The construction of waste landfill sites has been increased due to recent expansion of various waste. Geotextiles are widely used for the purpose of reinforcement and protection of waste inside the landfill. Geotextile affects the shear behavior of waste landfill which forms the contact surface with soil. In this study, the effect of acidic and alkaline components in leachate has been analyzed through the laboratory experiment on the shear stress reduction of the contact surface of ground-geotextile under the cyclic load. For this purpose, a dynamic contact surface shear tester has been manufactured, and cyclic simple shear tests have been performed using geotextile and soil specimen which were immersed in chemical solutions for 60 and 840 days, respectively. Based on the Disturbed State Concept, the characteristics of shear stress on the contact surface of ground-geotextile due to chemical factors have been identified by the disturbance function.
Time effect on the deformation and strength characteristics of geogrid reinforced sand retaining wall has become an important issue in geotechnical and transportation engineering. Three physical model tests on geogrid reinforced sand retaining walls performed under various loading conditions were simulated to study their rate-dependent behaviors, using the presented nonlinear finite element method (FEM) analysis procedure. This FEM was based on the dynamic relaxation method and return mapping scheme, in which the combined effects of the rate-dependent behaviors of both the backfill soil and the geosynthetic reinforcement have been included. The rate-dependent behaviors of sands and geogrids should be attributed to the viscous property of materials, which can be described by the unified three-component elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model. By comparing the FEM simulations and the test results, it can be found that the present FEM was able to be successfully extended to the boundary value problems of geosynthetic reinforced soil retaining walls. The deformation and strength characteristics of the geogrid reinforced sand retaining walls can be well reproduced. Loading rate effect, the trends of jump in footing pressure upon the step-changes in the loading rate, occurred not only on sands and geogrids but also on geogrid reinforced sands retaining walls. The lateral earth pressure distributions against the back of retaining wall, the local tensile force in the geogrid arranged in the retaining wall and the local stresses beneath the footing under various loading conditions can also be predicted well in the FEM simulations.
In this study reinforcing effect of soil nailed-drilled shafts subjected to axial and lateral loads was evaluated. Special attention was given to the reinforcing effects of soil nails placed from the drilled shafts to surrounding weathered- and soft-rocks based on model tests, numerical analyses and field tests. The model tests and numerical analyses are conducted to analyze the reinforcing effect of various conditions of number, inclination, position and length. The results of 1/40 scale model tests and numerical analyses show that as the number of reinforcing level increases, the incremental effect of reinforcement tends to increase, whereas the reinforcing effect on relative position is negligible. In addition there is a reinforcing effect as the inclination angle increase up to 30 degrees. Based on the results of tensile load tests, soil nailed-drilled shaft has a considerably smaller settlement to reach the ultimate level compared with the result of un-reinforced drilled shafts. For compression tests, there is a reinforcing effect of about 200% measured.

Generally, a modified version of limit equilibrium method can be used to evaluate a slope stability of the geosynthetic reinforced soil slopes. In most cases, resisting effects of geosynthetic reinforcement are dealt with considering an increased shear strength on the potential slip surface. However, it is not clear that the methods satisfy all three equilibrium equations. As we know, the pattern of normal stress distribution along the slip surface is the key factor in calculating the safety factor of slopes. In this study, the new slope stability analysis method in which not only reinforcing effects of geosynthetics can be considered but also all three equilibrium equations can be satisfied was proposed with assuming the normal stress distribution along the slip surface as quadratic curve with horizontal $\chi-coordinate$. A number of illustrative examples, including published slope stability analysis examples for the reinforced and unreinforced soil slopes, loading test of large scale reinforced earth wall and centrifuge model tests on the geotextile reinforced soil slopes, were analyzed. As a result, it is shown that the newly suggested method yields a relatively accurate factor of safety for the reinforced and unreinforced soil slopes.
Because of the increasing use of clayey soil as the backfill in reinfurced soil structures and embankments, nonwoven geotextiles of drain capability have been receiving much attention. However, there are few studies on the deformation behavior analysis of nonwoven geotextiles in reinforced soil structures in the site because nonwoven geotextiles which have low tensile stiffness and higher deformability than geogrids and woven geotextiles, are difficult to measure their deformation by using strain gauges. In this study, it was suggested that a new and more convenient method could measure the deformation behaviour of nonwoven geotextile using a strain gauge and examine the availability of the method by conducting laboratory tests and applying to two geosynthetics reinforced soil (GRS) walls in the site. The result of wide-width tensile test conducted under confining pressure of 70 kPa shows that the local deformation of nonwoven geotextile to be measured with strain gauges has a similar pattern to the total deformation measured with LVDT. In the GRS walls, nonwoven geotextile shows a larger deformation range than the woven geotextile and geogrid. However, the deformation patterns of these three reinforcement materials are similar. The function of strain gauges attached to nonwoven geotextile in the walls works normally for 16 months. Therefore, the method proposed in this study for measuring nonwoven geotextile deformation using a strain gauge has proved useful.
In this study, to reinforce the surface layer of weathered soil slopes where erosion and collapse of surface layer occur, compression strength tests were conducted by mixing carbon fiber and eco-friendly stabilizer (E.S.B.) To determine the optimal mixing ratio of E.S.B. and carbon fiber, E.S.B. was set at conditions of 10%, 20%, and 30%, and carbon fiber at 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9%, and 1.2%. Additionally, to analyze the changes in compressive strength according to dry density and curing period, 85% and 95% of the maximum dry unit weight were applied, and curing periods were set to 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days. The standard strength for surface layer reinforcement of slopes is proposed as 4 MPa at 7 days and 6 MPa at 28 days according to ACI 230.1R-09 (2009). The compression test results showed that the unconfined compressive strength of E.S.B. reinforced soil met the standard strength at an E.S.B. mixing ratio of 10% or more for 95% compaction. Moreover, when carbon fiber was mixed with E.S.B. reinforced soil, a ductile fracture pattern was observed after the yield point due to compressive strength, indicating that the mixture could compensate for post-yield failure. It was analyzed that the maximum strength is exhibited at a carbon fiber mixing ratio of 0.6%. The unconfined compressive strength of carbon fiber reinforced soil increases by approximately 54-70% compared to the condition without carbon fiber.
Soil and rock improvement and reinforcement techniques are applied to achieve safe tunnel excavation in difficult geological conditions. The Umbrella Arch Method(UAM), one of the auxiliary techniques, is used to reduce ground permeability and improve stabtility of the tunnel by inserting a series of steel pipes into ground around the crown inclined to the longitudinal axis of the tunnel. Additionally, multi-step grouting is added through the steel pipes. UAM combines the advantages of a modern forepoling system with the grouting injection method. This technique has been applied in subway, road and utility tunneling sites for the last few years in Korea. This paper presents the results of analysis of the case studies on ground movements associated with UAM used in the Seoul Subway line 5 constructon site. Improvement of tunnel stability and decrease of ground settlement expected with pipe insertion are also discussed. Finally, the method to minimize ground settlements caused by NATM tunnelling are suggested.
Grouting technique is frequently used where a tunnel structure is passing through the shallow overburden area or where the thickness of hard rock above the tunnel is rather thin. However, engineering background on design process of the grout reinforcement does not seem to be fully understood until now. Mechanics of composite material is, therefore, introduced in this study to investigate the orthotropic material properties of the composites containing soil(or rock) and grouting material. These orthotropic material properties can be used to represent the reinfocement effects quantitatively. The model developed in this study is next applied to a typical tunnel structure and the grouting effect is analyzed numerically. The idea used in this study can be expanded to a situation where a pipe roofing or a forepoling technique is adopted and a simplified design procedure, similar to the model model introduced in this study, can be developed.

A new type bridge combining an integral bridge and a pair of geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) retaining walls having full-height rigid (FHR) facings, called the GRS integral bridge, is proposed. The geosynthetic reinforcement layers are connected to the FHR facings (i.e., RC parapets) that are integrated with a girder without using any girder-support. GRS integral bridges are basically much more cost-effective in construction and long-term maintenance while having a much higher seismic stability than conventional-type bridges having a girder via movable and fixed supports on a pair of cantilever abutments. GRS integral bridges are better than bridges using GRS retaining walls as abutments and also than conventional integral bridges with unreinforced backfill. To validate the above, a series of static cyclic lateral loading tests of the facing and a series of shaking table tests were performed on smallscaled models of different bridge types.

The efficient foundation design of apartment buildings needs to include the effect of upper structure on foundation behavior. In this study, a foundation design method effectively considering upper structure stiffness using finite element analysis program is proposed. The analytical study showed that the proposed method reduces the allowable soil pressure under foundation and the amount of reinforcement as well as concrete for foundation.
