S8 nm)|$SiO_2$(56 nm)|Ag(58 nm)|Cr(S nm)|glass]. One filter has the maximum transmittance of 6% at the about 370nm and it has the transmittance of below 0.2% at 400nm. The other filter can be found that the transmittance is increased as the thickness of Ag is decreased and the wavelength of the transmission is controlled by the thickness of $SiO_2$ spacer layer.

  • A strong antiferromagnetic coupling in Fe/Si multilayered films (MLF) had been recently discovered and much consideration has been given to whether the coupling in the Fe/Si MLF system has the same origin as the metal/metal MLF. Nevertheless, the nature of the interfacial ron silicide is still controversial. On one hand, a metal/ semiconductor structure was suggested with a narrow band-gap semiconducting $\varepsilon$-FeSi spacer that mediates the coupling. However, some features show that the nature of coupling can be well understood in terms of the conventional metal/metal multilayered system. It is well known that both magneto-optical (MO) and optical properties of a metal depend strongly on their electronic structure that is also correlated with the atomic and chemical ordering. In this study, the nature of the interfacial regions is the Fe/Si multilayers has been investigated by the experimental and computer-simulated MO and optical spectroscopies. The Fe/Si MLF were prepared by rf-sputtering onto glass substrates at room temperature with the number of repetition N=50. The thickness of Fe sublayer was fixed at 3.0nm while the Si sublayer thickness was varied from 1.0 to 2.0 nm. The topmost layer of all the Fe/Si MLF is Fe. In order to carry out the computer simulations, the information on the MO and optical parameters of the materials that may constitute a real multilayered structure should be known in advance. For this purpose, we also prepared Fe, Si, FeSi2 and FeSi samples. The structural characterization of Fe/Si MLF was performed by low- and high -angle x-ray diffraction with a Cu-K$\alpha$ radiation and by transmission electron microscopy. A bulk $\varepsilon$-FeSi was also investigated. The MO and optical properties were measured at room temperature in the 1.0-4.7 eV energy range. The theoretical simulations of MO and optical properties for the Fe/Si MLF were performed by solving exactly a multireflection problem using the scattering matrix approach assuming various stoichiometries of a nonmagnetic spacer separating the antiferromagnetically coupled Fe layers. The simulated spectra of a model structure of FeSi2 or $\varepsilon$-FeSi as the spacer turned out to fail in explaining the experimental spectra of the Fe/Si MLF in both intensity and shape. Thus, the decisive disagreement between experimental and simulated MO and optical properties ruled out the hypothesis of FeSi2 and $\varepsilon$-FeSi as the nonmagnetic spacer. By supposing the spontaneous formation of a metallic ζ-FeSi, a reasonable agreement between experimental and simulated MO and optical spectra was obtained.

  • Protective clothing for firefighters typically consists of a flame resistant outer shell and inner layers. The inner layers are generally composed of a moisture barrier and a thermal barrier. On performing the task in fire place the heat and perspiration generated from the body become trapped inside the protective clothing. Those heat and moisture result into heat-stress and physical fatigue of fire fighter, which hinder the work. Therefore, the system of clothing designs and material layers must be chosen carefully to balance protection and comfort. 3 kinds of protective clothing of 3 layer structure were used in the experiment of physiological comfort. From the comparison of wear trials with the 3 kinds of layers in firefighters clothing, it indicates that the moisture dissipation of A+B2+C was highest, following A+BI+C andA+B3+C. And the heat dissipation of A+BI+C and A+B2+C were better than A+B3+C. In the protective clothing with A+B3+C, heat and perspiration generated through exercise remained in clothing system long and caused discomfort.

  • Sliding wear tests have been performed to evaluate the effect of normal load decrease on the wear depth of nuclear fuel rods in room temperature air. The objectives of this study are to quantitatively evaluate the supporting ability of spacer grid springs, to estimate the wear depth by using the contacting force decrease and to compare the wear behavior with increasing test cycles (up to $10^7$) at each spring condition. The result showed that the contacting load decrease depends on the spring shape and the applied slip amplitude. The estimated wear depth is smaller when compared with measured wear depth. Based on the test results, the wear mechanism, the role of wear debris layer and the spring shape effect were discussed.

  • Using the Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP) incorporating van der Waals interaction, we have explored structural, adsorption, and magnetic properties of Ni(111)/BN/Co(111) systems. We have found that both Ni(111) and Co(111) layers shows half metallic state, while the spacer BN layer becomes weak metal for one monolayer (ML) thickness and an insulating barrier for two ML thickness. The half metallic states in both Ni(111) and Co(111) layers are robust because it is unchanged independently on the magnetic coupling of Ni(111) and Co(111). This finding suggests that the Ni(111)/BN/Co(111) systems can be utilized for perfect tunneling magnetoresistance system. Moreover, it can be applied for potential spin injecting into semiconductor in FM/semiconductor system due to the fact that the half metallic state in FM layers at the interface will be unchanged.

  • Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of Fe/Pt/Fe, Co/Pd/Co trilayers and also the sandwiches with wedge-shaped magnetic (Fe, Co) and nonmagnetic (Pt, Pd) layers were investigated. The oscillatory behavior of the saturation field $H_{s}$ of the studied trilayers with changing the thickness of the nonmagnetic layer (NML) $t_{NML}$ was revealed. That was explained by the exchange coupling between ferromagnetic layers (FML) through the nonmagnetic spacer. For the first time, oscillations of the transverse Kerr effect (TKE) with changing the Pt- and Pd-wedge thickness were discovered. Period of these oscillations was found to depend on the FML thickness and the photon energy of the incident light. TKE spectra of the examined samples were discovered to modify very strongly with increasing $t_{NML}$. The discovered peculiarities of magneto-optical properties of thin-film systems were explained by a concept of the spin-polarized quantum well states in the pt and Pd layers.

  • In this thesis, an analytical model for Ⅰ-Ⅴ characteristics of an n-AlGaAs/GaAs Delta doped HEMT is proposed. 2-dimensional electron gas density, and conduction band edge profile are calculated from a self-consistent iterative solution of the Poisson equation. Parameters, e.g., the saturation velocity, 2-dimensional electron gas concentration, thickness of the doped and undoped layer(AlGaAs, GaAs, spacer etc.,) are in good agreement with the independent calculations.

  • We report new polymer stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (PSFLC) cells with mechanical stability which is achievable by introducing photospacers in the cells. It was found that the mechanical st ability of the PSFLC cell was effected by introduction of photo spacers. We analyzed the dependence of mechanical stability and memory property on the density of photospacers in the PSFLC cell. The stability and memory properties of PSFLC Cells depending on photospacer density are discussed. 1. Introduction Recently, flexible displays have attracted much attention because they have remarkable advantages: thinner, lighter, non-breakable and conformable features. Flexible displays have various potential applications such as e-book and e-paper displays utilizing the distinct features. E-book and E-paper displays demand very low power consumption, so that bistable memory liquid crystal modes are required in case of flexible plastic LCDs for those application. Three kinds of memory LC modes have been developed; bistable nematic, bistable cholesteric and bistable FLC. Among them SSFLC as one of bistable FLC has big advantages such as low driving voltage, wide view angle and fast response time, SSFLC cells are, however, very weak against mechanical shock. Polymer stabilized FLC (PSFLC) has been developed to overcome the poor mechanical stability of SSFLC. PSFLC was known to have network structure that FLCs are oriented with smectic layer ordering in polymer network. The polymer network stabilizes the FLC orientation, which leads to improvement of mechanical stability of PSFLCD. A lot of studies have been done for the application of PSFLC to flexible $LCDs.^{[1{\sim}12]}$ However, it should be noted that PSFLC does not have sufficient mechanical stability for the particular applications such as smart card LCD, where LCD is highly bendable.Bead spacer was mainly used to maintain cell gap of conventional PSFLCDs. But the spacer density of it is not locally uniform in the cell, so that it is generally difficult that the PSFLCDs with bead spacers show sufficient mechanical stability. In order to more improve the mechanical stability of PSFLCDs, we introduced photospacers into PSFLCDs. In this paper, we describe the improvement of mechanical stability by introducing photospacers into PSFLCDs.
