FTSR(Flight Termination System Receiver) is a device that receives a ground command signal to abort a flight mission when abnormal conditions occur in the space launch vehicle. The secure tone command message shall consist of a series of 11 character tone pattern. Each character consists of the sum of two tones which taken from a set of 7 tones defined by IRIG(Inter-Range Instrumentation Group) in the audio frequency range. The MHA(Modified High alphabet) command adds a security feature to the secure tone command by using the predefined difference code. In order to check the function and performance of MHA FTSR, which is under development, for KSLV-II, the testbed should have functions of RF signal generation, receiver's output port monitoring, RS-422 communication and test data management. In this paper, we first briefly introduce MHA command and FTSR interface, and then show the LavVIEW based testbed include its H/W configuration, S/W implementation and test results.

The present study presents experimental results on the characteristics of emission spectra of kerosene/air swirl flames. The aviation fuel Jet A-1, which is used for the liquid rocket engines of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle, is used with three different swirlers to investigate the swirl strength effects. The emission spectra from the flames are measured with a spectrometer as the swirl strength and combustion air temperature are varied. Chemiluminescence intensities of $OH^*$, $CH^*$ and $C_2{^*}$ are identified from the spectra. The chemiluminescence intensities from the kerosene flames show sensitivity to the swirl strength and are affected by changes in the combustion air temperature. Among the three radicals of interest, $C_2{^*}$ show the most significant changes in chemiluminescence intensity with the swirl strength and equivalence ratio. The intensity ratios $I_{OH^*}/I_{CH^*}$ and $I_{C_2{^*}}/I_{CH^*}$ are adequate for indicating changes in the equivalence ratio with the air and fuel mass flow rates, respectively.

A 30-tonf-class fullscale thrust chamber for the application to a Low-Earth-Orbit Space Launch Vehicle has been combustion tested over the wide ranges of a mixture ratio and a chamber pressure. The thrust chamber designed for a pump-fed open cycle engine was tested with an ablative chamber instead of a regenerative one for the initial evaluation of its performance and function. The test results revealed stable combustion characteristics. The hardware survived the harsh environment and showed very sound functional characteristics. The measured combustion efficiency turned out to be 95% and a specific impulse at sea level was estimated as 254sec, which are comparable to or above the predetermined design values.

Hot-fire test facility is one of the most important infrastructure for thruster development and evaluation. During the past three years, Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and Hanwha Corporation have successfully performed the construction of hot-fire test facility for medium-scale monopellant thruster to the maximum 200N thrust level. In general, thruster hot-firing test should be performed in vacuum conditions to simulate space environment. The hot-fire test facility is divided into three subsystems, vacuum system, propellant supply system and data measurement & control system. The goal of this facility is to extend the capability from small thruster for satellite mission to medium-scale thruster for launch vehicle and lunar mission. In this paper, the progress and overview for thruster hot-fire test facility was introduced and test results were also presented.

Fuel-side cold-flow tests were performed on the technology demonstration model of a 75 ton-class liquid rocket engine combustion chamber for the first stage of the Korea space launch vehicle II. Pressure drop in the cooling channels of the combustion chamber was measured by changing fuel mass flow rate through a pressure regulating system. Pressure drop in each segment of the chamber could be obtained and a lot of pressure drop was caused by high flow velocity in the nozzle throat segment. The accuracy of a hydraulic analysis method for calculating a pressure loss in cooling channels could be verified by applying it to the cold-flow test conditions.

A poppet type shutoff valve under the pneumatic control has been adapted for the MOV (Main Oxidizer shutoff Valve) for KSLV (Korea Space Launch Vehicle). The MOV controls the supply of liquid oxygen into the combustion chamber just by opening and shutting operations. The poppet part of the poppet valves is usually connected with the piston, but on the other hand that of the MOV is separated and just contacted with the piston in order to secure the flexibility of the valve design. For the prevention of the collision with valve body by an undesirable movement of the piston part, it is necessary to evaluate the force during the valve closing. The analysis of the force balance of the MOV at the moment of the valve closing have been performed and some important design parameters for the force balance control have been introduced.

In this research, design results of computer hardware which control solid motor movable nozzle thrust vector control(TVC) actuator for Korea Space Launch Vehicle I(KSLV-I) are described. TVC computer hardware is the equipment which has jobs for receiving control commands from Navigation Guidance Unit(NGU) and then actuating TVC actuator. Also, it has ability to communicate with other on board or ground equipments. Computer hardware has a digital signal processor as the main processor which is capable of high speed calculating ability of control algorithm, so it can have more stability, reliability and flexibility than the previous analog controller of KSR-III. Target board was designed for on board program development and then first prototype hardware was developed. Top level system design criteria, hardware configurations and ground support equipment of TVC computer system are described.
This paper presents an experimental study of the leakage performance and endurance performance of a mechanical face seal in the 7-ton-class turbopump of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle 2 third-stage engine. We install a mechanical face seal between the fuel pump and turbine to prevent the mixing of the fuel and turbine gas. We design and manufacture a prototype mechanical face seal, which has two parts, namely, a bellows seal assembly and mating ring. We set up a test facility to measure the leakage and endurance of the mechanical face seal. For the similarity tests, we use water under real operating conditions such as high rotational speed, high temperature, and high pressure. Through investigation of the leakage and carbon wear rate, it is possible to evaluate the performance of the mechanical face seal. The results of the leakage and endurance performance test demonstrate the absence of any leakage from the prototype mechanical face seal after a trial run and clarify that the acceptable wear rate fully satisfies the turbopump requirements. Finally, we install a qualified mechanical face seal in a 7-ton-class turbopump and perform a validation test in the turbopump real-propellant test facility in the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. The test results confirm that the mechanical face seal works well under real operating conditions.

In this study, the soot formation characteristics of Jet-A1 liquid fuel droplet flames were investigated by measuring the soot concentration under atmospheric conditions similar to the working environment of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV) To obtain the desired atmospheric conditions, the oxygen concentration in the combustion chamber was maintained at 30% and the pressure was varied between 0.1 and 0.06 MPa. The full-field light extinction technique was used to measure the concentration of soot particles generated by applying the identical to 2-mm-diameter Jet-A1 fuel droplets. The soot concentration of the Jet-A1 droplet flames was the highest in the nitrogen-substituted atmosphere and the lowest in the carbon dioxide-substituted atmosphere, despite the pressure. the pressure was decreased the measured soot concentrations reduced as a function of Pn.
