  • Specimens of the spionid polychaetes (Polychaeta: Spionidae) were collected and examined in the subtidal shallow waters of Kwangyang Bay, southern coast of Korea, from April 1990 to November 1994. Five species of the genus Prionospio are described and illustrated: Prionospio (Minuspio) multibranchiata Berkeley, 1927, P. (Prionospio) saccifera Mackie and Hartley, 1990, P. (P.) bocki Soderstrom, 1920, P. (P.) membranacea Imajima, 1990, and P. (P.) paradisea Imajima, 1990. These five species of spionid polychaetes are reported for the first time in Korean waters.

  • A single specimen of Albula leptocephalus (55.7 mm SL) was collected from the southern coastal waters of Korea using an aquatic lamp. It is characterized by having a ribbon-like body with a small head and a well-forked caudal fin. Although the general appearance was similar to the leptocephalus of A. vulpes including myomere counts and fin ray counts, the melanophore deposition was different from that of A. vulpes. This leptocephalus specimen was confirmed with A. forsteri using the cytochrome b mtDNA (Cytb) analysis. The genetic distance of Cytb between the present leptocephalus and A. forsteri is 0.006-0.038, which falls into the cutoff point separating Albula species into eight deep lineages including the four valid species. Its genetic characteristic have more similarities to those of Fiji than those of Hawaii and the Northern territory of Australia.

  • Optical properties were studied in the costal waters of the southern part of Korea based on twenty oceanographic stations from 1 st to 9 th February, 1977. Submarine daylight intensity was measured by using an underwater luxmeter (Toshiba No.9). Daylight intensity in the upper 30m depth layer was measured at 1 m depth interval. The absorption coefficient of the sea water in the area ranged from 0.101 to 2.539 (mean 0.578). The Secchi-disc depth in the area ranged from 0.8 to 13 meters (mean 5.33 meters). The relationship between absorption coefficient (K) and transparency (D) was k= 1. 704/ D. The mean water color in the area was 5. 75 (3-9) in Forel scales. The rates of light penetration for daylight at 1m layer in the area ranged from 13.18 to 82. 05% and the mean was 59.56%, while the rate at 5m layer ranged from 0.007 to 46.1% and the mean was 18.47%.

  • We investigated the biological maturation of blackthroat seaperch Doederleinia berycoides in southern Korea waters, based on samples collected from March 2018 to February 2019. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and total length (TL) at 50%, 75% and 97.5% group maturity. The spawning period was May to October in 2018. We estimated the TL at 50% group maturity as 27.0 cm for females in 2018. We estimated the TL of females at 75% and 97.5% group maturity as 28.7 cm and 32.7 cm, respectively, in 2018.

  • Variations in abundance, size and population structure of Calanus sinicus were studied in the southern waters of Korea in connection with hydrographic conditions during 1991-1992. Abundance was high in April and low in August. This species was concentrated inshore of a coastal temperature front, or around the temperature front in April. The 1st-3rd copepodites dominated in February and April, and adults in August. The mean population stages in February and April were younger than those in other survey months. This suggests that this species mainly reproduced during winter-early spring. In prosome length, the 1st-4th copepodites were larger in April than in other survey months, and the 5th copepodite and adult were the largest in February. Mean prosome length of C. sinicus showed weak inverse relationship with sea water temperature, but it was not statistically evidenced.

  • We investigated the mass occurrence of the salp Salpa fusiformis during spring in the southern waters of Korea and the northern East China Sea. Abundance of S. fusiformis and dominant taxonomic groups including copepods, ostracods, euphausiids, and appendicularian was examined along with environmental factors (e.g., temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll-a concentration). The abundance of S. fusiformis at 27 stations ranged from 0 to $183\;inds\;m^{-3}$. Both aggregate and solitary forms of S. fusiformis occurred with a mean abundance of $62\;inds\;m^{-3}$ and $4\;inds\;m^{-3}$, and mean body length of 6.5 mm and 15.4 mm, respectively. Redundancy analysis showed that the abundance of S. fusiformis was negatively correlated with chlorophyll-a concentration, indicating the intensive grazing impact of S. fusiformis on phytoplankton. While the abundance of S. fusiformis increased, the species diversity of zooplankton community decreased. The abundances of total copepods and the dominant copepod species (e.g., adults and/or copepodites of Paracalansus parvus s.l., Calanus sinicus, Oithona similis, and Corycaeus affinis) also decreased with the increase of S. fusiformis abundance. However, the abundance of ostracods, euphausiids, and appendicularians was not affected by the mass occurrence of the salps. These results suggest that the mass occurrence of S. fusiformis in spring could negatively affect ecosystem conditions by changing trophodynamics in the zooplankton community.

  • Two brackish cyclopoid species are reported mostly from the estuaries and salt marshes in the southern coast of Korea: Limnoithona sinensis (Burckhardt, 1913) and Apocyclops borneoensis Lindberg, 1954. The two species as well as the genera are newly added to Korean fauna. Herein, the redescription is provided with the systematic accounts and detailed illustrations of them.
