The coupled soil-pile-structure seismic response is recently in the spotlight of researchers because of its extensive applications in the different fields of engineering such as bridges, offshore platforms, wind turbines, and buildings. In this paper, a simple analytical model is developed to evaluate the dynamic performance of seismically isolated bridges considering triple interactions of soil, piles, and bridges simultaneously. Novel expressions are proposed to present the dynamic behavior of pile groups in inhomogeneous soils with various shear modulus along with depth. Both cohesive and cohesionless soil deposits can be simulated by this analytical model with a generalized function of varied shear modulus along the soil depth belonging to an inhomogeneous stratum. The methodology is discussed in detail and validated by rigorous dynamic solution of 3D continuum modeling, and time history analysis of centrifuge tests. The proposed analytical model accuracy is guaranteed by the acceptable agreement between the experimental/numerical and analytical results. A comparison of the proposed linear model results with nonlinear centrifuge tests showed that during moderate (frequent) earthquakes the relative differences in responses of the superstructure and the pile cap can be ignored. However, during strong excitations, the response calculated in the linear time history analysis is always lower than the real conditions with the nonlinear behavior of the soil-pile-bridge system. The current simple and efficient method provides the accuracy and the least computational costs in comparison to the full three-dimensional analyses.

In this study, in order to evaluate adequacy of considering local site effect, excluding soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects in inelastic dynamic analysis and design of mid-rise moment resisting building frames, three structural models including 5, 10, and 15 storey buildings are simulated in conjunction with two soil types with the shear wave velocities less than 600 m/s, representing soil classes $D_e$ and $E_e$ according to the classification of AS1170.4-2007 (Earthquake actions in Australia) having 30 m bedrock depth. Structural sections of the selected frames were designed according to AS3600:2009 (Australian Standard for Concrete Structures) after undertaking inelastic dynamic analysis under the influence of four different earthquake ground motions. Then the above mentioned frames were analysed under three different boundary conditions: (i) fixed base under direct influence of earthquake records; (ii) fixed base considering local site effect modifying the earthquake record only; and (iii) flexible-base (considering full soil-structure interaction). The results of the analyses in terms of base shears and structural drifts for the above mentioned boundary conditions are compared and discussed. It is concluded that the conventional inelastic design procedure by only including the local site effect excluding SSI cannot adequately guarantee the structural safety for mid-rise moment resisting buildings higher than 5 storeys resting on soft soil deposits.
When dynamic loads such as mechanical load, wind load, and seismic load, which causing a vibration, acts on the body of the 3-D framework resting on soil foundation, it is required to consider the dynamic behavior of soil-space framework interation system. Thus, this study presents the 3-dimensional soil-interaction system analyzed by finite element method using 4-node plate elements with flexibility, 2-node beam elements, and 8-node brick elements for the purpose of idealizing an actual structure into a geometric shape. The objective of this study is the formulation of the equation for a dynamic motion and the development of the finite element program which can analyze the dynamic behavior of soil-space framework interaction system.
The academic research works about liquid storage tanks are reviewed for the purpose of providing valuable reference to the engineering practice on their aseismic design. A summary of the performance of tanks during past earthquakes is described in this paper. Next, the seismic response of tanks under unidirectional earthquake is reported, supplemented with the dynamic response under multidirectional motions. Then, researches on the influence of soil-structure interaction are brought out to help modify the seismic design approach of tanks in different areas with variable properties of soils. Afterwards, base isolation systems are reported to demonstrate their effectiveness for the earthquake-resistant design of liquid storage tanks. Further, researches about the liquid-structure interaction are reviewed with description of simplified models and numerical analytical methods, some of which consider the elastic effect of tank walls. Moreover, the liquid sloshing phenomenon on the hydrodynamic behaviors of tanks is presented by various algorithms including grid-based and meshfree method. And then the impact of baffles in changing the dynamic characteristics of the liquid-structure system is raised, which shows the energy dissipation by the vortex motion of liquid. In addition, uplifting effect is given to enhance the understanding on the capacity of unanchored tanks and some assessment of their development. At last, the concluding remarks and the aspects of extended research in the field of liquid storage tanks under seismic loads are provided, emphasizing the thermal stress analysis, the replaceable system for base isolation, the liquid-solid interaction and dynamic responses with stochastic excitations.

The dynamic behavior of a structure by earthquake is considerably affected by the flexibility of the base soil. This phenomenon is called dynamic soil-structure interaction effect. There are two broad categories of soil-structure interaction analytical technique: direct method and substructure method. Substructure method, in contrast to direct method, has many limitations in applying to embedded structures or structures on layered soil sites, while it is relatively simple. In this paper, a simplified soil-structure interaction analytical procedure using substructure method is proposed to eliminate its original limitations. The proposed method is well applicable to embedded structures or structures on layered soil sites with as good results as FLUSH.
If the seabed is exposed to high waves for a long period, the pore water pressure may be excessive, making the seabed subject to liquefaction. As the water pressure change due to wave action is transmitted to the pore water pressure of the seabed, a phase difference will occur because of the fluid resistance from water permeability. Thus, the effective stress of the seabed will be decreased. If a composite breakwater or other structure with large wave reflection is installed over the seabed, a partial standing wave field is formed, and thus larger wave loading is directly transmitted to the seabed, which considerably influences its stability. To analyze the 3-D dynamic response characteristics of the seabed around a composite breakwater, this study performed a numerical simulation by applying LES-WASS-3D to directly analyze the wave-structure-soil interaction. First, the waveform around the composite breakwater and the pore water pressure in the seabed and rubble mound were compared and verified using the results of existing experiments. In addition, the characteristics of the wave field were analyzed around the composite breakwater, where there was an opening under different incident wave conditions. To analyze the effect of the changed wave field on the 3-D dynamic response of the seabed, the correlation between the wave height distribution and pore water pressure distribution of the seabed was investigated. Finally, the numerical results for the perpendicular phase difference of the pore water pressure were aggregated to understand the characteristics of the 3-D dynamic response of the seabed around the composite breakwater in relation to the water-structure-soil interaction.

In this study, characteristics of seismic behaviors of offshore wind turbine systems using concrete-suction-type supporting structures are investigated. Applying hydrodynamic pressure from the surrounding sea water and interaction forces from the underlying soil to the structural system which is composed of RNA, the tower, and the supporting structure, a governing equation of the system is derived and its earthquake responses are obtained. It can be observed from the analysis results that the responses are significantly influenced by soil-structure interaction because dynamic responses for higher natural vibration modes are increased due to the flexibility of soil. Therefore, the soil-structure interaction must be taken into consideration for accurate assessment of dynamic behaviors of offshore wind turbine systems using concrete-suction-type supporting structures.
A seismic evaluation is made of the response to horizontal ground shaking of cantilever retaining walls using the finite element model in three dimensional space whose verification is provided analytically through the modal analysis technique in case of the assumptions of fixed base, complete bonding behavior at the wall-soil interface, and elastic behavior of soil. Thanks to the versatility of the finite element model, the retained medium is then idealized as a uniform, elastoplastic stratum of constant thickness and semi-infinite extent in the horizontal direction considering debonding behavior at the interface in order to perform comprehensive soil-structure interaction (SSI) analyses. The parameters varied include the flexibility of the wall, the properties of the soil medium, and the characteristics of the ground motion. Two different finite element models corresponding with flexible and rigid wall configurations are studied for six different soil types under the effects of two different ground motions. The response quantities examined incorporate the lateral displacements of the wall relative to the moving base and the stresses in the wall in all directions. The results show that the wall flexibility and soil properties have a major effect on seismic behavior of cantilever retaining walls and should be considered in design criteria of cantilever walls. Furthermore, the results of the numerical investigations are expected to be useful for the better understanding and the optimization of seismic design of this particular type of retaining structure.
This study investigated the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the response of base-isolated buildings. Seismic isolation can significantly reduce the induced seismic loads on a relatively stiff building by introducing flexibility at its base and avoiding resonance with the predominant frequencies of common earthquakes. To provide a better understanding of the movement behavior of multi-story structures during earthquakes, this study analyzed the dynamic behavior of multi-story structures with high damping rubber bearing (HDRB) behavior base isolation systems that were built on soft soil. Various models were developed, both with and without consideration of SSI. Both the superstructure and soil were modeled linearly, but HDRB was modeled non-linearly. The behavior of the specified models under dynamic loads was analyzed using SAP2000 computer software. Erzincan, Marmara and Duzce Earthquakes were chosen as the ground motions. Following the analysis, the displacements, base shear forces, top story accelerations, base level accelerations, periods and maximum internal forces were compared in isolated and fixed-base structures with and without SSI. The results indicate that soil-structure interaction is an important factor (in terms of earthquakes) to consider in the selection of an appropriate isolator for base-isolated structures on soft soils.

This study mainly aims to assess the performance of soil-structure systems designed by direct displacement-based method coupled with strong column-weak beam design concept through various system identification techniques under strong ground motions. To this end, various system identification methods are employed to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of a structure (i.e., modal frequency, system damping, mode shapes, and plastic hinge formation pattern) under a strong seismic excitation considering soil-structure interaction for different site conditions as specified by ASCE 7-10. The scope of the study narrowed down to the code-complying low- to high-rise steel moment resisting frames with various heights (4, 8, 12, 16-story). The comparison of the result of soil-structure systems with fix-based support condition indicates that the modal frequencies of these systems are highly influenced by the structure heights, specifically for the softer soils. This trend is more significant for higher modes of the system which can considerably dominate the response of structures in which the higher modes have more contribution in dynamic response. Amongst all studied modes of the vibration, the damping ratio estimated for the first mode is relatively the closet to the initial assumed damping ratios. Moreover, it was found that fewer plastic hinges are developed in the structure of soil-structure systems with a softer soil which contradicts the general expectation of higher damageability of such structural systems.
