Pit and fissure sealant prevents biofilm accumulation, plays a role in forming a barrier to acidic substance made by the bacteria. The Surface reaction-type pre-reacted glass ionomerI(S-PRG) filler was developed in 1999. S-PRG filler releases fluoride continuously and does not decompose under wet conditions. The aim of this study was to test the microleakage and anticariogenic effect to adjacent enamel of S-PRG filler-containing pit and fissure sealant. Sound premolars and molars were used in this study. A S-PRG filler-containing pit and fissure sealant, Beautisealant$^{(R)}$(Shofu, Japan) was used for this experiment, the composite resin sealant Concise$^{(R)}$(3M ESPE, USA) was used as control. For the microleakage test, all teeth surface were double coated with finger nail varnish, with the exception of a 1.0 mm window around the restoration margins. The teeth were immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 24 hours and then rinsed in tap water. For the anticariogenic effect evaluation, all tooth were immersed in artificial carious solution for 9 days and rinsed with tap water. Each tooth was embedded in orthodontic acrylic rein and subsequently sectioned longitudinally in a bucco-lingual direction with a low-speed diamond saw. The cut sections were examined using a stereomicroscope. Differences in microleakage between the two groups were not different significantly. But the S-PRG filler-containing pit and fissure sealant showed higher anticariogenic effect than that of flowable resin sealant.

The effects of computer-assisted instruction (CAl) using molecular-level animation upon students' conceptions, attitudes toward science instruction, and learning motivation were investigated. Treatment and control groups (2 classes) were selected from a girls middle school in Seoul, and taught about the motion of molecule for 5 class hours. Before instruction, the short-version Group Assessment of Logical Thinking (GALT) and the Patterns of Adaptive Survey were administered, and the grade for the previous science course was obtained. The GALT score was used as a blocking variable, and the others as covariates. After the instructions, the researcher-made conceptions test, the test of attitudes toward science instruction, and the motivation questionnaire were administered. The perception questionnaire of CAl was also administered to the treatment group. Although more students in the CAl group had sound understanding about the motion of molecule, the scores of the conceptions test for the two groups were not significantly different at .05 level of significance. The students in the CAl group, however, were found to have more positive attitudes toward science instruction and learning motivation. In the perception questionnaire of CAl, most students in the treatment group exhibited positive attitudes toward the CAl. However, some students mentioned that they were disturbed by noisy environments, and that they could not understand some content presented. Educational implications are discussed.

In this study, generation characteristics and distribution situation of the animal fat residue were investigated to identify it's management problems and to propose alternatives for the recycling and final disposal. Generation sources were the meat distribution net-work including about 170 slaughterhouses, 280 meat-packing plants, thousands of meat shops and restaurants etc. The daily total amount of the animal fat residue is about 700 ton/day. More than 60% of the generation sources were concentrated in Seoul metropolitan area. The residue was collected by about 300 men using old-fashioned devices like handcarts, bike and auto bike, transported to the recycling plants by about 60 collection agencies. The residue was processed to produce by-products such as grease, tallow, animal feed ingredient in the recycling plants. At present, however, a great number of unlicensed, and mostly small rendering processors without having pollution control facilities do the unlawful business. These small, old fashioned and unorganized businesses are creating environmental problems by disposing the waste in improper ways such as open burning and dump. Improvement of the distribution network, the large-scale plants, and the estabilishing proper infrastructures were suggested to overcome the problems for the sound fat residues reprocessing industry.
To investigate the effect of resin cement, which had been known to increase the adhesive capacity of the cast gold inlay, on the gingival marginal fit and whether the tin-planting of the beveled area affects the marginal fit, Class II cast gold inlays were made on the 25 sound molars. Control group(ZPC goup) was cemented with the ZPC by conventional method. Experimental groups were cemented with the resin cement(Super-hond & $Panavia_{EX}$) and subdivided further by the existence or nonexistence of the tin-plating of the beveled area(ST & PT groups: with plating, SNT & PNT groups: without plating). So, each group was consisted of 5 teeth and the gingival margin of each specimen was mesiodistally sectioned by 3 times and the marginal and internal gap were evaluated by the Stereo Microscope (${\times}180$) and the Scanning Electron Micrascope(${\times}5,000$) was used for examining the adhesive relationship of the resin cement to the cavity wall and to the cast gold surface. The results were as follows : 1. Marginal gap was less than internal gap in all groups. 2. ZPC and SNT(bevel without tin-plating) groups showed the least gap and gap in PNT(bevel without tin-plating) group, ST(bevel with tin-plating) group, PT(bevel with tin-plating) group showed the greater value in order in evaluation of the both internal gap and marginal gap. 3. With the exception of the relationships between ZPC and SNT groups, ST and PNT groups, relationships between any other groups showed the statistical significance in the internal gap(p<0.05). 4. In the marginal gap, all relationships between groups showed the statistical significance (p<0.05) except the relationships between ZPC and SNT groups, ST and PNT groups, ZPC and PNT groups. 5. ZPC group showed more soluble phenamena than the resin groups(ST, SNT, PT, PNT). 6. Resin cement showed the void spaces in spite of good penetration into the micro-irregularities on both the tooth surface and the cast surface. The void was shown more in PT and PNT groups than in the ST and SNT groups. 7. After the treatment of heat and desiccation for SEM specimen, resin cements were detached more easily from the tooth surface than from the cast surface.
The different social reflections about the benefits and the potential risks of genetically modified (GM) crops have evolved with .different reactions in different countries. Many countries including Korea are working toward setting down new guidelines. Korea requires companies to label all food that contains more than 3% GM ingredients. One of the rapid and convenient detection methods of GM ingredients is amplification of the introduced DNAs by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Many PCR kits for this purpose are commercially available. The objective of this study was to evaluate performance of commercialized GM crop detection kits. The results showed that 6 out of 15 kits tested did not meet the requirements even purposed by the manufacturers themselves in terms of stability, reproducibility, and detection limits, suggesting a potential quality control problem in their design stage or production line. The evaluation also suggests that, although the duplex and triplex detection kits allowed unambiguous detection in a single PCR reaction, the monoplex detection kits were the most sensitive to the detection of GM ingredients. The detection limits also differ between soybean and corn. Results from this study will be useful in the development of sound qualitative tracking systems of GM ingredients for monitoring throughout the cultivation of GM crops, their trans-boundary movement, and food production using GM grains as well as for complying with government guidelines associated with GM crops.
Objective : Condyle hypoplasia in temporomandibular joint(TMJ) is often observed in several radiographic views. Mandibular Condyle hypoplasia is frequently confused with osteoarthritis with bony changes in TMJ. This paper investigated clinical characteristics of mandibular condyle hypoplasia as compared with TMJ osteoarthritis. Material and method : 276 patients with TMD were taken clinical and radiological examination and were divided into study group, 189 patients diagnosed with mandibular condyle hypoplasia, and control group, 87 patients diagnosed with TMJ osteoarthritis. And clinical features(Onset, Overjet, Overbite, Noise, Locking, NAS of noise, LOM, pain, MCO, and site of diagnosis and pain)of the two groups were compared. Results : 1. Mandibular condyle hypoplasia and TMJ osteoarthritis were similar in many of the clinical features. 2. Mandibular condyle hypoplasia concordance rates of the radiographic diagnosis site and the pain site was significantly lower than TMJ osteoarthritis. 3. Bilateral mandibular condyle hypoplasia group had more occlusal discomfort, and clenching habits than unilateral mandibular condyle hypoplasia group. 4. Unilateral mandibular condyle hypoplasia group had more unilateral chewing habits and LOM than unilateral TMJ osteoarthritis group. Unilateral TMJ osteoarthritis group had more morning stiffness and higher concordance rates of the radiographic diagnosis site and the click sound site than unilateral mandibular condyle hypoplasia group. 5. Bilateral mandibular condyle hypoplasia group had more usual headaches and overjet than bilateral TMJ osteoarthritis group. Conclusion : Mandibular condyle hypoplasia has somewhat distinguishing clinical characteristics as compared with TMJ osteoarthritis.

The purpose of this study was to compare the microleakage pattern of flowable composite resin to sealant, composite resin used in preventive resin restoration and glass ionomer cement used as liner. 120 extracted sound human molars were divided into 6 groups : group 1 and 2:sealant ; group 3 and 4:preventive resin restoration ; group 5 and 6:sandwich technique restoration. For the experimental groups(group 2, 4 and 6), flowable composite resin(Tetric flow) was used. For the control group, Concise was used as sealant material(group 1), Z-100 with Concise were used as preventive resin restoration(group 3), and Vitrebond was used as cavity liner(group 5). All the restorations were thermocycled and the degree of dye penetration was evaluated with stereomicroscope. The microleakage of each group was measured and statistically analyzed. The results of the present study were as follows : 1. In group 1 and 2, there was no statistically significant difference in microleakage between Concise and Tetric flow(p>0.05). 2. In groups of preventive resin restorations, there was no statistically significant difference in microleakage between Z-100 with Concise and Tetric flow(p>0.05). 3. The microleakage of Vitrebond and Tetric flow used as liner showed no statistically significant difference(p>0.05).

This study used sodium fluorescein to improve imaging diagnostic ability by increasing the fluorescence difference between sound enamel and caries lesions. It also made it easier to discriminate between stain and caries lesions using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF). Half of the specimen surface was covered with nail varnish as a control. Specimens were divided randomly in six decalcification groups and decalcified for different lengths of time. Then, ${\Delta}F$ was measured using QLF-D. After applying 0.075% sodium fluorescein, we measured ${\Delta}F$ again and compared it with the initial value. After cutting the central portion of the specimen, we measured the lesion depth using scanning electron microscopy. The lesion surfaces observed with QLF were darker than normal enamel, whereas they were lighter than normal enamel after applying fluorescein. Longer decalcification time was associated with greater fluorescent dye penetration. The ${\Delta}F$ measured after applying fluorescein was higher than the initial value (p < 0.05). Due to QLF measurement using fluorescein being more sensitive for diagnosing early decalcification, this approach will enable early diagnosis of dental caries before the cavity formation stage, allowing the treatment of early caries lesions. With QLF and sodium fluorescein, we can easily discriminate between stain and caries lesions.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of suggested etching method on the performance of pits and fissures sealant. In the first part, seventy extracted sound human permanent third molars and premolars were used. The teeth were randomly divided and performed in three different groups as follows : conventional etching, enameloplasty, and testing group. Non-pumicing, dye-guidance vigorous brushing-start etching technique was applied on the occlusal of testing group. Then the pit and fissure sealant was applied on all of the specimens. After the thermocycling and immersing in 1% methylene blue, the resin embedded sections were made. The microleakage data on the section were then recorded under the stereoscope and statistic analysis was done. Additional experiments were also performed : direct fissure surface etched pattern experiment, replica study, and micro-shear bond strength testing observation. The second part included two groups. A paired study was designed to evaluate the influence the environment has on the performance of the sealant. After etching, half of each occlusal surface received one of the two following treatments in succession: sealing in laboratory and intraoral condition (group 1), sealing in intraoral condition with and without a single-bonding agent (group 2). The results of present study can be summarized as follows: - The microleakage of testing group was significant different with conventional method (P<.05) and was not different with the enameloplasty group (P>.05). - The quality and quantity of etched enamel were improved. - Microshear bond strength of testing group was higher than control group (p<.05). - The environmental condition was influenced on the performance of the sealant. The testing etching method modified the capacity of the etching agent to penetrate into the pits and fissures, and simultaneous enhance their efficiency in vitro condition.

Deep caries may induce pulpitis and the pulpal tissue interacts with microbial invasion. The immune response to protect the pulpal tissue can be mediated by cellular signal molecules produced by the pulpal cells. The understanding of these processes is important to find future therapeutic method for the diseased pulp. The pulp tissue from sound teeth was set as control group (n=30) and the pulp tissue from decayed teeth was set as test group (n=30). Total RNA was extracted from the pulp of each group and it was used for cDNA microarray and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). The expression of TGF-${\beta}1$ was studied by immunohistochemistry. The results were as follows: 1. cDNA microarray analysis identified 520 genes with 6-fold or greater difference in expression level with 143 genes more abundant in health and 377 genes more abundant in disease. 2. The RT-PCR analysis was done for randomly selected 14 genes and the results supported the result of cDNA microarray assay. 3. TGF-${\beta}1$ was highly expressed in the carious pulp and it was found in odontoblast by immunohistochemistry. In conclusion, many cytokines were found to be significantly changed their expression in the diseased pulp(/M/>1.6).
