The laboratory tests and field plate load test were carried out to evaluate the reinforcement effect of geocell for road construction. The geocell-reinforced subgrade shows the increment of cohesion and friction angle with comparison of non-reinforced subgrade. In addition, the field plate load test was performed on the geocell-reinforced subgrade to estimate the bearing capacity of soil. The direct shear test was conducted with utilizing a large-scale shear box to evaluate the internal soil friction angle with geocell reinforcement. The number of cells in the geocell system is varied to investigate the effect of soil reinforcement. The theoretical bearing capacity of subgrade soil with and without geocell reinforcement was estimated by using the soil internal friction angle. The field plate load tests were also conducted to estimate the bearing capacity with geocell reinforcement. It is found out that the bearing capacity of geocell-reinforced subgrade gives 2 times higher value than that of unreinforced subgrade soil. The settlement and the distribution of deformation were also estimated by using the finite element method. The magnitude of settlements on the geocell-reinforced subgrade and unreinforced subgrade are 6.8cm and 1.2cm, respectively.
A pilot-scale model test was performed to estimate the availability of new material, Fe-loaded zeolite, as the filling material in permeable reactive barrier (PRB) against the contaminated groundwater with both Cd and Cr(VI). Aquifer was simulated by filling up a large scale soil tank with sands, and mobilizing the water flow by the head difference of water level in both ends of the tank. Then, the mixture of concentrated Cd and Cr(VI) solution was injected into the aquifer to form a contaminant plume, and its behavior through Fe-loaded zeolite barrier was monitored. The test results showed that Fe-loaded zeolite barrier successfully treated the contaminant plume containing both Cd and Cr(VI) and that the immobilized contaminants in the barrier were not desorbed or released. The results indicated that the Fe-loaded zeolite could be a promising material in PRBs against the multiple contaminants with different ionic forms like Cr(VI) and Cd.
In seasonal frozen areas with climatic features, which have a temperature difference in the winter and thawing season, changes of mechanical properties of the soil in the zone could be seen between the freezing and thawing surface. In particular, in soil with many fine particles, a softening of the roadbed usually occurs from frost and thawing actions. The lower bearing capacity is a rapidly progressive the softening of roadbed, and occurred a mud-pumping by repeated loading. In this study, the three kind of sandy soil with contents of fine particles were conducted by directly shear box test with the number of cyclic in freeze-thawing and the water content of soil. Subsequently, the relationship between the shear strength and freeze-thaw cycling time was obtained. The shear strength was decreased with the increase of the freeze-thaw cycling time. A shear stress deterioration of the soil with power function modal is proposal.

In this study, aluminum electrodes were put in marine clay which was taken from the south coast in Korea to increase the undrained shear strength by inducing the densification and cementation between clay particles and precipitates which were developed by electric decomposition in an electrode. To raise the cementation rate and reduce treatment time, high electric current (2.5A) was applied in each electrode at a semi-pilot scale soil box with marine clay. After the tests, the undrained shear strength was measured at designated points using a static cone penetration test device and sampling was conducted simultaneously in order to measure water content, pH and electric conductivity which would be the key for configuring the cementation effects indirectly. In the results of electric decomposition in aluminum electrode, the measured shear strength was increased considerably compared to the initial shear strength because of the cementation effect between iron ions and soil particles.
A series of trapdoor model tests was systematically performed in order to investigate soil arching. The mobilized soil arching was clearly observed by change of the vertical earth pressure loaded on trapdoor of soil container box. A slow decent of the loading plate at the trapdoor results in loosening zone over the trapdoor and the stress in this loosening zone was transferred to the stationary zone in the vicinity of the trapdoor. In particular, it was observed that the vertical earth pressure rapidly decreased in the loosening zone and increased in the stationary zone at the trapdoor. Both the maximum decreasing rate of the vertical earth pressure in the loosening zone and the increasing rate of the vertical earth pressure in the stationary zone were not influenced by the ground density, but affected by the size of the trapdoor. The loosening zone could be defined by the elliptical configuration, in which the major axis was twice as long as the height of the loosening zone at the center of trapdoor and the minor axis was the same as the width of trapdoor. The height of loosening zone at the center of trapdoor was one and a half times as long as the width of trapdoor loading plate.
In the current practice for slope stability problem in Japan, the shear strength, $\tau$, mobilized along the failure surface is usually estimated based on an empirical approximation in which the cohesion, c, is assumed to be equal to the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface, d(m). This approximation is advantageous in that the result of stability analysis is not influenced by the designers in charge. However, since the methodology has little theoretical background, the cohesion may often be grossly overestimated, and conversely the angle of shear resistance, $\phi$, is significantly underestimated, when the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface is quite large. In this paper, a case record of natural slope failure that took place in Hyogo Prefecture in 2007, is described in detail for the case in which the shear strength along the collapsed surface was carefully examined in a series of direct shear box (DSB) tests by considering the effects of in-situ shear stress along the slip surface. It is demonstrated that the factor of safety agrees with that of in-situ conditions when the shear strength from this kind of DSB test was employed for the back-analysis of the slope failure.

Recently, ground subsidence frequently occurs in downtown area. The major causes of the subsidence on the subsurface were the damages of the water supply and sewer pipelines and excavation works in adjacent areas, etc. Because of these various factors, it is not easy to analyze the tendency of occurrence of ground subsidence. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of ground subsidence by the change of the fine particle content and ground water level and to establish the ground subsidence mechanism. In this study, a model soil-box was manufactured to simulate the failure of the old sewer pipe which is one of the causes on ground subsidence. And a model test was conducted to investigate the effects of fine contents and ground water level on the cavity occurrence. From the test results, firstly the higher the ground water level, the faster the primary cavity is formed as the seepage stress increases. As a result, the secondary cavity and the ground subsidence rapidly progress due to the relaxation of the surrounding ground. The total amount of discharged soil was decreased as the fine content increased.
The model tests are conducted to assess the behavior characteristics of geogrid reinforced soil walls according to different surcharge pressures and reinforcement spacings. The models are built in the box having dimension, 100cm tall, 140cm long, and 100cm wide. The reinforcement used is geogrid(tensile strength 2.26t/m). Decomposed ganite soil(SM) is used as a backfill material. The strain gauges and LVDTs are Installed to obtain the strain in the reinforcements and the displacements of the wall face. From the results, it can be concluded that the more the reinforcement tensile strength increases, the more the wall displacements and the geogrid strains decreases. The maximum wall displacements and geogrid strains of the model walls occur due to the uniform surcharge pressure at the 0.7H from the bottom of the wall. The horizontal displacements of the wall face nonlinearly increase with the increase of surcharge pressures, and this nonlinear behavior is significantly presented for larger surcharge due to the nonlinear tensile strength-strain relationship of the reinforcements.

The paper describes a simple numerical FLAC model that was developed to simulate the dynamic response of two instrumented reduced-scale model reinforced soil walls constructed on a 1-g shaking table. The models were 1 m high by 1.4 m wide by 2.4 m long and were constructed with a uniform size sand backfill, a polymeric geogrid reinforcement material with appropriately scaled stiffness, and a structural full-height rigid panel facing. The wall toe was constructed to simulate a perfectly hinged toe (i.e. toe allowed to rotate only) in one model and an idealized sliding toe (i.e. toe allowed to rotate and slide horizontally) in the other. Physical and numerical models were subjected to the same stepped amplitude sinusoidal base acceleration record. The material properties of the component materials (e.g. backfill and reinforcement) were determined from independent laboratory testing (reinforcement) and by back-fitting results of a numerical FLAC model for direct shear box testing to the corresponding physical test results. A simple elastic-plastic model with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for the sand was judged to give satisfactory agreement with measured wall results. The numerical results are also compared to closed-form solutions for reinforcement loads. In most cases predicted and closed-form solutions fall within the accuracy of measured loads based on ${\pm}1$ standard deviation applied to physical measurements. The paper summarizes important lessons learned and implications to the seismic design and performance of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls.

In this paper the model tests have been conducted and the results were compared with those by the theoretical methods to study the behaviors of the piled raft. The size of model box is 2.2m${\times}$2m${\times}$2m. The raft is made of rigid steel plate and piles are made of steel pipes. Generally the bearing capacity of group piles is designed with only the pile capacities, which is Ignored the bearing capacity of raft. But the uncertainty of pile-raft-soil interaction leads to conservative design ignoring the bearing effects of raft. In the case of considering the bearing capacity of raft, the simple sum of bearing capacity of raft and that of each pile cannot be the bearing capacity of piled raft. Because the pile-raft-soil interaction affects the behavior of piled raft. Thus the effects of pile-raft-soil interaction are very important in the optimal design. In this paper, the behaviors of piled raft are studied through model tests of 2${\times}$2, 2${\times}$3, and 3${\times}$3 pile groups. The spacing between piles is changed in the model tests. And the behaviors of free standing and piled raft are also studied.
