Pt Doping Mechanism of Vanadium Oxide Cathode Film Grown on ITO Glass for Thin Film Battery

  • An all solid-state thin film battery (TFB) was fabricated by growing, undoped and Pt-doped vanadium oxide cathode film ( $V_2$ $O_{5}$ ) on I $n_2$ $O_3$: Sn coated glass, respectively. Room temperature charge-discharge measurements based on Li/Lipon/ $V_2$ $O_{5}$ full-cell structure with a constant current clearly shows that the Pt-doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ cathode film is superior, in terms of cyclibility. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that the Pt doping process induces a more random amorphous structure than an undoped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film. In addition to its modified structure, the Pt-doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film has a smoother surface than the undoped sample. Compared to an undoped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film, the Pt doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ cathode film has a higher electron conductivity. We hypothesize that the addition of Pt alters electrochemical performance in a manner of making more random amorphous structure and gives an excess electron by replacing the $V^{+5}$. Possible mechanisms are discussed for the observed Pt doping effect on structural and electrochemical properties of vanadium oxide cathode films, which are grown on I $n_2$ $O_3$: Sn coated glass.

  • Diesel is an excellent candidate fuel for fuel cell applications due to its high hydrogen density and well-established infrastructure. But, it is hard to guarantee desirable performance of diesel reformer because diesel reforming has several problems such as sulfur poisoning of catalyst and carbon deposition. We have been focusing on diesel autothermal reforming(ATR) for substantial period. It is reported that ATR of diesel has several technical advantages such as relatively high efficiency and fuel conversion compared to steam reforming(SR) and partial oxidation(POX). In this paper, we investigate characteristics of diesel reforming under various ratios of reactants(oxygen to carbon ratio, steam to carbon ratio) for improvement of reforming performances(high reforming efficiency, high fuel conversion, low carbon deposition). We also exhibit calculated heat balance of autothermal reformer at each condition to help thermal management of SOFC system.

1kW 고체산화물 연료전지(SOFC) 시스템 설계 및 자열운전 (Design and Self-sustainable Operation of 1 kW SOFC System)

  • KEPRI (Korea Electric Power Research Institute) has studied planar type solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks using anode-supported cells and kW class co-generation systems for residential power generation. In this work, a 1 kW SOFC system consisted of a hot box part, a cold BOP (balance of plant) part, and a hot water reservoir. The hot box part contained a SOFC stack made up of 48 cells, a fuel reformer, a catalytic combustor, and heat exchangers. Thermal management and insulation system were especially designed for self-sustainable operation in that system. A cold BOP part was composed of blowers, pumps, a water trap, and system control units. When the 1 kW SOFC stack was tested using hydrogen at $750^{\circ}C$, the stack power was about $1.2\;kW_e$ at 30 A and $1.6\;kW_e$ at 50 A. Turning off an electric furnace, the SOFC system was operated using hydrogen and city gas without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about $1.3\;kW_e$ with hydrogen and $1.2\;kW_e$ with city gas respectively. The system also recuperated heat of about $1.1\;kW_{th}$ by making hot water.

  • There is a new power generation system such as direct coal fuel cell (DCFC) with a solid oxide electrolyte operated at relatively high temperature. In the system, it is of great importance to feed coal continuously into anodic electrode surface for its better contact, otherwise it would reduce electrochemical conversion of coal. For that purpose, it is required to improve the electrochemical conversion efficiency by using either rigorous mixing condition such as fluidized bed condition or just by recirculating coal particle itself successively into the reaction zone of the system. In this preliminary study, we followed the second approach to investigate how significantly particle recycle would affect the coal conversion efficiency. As a first phase, coal conversion was analyzed and evaluated from the thermochemical reaction of carbon with air under particle recirculating condition. The coal conversion efficiency was obtained from raw data measured by two different techniques. Effects of temperature and fuel properties on the coal conversion are specifically examined from the thermochemical reaction.

  • 고체산화물 연료전지는 다양한 응용분야에서 대체에너지로서 각광받고 있다. 본 논문은 평판형 anode 전극으로 들어가는 공기유량에 따른 SOFC의 I-V 그래프 특성에 대해 연구하였다. 본 연구를 위해, Butler-Volmer 반응속도 식이 상용 CFD코드인 FLUENT에 적용되었다. CFD로부터 얻어진 결과값은 문헌으로부터 참고한 실험데이터와 0.4 V ~ 1 V 범위에서 I-V 분극곡선이 잘 맞는 것을 보여줌으로써 그 유효성을 확인하였다. 연료전지의 수치적 계산은 각각 다른 유량조건 하에서 3D 구조를 이용하여 수행하였다. 결과는 수소, 산소 그리고 물의 농도 분포의 항목으로 제시하였다. 전산모사와 그 결과들은 Butler-Volmer 방정식을 사용자 정의 함수로 적용한 CFD기법이 공기 유량과 비표면적에 대한 조건을 확인하는데 사용될 수 있고, 작동조건 연구를 위한 지침이 됨으로써 연료전지 시스템의 성능을 향상시킬 수 있음을 보여준다.

  • The paper is to study on the simulation of the micro/macroscale thermo-electrochemical model of a single cell of anode-supported SOFC with direct internal reforming. The coupled heat and mass transport, electrochemical and reforming reactions, and fluid flow were simultaneously simulated based on mass, energy, charge conservation. The micro/macroscale model first calculates the detailed electrochemical and direct internal reforming processes in porous electrodes based on the comprehensive microscale model and then solve the macroscale processes such as heat and mass transport, and fluid flow in SOFCs with assumption of fully-developed flow in gas channel. The simulation results evaluate the overall performance by analyzing distributions of mole fraction, current density, temperature and microstructural design in co/counter flow configurations.

  • Microstructural and mechanical properties of Ni-YSZ fabricated using SPS processing have been investigated at various sintering temperatures. Our study shows samples to be applied as a SOFC anode have the proper porosity of 40% and high hardness when processed at $1100^{\circ}C$. These results are comparable to the values obtained at $100-200^{\circ}C$ higher sintering temperature reported by others. This result is important because when the fabrication processes are performed above $1100^{\circ}C$, the mechanical property starts to decrease drastically. This is caused by the fast grain coarsening at the higher temperature, which initiates a mismatch between thermal expansion coefficients of Ni and YSZ and induces cracks as well.

  • Fe based SOFC(Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) interconnector was fabricated by using the spark plasma sintering process and its microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated in this study. To fabricate the interconnector, the Fe-26Cr powder was mixed with the Ag (5, 10, 20wt.%) particles. In the Fe-26Cr-Ag sintered bodies, the Ag particles were almost dispersed at the grain boundary of the Fe-26Cr. The sintered bodies have the density of 87.2-97.5%, the density increases with increasing Ag content at sintering temperature of $850^{\circ}C$. Also, the compressive yield strength increases with increasing Ag content at the same sintering temperature.

박막 코팅을 이용한 SOFC 분리판 재료의 내산화성 향상 (Improvement of Oxidation-resisting Characteristic for SOFC Interconnect Material by Use of Thin Film Coating)

  • This study is focused on oxidation prevention of STS430, which is generally used as solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) interconnect at intermediate operating temperatures with oxidation-proof coatings. Inconel, $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSCo)$ and $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSCr)$ were chosen as coating materials. Using a radio frequency magnetron sputtering method, each target material was deposited as thin film on STS430 and was analyzed to find out favorable conditions. In this study, LSCr-coated STS430 can reduce electrical resistance to 1/3 level, compared with uncoated STS430. Also, long-term durability test at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1000 hours tells that LSCr thin layer performs an important role to prohibit serious degradations. Superior oxidation-resistant characteristic of LSCr-coated STS430 is attributed to the inhibition of spinel structure formation such as $MnCr_2O_4$.

  • Electrode of solid oxide fuel cell must have sufficient porosity to allow gas transport to the interface with electrolyte effectively but high porosity has a negative impact on structural stability in electrode support. Thus, the upper limit of porosity is based on consideration of mechanical strength of electrode. In this study, the effect of microstructure of Ni-YSZ anode supported SOFC on the mechanical and electrical property was investigated. LSCF composite cathode and 8YSZ electrolyte were used. The porosity of the anode was modified by the amount of graphite powder and added graphite contents were 24, 18, 12 vol%, respectively. The higher the porosity, the better the electrical performance, $P_{max}$. While the flexural strength decreased with increasing the amount of graphite. But the rate of increase in electrical performance and the rate of decrease in mechanical strength were not directly proportional to amount of graphite. The optimum graphite content incorporating both electrical and mechanical performance was 18 vol%.
