In this study, we evaluated the early strength of red clay soil with the polymer aqueous solution at rammed earth construction. In order to satisfy the demolding strength of the formwork be due to the rammed of red clay soil, the polymer aqueous solution was added to evaluate the compressive strength at the early age according to the consolidation level. As a result, a high compressive strength was exhibited with the formulation to which the polymer aqueous solution was added.
The pozzolanic characteristics of a sludge incinerated into ash were determined in this study. Lime is commonly used as a stabilizer for the treatment of soils, whereas sewage sludge ash (SSA) is often applied with lime to improve soft subgrade soil. In this study, a cohesive soil categorized as A-4 (low-plasticity clay) by AASHTO classifications was mixed with SSA/lime with a 3:1 ratio. Nano-$SiO_2$ was also added to the soil. To identify changes in the workability, strength, permeability, and shear strength of the soft subgrade soil, basic soil tests were conducted, and the microstructure of the treated soil was analyzed. The results indicate that SSA/lime mixtures improve the properties of soft subgrade soil and transform the soil from "poor subgrade soil" to "good to excellent subgrade soil" with a CBR > 8. Additionally, the addition of 2% nano-$SiO_2$ increases the unconfined compressive strength of soft subgrade soil treated with SSA/lime mixture by approximately 17 kPa. However, the swelling of the treated soil increased by approximately 0.1% after the addition of nano-$SiO_2$ and lime. Thus, soil swelling should be considered before lime and nano-$SiO_2$ are applied to soft subgrade soil.

This study examined the effect of binder-to-soil ratio(B/S) and water-to-binder ratio(W/B) on the flow and compressive strength development of soil concrete using high-volume supplementary cementitious materials. As a partial replacement of ordinary portland cement, 10% by-pass dust, 40% ground granulated blast-furnace slag, and 25% circulating fluidized bed combustion fly ash were determined in the preliminary tests. Using the low-cement binder incorporated with clay soil or sandy soil, a total of 18 soil concrete mixtures was prepared. The flow of the soil concrete tended to increase with the increase in W/B and B/S, regardless of the type of soils. The compressive strength was commonly higher in sandy soil concrete than in clay soil concrete with the same mixture condition. Considering the high-workability and compressive strength development, it could be recommended for low-cement soil concrete to be mixed under the following condition: B/S of 0.35 and W/B of 175%.

For the efficient recovering of collapsed sloped soil, using a soil binder that can support the soil strongly and help the growth of plants is very important. The soil binder should also have functions of recovering the soil ecologically as well as be environmental friendly materials. In this research, optimum values of the water content and permeability and direct shear strength were searched by adding the water absorbent and coagulant into the soil binder. The polyacrylamide (PAM) with various anionic strength, super absorbent polymer (SAP) and cellulose ether (CE) were used as a soil binder, water absorbent and coagulant, respectively. Effects of the soil binder on the characteristics of soil were observed by changing the mixing ratio of PAM, SAP and CE. Experimental results showed that the soil binder increased the direct shear strength tens of times and the water content around two times, whereas decreased the water permeability. Also, the addition of CE to increase the coagulation of SAP increased more of the direct shear strength and water content.
Most marine structures are constructed on very soft soil, soil improvements are needed for the area of road, buildings. In this paper, some considerations of several case studies on soil placement method after geotextile placement, known as surface treatment, are done. Considerations of strength applicability on the advanced construction method of sand and soil placement are proposed in this paper. Typical tensile strength of geotextile used in the surface soil stabilization method is 15t/m, and thickness of sand and soil placement between 1.6m and 3.1m. Undrained shear strength of soft clay layer ranges $0.2{\sim}1.2t/m^2$. In order to minimize the difficulties which include soil disturbance, soft soil gush and overturn of vertical drain installation rig more studies are needed.
Ready-mixed soil material, known as a kind of controlled low-strength material, is a new way of soil cement combination. It can be used as backfill materials. In this paper, artificial neural network and nonlinear regression approach were applied to predict the compressive strength of ready-mixed soil material containing Portland cement, slag, sand, and soil in mixture. The data used for analyzing were obtained from our testing program. In the experiment, we carried out a mix design with three proportions of sand to soil (e.g., 6:4, 5:5, and 4:6). In addition, blast furnace slag partially replaced cement to improve workability, whereas the water-to-binder ratio was fixed. Testing was conducted on samples to estimate its engineering properties as per ASTM such as flowability, strength, and pulse velocity. Based on testing data, the empirical pulse velocity-strength correlation was established by regression method. Next, three topologies of neural network were developed to predict the strength, namely ANN-I, ANN-II, and ANN-III. The first two models are back-propagation feed-forward networks, and the other one is radial basis neural network. The results show that the compressive strength of ready-mixed soil material can be well-predicted from neural networks. Among all currently proposed neural network models, the ANN-I gives the best prediction because it is closest to the actual strength. Moreover, considering combination of pulse velocity and other factors, viz. curing time, and material contents in mixture, the proposed neural networks offer better evaluation than interpolated from pulse velocity only.

The characteristics and prediction model for the shear strength of unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the net normal stress on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests and SWCC tests were carried out varying the net normal stress, and the experimental data for unsaturated shear strength tests were compared with predicted shear strength envelopes using existing prediction models. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the net normal stress. Therefore, to achieve a truly descriptive shear strength envelope for unsaturated soils, tile effect of the normal stress on the contribution of matric suction to the shear strength has to be taken into consideration. In this paper, a modified prediction model for the unsaturated shear strength was proposed.

This study was conducted to investigate the strength of soil cements for varied molding water content and cement content(3,6,9,12%) in four cementstabilized soils(KY: sand, MH: sad, SS: sandy loam, JJ: loam). The eoperimental results obtainedfrom unconfined compressive strength tests are asfollows: 1. The optimum moisture content increased in accordance with the increase of the cement while maximum dry density didn't change uniformly. 2. The moisture content for maximum strength was higher than the optimum moisture content in the higher cement content. Moisture-density curves showed a dull peak in the higher cement contents, on the other hand, a sharp peak in the lower cement contents. 3. In molding the specimen with the approximate optimum moisture content, the maximum strength showed at the wet side of the optimum moisture content. 4. SS and JJ maybe used as cement-stabilized base of road to require 300PSI of compressive strength cured seven days, but MH and KY may be not adequate. 5. In soil cement, the better the grain size distribution was, the stronger the compressive strength was itn general. 6. The relation between 28-day strengh and 7-day strength in the cementstabilized four soils may be expressed as follows: q28=1.55q7+1.5 in which q28:28-day strength. q7:7-day strength.

In order to investigate the effect of the water content and the accelerated curing on the strength of the soil-cement mixtures, laboratory test of soil cement mixtures was performed at five levels of water content, four levels of accelerated curing temperatures, three levels of normal curing periods, and six levels of accelerated curing time. Also this study was carried out to investigate the effect of grain size distribution of 21 types of soils on the strength of soil-cement mixtures at four levels of cement content and three levels of curing time. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Optimum moisture content increased with increase of the cement content, but maximum dry density was changed ununiformly with cement content. Water content corresponding to the maximum strength was a little higher than the optimum moisture content along the increase of cement content. 2. In molding the specimens with the optimum moisture content, the maximum strength appeared at the wet side of the optimum moisture content. 3. According to increase of curing temperature as 30, 40, 50, and 60$^{\circ}C$, unconiiend compressive strength of soil-cement mixtures increased, the rate of increase at the early curing period was large, and approximately 120 hours was suifficient to harden soil-cement mixtures completely. 4. The strength of soil-cement mixtures at the curing temperature of 10$^{\circ}C$ decreased at the rate of 30 to 50 percent than at the curing temperature of 20$^{\circ}C$, and the strength of soil-cement mixtures at the curing temperature of 0$^{\circ}C$ increased a little with increase of curing time. 5. Although the strength of soil-cement mixtures seemed to be a little affected by the temperature difference between day time and night, it was recommended that reasonable working period was the duration from July to August of which average maximum temperature of Korea was approximately 30$^{\circ}C$. 6. Accelerated curing time corresponding to the normal curing time of 28-day was shorten with increase of curing temperature, also it was a little affected by the cement. Accelerated curing time that the strength of soil-cement mixtures for the cement of 9 percent and the curing temperature of 60was shorten with increase of curing temperature, also it was a little affected by the cement. Accelerated curing time that the strength of soil-cement mix- tures for the cement of 9 percent and the curing temperature of 60$^{\circ}C$ was 45 hours at the KY sample, 50 hours at the MH, 40 hours at the SS, and 34 hours at the JJ respectively. 7. Accelerated curing time was depended upon the grain size distribution of soil, it decreased with increase the percent passing of No. 200 sieve. 8. Relationship between the normal curing times and the accelerated curing times showed that there was a linear relationship between them, its slope decreased with increase of curing temperature. 9. The most reasonable soil of the soil-cement mixtures was the sandy loam which was a well graded soil. Assuming the base of road requiring 7-day strength of 21 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ being used, the soil-cement mixtures could be obtained with adding 6 percent of cement in such a sails S-7, S-8, S-9, S-10, S-11, S-12, S-13. 10. The regression equation between the 28-day and the 7-day strength was obtained as follow; q28=1.12q7,+6.5(r=0.96).

This study was conducted to evaluate effects by adding oil to clay soil and influences of remained oil in soil as time elapsed. Unconfined compression test and direct shear test were performed to analyze strength properties of contaminants in clayey soil. As a results of $q_u$ test for kerosene and diesel contaminated clayey soil indicate that were decreased from near 5% oil content rapidly and the declination of strength were blunt as oil content over 10%. The cohesions(c) and internal friction angle(${\psi}$) of kerosene contaminated clayey soil were not varied as quantities of kerosene in clayey soil increased. In the case of diesel contaminated clayey soil, the cohesions(c) were decreased and the internal friction angle(${\psi}$) were increased.
