The contents of five heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, zinc, copper and manganese in soil and vegetables collected from four sites in Busan district with composite sampling method were determined with ICP emission spectrometer. The ranges of their contents in soil were lead, $1.65\sim4.36ppm;$ cadmium, $0.05\sim0.09ppm;$ zinc, $6.33\sim11.09ppm;$ copper, $0.44\sim1.35ppm;$ manganese, $8.40\sim19.39ppm$, respectively. These contents were lower than the Clarke number. The range of heavy metal contents in four vegetables such as lettuce, radish and its roots, spinach and cabbage were lead, $0.09\sim0.48ppm;$ cadmium, $0.01\sim0.08ppm;$ zinc, $1.81\sim14.62ppm;$ copper, $0.14\sim1.87ppm;$ manganese, $0.71\sim14.5$ 5ppm with the order of Zn(7.30 ppm)>Mn(4.35 ppm)>Cu(0.53 ppm)>Pb(0.19 ppm)>Cd(0.04 ppm) in average contents. The average transfer ratio of metals from soil to vegetables was order of Zn(77.8 %)> Cd(37.5 %)>Cu(34.5 %)>Mn(18.6 %)>Pb(6.7 %). In case of the same cultivating soil, the transfer ratio could be expected to the order of spinach$lettuce{\approx}cabbage$

A realistic FEM structural model is developed to predict the behavior, load transfer, force distribution and performance of a riverine platform under earthquake and environmental loads. The interaction between the transfer plate and the piles supporting the platform is investigated. Transfer plate structures have the ability to redistribute the loads from the superstructure above to piles group below, to provide safe transits of loads to piles group and thus to the soil, without failure of soil or structural elements. The distribution of piles affects the distribution of stress on both soil and platform. A materially nonlinear earthquake response spectrum analysis was performed on this riverine platform subjected to earthquake and environmental loads. A fixed connection between the piles and the platform is better in the design of the piles and the prospect of piles collapse is low while a hinged connection makes the prospect of damage high because of the larger displacements. A fixed connection between the piles and the platform is the most demanding case in the design of the platform slab (transfer plate) because of the high stress values developed.
A method to design a critical height of embankments is presented so as to mobilize fully soil arching in pile-supported embankments. The behavior of the load transfer of embankment weights on pile cap beams was investigated by a series of model tests performed on pile-supported embankments with relatively wide space between cap beams. The model tests explained that the behavior of the load transfer depended very much on the height of embankments, because soil arching could be mobilized in pile-supported embankments only under enough high embankments. The measured vertical loads on cap beams coincided with the predicted ones estimated by the theoretical equations, which have been presented in the previous studies on the basis of load transfer mechanisms according to either the punching shear failure mode during low filling stage or the soil arching failure mode during high filling stage. The mechanism of the load transfer was shifted beyond a critical height of embankment from the punching shear mechanism to the soil arching mechanism. Therefore, in order to mobilize soil arching in pile-supported embankments, the embankments should be designed at least higher than the critical height. A theoretical equation to estimate the critical height could be derived by equalizing the vertical loads estimated by the load transfer mechanisms on the basis of both the punching shear and the soil arching. The derived theoretical equation could predict very well the experimental critical height of embankment.
Calcium plays an important role for the organisms' physiology, reproduction, and growth. Calcium amount and transfer efficiency along trophic levels were compared at two different geological areas, Limestone area (LS) and Granitic Gneiss area (GG) in 1992 and 1993. Biomass and calcium amount of plants, herbivores and carnivores were seasonally measured. The removal sweeping net method was used to collect the quantitative insect samples. Calcium content (mgCa $g^{-1}$ DM) and pH of soil were 4.85 and 7.3 at LS and 0.21 and 7.3 at GG. The calcium transfer efficiencies (%) at LS and CG were 0.2 and 4.2 from soil to plants, 0.002 and 0.02 from plants to herbivores, and 73 and 47 from herbivores to carnivores, respectively. As a whole, the high calcium content of the LS soil reduced the utilization of calcium by plants. The higher trophical levels were, the higher ecological efficiency of the biological levels was. The calcium transfer amount was higher at LS, but its efficiency was rather higher at GG.
The load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the 2D elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Slippage and shear load transfer behavior at the pile-soil interface are investigated by using a user-subroutine interface model (FRlC). It is shown that the coupled soil resistance provides the influence of pile toe settlement as the shaft resistance is increased to an ultimate limit state. The results show that the coupling effect is closely related to the value of pile diameter over rock mass modulus (D/$E_{mass}$) and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load ($R_s$/Q). Through comparisons with field case studies, the 2D numerical analysis reseanably presented load transfer of pile and coupling effect due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.
When the shear deformation occurs on the slope reinforced with soil nail, a passive earth pressure is induced on the ground around the soil nail and the increase of shear deformation causes the earth pressure variation of the ground and the deformation and member force change of the soil nail. In this study, the shear behavior of the soil nail was analyzed experimentally by inducing the shear deformation in the vertical direction of the soil nail using a large-scale direct shear test equipment and it was verified through numerical analysis. The shear test was performed on the bonded length (6D, 8D, 10D and 12D) of the soil nail separated from the shear surface. As a result, it was observed that the continuous increase of the shear deformation caused the damage of the grout and the effect according to the bonded length was analyzed. Through the model test and the numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the transfer length of the soil nail was 0.2~0.22m, which is larger than 0.1m suggested in the previous study, and the shear zone was in the range of 0.6m from the shear surface.

The load transfer mechanism of hybrid model of soil-nailing and compression anchor is studied in this paper. The hybrid model is composed of an anchor bar (installed at the tip) with two PC strands and a steel bar. It can make active behavior of skin friction by applying the pre-stress. In this paper, the load transfer mechanisms of soil-nailings, compression anchors, and hybrid models, respectively, are obtained from skin friction theory and load transfer theory. Field pullout tests are performed to identify the load transfer mechanism and experimental results are compared with analytical solution. In case of soil-nailings, the tension load is transferred from face to tip, however, in case of compression anchors, the compression load is transferred from tip to face. The experimental behavior of the hybrid model is similar to that of compression anchor when only pre-stress is applied. If the pullout test is performed by simultaneously pulling out the anchor and the nail, the compression load is dominant at the tip and tension load is dominant at the face. The load transfer mechanism of the hybrid model shows the combined behavior of soil-nailings with compression anchors.

The load distribution and deformation of drilled shafts subjected to axial loads were evaluated by a load transfer approach. The emphasis was on quantifying the load transfer mechanism at the interface between the shafts and surrounding highly weathered rocks based on a numerical analysis and small-scale tension load tests performed on nine instrumented piles. An analytical method that takes into account the soil coupling effect was developed using a modified Mindlin's point load solution. Based on the analysis, a single-modified hyperbolic model is proposed for the shear transfer function of drilled shafts in highly weathered rocks. Through comparisons with field case studies, it is found that the prediction by the present approach is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in-situ measurements.
Generally, ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems have a higher performance than conventional air-source systems. However, the major fault of GSHP systems is their expensive boring costs. Therefore, it is important issue that to reduce initial cost and ensure stability of system through accurate prediction of the heat extraction and injection rates of the ground heat exchanger. Conventional analysis methods employed by line source theory are used to predict heat transfer rate between ground heat exchanger and soil. Shape of ground heat exchanger was simplified by equivalent diameter model, but these methods do not accurately reflect the heat transfer characteristics according to the heat exchanger geometry. In this study, a numerical model that combines a user subroutine module that calculates circulation water conditions in the ground heat exchanger and FEFLOW program which can simulate heat/moisture transfer in the soil, is developed. Heat transfer performance was evaluated for 3 different types ground heat exchanger(U-tube, Double U-tube, Coaxial).
