A plasticity theory applicable to powdered metal compaction is briefly summarized and its variational form for the finite element analysis is described. The compaction processes of axisymmetric solid cylinder are simulated. For the analysis of the friction effect of solid cylinder, the investigations were performed for different compact geometries. Highlights of the results for given geometries are reported in terms of transmitted pressure on the lower punch from the upper punch through the compact and maximum density variation within the compacts. General conclusions from these simulation results are : (1) the friction coefficient could be selected from the transmitted force data during the single acting compaction test with the simulated results ; and (2) density variatioins within the compacts are very much dependent of the compact geometry such as the height to diameter ratio and the frictional condition between compact and dies.
This work aims to analyze the thermo-viscoelastic interaction in an orthotropic solid cylinder. The medium is considered to be variable thermal conductivity and subjected to temperature pulse. Analytical solution based on dual-phase-lags model with Voigt-type for behavior of viscoelastic material has been effectively proposed. All variables are deduced using method of Laplace transforms. Numerical results for different distribution fields, such as temperature, displacement and stress components are graphically presented. Results are discussed to illustrate the effect of variability thermal conductivity parameter as well as phase-lags and viscoelasticity on the field quantities. Results are obtained when the viscosity is ignored with and without considering variability of thermal conductivity. A comparison study is made and all results are investigated.
In this paper history of stresses, strains, radial and circumferential displacements of a functionally graded thick-walled hollow cylinder due to creep phenomenon is investigated. The cylinder is subjected to an arbitrary non-axisymmetric two dimensional thermo-mechanical loading and uniform magnetic field along axial direction. Using equilibrium, strain-displacements and stress-strain relations, the governing differential equations of the problem containing creep strains are derived in terms of radial and circumferential displacements. Since the displacements are varying with time due to creep phenomenon, an analytical solution is not available for these equations. Thus, a semi-analytical procedure based on separation of variables and Fourier series together with a numerical procedure is employed. The numerical results indicate that the non-axisymmetric loading and the material grading index have significant effect on stress redistributions. Moreover, by proper selection of material for any combination of non-axisymmetric loading, one can arrive suitable response for the cylinder to achieve optimal design. With some simplifications, the results are validated with the existing literature.
A pump which is a fundamental device in a hydraulic system affects on overall system performance to a great deal. Such problems as leakage and solid friction loss become important in field applications, especially for the case of operation under high pressure and at high speed. So the research on this kind of subjects is necessary to improve the performance of hydraulic devices. A high pressure radial piston pump is analyzed here, which has a stationary cylinder block. It pumps hydraulic fluid by letting camring push a piston in a cylinder. Fluid leaks between the piston and cylinder so that it deteriorates the pump efficiency. Furthermore, the piston happens to touch the cylinder wall to increase the friction loss and wear. In this research, by means of FDM, volumetric, mechanical and overall efficiencies are observed by varying several design Parameters and operation conditions. Design values or their trends are presented to improve these efficiencies.

In this study we investigated the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer within a coolant passage in the cylinder head assembly of an internal combustion engine by using a commercial CFD code, CFX The complex coolant passage of the cylinder head assembly was modelled by suitable choice of a grid system and careful attention was paid in the construction of meshes near the walls where significant cooling occurs. To treat the simultaneous heating and cooling of the combustion walls we invented a methodology allowing a heat source within the solid wall and the convective cooling at the interface between the solid and the fluid. We managed to reproduce the experimental results by adjusting parameters appropriately. We have found that high temperature was concentrated at the surface of the cylinder jacket. It turned out that the effect of oil cooling from the piston head was unexpectedly significant. On the other hand the effect of cooling from the ambient air is almost negligible. The CFD method proposed in this study is believed to be useful in the early stage of the design of the engine-cooling system.
The physical model of interest is based upon the concentric cylinder, where the outside cylinder is filled with optically thick and high temperature phase change material(PCM). The fluid is flowing through the inside cylinder to transfer the appropriate energy. The fluid is flowing through the inside cylinder to transfer the appropriate energy. The governing equations for the phase change material including internal thermal radiation and for the turbulent transfer fluid have been employed and numerically solved. The optically thick phase change justifies the P-l spherical harmonics approximation, which is believed to be appropriate choice particularly for the much coupled problem like in this study. The solid/liquid interface, temperature distribution within the PCM and the heat flux from the PCM to the transfer fluid have been obtained and compared with those of laminar transfer fluid. The numerical results show that the turbulent transfer fluid accelerates the solid/liquid interface and results in the increase of heat transfer rate from the PCM. The internal thermal radiation within the PCM, however, does not always playa role to increase the heat transfer rate throughout the inside cylinder. It is believed that the combined heat flux has been picked up more in the inflowing area than in the pure conductive phase change material.
The present investigation is concerned with a study effect of magnetic field and non-homogenous on the elastic stresses in rotating orthotropic infinite circular cylinder. A certain boundary conditions closed form stress fields solutions are obtained for rotating orthotropic cylinder under initial magnetic field with constant thickness for three cases: (1) Solid cylinder, (2) Cylinder with a circular hole at the center, (3) Cylinder mounted on a circular rigid shaft. Analytical expressions for the components of the displacement and stress fields in different cases are obtained. The effect of rotation and magnetic field and non-homogeneity on the displacement and stress fields are studied. Numerical results are illustrated graphically for each case. The effects of rotating and magnetic field and non-homogeneity are discussed.
An experiment on the expression and dewatering of chinese cabbage was conducted in order to investigate its dewatering behavior. Chopped cabbage was packed into cylinder and pressed by piston upto the predetermined pressure on Instron-1000. The rates of dewatering were affected domintantly by the applied pressure, but not significantly by the packed amount of cabbage in the cylinder. The pressure effect was increased very abruptly at first, but the increase rate was very low at high pressure greater than 20 MPa, showing great deviation from linear dependence of flow rate on pressure in Darcy's Law. Therefore, water expression from cabbage was not Newtonian flow of water through cell wall. In fact, the squeezed water contained a lot of solid particles, about 3% of solid cabbage particles, showing destruction of cell wall. It appeared that compression and dewatering of vegetable wastes in the low pressure. under 20 MPa, is more desirable for later treatment of the dewater. More researches are needed in order to develop a treatment method for the solid particles in the expressed water before an expeller treatment system can be applied to vegetable wastes.
