Rainfall infiltration through the unsaturated zone is influenced by a range of factors including topography, geology, soil, rainfall intensity, temperature and vegetation; the actual infiltration varies largely in time and space. The infiltration capacity of soil is a critical factor in identifying groundwater recharge and leakage of surface water. It may differ depending on soil types and geological features of a particular basin or territory as well as on the usage of the land. This study was conducted in forest and farmland region of the mid-mountain area (EL. 50~300 m) of Jeju Island to test soil infiltration capacity of the area where rainfall contributes to groundwater. Results were analyzed using the four soil group classification methods presented by Jeong et al. (1995) and NAS (2007) to discover that the method offered by NAS (2007) is more reliable in the mid-mountain area of Jeju Island. The study compares and reviews the existing classification methods using the results of infiltration capacity tests executed on different soil groups throughout the whole region of the Jeju mid-mountain area. It is expected that this work will serve as a guideline for evaluating surface water recharge and hydraulic characteristics of Jeju Island.

Weather is one of the important factors in the agricultural industry as it affects the price, production, and quality of crops. Upland crops are directly exposed to the natural environment because they are mainly grown in mountainous areas. Therefore, it is necessary to provide accurate weather for upland crops. This study examined the effectiveness of 12 forest soil factors to interpolate the weather in mountainous areas. The daily temperature and precipitation were collected by the Korea Meteorological Administration between January 2009 and December 2018. The Generalized Additive Model (GAM), Kriging, and Random Forest (RF) were considered to interpolate. For evaluating the interpolation performance, automatic weather stations were used as training data and automated synoptic observing systems were used as test data for cross-validation. Unfortunately, the forest soil factors were not significant to interpolate the weather in the mountainous areas. GAM with only geography aspects showed that it can interpolate well in terms of root mean squared error and mean absolute error. The significance of the factors was tested at the 5% significance level in GAM, and the climate zone code (CLZN_CD) and soil water code B (SIBFLR_LAR) were identified as relatively important factors. It has shown that CLZN_CD could help to interpolate the daily average and minimum daily temperature for upland crops.
Groundwater monitoring is commonly practiced with real-time sensors placed in several depth spots in aquifer. However, this method only provides monitoring data at the point where the sensors are installed. In this study, we developed a vertical line monitoring system (VLMS) that can provide continuous data of groundwater parameters along the vertical depth. The device was installed in a well located on the coast of the eastern part of Jeju island to monitor electrical conductivity, temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and oxidation-reduction potential over approximately 3 months from September 11 to December 3, 2020. The results indicated that the groundwater levels fluctuated with the tidal change of seawater level, and the upper and lower boundaries of the freshwater and saltwater zone in the groundwater were located at below 16 m and 36 m of mean sea level, respectively. There was a large variation in EC values during the high tide and temperature change was the greatest during flow tide. Although further investigation is needed for improvement of the device to obtain more accurate and reliable data, the device has a potential utility to provide fundamental data to understand the seawater intrusion and transport mechanisms in coastal aquifers.

This study was carried out to investigate effects of soil water content on growth and antioxidative enzymes activity of tomato seedlings during the nursery period. The water stress significantly damages morphological, physiological, and biochemical activities in plants. The seedlings planted with soil on the tray were irrigated and categorized into 3 groups with 30 g, 40 g, and 50 g of plant-soil weight. After then, the changes in weight of the soil and the seedling were measured evey 2 hours for 4 days and the leaf temperature was measured with the thermal-camera at the same time. The antioxidant enzymes were measured to determine the level of stress using all of the seedling samples. The result showed that the decrease of soil weight in the day time was faster than that in the night time, but there was no significant difference in the weight loss of the seedlings and soil among the groups. However, the group with 50 g of wight showed the highest SOD and POD contents. This is considered that the continuously wet soil on the root zone of the seedlings caused more stress for the seedlings. Therefore, it is concluded that the excess moisture content causes stress to stimulate the secretion of antioxidant enzymes, and the effect of stress is required to be analyzed comprehensively using environmental data and also the physiological data that are collected over a longer period.
Stream ecosystems carry out significant functions such as water purification, especially denitrification. However, rapid landuse change since industrialization has altered ecological functions of streams. In this study, we aimed to investigate denitrification rates and their determinant factors in streams with different landuse patterns, and how denitrification rates vary with microtopology within streams. Ten fifth streams of each landuse were selected, and each stream was divided into four microtopological sites within streams - riparian zone, subsoil, and both head and tail parts of sand bars. In situ denitrification rates and physicochemical properties of soil were examined. Denitrification rates of agricultural, urban, and forest streams were $289.62{\pm}70.69$, $157.01{\pm}37.06$, $31.38{\pm}18.65mg$$N_2O-N\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ respectively. There were no significant differences in denitrification rates depending on microtopology, but the rates in riparian zone were the highest, and the rates in the head parts of sandbars were lower than those of tail parts. The determinant factors for denitrification rates included water temperature, silt and clay contents of soil, inorganic nitrogen, and organic carbon, and these factors all showed positive correlations with denitrification rates. Through this study, we find that landuse pattern in watershed region affects denitrification rates that is one of considerable functions of streams. In addition, estimation of denitrification rates taking into account for microtopology would contribute to developing ecological management and restoration strategy of streams.
We researched community structure, species composition, and habitat environment of Dendropanax morbifera populations distributed in Goheung, Haenam, Wando (I.), and Bogildo (I.) at south coast of the Korean Peninsula. Our research was also estimated possible area for growth of Dendropanax morbifera by analyzing meteorological factors of the habitat thereof. Dendropanax morbifera community divided into Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii group and Carpinus laxiflora group by difference of species composition. Broad-leaved evergreens showed high dominance value in view of rNCD in Dendropanax morbifera community as follows: Camellia japonica (100.0), Quercus acuta (88.6), Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii (55.8), Dendropanax morbifera Lev. (41.4), Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium (23.8), Eurya japonica (19.9) and Ligustrum japonicum (11.5). In the population distribution, 94.2% of Carpinus laxiflora group consisted of sapling and small size class that are less than 5 cm in DBH while 54.2% of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii group did. The soil environment of habitat showed low soil acidity, good organic matter and water content, and good drainage. The distribution area of Dendropanax morifera habitat had $13^{\circ}C$ or more in annual mean temperature, $7.4^{\circ}C$ or more in daily minimum temperature, $100^{\circ}C$ month or more in warmth index, and approximately 1,344 mm in mean annual precipitation. Dendropanax morifera habitat corresponded to evergreen broad-leaved forest zone located in islands and coast in the southwest region of the Korean Peninsula. The northern limit line of Dendropanax morifera community was determined as Gunsan-Jeongeup-Gwangju-Jinju-Pohang-Youngdeok line based on $13^{\circ}C$ in annual mean temperature that was confirmed in natural habitat of Dendropanax morifera community.
Phenomenon of vegetation recruitment on the sand bar is drastically rising in the streams and rivers in Korea. In the 1960s prior to industrialization and urbanization, most of the streams were consisted of sands and gravels, what we call, 'White River'. Owing to dam construction, stream maintenance, etc. carried out since the '70s, the characteristic of flow duration and sediment transport have been disturbed resulting in the abundance of vegetation in the waterfront, that is, 'Green River' is under progress. This study purposed to identify the correlation among water level, water temperature, rainfall, soil moisture and soil texture out of the factors which give an effect on the vegetation recruitment on the sand bar of unregulated stream. To this purpose, this study selected the downstream of Naeseong Stream, one of sand rivers in Korea, as the river section for test and conducted the monitoring and analysis for 289 days. In addition, this study analyzed the aerial photos taken from 1970 to 2009 in order to identify the aged change in vegetation from the past to the present. The range of the tested river section was 361 m in transverse length and about 2 km in longitudinal length. According to the survey analysis, the tested river section in Naeseong Stream was a gaining river showing the higher underground-water level by 20~30 m compared to Stream water level. The difference in the underground water temperature was less than $5^{\circ}C$ by day and season and the Stream temperature did not fall to $10^{\circ}C$ and less from May when the vegetation germination begins in earnest. The impact factor on soil moisture was the underground water level in the lower layer and the rainfall in the upper layer and it was found that all the upper and lower layer were influenced by soil particle size. The soil from surface to 1 m-underground out of 6 soil moisture-measured points was sand with the $D_{50}$ size of 0.07~1.37 mm and it's assumed that the capillary height possible in the particle size would reach around 14~43 cm. On the other hand, according to the result of space analysis on the tested river section of unregulated stream for 40 years, it was found that the artificial disturbance and drought promoted the vegetation recruitment and the flooding resulted in the frequency extinction of vegetation communities. Even though the small and large scales of recruitment and extinction in vegetation have been repeated since 1970, the present vegetation area increased clearly compared to the past. It's found that the vegetation area is gradually increasing over time.
Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. is included in Umbelliferae family, it is one of the Korean traditional medicinal plants as the roots have been used to treat diseases. In this study, the growth characteristics and active compound contents of L. chuanxiong were compared among the different forest sites. As a result, root diameter and root length of L. chuanxiong was the highest in Jeongseon. Also, the fresh weight and dry weight of L. chuanxiong were the highest in Jeongseon. The total content of active compound was 23.27 mg/g the highest in Bonghwa, and 21.59 mg/g in Jeongseon, 15.87 mg/g in Hamyang was accumulated. In this study compares three forest site for cultivating of L. chuanxiong in different climate zone that the best site to product yield were Jeongseon. In this sites were located in higher altitue and lower temperature than other sites, also there were shown that lower soil moisture contents and well-drained soil. It was shown yield and active compound contents of L. chuanxiong was influenced by micro-environment conditions like as altitude, temperature, soil conditions.
Daegwallyeong area to be formed along the mountainous terrain more above 800 m of sea level is known as the cold zone to occur frequently wind, rain and fog. This study to evaluate the stability of crop production and agricultural production potential in the Daegwallyeong was calculated for the low temperature frequency of occurrence and potential evapotranspiration changes with announce the release of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) from 1972 to 2009 up to 38 years. Evapotranspiration calculated FAO and other international standard method authorized under the PENMAN-MONTEITH Method was used, and the low temperature onset and frequency of the Gumbel probability density function was used. As a result, the variation of day evaporation for 38 years were showed to respectively width of variation from maximum $9mm\;day^{-1}$ to minimum $0.5mm\;day^{-1}$. The frequency of reappearance to first emergence day that lasts more than 5 days with temperature $5^{\circ}C$ over is 3 April a 50-year frequency, 10 April a 25-year frequency, 20 April a 10-year frequency, 28 April a 5-year frequency, 8 May a 2-year frequency. Psychrotrophic crop to growth temperature more than $5^{\circ}C$ can be secured to stable production with planting after May 8, prior to planting for normal growth can be seen that the risk of growth.
Adfreeze bond strength is a primary design parameter, which determines bearing capacity of pile foundation in frozen ground. It is reported that adfreeze bond strength is influenced by various affecting factors like freezing temperature, confining pressure, characteristics of pile surface, soil type, etc. However, several limited researches have been performed to obtain adfreeze bond strength, for past studies considered only few affecting factors such as freezing temperature and type of pile structures. Therefore, there exists a limitation of estimating the design parameter of pile foundation with various factors in frozen ground. In this study, artificial neural network algorithm was involved to predict adfreeze bond strength with various affecting factors. From past five studies, 137 data for various experimental conditions were collected. It was divided by 100 training data and 37 testing data in random manner. Based on the analysis result, it was found that it is necessary to consider various affecting factors for the prediction of adfreeze bond strength and the prediction with artificial neural network algorithm provides enough reliability. In addition, the result of parametric study showed that temperature and pile type are primary affecting factors for adfreeze bond strength. And it was also shown that vertical stress influences only certain temperature zone, and various soil types and loading speeds might cause the change of evolution trend for adfreeze bond strength.
