Early Matured Pear Cultivar 'Supergold' with High Quality and Greenish-white Skin for Overseas Trade (조생종 고품질 녹백색 배 '슈퍼골드')

  • Pear cultivar 'Supergold' (Pyrus pyrifolia var. culta Nakai) was originated from the cross between 'Chuwhangbae' and 'Manpungbae' with the aims of improving the fruit quality of 'Chuwhangbae' cultivar at Pear Research Station of National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in 1994. 'Supergold' was preliminarily selected in 2002 and named in 2008. The tree shows a vigorous growth habit and semi-spread characters like as 'Manpungbae'. Furthermore, it has sufficient flowers and carries abundant pollen grains, so it can also be used as a pollinator. 'Supergold' is highly resistant to black leaf spot (Alternaria kikuchiana) in the field condition. The optimum harvest time is around Sep. 11th, which is ahead of 'Whangkeumbae' about 5 days in the harvest period. The fruit shape is oblate and fruit skin color is greenish-white at harvesting time. The average weight of fruit is 570 g, and the soluble solids content is $13.6\;^{\circ}Brix$. The flesh is very soft and juicy, and renders good eating quality. Shelf life is about 6 months under the cold storage condition. To determine the self-incompatibility (SI) genotype of 'Supergold' pear cultivar, it was crossed with other cultivars of which SI genotypes have already known. The result of cross-pollinations of 'Supergold' with other cultivars showed relatively high rates of fruit set from 64.5% to 91.0%, except for the cross with pollens of 'Nijisseiki' that represented only 28.8% of fruiting rate. Although sometimes the stigma of 'Supergold' crossed with 'Hayatama', 'Chojuro', and 'Nijisseiki' showed malformed pollen tube tips, 'Supergold' is generally supposed to have cross-compatibility with all other pollen donor cultivars. It is considered that the S-allele of 'Supergold' is $S_3S_4$, which is based on the result of PCR-RFLP.

Effect of Media on the Growth of 'Pechika' Strawberry Grown in Hydroponics on Highland in Summer (사계성 페치카' 딸기의 고랭지 여름철 양액재배시 배지선택)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the optimal media for 'Pechika' ever-bearing strawberry grown in hydroponic culture system in summer highland. Three mixed media (1:1, v/v) of peatmoss with perlite, rice hull, and granular rockwool, and four solution strengths of EC 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and $1.25 dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ were tested. Root zone temperature in peatmoss+perlite media was 1 to $3^{\circ}C$ lower than in the other media. The culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was most effective in producing good yield and fruit quality. The culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was the highest about 1,632kg/10a to yield yearly average, but was very undulating 732 kg/10a to yield in 2004 year and 3,013kg/10a in 2003 year. The deformed fruits were increased when the solution strength was increased, especially in EC $1.25dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The soluble solids and the acidity content of fruits were increased with higher solution strength regardless of media. The uptake of Ca and Mg was inhibited at higher solution strength, and the uptake of N, P and K was promoted. Therefore, the culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was the most suitable culture medium to product strawberry in summer, because it had the highest yield even though fruit quality among treatments was not significant.

Improvement of Shelf-life and Quality in Fresh-Cut Tomato Slices:

  • Quality of fresh-cut tomato slices was compared during cold storage under various modified atmosphere packaging conditions. Chilling injury of slices in containers sealed with Film A was higher than with Film B; these films had oxygen transmission rates of 87.4 and 60.0 ml $h^{-1}\;m^{-2}\;atm^{-1}$ at $5^{\circ}C\;and\;99\%$ RH, respectively. While slices in containers with an initial atmospheric composition of air, $4\%\;CO_2+1\;or\;20\%\;O_2,\;8\%\;CO_2+1\;or\;20\%\;O_2,\;or\;12\%\;CO_2+20\%\;O_2$ showed fungal growth, slices in containers with $12\%\;CO_2+1\%\;O_2$ did not. Low ethylene in containers enhanced chilling injury. Modified atmosphere packaging provided good quality tomato slices with a shelf-life of 2 weeks or more at $5^{\circ}C$. Experiments were conducted to compare changes in quality of slices of red tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. 'Sunbeam') fruit from plants grown using black polyethylene or hairy vetch mulches under various foliar disease management systems including: no fungicide applications (NF), a disease forecasting model (Tom-Cast), and weekly fungicide applications (WF), during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ under a modified atmosphere. Slices were analyzed for firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), pH, electrolyte leakage, fungi, yeasts, and chilling injury. With both NF and Tom-Cast fungicide treatments, slices from tomato fruit grown with hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) mulch were firmer than those from tomato fruit grown with black polyethylene mulch after 12 days storage. Ethylene production of slices from fruit grown using hairy vetch mulch under Tom-Cast was about 1.5- and 5-fold higher than that of slices from WF and NF fungicide treatments after 12 days, respectively. The percentage of water-soaked areas (chilling injury) for slices from tomato fruit grown using black polyethylene mulch under NF was over 7-fold that of slices from tomato fruit grown using hairy vetch under Tom-Cast. When stored at $20^{\circ}C$, slices from light-red tomato fruit grown with black polyethylene or hairy vetch mulches both showed a rapid increase in electrolyte leakage beginning 6 hours after slicing. However, slices from tomato fruit grown using the hairy vetch mulch tended to have lower electrolyte leakage than those grown with black polyethylene mulch. These results suggest that tomato fruit from plants grown using hairy vetch mulch may be more suitable for fresh-cut slices than those grown using black polyethylene mulch. Also, use of the disease forecasting model Tom-Cast, which can result in lower fungicide application than is currently used commercially, resulted in high quality fruit for fresh-cut processing. Experiments were conducted to determine if ethylene influences chilling injury, as measured by percentage of slices exhibiting water-soaked areas in fresh-cut tomato slices of 'Mountain Pride' and 'Sunbeam' tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Ethylene concentration in containers without ventilation significantly increased during storage at $5^{\circ}C$, whereas little or no accumulation of ethylene occurred in containers with one or six perforations. Chilling injury was greatest for slices in containers with six perforations, compared to slices in containers with one perforation, and was over 13-fold greater than that of slices in control containers with no perforations. An experiment was also performed to investigate the effectiveness of including an ethylene absorbent pad in containers on subsequent ethylene accumulation and chilling injury. While ethylene in the no-pad controls increased continually during storage of both 'Mountain Pride' and 'Sunbeam' tomatoes at $5^{\circ}C$ under modified atmosphere conditions, no increase in accumulation of ethylene was observed in containers containing ethylene absorbent pads throughout storage. The ethylene absorbent pad treatment resulted in a significantly higher percentage of chilling injury compared with the no-pad control. In studies aimed at inhibiting ethylene production using AVG during storage of slices, the concentration of ethylene in control containers (no AVG) remained at elevated levels throughout storage, compared to containers with slices treated with AVG. Chilling injury in slices treated with AVG was 5-fold greater than that of controls. Further, we tested the effect of ethylene pretreatment of slices on subsequent slice shelf-life and quality. In slices treated with ethylene (0, 0.1, 1, or $10\;{mu}L\;L^{-1}$) immediately after slicing, ethylene production in non-treated controls was greater than that of all other ethylene pre-treatments. However, pretreatment of slices 3 days after slicing resulted in a different pattern of ethylene production during storage. Ihe rate of ethylene production by slices treated with 1 L $L^{-1}$ ethylene 3 days after slicing was greater during storage than any of the other ethylene treatments. With slices pre-treated with ethylene, both immediately and 3 days after slicing, the rate of ethylene production tended to show an negative correlation with chilling injury. Quality Characteristics of Takju Fermentation by Addition of Chestnut Peel Powder (율피가루를 첨가한 탁주의 품질 특성)

  • The characteristics of mash qualities of takju prepared by addition of chestnut peel powder(5%, 10%, 20% and 30% per steamed rice) were investigated during fermentation. That is, in all fermentation periods, changes of pit total acid, organic acids, solids, amino nitrogen, total sugar and reducing sugar, microorganisms, alcohol and color were determined and analyzed. There was significant differences in characteristics of mash qualities by addition of chestnut peel powder. In general, contents of total acid, organic acids, amino nitrogen, total sugar, reducing sugar and ethanol of takju added with chestnut peel powder were lower than those of steamed rice only, whereas solid contents was higher. But ethanol content of takju added with 5% of chestnut peel powder after 8 days of fermentation was 9.6% which was similar to that of takju prepared by addition of steamed lice only. Also, microbial populations such as total viable cells, yeast and lactic acid bacteria of the treatments were increased to about $10^8CFU/mL$ after 2 days of fermentation and then decreased gradually. In the beginning stage of fermentation color differences value of the treatments were $1.99{\sim}10.27$, and the differentials reduced gradually during fermentation.

Effect of Peatmoss-Based Organic Material Mixtures on Soil pH, Growth and Fruit Quality of Highbush Blueberry(Vaccinium corymbosum L.) Plants (하이부시 블루베리 정식 시 유기물 조성이 토양 pH, 생육 및 과실 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to test the suitability of various organic materials in order to reduce the use dependence of peatmoss as a soil pH regulator and to examine the effect of soil organic matter supply. A 2-year old northern-highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) 'Duke' plants were planted in the field at $2.0m{\times}2.5m$ spacing in spring. Before planting, organic materials were incorporated into the soil including the planting hole at 20 liter per plant, as the following mixtures: peatmoss only (20 L), peatmoss (10 L) + pine needle (10 L, PN), peatmoss (10 L) + rice hull (10 L, RH), and peatmoss (10 L) + sawdust (10 L, SD). The pH of organic materials was lowest in peatmoss (pH 4.3), followed by PN (pH 4.8), SD (pH 5.7) and RH (pH 7.8). Soil pH measured right after planting ranged from 5.3 to 5.9 and was lower in PM only and PM + PN than PM + RH and SD treatments. In the third year, the pH lowered to the range of 4.2 to 4.5, with PM and PM + PN still maintaining lower values. The early growth was good in the mixed treatment of PM and PN, and the plant height and width and the number of new shoots were good in the PM treatment. Soil water content was maintained highest in PM + PN, followed by PM, PM + SD and PM + RH. Vegetative growth was maintained better in PM and PM + PN, and the number of flower cluster and yield were also slightly higher in those treatments while mean fruit weight was similar among all treatments. Fruit quality indices such as total soluble solids, titratable acidity and firmness were not affected.

Effect of Salt Concentration in Soil on the Growth, Yield, Photosynthetic Rate, and Mineral Uptake of Tomato in Protected Cultivation (토양 염류농도가 시설토마토의 생육, 수량, 광합성속도 및 무기양분 흡수에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of high concentrations of salts in soil on the growth, yield, quality, photosynthetic rate, and mineral uptake of tomato ('House Momotaro') in pot cultivation. The growth of tomato such as plant height, top plant weight and root weight decreased as the concentrations of salts in soils increased. Yield decreased by 31% and 41% in EC 5.0 and $7.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively compared with the salt concentration of EC $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Yield reduction was caused by low mean weight and number of fruit if at high salt concentration in soil, and affected by low photosynthetic rate and water potential in leaf, The rate of blossom-end rot was highest (16.7%) in EC $7.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and increased as the concentrations of salts in soils increased. The contents of soluble solids and titratable acids showed a tendency to increase with increasing the concentrations of salts in soils. Photosynthetic rate, water potential and stomatal conductance in leaf decreased as the salt concentration in soil increased. The higher the salt concentration in soil, the lower the mineral uptake such as T-N, P, K, Ca and Mg but, the higher the content of Na.

Effect of EC Level of Irrigation Solution on Tomato Growth and Inorganic Ions of Root Zone in Soilless Culture of Tomato Plant Using Coir Substrate (코이어 배지 이용 토마토 장기 수경재배시 급액 EC가 근권부 무기이온과 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • In hydroponics, the nutrient solution is supplied considering the water and nutrient uptake characteristics of crops. However, as the ionic uptake characteristics are changed as a result of the weather conditions or the growth response of the crops, the root zone can not be maintained in optimal condition. In addition, the coir substrate has been used mainly for the tomato cultivation in place of the inorganic substrate, there are few studies on long-term cultivation using coir substrate. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of EC level of irrigation solution on tomato growth and inorganic ions of root zone in soilless culture using coir. Coir substrate mixed with 5 : 5 chip and dust was used. EC level of irrigation solution was 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and $3.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. At the initial stage, $NO_3-N$, P, Ca and Mg in the drainage were lower than the irrigation level at 1.0 and $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. However, EC $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ or higher, all the ions except P were highly concentrated in the drainage. The average fruit weight was not significantly different between 1.0 and $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ until 3th cluster, but from the next cluster, the higher the EC level, the smaller the weight. The number of fruit and yield to 6th cluster was the highest at $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. From the next cluster, The yield was decreased with the higher EC level. At the early stage of growth, BER occurred only in EC $3.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, but increased in all treatments with increasing irradiation. The incidence rate of EC $3.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ was higher than that of the lower EC level treatment.

Storage of Tomatoes by Polyethylene Film Packaging and $CO_2$ Treatment (Polyethylene Film 포장 및 $CO_2$ 처리에 의한 토마토 과실의 저장)

  • To investigate the effect of polyethylene film packaging and $CO_2$ treatment on tomatoes during storage, the gas composition in film, weight loss, the changes of color, hardness and several components were measured. The concentrations of $CO_2$ and $O_2$ in film were changed rapidly in early stage, but it kept a constant level after 7 days of storage. In 0.06 mm polyethylene film, $CO_2$ and $O_2$ concentration was kept a level of $4{\sim}6%$ respectively. The increase in $C_2H_2$ concentration was delayed in thick and $CO_2$ treated film. The rate of weight loss was 4% in non-packed tomatoes, but it recorded about 1% in 0.06 mm polyethylene film. Titratable acidity, pH and soluble solids were changed slightly, but the obvious differents were not observed according to film thickness and $CO_2$ treatment. The value of tomatoes was increased but L and b values were not changed greatly during storage. These color changes were restricted by 0.06 mm film and $CO_2$ treatment. The firmness and content of ascorbic acid were reduced during storage but it restrained by $CO_2$ treatment and film packaging. Sugar of tomatoes were composed of glucose, fructose and a very small amount of sucrose, and they were changed little during storage.

Effect of Preharvest and Postharvest 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) Treatments on Fruit Quality Attributes in Cold-stored 'Fuji' Apples (수확 전·후 1-MCP처리가 '후지' 사과의 저온저장 중 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This work was carried out to evaluate the effects of preharvest 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, $Harvista^{TM}$) and postharvest 1-MCP ($SmartFresh^{TM}$) treatments on the fruit quality attributes of cold-stored 'Fuji' ( Malus domestica Borkh.) apples. Fruits were exposed to 0, 95, 125, or $250 mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $Harvista^{TM}$ at 3, 2, 1 weeks before harvest (WBH), and treated with 0 or $1{\mu}{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $SmartFresh^{TM}$ at harvest. Fruit was then stored for up to 180 days at $0{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Fruit fresh weight, Hunter's value a, internal ethylene concentration (IEC), flesh firmness, titratable acidity (TA), and soluble solids content (SSC) in fruit treated with $Harvista^{TM}$ were not different from those of control fruit at harvest. During cold storage, flesh firmness and TA were higher in fruit treated with $250mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $Harvista^{TM}$ at 2 and 3 WBH than in control fruit. IEC was 5.5-10.0% lower in fruit treated with $250mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $Harvista^{TM}$ at 2 and 3 WBH compared with control fruit as storage duration progressed, while SSC was not affected. Furthermore, flesh firmness, TA, and IEC were affected neither by $Harvista^{TM}$ nor $Harvista^{TM}+SmartFresh^{TM}$ treatments, compared with those fruit quality attributes at harvest. The correlation maps indicated that IEC was negatively correlated with firmness and TA, regardless of $Harvista^{TM}$ application levels. In addition, positive correlations between fruit quality attributes were detected in treatments with $250mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $Harvista^{TM}+SmartFresh^{TM}$. Therefore, the results suggest that with a single application of $SmartFresh^{TM}$, a higher level of $Harvista^{TM}$ application would help in retention of fruit quality attributes during cold storage.

Shoot Growth and Fruit Characteristics According to Bearing Branch Direction and Thickness in 'Kawanakajima Hakuto' Peach Trees (복숭아 '천중도백도'의 결과지 방향 및 굵기에 따른 신초 생장과 과실 특성)

  • To investigate the optimal size of fruit bearing branches (FBBs) of 'Kawanakajima Hakuto' peach (Prunus persica Batsch) for production of high quality fruits, we evaluated shoot growth and fruit characteristics relative to FBB direction and thickness. FBB diameter, shoot length, fruit weight, and soluble solids content (SSC) averaged 6.9 mm, 32.6 cm, 333.6 g, and $11.2^{\circ}Brix$, respectively. Coefficients of variation of FBB diameter and shoot length were high as 35.8% and 75.3%. The highest frequency values revealed that 76.4% of FBBs had a diameter below 9.0 mm, 70.0% of shoot lengths were less than 40 cm, 24.8% of fruits were 310-340 g, and 66.9% of SSCs were $10.5-12.5^{\circ}Brix$. Shoot length and SSC were significantly affected by FBB diameter without direction, and fruit weight was significantly affected by interaction of FBB diameter and direction. There was a negative correlation ($r^2=0.094^*$) of FBB diameter and fruit weight with upward FBB directions, whereas FBB diameter and fruit weight were positively correlated ($r^2=0.246^{**}$) with downward FBB direction. With thick FBB diameter, shoot length, and SSC were significantly increased, but fruit weight was decreased. Therefore, downward FBBs below 9.0 mm in thickness are suitable for producing high-quality fruits of 'Kawanakajima Hakuto' peach.
