Experimental external collector type solar lumber dryer of $1m^3$ of maximum capacity with $1.6m^3$ of collector area was designed and constructed. The seasonal performance of solar dryer, including air-conditions, energy efficiency, and drying characteristics of 3cm-thick red pine and douglas-fir lumber was investigated. Also, the economic analysis was carried out. Annual average solar drying rate was about 2 times faster than air-drying rate with no significant difference in the amount of drying defects. But in initial drying stage air-drying rate in winter was much faster and those in spring and autumn were slightly slower than solar drying rate in each season. Annual average energy efficiency of solar-dryer and-collector was 25% and 57%, respectively. Fuel savings were over 50% at 15% of energy inflation rate and the payback period was estimated as 6.10 years at 30% of energy inflation rate.
The solar energy retention rate of a flat plate collector can be increased by increasing water flow rate through the collector which also increases the pumping energy incurred in obtaining that solar energy. The problem of optimal flow rate is formulated to fit within the framework of pontryagin's maximum principle and with a few simplifying assumptions, an optimal solution that can be easily implemented is obtaincd, The optimal solution is used in the simulation of a solar heating system using actual climatological data and the results are compared with that of on-off control. The result that not only the object function but, In some cases, also the solar energy retention rate the collector is increased. In is also found that the optimal control gets more advantageous as the solar insolation level gets lower, and also as tile cost of auxiliary heating fuel gets higher.
At the moment, in Korea, over 90% of energy resources depend on imports, and nearly 60% of electric energy is produced using fossil fuel. Therefore, the government adopted the Climatic Change Convention and has implemented the RPS system since 2012 to actively cope with the dependence on imported energy, and to grow and expand the new renewable energy industry. This study examined the performance results of mandatory supply of solar photovoltaic energy and non-solar photovoltaic energy assigned to providers and the present state after implementation of the RPS system. As a result, the achievement rate in 2012 was 64.7%. Especially, solar photovoltaic energy showed a high achievement rate of 95.7%, whereas non-solar photovoltaic energy showed a low achievement rate of 63.3% due to several problems and was highly dependent on the government. In 2013, the burden of each provider has increased due to more mandatory supply and addition of unfulfilled supply of 2012, and the separate mandatory supply of solar photovoltaic energy established for protection of the solar photovoltaic market is restricting investment. Therefore, there is a need to assign mandatory supply in consideration of the available amount of each new renewable energy.
Solar pumps, for water lift systems, is becoming popular in rural areas for supplying drinking water in dry seasons when its need is elevated. The development in technology has also made solar pumps readily available and cheap which has increased its demands. So, for scattered settlements having a limited budget for operation and maintenance costs, solar pump is preferred over grid connected electrical pumping systems. This primary objective of the study was to design a solar photovoltaic pumping drinking water supply system for a small health post which is about 45 km east from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. The study also compared and verified the final design with the system's existing design prepared by a development agency. The water source for this study was a confined aquifer 115m below the surface. The water demand was calculated to be 11m3 per day. A 1500 kPa submersible pump attached to a motor was selected and installed. Along with that twelve solar panels, reservoir, transmission main and distribution main was designed. The outcomes conclude solar photovoltaic pumping water supply systems to be cost-effective with an estimated cost of only USD 0.84 million per MLD. Solar pumps require low maintenance and operation costs and its repairs can quickly be done by the local people. The study also shows that solar technology produces no sound, needs no fuel making it environmentally friendly.

In this paper, a hybrid photovoltaic fuel-cell generation system employing an electrolyzer for hydrogen generation and battery for storage purpose is designed and simulated. The system is applicable for remote areas or isolated DC loads. Control strategy has been considered to achieve permanent power supply to the load via the photovoltaic/battery or the fuel cell based on the power available from the sun. MATLAB and SIMULINK have been used for the simulation work. A sensitivity analysis is conducted for various load level based on availability of solar radiation.
Water balance has a significant impact on the overall fuel cell performance. Maintenance of proper water management should provide an adequate membrane hydration and avoidance of water flooding in the catalyst layer and gas diffusion layer. Considering the important of advanced water management in PEM fuel cell, this study proposes a simple one dimensional water transportation model of PEM fuel cell for use in a dynamic condition. The model has been created by assumption that the output is the water liquid saturation difference. The liquid saturation change is the total difference between the additional water and the removal water on the system. The water addition is obtained from fuel cell reaction and the electro osmotic drag. The water removal is obtained from capillary transport and evaporation process. The result shows that the capillary water transport of low temperature fuel cell is high because the evaporation rate is low.
It has been recognized that solar water heating systems are economically inferior to conventional gas water-heaters and boilers using light oil as fuel in spite of having practical possibilities among other alternative energy facilities in Korea. The solar system, however, should be revaluated due to the sharp rise of oil prices recently. We have calculated the energy amount and cost through a series of research projects for the system by experiment and simulation, which lead to analyzing reliable life cycle costs. For the economic analysis, the gas water-heater and light oil boiler were taken as base cases while the solar systems implemented with these facilities were compared as alternatives. As a result, the solar system using the light oil as an auxiliary fuel surpassed the light oil boiler in economics. And a $50\%$ government subsidy for the initial cost is needed to maintain competitiveness with the gas hot-water heater. With this support, the simple payback period of the system can approach 12.8 years under $20\%$ additional curtailment of expenditure.
A clean and highly efficient energy production has long been sought to solve energy and environmental problems. A fuel cell energy is expected to be a key to solve the problems. The emissions of fuel cell is low, the by-product is low, the by-product is pure water. This paper shows the I-R and V-R characteristics of fuel cell which are connected in parallel and series. In addition, the voltage of the fuel cells which are connected in parallel is less than the voltage of the fuel cells which are connected in series.
Renewable energy industries, including sola cell plants, has been ever increasing ones for reducing fossil fuel consumption and strengthening national energy policy. In this paper we tried to identify occupational health hazards in solar cell-related industries operated in Korea. Poly silicon, silicon ingot and wafer, solar cell and module are major processes for producing solar cells. Poly silicon operations may cause hazards to workers from metal silicon, silanes, silicon, hydro fluoric acid and nitric acid. Solar cells could not be constructed without using metals such as aluminum and silver, acids such as hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid, bases such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, and solvent and phosphorus chloride oxide. Workers in module assembly process may exposed to isopropanol, flux, solders that contain lead, tin and/or copper. To prevent occupational exposure to these hazards, it is essential to identify the hazards in each process and educate workers in industries with proper engineering and administrative control measures.
