Heavy metal pollution in agricultural field near at the abandoned metal mines has been a critical issue in Korea. In particular, bioaccumulation in plants can have detrimental effect on human health. Main objective of this research was to examine arsenic (As) concentration in soil with varied extraction methods and to determine bioaccumulation and biological transfer factor in different crops. Results showed that bioaccumulation ratio of As for total contents in soil was ordered leafy and stem vegetables (1.19%) > fruit bearing vegetables (0.79%) > pulses (0.40%) > root vegetables (0.36%) with different crop species. Among 6 different extraction methods, all of extraction methods showed high correlation ($R^2=0.87-0.97$) except DTPA ($R^2=0.25$) when comparing As concentration in soil extracted with different extractants and As concentration in each crops. Calculated biological transfer factor was ranged 0.002-0.018 depending on crop species. Overall, concentration of As in crops can be varied and best management practice for minimizing bioaccumulation of As should be considered depending on crop species.

This study presents a numerical simulation model of vertical ground heat exchangers, considering unsaturated hydro static ground conditions induced by the ground water table fluctuation. Heat transfer in ground and grout is modeled by a 3-D FEM transient conductive heat transfer model, where heat transfer between circulating fluid and heat exchanging pipe is treated as 1-D quasi steady state forced convective elements. To take into account the unsaturated ground condition, soil thermal conductivity and heat capacity which are dependent on the matric suction are applied to ground elements. Parametric studies considering various ground water table conditions are conducted to investigate the influence of unsaturated hydro static ground condition on the mean heat exchange rate of ground heat exchanger. Simulation results considering water table fluctuation show 60~100% of mean heat exchange rate for a saturated soil condition and 125~208% of that for a dry soil condition. Thus consideration of unsaturated soil condition is substantially recommended for more accurate design and performance evaluation for ground heat exchangers.

In this study, the mass transfer behaviors of phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene in soil slurry reactor (SSR) using two-liquid phase (TLP) system were investigated. The mass transfer ratio and rate of PAH in the TLP system using light paraffine oil, which has the highest solubility of PAH, were influenced by the amount of light paraffine oil and mixing speed. When the amount of light paraffine oil decreased from 15 % to 2.5 % (v/v), the mass transfer ratio of anthracene decreased significantly compared with that of phenanthrene and pyrene. As mixing speed increased, the initial mass transfer rate of PAH within 1 day was enhanced. However, each final mass transfer ratio of three PAHs after 5 day was similar irrespective of mixing speed.

The current study was conducted to monitor the possibility of the gene transfer among soil bacteria, including the effect of drift due to rain and surface water, in relation to the release of genetically modified organisms into the environment. Four types of bacteria, each with a distinct antibiotic marker, kanamycin-resistant P. fluorescens, rifampicin-resistant P. putida, chloramphenicol-resistant B. subtilis, and spectinomycin-resistant B. subtilis, were plated using a small-scale soil-core device designed to track drifting microorganisms. After three weeks of culture in the device, no Pseudomonas colonies resistant to both kanamycin and rifampicin were found. Likewise, no Bacillus colonies resistant to both chloramphenicol and spectinomycin were found. The gene transfer from glyphosate-tolerant soybeans to soil bacteria, including Rhizobium spp. as a symbiotic bacteria, was examined by hybridization using the DNA extracted from soil taken from pots, in which glyphosate-tolerant soybeans had been growing for 6 months. The results showed that 35S, T-nos, and EPSPS were observed in the positive control, but not in the DNA extracted from the soilborne microorganisms. In addition, no transgenes, such as the 35S promoter, T-nos, and EPSPS introduced into the GMO soybeans were detected in soilborne bacteria, Rhizobium leguminosarum, thereby strongly rejecting the possibility of gene transfer from the GMO soybeans to the bacterium.
Risk-based screening levels (RBSLs) of some pollutants for residential adults were derived with risk assessment tools developed by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and Korea Ministry of Environment (KMOE) and compared each other. To make the comparison simple, ingestion of soil, dermal contact with soil, outdoor inhalation of vapors, indoor inhalation of vapors, and inhalation of soil particulates were chosen as exposure pathways. The results showed that the derived RBSLs varied for every exposure pathway. For direct exposure pathways (i.e., ingestion of soil and dermal contact with soil), the derived RBSLs varied mainly due to the different default values for exposure factors and toxicity data. When identical default values for the parameters were used, the same RBSLs could be derived regardless of the assessment tools used. For inhalation of vapors and inhalation of soil particulates, however, different analysis methods for cross-media transfer rates were used and different assumptions were established for each tool, identical RBSLs could not be obtained even if the same default values for exposure factors were used. Especially for inhalation of soil particulates pathway, screening level derived using KMOE approach (most conservative) was approximately 5000~10000 times lower than the screening level derived using ASTM approach (least conservative). Our results suggest that, when deriving RBSL using a specific tool, it is a prerequisite to technically review the analysis methods for cross-media transfer rates as well as to understand how the assessment tool derives the default values for exposure factors.
The operating temperature range of the natural gas pipeline in Arctic environment would be controlled primarily to optimize gas throughput and to minimize the environmental impact resulting from operation of such pipelines. The temperature of the gas as it flows through the pipeline is a function of both the Joule-Thomson effect and the pipe to soil heat transfer. Therefore, the heat transfer and Joule-Thomson effect of the buried natural gas pipeline in this study were carefully considered. Soil temperatures and overall heat transfer coefficients were assumed to be $0{\sim}-20^{\circ}C$ and $0{\sim}5.5W/m^2K$, respectively. The gas temperature and pressure calculations along a pipeline were performed simultaneously at different soil temperatures and overall heat transfer coefficients. Also, this study predicted the phase change and hydrate formation for different soil temperatures and overall heat transfer coefficients using HYSYS simulation package.

The load distribution and deformation of pile subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance that is closely related to the ratio of pile diameter to soil modulus $(D/E_s)$ and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load $(R_s/Q)$, in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the coupled load-transfer method. The proposed analytical method that takes into account the soil coupling effect was developed using a modified Mindlin's point load solution. Through comparisons with field case studies, it was found that the proposed method in the present study estimated reasonable load transfer behavior of pile and coupling effects due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.

Electron transfer is the major natural process governing the behavior of contaminants in soils and groundwaters. Biological degradation of contaminants, i.e., microbial transformation of hazardous compounds, is a well known irreversible electron transfer process. Although it is not well defined as a separate process, abiotic electron-transfer is also an important process for mobilizing/demobilizing inorganic contaminants in soils and groundwaters. Therefore, numerous remedial technologies have been developed on the basis of electron transfer concept. Among them,

To investigate the possibility of horizontal gene transfer between agricultural microorganisms and soil microorganisms in the environment, Bacillus subtilis KB producing iturin and the PGPR recombinant strain Pseudomonas fluorescens MX1 were used as model microorganisms. The soil samples of cucumber or tomato plants cultivated in pots and the greenhouse for a six month period were investigated by PCR, real-time PCR, Southern hybridization, and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) fingerprinting. Our data from Southern blotting and T-RFLP patterns suggest that the model bacteria do not give significant impacts on the other bacteria in the pots and greenhouse during cultivation.
In this study, soil seed and bud bank analysis were performed to abbess the mass of potential vegetation in soils less than 1 year old after covered and estimate the amount of seed bank transport through construction in urban area. The ratio of exotic species number to total species number in study sites and the landfill control site was 0.29 and 0.39, respectively. All plots pooled, mean species number and total mean seedling density per $\m^2$ in the top 10 cm of soil was 11$\pm$0 (average$\pm$S.E.) and 8037$\pm$221.Total plant seeds by artificial soil trasnsfer were estimated to be 53 thousand million $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$ in 10 cm soil depth. It reveals that soil transfer accelerates seeds and vegetation movement and makes urban vegetation mixed and common.
