The oceanographical condition of the southeastern area off Korea is inverestigated in the point of view of the fluctuation of the thermal front. although the fearure of the front is somewhat complicate, it can be classified intl three types. the first type is elongated toward north with the narrow cold water belt inside the front. The second type is almost parallel with the latitude of 36 N and the third type is the irregular one in which the cyclonic cold water mass and the anticyclonic warm water mass develop equally. The north-south directed fronts are strengthened either by the supply of the warm Daema Current (Tsushima Current in Japanese) of by the appearance of the cold North Korean Water along the coast. In the first type the thermocline inclines up toward the coast when the southward component of the wind is weakened. On the other hand, in the second typr the homogeneous and medium warm water spreads up to the coast and the latitude of 36 N, the second type front is formed.
Surficial sediments from the northern coastal area of Jeju Island, southeastern Yellow Sea (South Sea of Korea) were analyzed for grain-size texture, some geochemical characteristics and clay mineralogy in order to assess their provenance. Rare-earth element compositions and some geochemical discrimination diagrams, especially of Ti/Al, Nb/Al and Rb/Al ratios, were revealed to be useful indices for identifying the origin of sediments. These indices, together with clay mineral compositions, suggest that the coarse-grained sediments originate from the volcanic rocks of Jeju Island, whereas the fine-grained sediments are derived from Chinese rivers, especially the Changjiang River. The oceanic circulation pattern and the physical-chemical properties of seawater in the Yellow and East China seal support the possibility that the fine-pained Changjiang (Yangtze River) sediments can reach the coastal area of Jeju Island (southeastern Yellow Sea).
Since the key issue that 'the Yangsan fault is seismically an active fault" was raised in 1983, thegeological and geomorphological studies of active fault have been made by many researchers. These studies are mainly focused on the Yangsan fault system(YFS) and Ulsan fault system(UFS) due to many historical earthquakes occurred in this area. There are two different types of active faultings under the ENE-WSW horizontal stress field in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The NNE-trending YFS is the most prominent right-lateral strike-slip fault and has a continuous trace about 200 km long. Some part of this system has been active during the late Quaternary with evidences clearly recognized on both the northern (Yugyeri and Tosung-ri areas) and southern parts (Eonyang to Tongdosa area) of the YFS. in the southern part, the estimated vertical slip rate is about 0.02 - 0.07 mm/yr, and the lateral slip rate may be several times larger than the vertical rate. The most recent event occurred prior to deposition of Holocene alluvium, in the northern part, the fault trend locally changes to almost N-S, dips to the east and has reverse movement. The average vertical slip rate is estimated to be less than 0.1 mm/yr. The most recent event probably occurred after 1314 years BP (AD 536). The NNW-SSE (or N-S) trending UFS is a predominantly reverse fault that built up U-ie eastern mountain and has been active during U-ie late Quaternary. The fault trace is not straight but irregularly undulates along the foot of the mountain on the east. From the disturbed terraces along U-ie fault, the average vertical slip rate on U-iis system is estimated to be about 0.08.13mm/yr. The latest event is not well studied, but seems to have occurred after the last glacial maximum in the Malbang fault and 14,000 years BP in the Kalgok fault of the UFS. However, important issues such as fault segmentation, recurrence interval, age of Quaternary deposits need further studies.
This study examines the relationship among temperature, wind, and sea level pressure to understand recent warming in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula. To do this, the surface air temperature, NCEP/NCAR reanalysis wind data and sea level pressure data for the period of 40 years are analyzed. The 40-year surface air temperature data in the Antarctic Peninsula reveals relatively the larger warming trends for autumn and winter than other seasons. The variability of the surface air temperature in this region is compared with that of the regional atmospheric circulation. The surface air temperature is positively correlated with frequency of northwesterlies and negatively correlated with frequency of southeasterlies. This relation is more evident in the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula for autumn and winter. The trend analysis of wind frequency in the study area shows increasing and decreasing trends in the frequency of northwesterlies and southeasterlies, respectively, in the northwestern part of the Weddell Sea for autumn and winter. And also it is found that these winds are closely related with decreasing of sea level pressure in the southeastern region of the Antarctic Peninsula. Furthermore from the seasonal variation of sea level pressure in this area, it may be presumed that decreasing of sea level pressure in the southeastern region of the Antarctic Peninsula is related with warming in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula for autumn and winter. Therefore it can be explained that recent warming in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula is caused by positive feedback mechanism, that is, the process that warming in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula can lead to the decrease of sea level pressure in the southeastern region of the Antarctic Peninsula and these pressure decrease in turn lead to the variation of wind direction in northwestern part of Weddell Sea, again the variation of wind direction enhances the warming in the Antarctic Peninsula.
Paleomagnetic study on the sedimentary rocks in the Choongnam Coal Field has been carried out to determine the direction of declination and inclination of NRM and position of paleomagnetic pole, and to investigate the geotectonism and geomagnetic stratigraphy of the sedimentary rocks in the Daedong Group. As a result of paleomagnetic study, the study area can be divided tectonically into two blocks by Baegunsa fault, namely northwestern and southeastern blocks. Site mean declination and inclination of Baegunsa and Seoungjuri Formations in the northwestern block are $23.2^{\circ}$ and $54.9^{\circ}$, respectively. Those of Amisan, Jogyeri, Baegunsa and Seoungjuri Formations in the southeastern block show normal direction with declination and inclination of $-22.1^{\circ}$ and $11.2^{\circ}$, and reversed direction with those of $158.5^{\circ}$ and $-12.6^{\circ}$, respectively. Average paleomagnetic pole position in the northwestern block is located at $212.9^{\circ}E$ and $71.1^{\circ}N$, and that in the southeastern block at $345.7^{\circ}E$ and $53.3^{\circ}N$. This difference suggests relative rotation of about $45^{\circ}$ between two blocks. The paleolatitude of Daedong Group at the time of sedimentation is $5.6^{\circ}N$ much lower than present latitude of $37.7^{\circ}N$. Compared with worldwide Mesozoic paleomagnetic polarity stratigraphy, Amisan Formation is correlated with the lower boundary of Nuanetsi reversal zone in Graham interval, and Baegunsa and Seoungjuri Formations are correlated with just upper part of the upper boundary of Nuanetsi reversal zone, and their geologic ages are Late Triassic to Early Jurassic. The position of paleomagnetic pole acquired from Daedong Group in the study area is different from those in other places. This may be attributed to the different tectonic movement by Daebo Orogeny occurred after the deposition of Daedong Group.
Field observations for research of oceanographic characteristics in waters adjacent to fish farm on land and water quality at area where water is supplied to fish farm and area where water is discharged from fish farm are carried out in coastal waters of Pyoson located in the southeastern region of Jeju Island in March, May, August and November of 2000. Semidiurnal tides to the northeast and southwest dominate. The mean velocities of current around neap tides and spring tides are 8.52cmㆍs$^{-1}$, 28.63cmㆍs$^{-1}$, respectively. The difference of temperature between area where water is supplied to fish farm and area where water is discharged from fish farm is about 0.6$^{\circ}C$. Seasonal variation range for temperature and salinity is 13.5$^{\circ}C$ and 3.5psu, individually. Concentrations of nitrate(NO$_3$$^{-}$), phosphate(PO$_4$$^{3-}$ ), silicate(SiO$_2$) and COD(chemical oxygen demand) are high in autumn. Particularly, concentrations of nitrate and COD in winter and spring at station where water is supplied to fish farm are higher than these at station where water is dischared from fish farm. However, concentration of phosphate and silicate at station where is supplied to fish farm in spring, summer and autumn is higher than that at station where water is dischared from fish farm. Water quality in the study area is grade 1 and this level is kept up in the whole year.

Geophysical data sets from the Chojeong area in the Chungbuk-Do are compositely studied in terms of multi-attribute interpretation for the subsurface mapping of shallow fracture zones, associated with groundwater reservoir. Utilizing a GIS software, the attribute data are implemented to a database; a lineament from the satellite image, electrical resistivities and its standard deviation, radioactivity, seismic velocity, bedrock depth from exploration data. In an attempt to interpret 1-D electrical sounding data in 2-D and 3-D views, 2-D resistivities structures are firstly made by interpolating 1-D plots. Reconstruction of a resistivity volume is found to be an effective scheme for subsurface mapping of shallow fracture zones. Shallow fracture zones in the southeastern part of the study area are commonly correlated in the various exploration data.

South Korea is divided into five ecoprovinces and sixteen ecoregions. The criteria for ecoprovince classification are ecosystem connectivity and cultural homogeneity. Ecoregions are classified by cluster analysis. The variables used in the analysis are latitude, longitude, seasonal mean temperature, and seasonal precipitation. The large forest fires occurred in the specific ecoregions including Kangwon coastal ecoregion, WoolYoung coastal ecoregion, Hyungsan Taehwa coastal ecoregion, Upper Nagdong river basin ecoregion and Southeastern inland ecoregion. The largest forest fire in the korean history occurred in Kangwon coastal ecoregion in the year 2000. The fire devastated the forestland over 25,000ha. Korea Forest Service, Ministry of Environment, Province Kangwon and NGO organized an investigation committee for the restoration of the burnt area. The committee suggested restoration principles and also forged a restoration strategy of the Kangwon burnt area.
The altered volcanic rocks, ranging from tuffaceous to andesitic rocks are widely distributed around the "caldera" area in the southeastern part of Kyeongsang province. The volcanic activity and tectonic movement are assumed to be followed by the hydrothermal activities in the area. From the mineral assemblage the type of alteration can be divided into two types; propylitic and argillic. The average concentration of gold in hydrothermally altered rocks is somewhat lower (about 20 ppb) than that of fresh rocks (45-25 ppb), but for Ag, vice versa. During the hydrothermal process, the concentration of the trace elements Ag, Hg, Co, As, Hf, Sc, Si, Al increased, and that of Na, Rb, K, Au, Mg, Ca etc. decreased. The high anomalous contents of silver for altered rocks range from 4-7 ppm and 1-3 ppm for relatively fresh rocks.
Polychaete assemblages and their responses to habitat conditions were investigated in the southeastern continental shelf of Korea. The result of cluster analysis revealed that the study area could be divided into two regions, one including the shallow coastal region and the other the offshore region. The shallow coastal region sustained 4 polychaete assemblages: Nothria holobranchiata assemblage in the most northern part of fine sediments off Pohang, Magelona-Maldane assemblage off Gampo, Ophelina acuminata assemblage in the middle coastal area off Ulsan, Nothria conchylega assemblage in the south part off Pusan. These coastal polychaete assemblages contained less than 10 species per station and showed very low species diversity (H' = 1.22-1.52). The offshore also contained 4 assemblages: Terebellides-Aglaophamus assemblage in the northern and deep area of very fine sediments, Myriochele oculata and Spiophanes kroyeri assemblages in the central area of sandy bottoms, and Ninoe palmata assemblage in the southern offshore of sandy bottom. The offshore assemblages showed rather more species and higher diversity than coastal assemblages (H' = 1.90-2.26). The offshore region consisting of sandy sediment showed very low population densities. Some dominant species showed specific preference to sediment types and this phenomenon could be detected through their feeding modes. Depth or bottom temperature seems to be related to the distribution of most dominant worms. Thus the polychaete assemblages of the study area are found to be under the control of both a gradient of sedimentary properties and that of bottom temperature.
