  • For 262 locations throughout the southern part of Korean peninsula, intensities of 13 December 1996 Yeongweol earthquake are estimated to make an isoseismal map and investigate attenuation properties in the southern part of Korea. Due to the inherent uncertainties in the estimation of intensities, obtained intensity map show quite scattered pattern of intensity distribution. Estimated intensities range from III to possibly Ⅷ. In case of intensity larger than Ⅵ, considerable damages such as fracturing of walls are reported one of the most significant feature of the intensity map is, considering its magnitude 4.7 reported by KMA, the felt area is appeared to be unusually large covering most of the Korean peninsula except Cheju island. This result indicates ether the magnitude is underestimated or the focus of this earthquake is much deeper. Assuming shallow(less than 10km) intraplate earthquake, we obtained average magnitude 5.6 by using the area encircled by isoseismal contour lines from intensity IV to intensity Ⅶ. This ambiguity can be clarified if more reliable focal depth is estimated by using teleseismic earthquake records in the future.

  • The objective of the study is to develop attenuation equations of the ground motions in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. The earthquake source characteristics and the medium properties were estimated from available instrumental earthquake records and used as input parameters. The peak ground accelerations(PGA) and pseudo-velocity response spectra(PSV) were simulated by the random vibration theory. The attenuation equations for the PGA and PSV were constructed in terms of local magnitudes and hypocentral distances.

  • TO select the most suitable crop and variety of forage for nutrient quality at the southern part of Korea, the crop of wheat, barley and rye were grown from Oct. 1999 to June 2000. Paldanghomil variety of rye crop was shown to have the highest chemical components in comparison to other varieties of crops used in this experiment. It showed relatively high content of crude protein and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and low content of NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin. Therefore, it was concluded that paldanghomil of rye crop was the most suitable variety with high weight and high nutrient quality for forage in the southern part of Korea. The heritabilities of all nutrient quality characters were estimated to be high.

  • This study tries to reveal influence of artificial structure construction on shoreline change using DSAS 4.3. Before breakwater extension at the Gungchon Port, beaches at the study area were dominated by long-term erosion and especially, severe shoreline retreat was prevailed at the Wonpyeong Beach that is opened to offshore. During 2 years after the extension leading formation of shadow zone, the Gungchon Beach was rapidly developed due to sand supply to the shadow zone and then stabilized. The shadow zone only affected the northern part of the Wonpyeong Beach, while beaches from the southern part of the Wonpyeong Beach to the Munam Beach was little affected. Beach nourishment and groin construction led beach development at the northern part of the Wonpyeong Beach, while beach erosion from the southern part of the Wonypeong Beach to the Munam Beach was caused by the groin. This study suggests that sufficient consideration before coastal structure construction should be made regardless of purposes.

  • The Lago Sofia conglomerate in southern Chile is a deep-marine gravelly deposit, which is hundreds of meters thick and kilometers wide and extends laterally for more than 100 km, filling the foredeep trough of the Cretaceous Magallanes Basin. For understanding the depositional processes and environments of this gigantic deep-sea conglomerate, detailed analyses on sedimentary facies, architecture and paleoflow patterns were carried out, highlighting the differences between the northern (Lago Pehoe and Lago Goic areas) and southern (Lago Sofia area) parts of the study area. The conglomerate bodies in the northern part occur as relatively thin (< 100 m thick), multiple units intervened by thick mudstone-dominated sequences. They show paleoflows toward ENE and S to SW, displaying a converging drainage pattern. In the southern part, the conglomerate bodies are vertically interconnected and form a thick (> 400 m thick) conglomerate sequence with rare intervening fine-grained deposits. Paleoflows are toward SW. The north-to-south variations are also distinct in sedimentary facies. The conglomerate bodies in the southern part are mainly composed of clast-supported conglomerate with sandy matrix, which is interpreted to be deposited from highly concentrated bedload layers under turbidity currents. Those in the northern part are dominated by matrix- to clast-supported conglomerate with muddy matrix, which is interpreted as the products of composite mass flows comprising a turbidity current, a gravelly hyperconcentrated flow and a mud-rich debris flow. All these characteristics suggest that the Lago Sofia conglomerate was formed in centripetally converging submarine channels, not in centrifugally diverging channels of submarine fans. The tributaries in the north were dominated by mass flows, probably affected by channel-bank failures or basin-marginal slope instability processes. In contrast, the trunk channel in the south was mostly filled by tractive processes, which resulted in the vertical and lateral accretion of gravel bars, deposition of gravel dunes and filling of scours and channels, similar to deposits of terrestrial gravel-bed rivers. The trunk channel developed along the axis of foredeep trough and its confinement within the trough is probably responsible for the thick, interconnected channel fills. The large-scale architecture of the trunk-channel fills shows an eastward offset stacking pattern, suggesting that the channel migrated eastwards most likely due to the uplift of the Andean Cordillera.

  • The study on the variation coefficient of water temperature and salinity was comducted during the year from 1968 to 1980 in the Southern Sea of Korea. The results obtaland from the study as followes; 1. The variation coefficient of water temperature and salinity wewe large either at the front area or the thermocline and malocline area. 2. The variation coefficient of water temperature was the largest at the time when the power was strong ty each water mass(The largest value in Tsushima and Yellow Sea Warm Current area was occurred at the 50m layer in the Summer, and that in the South Korean Coastal Water area and the Southern Part of Yellow Sea was at all layer in the Winter). 3. The variation coefficient of salinity was the largest at the surface layer in warm current area that was influenced by the low salinity of the East China Coastal Water in the Summer ,and that of salinity in the South Korean Coastal Water area and Soutern Part of Yellow Sea was nearly half of the value of the warm current area.

  • The authors analyzed the daily catch data which were obtained from two different regions at the Southern Sea in Korea, Neungpo, Geoje island and Yangwhagum, Namhae island, during three or four years in 1978, 1981-1985, in order to know the fishing characteristics of the set net fisheries. The favorable fishing season was summer in the southern sea. The total catches during one year were greatly affected by those several day when the dominant species of fish were caught in large quantities. The dominant species of fish at Neungpo were little horse mackerel, sand lance, sardine, hair tail, spanish mackerel and common mackerel, and those at Yangwhagun were anchovy, little horse mackerel, sardine, spanish mackerel and gizzard shad, in order of catch. Especially, the little horse mackerel and the sardine appeared to make up very big schools at both Neungpo and Yangwhagum. The occurrence seasons of the dominant species were different by the region, but generally those were earlier at western part than at eastern part of the Southern Sea in Korea.

  • This study aimed at quantifying the impact of envelope insulation on energy consumption for thermal controls in residential buildings in southern part of Korea. A series of parametric simulations for a range of R-values of walls, roof, floor, and windows were computationally conducted for a prototypical Korean detached house. Analysis revealed that the total amount of heat gain was larger than that of heat loss, while the amount of energy for cooling was smaller than that for heating due to the difference of system efficiency; the envelope heat transfer was more significant for the heat loss, thus, the increase of the envelope insulation was more effective to reduce heating load; and there were certain levels of envelope insulation after which the energy saving effect was not significant. These findings are expected to be a fundamental database for the decision of proper insulation level in Korean residential buildings.

  • The purpose of this preliminary study is the applied to geology using the Landsat TM satellite image of the Tanggung area of southern part of the Bandung, Indonesia to provide basic information for geological survey. For this, topography, geology and satellite image were constructed to spatial database. Digital elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, hill shade of topography were calculated from the topographic database and lithology was imported from the geological database. Lineament, lineament density, and NDVI were extracted the Landsat TM satellite image. The results showed the close relationship between geology and terrain and satellite image. Each sedimentary rock seldom corresponds with geology and analyses of topography but as a whole for sedimentary rocks coincide with them. Tuff and volcanic breccia in the volcanic rocks correspond with the result of terrain analyses. Talus deposits is well matched with the analyses of opography/satellite image.

  • A seismic attenuation formula is derived from the intensity maps of medium sized four earthquakes that occurred in the southern part of Korean peninsula. In order to obtain the seismic attenuation formula, the the coefficients of four attenuation equations representing the intensity maps are integrated using the proper weighting factors depending on the credibility of the data are assigned to. The proposed formula shows the trend of attenuation similar to the ones for the Eastern North America for the region within the epicentral distance of 200km, but produces higher attenuation at farther distances. Though the attenuation curve is not derived from the instrumental data, the result could be a useful tool for the analysis of seismic hazard in Korean peninsula.
