  • The objectives of this study were to investigate physiological and psychological responses to the rustling sound of Korean traditional silk fabrics and to figure out objective measurements such as sound parameters and mechanical properties determining the human responses. Five different traditional silk fabrics were selected by cluster analysis and their sound characteristics were observed in terms of FFT spectra and some calculated sound parameters including level pressure of total sound (LPT), Zwicker's psychoacoustic parameters - loudness(Z), sharpness(Z), roughness(Z), and fluctuation strength(Z), and sound color factors such as ${\Delta}L\;and\;{\Delta}f$. As physiological signals, the ratio of low frequency to high frequency (LF/HF) from the power spectrum of heart rate variability, pulse volume (PV), heart rate (HR), and skin conductance level (SCL) evoked by the fabric sounds were measured from thirty participants. Also, seven aspects of psychological state including softness, loudness, sharpness, roughness, clearness, highness, and pleasantness were evaluated when each sound was presented. The traditional silk fabric sounds were likely to be felt as soft and pleasant rather than clear and high, which seemed to evoke less change of both LF/HF and SCL indicating a negative sensation than other fabrics previously reported. As fluctuation strength(Z) were higher and bending rigidity (B) values lower, the fabrics tended to be perceived as sounding softer, which resulted in increase of PV changes. The higher LPT was concerned with higher rating for subjective loudness so that HR was more increased. Also, compression linearity (LC) affected subjective pleasantness positively, which caused less changes of HR. Therefore, we concluded that such objective measurements as LPT, fluctuation strength(Z), bending rigidity (B), and compression linearity (LC) were significant factors affecting physiological and psychological responses to the sounds of Korean traditional silk fabrics.

  • During delivery, fetal death rate is about 1%. Since fetal death or infection have been continuously occurred, low cost fetal monitoring techniques are required. This study proposes an electronic stethoscope system for fetal phonogram by developing an amplifier to detect fetal movement and heart sound from abdomen of the pregnant woman. Using the electronic stethoscope, it is possible to listen or record the fetal sound and to analyze or store the digitized signal. Through the performance test using the developed system with 30 pregnant women in university hospital, it was found that the developed amplifier showed low noise, high performance. The system can detect heart sound and periods of heartbeats of a 22-week fetus.

  • A 15-year-old, neutered male, Shih-Tzu, was presented at the Chonnam National Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for evaluation of acute onset of persistent coughing, exercise intolerance, and abnormal heart sound. On thoracic auscultation, a split-second heart sound and a wheezing sound were detected on both sides of the chest walls. On physical examination, the dog's body condition score (BCS) was 7/9, and had stenotic nares. Thoracic radiographs revealed right-sided enlargement of the cardiac silhouette (vertebral heart score (VHS) 11.2; reference interval = 8.9-10.1), mild main pulmonary artery (MPA) bulging, mild interstitial infiltration, and hepatomegaly. The electrocardiogram showed right axis deviation, suggesting right ventricular hypertrophy. The echocardiographic study showed moderate pulmonary hypertension and moderate tricuspid regurgitation. There were no findings of a tracheobronchial disease, pulmonary thromboembolism, congenital shunt, left heart disease, or parasitic disease. Based on clinical signs and diagnostic findings, the dog was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension secondary to brachycephalic syndrome. To rectify respiratory exacerbating factors, the dog was recommended weight control by restricting dietary intake and managing concurrent Cushing's syndrome. Treatments included sildenafil, pimobendan, furosemide, and ramipril. After five months of taking medications and weight control, the severity of pulmonary hypertension improved from moderate to mild. The clinical signs of the patient, including coughing and exercise intolerance, improved a lot. For 5 months of follow-up, the patient has not reported further recurrence of respiratory distress.

  • In this paper, we proposed a portable electronic cardiogram and stethoscope (ECGS) that can simultaneously perform the electrocardiogram (ECG) and auscultation tests to increase the reliability of diagnosis of heart disease. To measure the ECG and heart sound (HS) at the same time, three ECG electrodes and a microphone sensor were combined into a triangular shape with a width of 90 mm and a height of 97 mm that can be held in one hand. In order to prevent skin problems when they contact the patient's skin, a capacitive coupled electrode was selected as the ECG electrode and a silicone material was used in a chest piece with the microphone sensor. For the signals measured from the electrodes and the chest piece, filters were respectively configured to pass only the signals of 0.01-100 Hz and 20-250 Hz, which are frequency bands for ECG and HS. The filtered ECG and HS analog signals were converted into digital signals and transmitted to a PC using wireless communication for monitoring them. The HS could be auscultated simultaneously using an earphone. The monitored ECG had an SNR of about 34 dB and a P-QRS-T waveform is clearly visible. In addition, the HS had an SNR of about 28 dB and both S1 and S2 are clearly visible. It is expected that it can aid doctors' inexperience in analyzing the ECG and HS.

  • The analysis of heart sounds is a noninvasive diagnostic method useful to diagnose heart valve function. In this paper we compared the ability of spectral analysis method for prosthetic heart valve sounds. Phonocardiograms of prosthetic heart valve were analyzed in order to derive frequency domain feature suitable for the classification of the valve state. The FFT-based methods did not provide sufficient frequency resolution to completely characterize the spectrum of prosthetic heart valve sounds. A high resolution parametric methods were shown to give superior frequency resolution. In parametric methods, all methods provide a 1st & 2nd & 3rd frequency component. But Shank method provided a most dominant frequency peak.

  • A method for presenting the heart rate of intact animals as a kymographic record is described. A transistorized impulse generator with a dry battery power supply is used to produce pulses. The pulses are integrated and make a pen motor drived. The ability of the instrument to follow a wide range of heart rate change is demonstrated. The instrument is especially usefull to observe an acute and transitory heart rate change. A method for changing the heart beat to sound and a method for counting the heart rate of intact animal and isolated preparations by employing post office counter were also described.

  • The heart disease taking the second place of the cause of the death of modern people is a terrible disease that makes sudden death without noticing. To judge the aortic valve disease of heart diseases a name of disease was diagnosed using psychological data provided from physioNet. Aortic valve is a valve of the area that blood is spilled from left ventricle to aorta. Aortic stenosis of heart troubles is a disease when the valve does not open appropriately in contracting the left ventricle to aorta due to narrowed aortic valve. In this paper, 3126 samples of cardiac sound data were used as an experiment data composed of 180 characteristics including normal people and aortic valve stenosis patients. To diagnose normal and aortic valve stenosis patients, NEWFM was utilized. By using an average method of weight as an feature selection method of NEWFM, the result shows 91.0871% accuracy.

  • Due to poor linguistic communication skills of sucklings and infants, crying mostly is only means of communication to express their body conditions and desires. We, therefore, developed an infant auscultation system which detects which part of the body has a pathological problem, by analysing infant's crying sound patterns. Specifically, in this paper, we accomplished an auscultation system for congenital heart diseases detection by performing pitch, intensity and spectrum analysis of the crying sounds between the normal infants group and the congenital heart diseases group. With this system, we can diagnose congenital heart diseases of infants with poor communication capacity, and, in the near future, can build a home care diagnosis system based on crying sound analysis technologies through additional experiments on medical data.

  • Spontaneous pneumomediastinum in the absence of predisposing risk factors has been rarely observed in full-term neonates. A 3-day-old neonate, delivered vaginally at term without any perinatal complications or signs of respiratory difficulty, was referred to the Seoul National University Children's Hospital because of reduced heart sound detected during routine neonatal examination. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed air collection in the anterior mediastinum. The baby developed respiratory distress on the fourth day and required supplemental oxygen. On the seventh day, there was no sign of respiratory difficulty, and x-ray examination showed no demonstrable pneumomediastinum. Hence, careful neonatal physical examination is essential during the postnatal assessment of newborns, and spontaneous pneumomediastinum should be considered when a healthy newborn presents with reduced heart sound.

  • In this paper, we proposed the single-channel adaptive noise canceller for the enhancement of heart sound (HS) in the auscultation signal. In case of either normal or emergency, a HS diagnosis is difficult due to the various signal source in the chest. Therefore, the HS enhancement is necessary. The conventional active noise canceller(ANC) has two channel, main signal and reference signal. For signal channel, the reference signal in ANC was generated by the proposed HS analyser and BS-Gate based on the characteristic of HS. This reference signal is suitable to the ANC condition. Experimental data were acquisited from MP36, SS30L in BIOPAC Inc., By the experiment, we confirmed that the proposed single-channel ANC was efficient for HS enhancement. And by the comparison with active linear enhancement, it was validate that the proposed ANC is not affected by the variation of a heartbeat.
