Laboratory experiments were peformed to understand physical properties of soil-cement column under the influence of acidic flow including metal contaminants and its retaining capacity against metal migration. The contaminant used in this study was nitric acid with Cu and Cd. The Permeability of soil-cement column decreased when pH of the column began to drop below 12. Decreases in pH led to significant reduction of compressive strength of clayey soil-cement specimen, while relatively marginal reduction for sandy soil-cement specimen. The metal contaminants did not leachate from soil-cement column until pH of soil-cement dropped below 7∼8 for Cu and 9∼10 for Cd. Metal contaminants were precipitated and trapped inside the soil-cement column at pHs higher than those mentioned as verified with metal analysis and visual inspection. This indicated that soil-cement column not only performs well as a cut-off wall, but also helps alleviating the level of contamination of the surrounding environment.

Soil-cement column is often used as a contaminant barrier. This study presents the results of experimental study performed to investigate the changes of properties of soil-cement column under the attack of acids. Sulfuric nitric, and ascetic acid were used as contaminants. Specimen were made of clayey and sandy soils with addition of cement and water Permeability of soil-cement decreased with time during permeability test. When significant amount of acid percolated the specimen, permeability increased and compressive strength decreased due to the dissolution and leaching of cement and its chemical reaction compounds. Sulfuric and nitric acid were more effective than ascetic acid in deteriorating soil-cement column. Amount of acid required to lower the pH of soil cement below 12 was calculated from the results of permeability tests. This leads to a conclusion that, under the conditions employed in this study, the chemical stability of soil-cement column could be maintained against acid attack for longer than generally accepted lifetime of contaminant barriers.

This paper discusses the reduction and subsequent recovery and increase of shear strength of clay in the vicinity of soil-cement column. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to investigate the effects on surrounding clay during and after soil-cement column installation in soft Ariake clay. Discussions were made on the mechanism of strength changes of clay by considering the thixotropic recovery, reconsolidation effect, penetration of cement slurry and diffusion of exchangeable cations. On the basis of field and laboratory observations, 10 days after column installation, the decreased shear strength of surrounding clay during mixing was recovered and 30 days later, shear strength of surrounding clay increased 30% by average. Therefore, it is recommended that the increase of shear strength of clay can be taken into consideration in the bearing capacity and stability analysis of the composite ground.

Deep soil mixing with cement and cement-lime mixtures has been widely used for decades to improve the strength of soils. In this study, small-scale laboratory model tests of polymer columns in soft clayey soil were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using various polymeric compounds as binders in deep soil mixing. Floating and end bearing polymer columns were used to examine the load-settlement relationship of improved soft clayey soils for various area replacement ratios. The results indicate that polymer columns show good promise for use in deep mixing applications.

Immobilization of contaminants in contaminated soils by solidification processes is an attractive potential remediation process. In this study, the treatability of lead, copper, toluene, and COD was investigated by leaching test. Industrial sand was adopted as the test material and was contaminated with lead copper, and toluene to 100mg/kg, 500mg/kg, 200mg/kg respectively. P solidifying agent was used as the binder(20% by weight of contaminated soil) in the solidification treatment. The leachability of contaminants leached from the solidified soil was evaluated using column test. The percentage of contaminants leached from the solidified soil was significantly reduced by reaction of waste species with cement components and encapsulation reaction of binder. Based on the tests, it is ascertained solidification process can be a very effective method to control the elution of contaminants from the contaminated soil.
The authors selected the modified soil method, and then performed the geotechnical and environmental laboratory test, and evaluated whether the modified soil liner could be accepted as a barrier layer in landfill. Unlike the results of the natural soil(CL), those of the hydraulic conductivity test of stabilized soil met the standard value. According to these results, the optimal mixing ratio of a mixture(cement : bentonite : stabilizing agent) was 90 : 60 : 1 with mass ratio(kg) for 1㎥ with soil, and it was possible to use poor quality bentonite. B\circled2 because of a little difference from results with high quality bentonite. B\circled1. The Cation Exchange Capacity(CEC) of the modified soil was increased about 1.5 times compared with the natural soil; however. the change of CEC with a sort of additives was not detected. In order to observe the change of the chemical components and crystal structures, the natural and the modified soils with the sorts of additives were measured by the XRF(X-Ray Flourescence Spectrometer) and SEM, but there was no significant change. The artificial leachate with the heavy meals ($Pb^{2+}$ , $Cu^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$ Zn$^{2+}$ 100mg/L) was passed through the natural soil and modified soils in columns. In the natural soil, Cd$^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were identified, simultaneously the pH of outflow was lower, and then came to the breakthrough point. The removal efficiency of the natural soil was showed in order of following : $Pb^{2+}$ ≒$Cu^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ On the other hand, modified soils were not showed the breakthrough condition like the result of the natural soil. The modified soil with the lower quality bentonite, B\circled2(column3) was more stable with respect to chemical attack than that with the higher bentonite, B\circled1(column2) because the change range of outflow pH in columns was less than that of outflow pH in column2. In addition, the case of adding the stabilizing agent(column4) was markedly showed the phenomena.ena.

Thick soft clay deposits which are generally located at the west and south coast of the Korean peninsula have complicated characteristics according to their orientation and formation history. Thus, several geotechnical problems could possibly occur when those soft clay deposits are used as foundations for marine structures. Deep cement mixing (DCM) method is one of the most widely used soft soil improvement method for various marine structures, nowadays. DCM method injects binders such as cement into the soft ground directly and mixes with the in-situ soil to improve the strength and other geotechnical properties sufficiently. However, the natural impacts induced by dynamic motions such as ocean waves, wind, typhoon, and tusnami give significant influences on the stability of marine structures and their underlaying foundations. Thus, the dynamic properties become important design criteria to insure the seismic stability of marine structures. In this study, the dynamic behavior of cemented Busan clay is evaluated. Laboratory unconfined compression test and resonant column test are performed on natural in-situ soil and cement mixed specimens to confirm the strength and strain-dependent dynamic behavior variation induced by cement mixing treatment. Results show that the unconfined compressive strength and shear modulus increase with curing time and cement content increment. Finally, the optimized cement mixing ratio for sufficient dynamic stability is obtained through this study. The results of this study are expected to be widely used to improve the reliability of seismic design for marine structures.
As port development in soft ground is actively promoted for international logistics and transportation, the Deep Mixing Method (DMM) is continuously applied to form an improved column body directly in the ground by mixing cement with soil to secure the stability of the structure. However, in the case of cement, there is a problem of emitting a lot of greenhouse gases during the production process, so the development and use of new alternative materials are socially required to achieve the national goal of carbon neutrality. Accordingly, in this study, CMD-SOIL, developed to induce a hardening reaction similar to cement by recycling recycled resources, was used as a ground improvement material for the DMM. In addition, it was attempted to determine the possibility of replacing cement by conducting on-site test construction and evaluating applicability. As a result of the study, the compressive strength of CMD-SOIL compared to the design reference strength was 1.46 to 2.64 times higher in the field mixing test and 1.2 to 5.03 times higher than in the confirmed boring. In addition, the ratio (λ) of the compressive strength in the field to the design reference strength was 0.63 to 1.14, which was similar to the previous research results. Therefore, in the case of CMD-SOIL, it is possible to express the compressive strength necessary to secure stability, and there is no difference in applicability compared to existing materials such as ordinary portland cement and blast furnace slag cement, so it was analyzed that it could be used as a ground improvement material for the DMM.
Recently, problems related to vibrations of decomposed granite soils have acquired increasing attention in Korea because those soils cover approximately one third of the country. Both resonant column and cyclic triaxial test were performed to investigate deformation characteristics of unsaturated and cement-mixed decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. The important soil parameters in this respect are the shear moduli, dynamic moduli of elasticity and damping ratios. The dynamic parameters are influenced by variables such as strain amplitude, ratio of loading cycles, and degree of saturations, etc. Test results and data have shown that the optimum degree of saturation to the maximum shear modulus due to a capillary menisci effect was about 17~18 % at low strain amplitude and 10~15 % at intermediate strain amplitude. This paper suggests the range of threshold strain and mean shear modulus of decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. It also proposed the empirical relationship between the dynamic parameters for cement-mixed and non-mixed decomposed granite soils.
