Photochemical patterning of self-assembled mono layers (SAMs) has been performed by diode pumped solid state (DPSS) 3rd harmonic Nd:$YVO_4$ laser with wavelength of 355 nm. SAMs patternings of parallel lines have subsequently been used either to generate compositional chemical patterns or fabricate microstructures by a wet etching. This paper describes a selective etching process with patterned SAMs of alkanetiolate molecules on the surface of gold. SAMs formed by the adsorption of alkanethiols onto gold substrate employs as very thin photoresists. In this paper, the influence of the interaction between the functional group of SAMs and the etching solution is studied with optimal laser irradiation conditions. The results show that hydrophobic functional groups of SAMs are more effective for selective chemical etching than the hydrophilic ones.

The lack of homogeneously sized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) hinders their many applications because properties of SWNTs, in particular electrical conduction, are highly dependent on the diameter and chirality. Therefore, the preferential growth of SWNTs with predetermined diameters is an ultimate objective for applications of SWNTs-based nanoelectronics. It has been previously emphasized that a catalyst size is the one crucial factor to determine the CNTs diameter in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, giving rise to several attempts to obtain size-controllable catalyst by diverse methods, such as solid supported catalyst, metal-containing molecular nanoclusters, and nanostructured catalytic layer. In this work, diameter-controlled CNTs were synthesized using a nanostructured catalytic layer consisting of Fe/Al2O3/Si substrate. The CNTs diameter was controlled by structural modification of Al2O3 supporting layer, because Al2O3 supporting layer can affect agglomeration phenomenon induced by heat-driven surface diffusion of Fe catalytic nanoparticles at growth temperature.
Graphene has generated significant interest in the recent years as a functional material for electronics, sensing, and energy applications due to its unique electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Much of the considerable interest in graphene stems from results obtained for samples mechanically exfoliated from graphite. Practical applications, however, require reliable and well-controlled methods for fabrication of large area graphene films. Recently high quality graphene layers were fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on nickel and copper with methane as the source of the carbon atoms. Here, we report a simple and efficient method to synthesize graphene layers using solid carbon source. Few-layer graphene films are grown using filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS) technique by evaporation of carbon atom on Ni catalytic metal and subsequent annealing of the samples at 800$^{\circ}$C. In our system, carbon atoms diffuse into the Ni metal layer at elevated temperatures followed by their segregation as graphene on the free surface during the cooling down step as the solubility of carbon in the metal decrease. For a given annealing condition and cooling rate, the number of graphene layers is easily controlled by changing the thickness of the initially evaporated amorphous carbon film. Based on the Raman analysis, the quality of graphene is comparable to other synthesis methods found in the literature, such as CVD and chemical methods.
Gibberellic acid (GA$_3$) is a commercially important plant growth hormone, which is gaining much more attention all over the world due to its effective use in agriculture and brewing industry. Industrially it is produced by submerged fermentation technique using Ascomycetous fungus Gibberella fujikuroi. Solid state and immobilized cell fermentation techniques had also been developed as an alternative to obtain higher yield of GA$_3$. This review summarizes the problems of GA$_3$ fermentation such as production of co-secondary metabolites along with GA$_3$, substrate inhibition and degradation of GA$_3$ to biologically inert compound gibberellenic acid, which limits the yield of GA$_3$ in the fermentation medium. These problems can be overcome by various bioprocessing strategies e.g. two - stage and fed batch cultivation processes. Further research on bioreactor operation strategies such as continuous and / or extractive fermentation with or without cell recycle / retention system need to be investigated for improvement in yield and productivity. Down stream processing for GA$_3$ isolation is also a challenge and procedures available for the same have been critically evaluated.
Due to high ionic conductivity and favorable oxygen electrocatalysis, doped $Bi_2O_3$ systems are promising candidates as solid oxide fuel cell cathode materials. Recently, several researchers reported reasonably low cathode polarization resistance by adding electronically conducting materials such as (La,Sr)$MnO_3$ (LSM) or Ag to doped $Bi_2O_3$ compositions. Despite extensive research efforts toward maximizing cathode performance, however, the inherent catalytic activity and electrochemical reaction pathways of these promising materials remain largely unknown. Here, we prepare a symmetrical structure with identically sized $Y_{0.5}Bi_{1.5}O_3$/LSM composite electrodes on both sides of a YSZ electrolyte substrate. AC impedance spectroscopy (ACIS) measurements of electrochemical cells with varied cathode compositions reveal the important role of bismuth oxide phase for oxygen electrocatalysis. These observations aid in directing future research into the reaction pathways and the site-specific electrocatalytic activity as well as giving improved guidance for optimizing SOFC cathode structures with doped $Bi_2O_3$ compositions.

Mycelium of Hericium erinaceum isolate KU-1 was cultured in liquid medium (HL medium) and solid medium (Ko medium) at pH 4.0 in $28^{\circ}C$. 1.0% glucose or fructose was the most favorable carbon source, and 0.2% amonium acetate or $NaNO_3$ was an exellent nitrogen source for mycelial growth as well as production of antimicrobial substances. The mixture of saw dust 70% with rice bran 30% (SR medium) was the substrate for formation of sporophores. The active substrates in extracts from mycelium, culture filtrate and fruiting body were separated by TLC. The solvent for TLC was EtOAc: Chloroform: MeOH (10 : 5 : 10). Phenol-like substances appeared at Rf $0.5{\sim}0.9$, and fatty acid-like substances appeared at Rf $0.1{\sim}0.2$. The purified materials from the extracts showed antimicrobial effects to Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans and Microsporum gypseum. The S. aureus was the most inhibited. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of purified white powder and the Hercenone derivatives against S. aureus were $5.65\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $1.85\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively.

We report the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on Invar-42 plates using coal tar pitch (CTP) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The solid phase CTP is used as an inexpensive carbon source since it produces a bunch of hydrocarbon gases such as $CH_4$ and other $C_xH_v$ by thermal decomposition over $450^{\circ}C$. The Invar-42 is a representative Ni-based ferrous alloy and can be used repetitively as a substrate for CNT growth because Ni and Fe are used as very active catalytic elements. We changed mixing ratio of carrier gases, argon and hydrogen, and temperature of growth region. It was found that the optimum gas ratio and temperature for high quality CNT growth are $Ar:H_2=400:400$ sccm and $1000^{\circ}C$, respectively. In addition, the carbon nanoball (CNB) was also obtained by just changing the mixing ratio to $Ar:H_2=100:600$ sccm. Finally, CTP can be employed as a versatile carbon source to produce various carbon-based nanomaterials, such as CNT and CNB.
This paper describes the fabrication of SiCN microstructures for super-high temperature MEMS using photopolymerization of pre-ceramic polymer. In this work. polysilazane liquide as a precursor was deposited on Si wafers by spin coating. microstructured and solidificated by UV lithography. and removed from the substrate. The resulting solid polymer microstructures were cross-linked under HIP process and pyrolyzed to form a ceramic of withstanding over $1400^{\circ}C$. Finally, the fabricated SiCN microstructures were annealed at $1400^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere. Mechanical characteristics of the SiCN microstructure with different fabrication process conditions were evaluated. The elastic modules. hardness and tensile strength of the SiC microstructure implemented under optimum process conditions are 94.5 GPa, 10.5 GPa and 11.7 N/min, respectively. Consequently, the SiCN microstructure proposed in this work is very suitable for super-high temperature MEMS application due to very simple fabrication process and the potential possiblity of sophisticated multlayer or 3D microstructures as well as its good mechanical properties.
The efficiency of acid, enzyme and microbial pretreatment of rice bran was compared based on the content of cellulose, hemicellulose, reducing sugars and xylose in the substrate. An isolate of Aspergillus niger or a strain of Trichoderma viride(MTCC 800) was employed for microbial pretreatment of rice bran in solid state. Acid pretreatment resulted in the highest amount of reducing sugars followed by enzyme and microbial pretreatment. A. niger showed a higher rate of hydrolysis than T. viride. The rice bran hydrolysate obtained from the different methods was subsequently fermented to ethanol either by Zymomonas mobilis(NCIM 806) or by Pichia stipitis(NCIM 3497). P. stipitis fermentation resulted in higher ethanol(37% higher) and biomass production($76{\sim}83%$ higher) than those of Z. mobilis. Maximum ethanol production resulted at 12h in Zymomonas fermentation, while in Pichia fermentation, it was observed at 60h. Microbial pretreatment of rice bran by A. niger followed by fermentation employing P. stipitis was more efficient but slower than the other microbial pretreatment and fermentation.
