Sound Quality Evaluation for Laundry Noise by a Virtual Laundry Noise Considering the Effect of Various Noise Sources in a Drum Washing Machine (소음원의 영향이 고려된 가상 세탁음 제작을 통한 드럼 세탁기의 음질 인덱스 구축)

  • The objective of this study is to determine the effect for the sound quality according to the noise source and to build the sound quality index of the laundry noise. In order to compare laundry noise among the influence of noise sources, we made virtual laundry noises by synthesizing an actual laundry noise and each noise source such as a dropping noise, water noise, motor noise and circulation pump noise. We conducted a listening test by customers using virtual laundry noises. As a result of listening test, we found that the dropping noise has a decisive effect on the sound quality of the laundry noise. We conducted the multi regression analysis of sound quality for the laundry noise using the statistical data processing. It is verified to the reliability of the multi regression index by comparison with listening results and index results of other actual laundry noises. This study is expected to provide a guide line for improvement of the laundry noise.

  • The human voice is a convenient method of information transfer between different objects such as between men, men and machine, between machines. The development of information and communication technology, the voice has been able to transfer farther than before. The way to communicate, it is to convert the voice to another form, transmit it, and then reconvert it back to sound. In such a communication process, a vocoder is a method of converting and re-converting a voice and sound. The CELP (Code-Excited Linear Prediction) type vocoder, one of the voice codecs, is adapted as a standard codec since it provides high quality sound even though its transmission speed is relatively low. The EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate CODEC) and QCELP (Qualcomm Code-Excited Linear Prediction), variable bit rate vocoders, are used for mobile phones in 3G environment. For the real-time implementation of a vocoder, the reduction of sound quality is a typical problem. To improve the sound quality, that is important to know the size and shape of noise. In the existing sound quality improvement method, the voice activated is detected or used, or statistical methods are used by the large mount of data. However, there is a disadvantage in that no noise can be detected, when there is a continuous signal or when a change in noise is large.This paper focused on finding a better way to decrease the reduction of sound quality in lower bit transmission environments. Based on simulation results, this study proposed a preprocessor application that estimates the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) using the spectral SNR estimation method. The SNR estimation method adopted the IMBE (Improved Multi-Band Excitation) instead of using the SNR, which is a continuous speech signal. Finally, this application improves the quality of the vocoder by enhancing sound quality adaptively.

A Study on the Emotional Adjective Extraction and Subjective Evaluation of Sound Quality for Vehicle Power Seat (차량용 파워 시트 작동음의 감성 어휘 추출 및 주관적 음질 평가에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, emotional adjectives about the operating sound quality of the vehicle power seat are constructed, and the effectiveness of the emotional adjectives are verified by evaluating the operating sound quality. First, emotional adjectives were collected from the literature related to the automobile field and other sound qualities. A questionnaire was made using these adjectives. The questionnaire was designed to be able to select all adjectives that could express the operating noise of the power seat slide adjuster by applying the multiple- response method. Next, a subjective sound quality evaluation was conducted using the emotional adjectives. In the evaluation, we first recorded the operating noise for two power seats. Second, the subjective sound quality evaluation was performed on the recorded operating noise using a loudspeaker. Finally, through a statistical analysis on the sound quality evaluation results, the relationship between the semantic space and the preference score was verified, and the validity of the emotional adjectives was verified.

The Sound Quality Evaluation of High-speed Coastal Passenger Ships (고속 연안 여객선의 음질 평가)

  • Recently, it becomes to be very important to reduce the cabin noise of passenger ship, according to the trend of speedy and luxury ship. The noise reduction and control techniques should be considered as important factors from the viewpoint of the sound problem of cabin. Therefore, ship designer has to improve the sound quality as well as to redece the sound pressure level in cabins. In this paper, for the new approach of these problems, we tried to find the trends of noise and sound quality of high-speed coastal passenger ships. Loudness, roughness, fluctuation strength, and sharpness are selected as the parameters for the evaluation of sound quality. The parameters are calculated by using the sound measured in cabin while the ship is running. Furthermore we tried to find the trend of each parameter in cabins and compare with that of sound pressure level. As results, we find that the loudness is linearly proportional to sound pressure level. But, the other parameters show different trends which may be caused by ship motion on the wave and fluctuation of propelling power.

  • Booming sound is one of the most important interior sound of a passenger car. The conventional booming noise research was focused on the reduction of the A-weighted sound pressure level. However A-weighted sound pressure level can not give the whole story about the booming sound of a passenger car. In this paper, we employed sound metric which is the subjective parameter used in psycoacoustics. According to recent research results, the relation between sound metrics and subjective evaluation is very complex and has nonlinear characteristics. In order to estimate this nonlinear relationship, artificial neural network theory has been applied to derivation of sound quality index for booming sound of a passenger car.

  • Previously, we have analyzed Vehicle interior noise by dBA based analysis. However, dBA based analysis can not describe the various sound phenomenon that consumer hear. Sound quality matrics can describe various sound phenomenon that dBA based analysis could not explain. In this paper, we will demonstrate the difference of between dBA based analysis and real sound feeling, and analyze sound examples by sound metrics and Principle Component Analysis. In this way we can analyze vehicle interior noise more effectively.

  • Complaints against high-speed train interior noise have been increasing as a number of high-speed train passenger grows bigger. It is very difficult to analyze characteristics of high-speed train interior noise using sound pressure level only. It is requested to consider how the public response change for each high-speed train interior noise. This study presents evaluation of the sound quality for interior noise of KTX-II using Zwicker parameters. Characteristic of loudness and sharpness is different between noise samples depending on operation condition. The noise sample that recorded when the high-speed train passed through tunnel section is more louder and sharper.

  • In Korea, the high-speed train is one of the most important mass transportation. Due to its fast speed, the interior noise level is high and it is one of major reason for passenger complaints. In this study, the response of passengers to interior noise was evaluated using sound quality parameters. The effects of various parameters, such as train types, travel speed, rail road, on the calculated sound quality were investigated. The characteristics of interior noise were identified. The obtained results were compared to auditory experimental data. For precise comparison of noises of similar loudness but with different characteristics, paired comparison method was used. From the comparison, important parameters that have influence on the annoyance and loudness of the noise were determined.
