  • Selective removal of NOx by binary oxide systems of Ba-Cu and Mn-Zr was investigated. These mixed oxides were effective in removing NOx at $400^{\circ}C$ by absorption in or on the solid as nitrate. The reaction was investigated by oxidation of NO which was promoted in the presence of $O_2$ on Mn or Cu sites. Then, the oxidized species were stored in the solid as nitrate ions on Ba or Zr sites.

  • The solid phase extractant (PVC-D2EHPA bead) was prepared by immobilizing di-2-ethylhexyl-phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The prepared PVC-D2EHPA beads were characterized by using fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The removal experiments of Cu(II) by PVC-D2EHPA beads conducted batchwise. The removal kinetics of Cu(II) was found to follow the pseudo-second-order model. The equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum removal capacity was 2.6 mg/g at $20^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH region was in the range of 3.5 to 6. and the standard free energy (${\Delta}G^{\circ}$) was between -4.67~-4.98 kJ/mol, indicating the spontaneous nature of Cu(II) removal by PVC-D2EHPA beads.

  • The surgical removal of solid deep-seated hemangioblastomas remains challenging, because treatment of these lesions is often complicated by severe bleeding associated with the rich vascularity of this tumor, and by severe neural tissue injury associated with the difficulty of en bloc resection, especially when the tumor is located at the cervicomedullary junction. Therefore, preoperative embolization of deep-seated solid hemangioblastomas may play an important role in successful surgical removal by reducing major bleeding and neural tissue damage. A 24-year-old woman, 28-weeks pregnant, was admitted to our hospital for the evaluation of quadriparesis, and brain magnetic resonance imaging[MRI] revealed intra-axial mass lesion in the cervicomedullary junction. After delivery, her neurologic symptoms became aggravated, and we decided to operate. Preoperative angiography revealed a hypervascular tumor in the posterior fossa, and embolization of the main feeding artery using gelfoam and microcoil, resulted in marked reduction of tumor vascularity. She underwent a midline suboccipital craniotomy involving the removal of the arch of C-1. The tumor was totally removed through a midline myelotomy, and at her 6-month follow-up she walked independently. We report on the combined use of the preoperative embolization of feeding vessels and subsequent operative resection in a patient with a solid hemangioblastoma at the cervicomedullary junction immediately after delivery.

  • Solid/Liquid(S/L) separation is crucial for biological treatment of animal wastewater. Liquid portion from S/L separation has less BOD-load and proper post-strip treatment can be obtained. Screen or declined sieve was normally used to separate the solid parts. For better separating efficiency a vibration and a cylindrical separator were constructed and tested. The results are summarized as follows; Solids removal efficiency and moisture content of separated solid were 15~26% and 85~88%, respectively for the vibration separator. for the cylindrical separator, solid removal efficiency and moisture content of solid were 16~39% and 86~89%, respectively. The greatest amount of drymatter was obtained when operating vibration separator with 10$^{\circ}$ inclination and 100% vibrating power. For the cylindrical separator maximum efficiency was obtained with 40 rpm and 19$^{\circ}$ inclination. The vibration and the cylindrical separator have shown 21% and 26% in BOD removal, respectively. These two types of separator were proved to be applicable methods for animal wastewater separation.

  • The high speed elimination process of suspended solid was investigated to treat the pulp waste water by using surface modified magnetite particle and magnetic power. The effects of the various aluminum salts such as Al(NO$_3$)$_3$ㆍ9$H_2O$, AlC1$_3$ㆍ6$H_2O$, $Al_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ㆍ13∼14 on the COD, BOD and suspended solid were systematically studied. It has been found that the 2.0 wt% of Al was most effective for the modification of Fe$_3$O$_4$ powder and then best for the treatment of pulp waste water, Optimum quantity of modified magnetite in this study was 12 wt%, and aging time was found to be 12 hours. Comparing with the conventional process, the required time for SS removal was drastically decreased. BOB and COD were also effectively removed when applied to the pulp wastewater.

  • The feasibility of foam separation to remove solid produced from fish culture water was investigated. Performance characteristics of foam separator were highly dependent upon the operating parameters which were superficial air velocity, Hydraulic retention time (HRT), and foam height. About $50\%$ of the total protein contained in a sample of fish culture water could be removed by foam separator. The removal efficiencies of protein, T-N, TA, and solid components were increased with increasing superficial air velocity and HRT. The combined effects of these operational variables show that removal rates of TVS increase with increasing superficial air velocity and HRT, and decrease as foam height goes up. It could be confirmed that foam separator might offer good perspective for removal of harmful components such as TA and TVS in aquacultural recirculating water.

  • The solid phase extractant SAN-D2EHPA/TBP containing two extractants of Di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and Tri-butyl-phosphate (TBP) was prepared by immobilizing two exractants D2EHPA and TBP in styrene acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN). The prepared SAN-D2EHPA/TBP was characterized by using fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The solid phase extractant SAN-D2EHPA/TBP was tested for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution. Experiments were carried out as a function of the pH and Cu(II) concentration in the aqueous phase. The equilibrium time was 180 min and equilibrium experiment data obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Langmuir isotherm model represented the experiment data as well. The maximum removal capacity of Cu(II) calculated from Langmuir isotherm model was 3.1 mg/g.

  • The effects of suspended solids size on culture water quality were determined in a commercial recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) for Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica. The particulate phase of the culture water was serially divided into six size fractions using 300, 200, 100, 75, 45, and 26 ${\mu}m$ pore size stainless sieves. The total, dissolved, and particulate nitrogen and phosphorus, and suspended solids for each fraction were determined. The concentration ranges in the fractions were: total nitrogen, 164-148 mg $L^{-1}$; total phosphorus, 20.4-15.5 mg $L^{-1}$; and total suspended solids, 8.1-6.1 mg $L^{-1}$. The concentration of total nitrogen and total phosphorus decreased significantly (P<0.05) with a 26 ${\mu}m$ and 200 ${\mu}m$ filter pore size, respectively. Nutrients from dissolved organic substances were much higher than from particulates. Analysis of particle size fractionation and its effects on water quality is useful to estimate removal efficiencies of a commercial effluent screening device for solid management and development of solid removal systems.

  • Solid and liquid phase peroxidases were extracted from Chinese cabbage roots by using commercial juicer in order to use peroxidases from agricultural waste for industrial applications. Since peroxidases are distributed into 66% in liquid (juice) and 34% in solid phase (pulp), enzymes from both phases were applied to investigate the enzymatic removal of phenol from waste water. After contacting 150 ppm Phenol solution with liquid phase enzyme (1,800 unit/$\ell$) for 3 hours in a batch stirred reactor, 96% of phenol could be removed through polymerization and precipitation. Also, phenol could be removed from initial 120ppm to 5ppm by applying solid phase enzyme in an air lift reactor ($600 unit/\ell$). Almost equivalent efficiencies of phenol removal were observed between two systems, even though only one third of the enzymes in batch stirred reactor was applied in airlift reactor. The possible reason for this phenomenon is because peroxidases exist as immobilized forms in solid phase.
