흙-벤토나이트 혼합물의 지반공학적 특성 (Geotechnical Properties of Soil-Bentonite Mixtures)

  • Iln order to figure out criteria of bentonite for using as impervious material of waste landfill, laboratory experiments were performed to reveal the geotechnical properties of soil-bentonite mixtures such as compaction test, direct shear test, unconfined compression test, triaxial compression test, consolidation test and permeability test. The results of the study are summarized as follows ; 1. Based on the compaction test, optimum moisture content increased with the increase of bentonite content, but maximum dry density decreased. 2. In unconfined compression test, the maximum strength of the soil-bentonite mixtures appeared at 10% bentonite content. The correlation equation between stress($\sigma$) and strain($\varepsilon$) of the soil-bentonite mixtures is given by ; $\sigma=\frac{a\cdot\varepsilon}{\varepsilon^n+b}$ 3. In shear test of the mixtures. the shear strength showed an increasing trend with increase of bentonite content and the maximum shear strength appeared at 10% bentonite content. 4. In consolidation test, the coefficient of compressibility $(a_v)$$(m_v)$$(C_v)$

  • Leachate generated from landfill material flows through soil gravitationally downward and. continues to flow until it encounters groundwater, posing the thread of pollution. So selection of liner material having a low permeability and testing method are required. The study was performed to find bentonite content of soil-bentonite mixtures for using as liner and cover of waste landfills. This paper includes results of consolidation tests and permeability tests and evaluates suitability and properties of soil-bentonite mixtures as impervious materials.

  • 본 연구에서는 폐기물 매립장의 차수층으로 사용되는 벤토나이트 혼합토에 대한 연직침윤시험과 Frequency Domain Reflectometry 측정 장비를 이용한 유전율 측정시험을 수행하였다. 표준사, 화강풍화토, 벤토나이트 재료에 대해 다양한 배합 비율을 적용하여 제작된 벤토나이 트 혼합토의 체적함수비, 간극비, 유전율상수 등의 관계로부터 이들의 불포화 투수 특성을 파악하였다. 연구결과에 따르면 초기 벤토나이트 혼합비는 체적함수비 변화에 영향을 미치며, 체적함수비 변화는 간극비와 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있다. 또한 벤토나이트 혼합토의 체 적 함수비 변화는 유전율 반응으로부터 명확히 측정됨을 파악하였다. 벤토나이트 혼합토의 불포화 투수 특성을 파악하기 위한 본 연구에서 체적함수비와 유전율상수의 관계함수를 추정하였다.

토목섬유 및 메타카올린 첨가 시멘트-벤토나이트 혼합토의 강도 특성 (The Strength Properties of Cement-Bentonite Soil Mixtures with Geosynthetics and Metakaolin)

  • In the present study, an investigation has been made on the application of cement-bentonite soil mixtures as the countermeasure against leachate produced by buried animal carcasses. For this purpose, the strength characteristics of the cement-bentonite soil mixtures mixed with geotextile and metakaolin. After the mixtures with different contents of the cement (0 %, 10 %), bentonite (0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, 20 %), and weathered soil (100 %, 95 %, 90 %, 85 %, 80 %) were prepared, metakaolin and geotextile were added with different contents (metakaolin : 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, 20 % of the cement weight; geotextile : 0 %, 0.5 %, 1 %, 1.5 %, 2 %). Experimental results suggested that the early strength of the mixture increases due to the pore filling, the hydration acceleration, and the pozzolan reaction when metakaolin of 5~10 % of the cement weight was added. In addition, the compressive strength increase when 0.5~1 % geotextile contents were added, and the above these contents, the rate of strength increase was gradually decreased because of the fibrous tangles.

  • Recently the centrifuge test has been used increasingly to clarify a problem of seepage in dam. However, one of the most difficult challenges in the testing is to conform permeability properties of model ground to the prototype. In order to resolve the problem, a few solutions, such as an increase of pore water viscosity and a regulation of water permeability, are suggested. Although the use of prototype materials is principles if a model test is carried out, the materials of similarity gradation is used in the centrifuge model test because of the nature of the model test for dam. Therefore, we choose the latter method for model ground materials. In this study, the permeability properties of soil-bentonite mixtures are studied through the permeation test using triaxial compaction test apparatus.

  • Soil-bentonite mixtures are frequently used as impervious for waste disposal sites. In the present work, bentonite composite liner systems(BCL) have been developed by utilizing Korean zeolitic bentonites. The geomechanical properties of the liner systems, such as strength, hydraulic conductivity, etc. have been studied. The laboratory and field test results are also be presented.

  • 본 연구에서는 흙-벤토나이트월과 같은 차단벽체에 대한 전기전도도 모니터링 기법의 적용성을 평가하였다. 벤토나이트 함량, 투수계수 및 중금속 농도에 따른 전기전도도 변화를 파악하기 위하여 투수실험과 주상실험을 실시하였다. 흙-벤토나이트 혼합 다짐시편의 전기전도도는 벤토나이트 함량이 증가함에 따라 선형적으로 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 또한 흙-벤토나이트 차단벽체의 투수계수는 벤토나이트 함량과 반비례하는 경향을 나타내었으며, 전기전도도와도 반비례하는 경향을 나타내었다. 주상실험을 통하여 전기전도도 파과곡선과 농도 파과곡선을 동시에 구할 수 있었다. 이 결과는 전기전도도 측정기법이 벽체 내부의 임의 지점에서 중금속의 이동을 감지하고 오염물질의 누출 가능성을 확인하는 유용한 방법으로 활용될 수 있음을 나타낸다. 본 연구결과에 의하면 전기전도도 측정기법이 차단벽체 모니터링에 효과적으로 적용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Effect of slag and bentonite on shear strength parameters of sandy soil

  • A series of direct shear tests were implemented on three different types of specimens (i.e., clean Perth sand, sand containing 10, 20 and 30% bentonite, sand containing 1, 3 and 5% slag, and sand containing 10, 20 and 30% bentonite with increasing percentages of added slag (1%, 3% and 5%). This paper focuses on the shear stress characteristics of clean sand and sand mixtures. The samples were tested under different three normal stresses (100, 150 and 200 kPa) and three curing periods of no curing time, 7 and 14 days. It was observed that the shear stresses of clean sand and mixtures were increased with increasing normal stresses. In addition, the use of slag has improved the shear strength of the sand-slag mixtures; the shear stresses rose from 128.642 kPa in the clean sand at normal stress of 200 kPa to 146.89 kPa, 154 kPa and 161.14 kPa when sand was mixed with 1%, 3% and 5% slag respectively and tested at the same normal stress. Internal friction angle increased from $32.74^{\circ}$ in the clean sand to $34.87^{\circ}$, $37.12^{\circ}$ and $39.4^{\circ}$ when sand was mixed with 1%, 3% and 5% slag respectively and tested at 100, 150, and 200 kPa normal stresses. The cohesion of sand-bentonite mixtures increased from 3.34 kPa in 10% bentonite to 22.9 kPa, 70.6 kPa when sand was mixed with 20% and 30% bentonite respectively. All the mixtures of clean sand, different bentonite and slag contents showed different behaviour; some mixtures exhibited shear stress more than clean sand whereas others showed less than clean sand. The internal friction angle increased, and cohesion decreased with increasing curing time.

복합오염물질제거를 위한 현장반응층 이용에 관한 연구

  • This research was conducted to assess the performance of the mixed reactive materials with sand, iron filings, and HDTMA-bentonite for trichloroethylene (TCE) and chromate removal under controlled groundwater flow conditions. TCE and chromate removal rates with the mixtures of iron filing/HDTMA-bentonite were highest among four columns due to reduction by iron filings and sorption by HDTMA-bentonite. The greater capacity of the mixed iron filing/HDTMA-bentonite compared HDTMA-bentonite was due to an enhanced chromate reduction in addition to chromate sorption. The presence of chromate caused greater inhibition of TCE removal in the column with iron filings, while the presence of TCE caused less inhibition of TCE. Also, nitrate caused the decrease in TCE removal relative to chloride. Nitrate ions may also significantly affect TCE reduction rates by competing for electrons with the chlorinated compounds. The anion and co-existed contaminants competing effects should be considered when designed permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) composed of zero valent iron for field applications to remediate TCE and chromate.
