Arc Detection Method of Photovoltaic System using Frequency Analysis (주파수 분석을 이용한 태양광 설비의 아크 검출 기법)

  • There is a little research on DC arc detection when compared to a large number of literature and patents on AC arc detection. However, as DC energy sources such as photovoltaic power generation facilities and fuel cells are introduced, research on DC arc has become as important as AC arc detection in terms of circuit protection and system reliability enhancement. In this paper, we have developed an arc detection method for photovoltaic system using frequency analysis. Through various experiments, it was confirmed that the proposed method effectively detects the arc.

  • This paper proposes a new configuration of 36-pulse voltage source converter which consists of two 6-pulse bridges and a pulse-interleaving auxiliary circuit. The system topology of proposed converter was derived to increase the pulse number of converter output voltage without increasing the number of 6-pulse bridges. The gate pulse generation was analyzed using the theoretical approach of multi-pulse switching converter, The operational feasibility of proposed system was verified by computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software and experimental works with 2kVA hardware prototype. The proposed converter can be widely used for the uninterruptible power supply, the power quality compensator, and the distributed power generation, such as solar and fuel cell power system.

  • Environmental issue is one of the key factors to industry area using fossil fuels, because it accelerates the global warming. So it is supposed to reduce greenhouse gases around the developed nations of the world at times go. This issue is especially for the power industry. Under this background, MicroGrid system that consists of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) system, such as natural power system (wind, solar) and fuel-cell, co-generation, also known as CHP (Combined heat and power), has been developed greatly during the last 10 years. This paper adopts optimal model using GAMS to develop methods for conducting an integrated assessment of MicroGrid system.

  • Negative environmental consequences of fossil fuels and the concerns about their soaring prices have spurred the search for alternative energy sources. While other alternative energies-like solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, and tidal-offer viable options for electricity generation, around 40% of total energy consumption requires liquid fuels like gasoline or diesel fuel. This is where bio-energy/biofuels is especially attractive, where they can serve as a practical alternative to oil. The production of liquid biofuels for transportation will depend upon a stable supply of large amount of inexpensive cellulosic biomass obtained on a sustainable basis. This paper reviewed development status of transportation bio-energy for vehicles, technical barriers to the production of cellulosic ethanol, and the global future of bio-diesel and ethanol production.

  • Rapid depletion of fossil based oil, coal and gas reserves and its greater demand day by day necessitates the search for other alternatives. Severe environmental impacts caused by the fossil fire based power plants and the escalating fuel costs are the major challenges faced by the electricity supply industry. Integration of Distributed Generators (DG) especially, wind and solar systems to the grid has been steadily increasing due to the concern of clean environment. This paper focuses on a new simple and fast load flow algorithm named Backward Forward Sweep Algorithm (BFSA) for finding the voltage profile and power losses with the integration of various sizes of DG at different locations. Genetic Algorithm (GA) based BFSA is adopted in finding the optimal location and sizing of DG to attain an improved voltage profile and considerable reduced power loss. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient in finding the optimal location and sizing of DG in 15-bus radial distribution system (RDS).The authenticity of the placement of optimized DG is assured with other DG placement techniques.

  • Actual states of energy utilizations were investigated and analyzed on three representative rural villages in Chungcheongnam-Do. Rural residents were almost using the ondol boiler as a heating facility and oil(diesel, kerosene) and electricity(night thermal-storage power service) as a heating energy. There were a few households using briquette or firewood in a fuel hole with Korean hypocaust. Most of their cooking facilities were gas ranges using LPG. The most popular hot-water supply system was an oil boiler and the next was an electricity boiler. The amount of energy use in a rural household generally showed 20,000 to 40,000 won/month of the electric power rate, 400 to 800 liter/year of the oil and 60 to 120 kg/year of the LPG. Prompt measures should be taken to promote the spread of new and renewable energy such as solar heat, biomass and wind power, etc.

  • This paper discusses wheel offloading approaches of COMS which has a single side solar array system for the accommodation of the optical payloads. First of all, in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and reflect practical implementation point of view, thruster sets for wheel offloading are proposed based on numerical analyses taking into account the COMS configuration. In this analysis, it is assumed that the wheel offloading is conducted twice a day. Secondly, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed thruster sets, orbit simulations have been conducted for several wheel offloading approaches and compared.

  • The enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas is definitely a challenge we cannot avoid. Korea ranks 10th in the world and 1st among OECD countries in terms of the volume of greenhouse gas emission and is expected to join Annex I countries which have to reduce emission after 2012. For the sustainable development, we shouldn't depend upon fossil fuel energy longer. This study will provide preliminary data to developing renewable energy systems for urban generation. There are investigated a recent case study of CONCERTO projects co-funded by the European Commission and analyzed application of renewable energy systems as a urban energy source.

  • The characteristics and classification of UAV power plants were studied. The energy source for electric generation and power source for internal combustion engine for UAVs were compared. The advantage and drawbacks of power plants were analyzed respectively and the performance demand condition was suggested for next generation UAV power plant finally.
