  • This paper describes a split operation for generation of core and cavity plates of an injection mold for a pseudo-solid model of a plastic part. Here, a pseudo-solid model means a sheet model that looks like a solid model. but whose boundary is not closed. When a solid model created in a different CAD system is imported through standard data exchange format, a pseudo-solid model is created in most cases as tolerance or some other problems make sewing operation failed. As most existing mold design system based on solid modeling kernels require a complete part solid model, mold designers have to do time-consuming healing operations to convert a pseudo-solid to solid. The essential capability of mold design system is the split operation for generation of core and cavity plates. Thus. we developed a split operation for pseudo-solid part model to eliminate or reduce healing preprocessing for mold design.

  • This paper describes the parting and Boolean operations for a pseudo-solid model of a plastic part, and their application to injection mold design. Here, a pseudo-solid model means a sheet model that looks like a solid model, but its boundary is not closed. When a solid model created in a different CAD system is imported through a standard data exchange file format, in most cases, a pseudo-solid model may be created due to tolerance or some other problems. However, most existing mold design systems based on solid modeling kernels require a complete part solid model. Therefore, mold designers have to do time-consuming healing operations to convert a pseudo-solid to solid. To eliminate or reduce the healing pre-process for mold design, in this paper, we proposed the parting and Boolean Operations on pseudo-solid part models. This paper also describes their detailed implementation and a case study.

  • As 3D solid modeling has been widely used in designing products, solid models of the products are directly used in various applications such as engineering analysis and process planing. However, the fully-detailed solid models may not be necessary in some application. For example, it is often more efficient to use simplified model of part of engineering analysis. Generation of mesh for the complex original model requires a quite amount of time, and the consequence of finite element analysis may not be desirable due to small and detailed geometry in the model. In this paper, a method to simplify solid models of machined part is presented. This method decomposes the delta volume of machined part, and uses the decomposed volumes to simplify the solid model. Since this method directly recognizes the features to be removed from the final model, it is independent of not only design features of specific CAD system, but also designer's design practice of design sequences.

  • This paper describes the Boolean and sectioning operations on pseudo-solid models. A pseudo-solid model is defined as a sheet body that looks like a solid model but cannot comprise a solid model due to tolerance. Most of CAD models imported from the other CAD system are pseudo-solid models and have to be repaired for further stolid modeling operations. However, healing a pseudo-solid model is a very tedious and cumbersome process. To solve this problem, we devised and implemented the Boolean and sectioning operations on pseudo-solid models. Using these operations, mold and die design can be performed more efficiently, as healing work is reduced greatly.

  • A dynamic stability analysis of a large interconnected power system takes much time even though the modern large computer is used because of the high order of the system dynamic equations. By the necessity of the low order power system models, a simplified power system model of the generator with the high speed solid state exciter is developed in this paper. The usefulness of the reduced model is confirmed by comparing its eigenvalues and the transient responses with those of the original model in the single machine to infinite bus power system.

  • The increased environmental concerns and the emphasis on recycling are gradually shifting the orientation of municipal solid waste (MSW) management. This paper is designed to evaluate regionalization programs for MSW management system. We developed a mixed intiger network programming (MIP) model to identify environment-friendly, cost-effective expansion plans for regionalization scenarios considered. The MIP model is a dynamic capacity expansion model based on the network flow model that depicts the MSW management cycle. In particular, our model is designed to determine the optimal form of regionalization using binary variables. We apply this model to assess the regionalization program of Seoul Metropolitan City, which includes three scenarios such as 1) districting, 2) regionalization with neighboring self-governing districts, and 3) g1obalization with all districts. We demonstrate how our model can be used to plan the MSW system. The results indicate that optimal regionalization with nearby self-governing districts can eliminate unnecessary landfills and expansions if jurisdictional obstacles are removed.

  • FE analyses for weldment of ship structure are required for various reasons such as stress concentration for bead tow, residual stress and distortion after welding, and hydrogen diffusion for prediction of low temperature crack. These analyses should be done by solid element modeling, but most of ship structures are modeled by shell element. If we are able to make solid element in the shell element FE modeling it is easily to solve the requirement for solid elements in weld analysis of large ship structures. As the nodes of solid element cannot take moments from nodes of shell element, these two kinds of element cannot be used in one model by conventional modeling. The PSCM (Perpendicular shell coupling method) can connect shell to solid. This method uses dummy perpendicular shell element for transferring moment from shell to solid. The target of this study is to develop a FE pre-processing system applicable at welding at ship structure by using PSCM. We also suggested glue-contact technique for controlling element numbers and element qualities and applied it between PSCM and solid element in automatic pre-processing system. The FE weldment modeling through developed pre-processing system will have rational stiffness of adjacent regions. Then FE results can be more reliable when turn-over of ship-block with semi-welded state or ECA (Engineering critical assessment) of weldment in a ship-block are analyzed.

  • Solid waste management (SWM) is one of the poorly rendered services in developing countries - limited resources, increasing population, rapid urbanization and application of outdated systems leads to inefficiency. Lack of proper planning and inadequate data regarding solid waste generation and collection compound the SWM problem. Decision makers need to formulate solutions that consider multiple goals and strategies. Given the large number of available options for SWM and the inter-relationships among these options, identifying SWM strategies that satisfy economic or environmental objectives is a complex task. The paper develops a mathematical model for a municipal Integrated SWM system, taking into account waste generation rates, composition, transportation modes, processing techniques, revenues from waste processing, simulating waste management as closely as possible. The constraints include those linking waste flows and mass balance, processing plants capacity, landfill capacity, transport vehicle capacity and number of trips. The linear programming model integrating different functional elements was solved by LINGO optimization software and various possible waste management options were considered during analysis. The model thus serves as decision support tool to evaluate various waste management alternatives and obtain the least-cost combination of technologies for handling, treatment and disposal of solid waste.

  • Integrating a 3D solid modeler with a general purpose FEM code, an automatic nonlinear analysis system of the 3D crack problems has been developed. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy knowledge processing. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. The complete finite element(FE) model generated, and a stress analysis is performed. In this system, burden to analysts fur introducing 3D cracks to the FE model as well as fur estimating their fracture mechanics parameters can be dramatically reduced. This paper describes the methodologies to realize such functions, and demonstrates the validity of the present system.
