We evaluated natural attenuation of petroleum hydrocarbons in a shallow aquifer using a modeling study. The studied shallow aquifer was severely contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, especially toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (i.e, TEX). The exact spill history was not known. Therefor we used a contaminant level in May 1999 (the first sampling date of our integrated study) as an initial contaminant concentration. we calibrated required transport parameters using the contamination levels obtained from groundwater analyses in September of 1999. For fate and transport of the petroleum contaminants, five case 2 with sorption and degradation. case 3 with sorption and degradation (half decay constant compared with case 2), case 4 with degradation but no sorption, and case 5 with sorption but no degradation. For sorption and degradation, a linear sorption isotherm and first order irreversible decay was assumed, respectively and no additional contamination source to groundwater is also assumed.

HydroSphere can simulate integrated surface and subsurface flow and transport. Using field experiments conducted at Canadian Forces Base Borden, in Ontario, Canada, by Abdul [1985], HydroSphere is evaluated to verify its capabilities for fully integrated surface and subsurface flow modeling. And a field scale simulation will be performed with HydroSphere, using rainfall and surface and subsurface hydrogen isotope analysis data measured at small basin, in Yu-sung, by Park et al. [2003], to verify its capabilities for fully integrated surface and subsurface flow and transport modeling.
The uplift response of symmetrical square anchor plates has been evaluated in physical model tests and numerical simulations using Plaxis. The behavior of square anchor plates during uplift test was studied by experimental data and finite element analyses in loose sand. Validation of the analysis model was also carried out with 50 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm Length square plates in loose sand. Agreement between the uplift responses from the physical model tests and finite element modeling using PLAXIS 2D, based on 100 mm computed maximum displacements was excellent for square anchor plates. Numerical analysis using square anchor plates was conducted based on the hardening soil model (HSM). The research has shown that the finite element results are higher than the experimental findings in loose sand.

This study aims to evaluate the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hourly hydrological modeling performance and compare it with daily SWAT modeling parameters. For the Byeolmicheon catchment ($1.17km^2$) located in the upstream of Gyeongancheon watershed and total 18 storm events measured during 3 years (2011-2013), the hourly SWAT was calibrated and validated using the Green and Ampt (G&A) infiltration equation. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) of hourly SWAT discharge were 0.81 and 0.73 respectively, and the most sensitive parameter was soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (SOL_K) and calibrated with the average value of 0.075 mm/hr. In addition, the hourly SWAT simulation by G&A was compared with the daily SWAT simulation by SCS-CN (Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number) method for the whole 3 years period. The houlrly G&A results showed $R^2$ and NSE of 0.71 and 0.50, and the daily SCS-CN results were 0.71 and 0.66, respectively. The SOL_K by daily SCS_CN method was calibrated at 75.5 mm/hr, 1,000 times greater than the hourly G&A method. The next sensitive parameters for the hourly simulation were lag time of lateral flow (LAT_TIME) and lag time of surface runoff (SURLAG).

The mobility of tracked vehicles is mainly influenced by the interaction between the tracks and soil. When the track of a tracked vehicle rotates, there will be a slip effect between the track and the soil, which creates a track shear force and the vehicle’s driving force. In this paper, the modeling of a working tool such as a trenching cutter and a tracked vehicle that is the lower frame of a track-based operating robot was performed. In addition, a numerical simulation was executed to verify the performance of the design objectives and the motion characteristics of the combined system.

This study is to assess the effect of non-point source pollution discharge loads between tillage and no-tillage applications for upland crop areas using SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) watershed modeling. For Byulmi-cheon small rural catchment ($1.17km^2$) located in upstream of Gyeongan-cheon watershed, the rainfall, discharge and stream water quality have been monitored in the catchment outlet since 2011. The SWAT model was calibrated and validated in hourly basis using 19 rainfall events during 2011-2013. The average Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency and $R^2$ (determination coefficient) for streamflow were 0.67 and 0.79 respectively. Using the 10 % surface runoff reduction from experiment results for no-tillage condition in field plots of 3 % and 8 % slopes under sesami cultivation, the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity for upland crop areas was adjusted from 0.001 mm/hr to 0.0025 mm/hr in average. Under the condition, the catchment sediment, T-N (total nitrogen, TN), and T-P (total phosphorus, TP) discharge loads were reduced by 6.9 %, 7.4 %, and 7.7 % respectively.

The Geumho river watershed located in the middle of the Nakdong river has been threatened by high population growth and urbanization. Of concern specifically is the potential impact of future developments in the watershed on the reduction of base flow and the consequent risk of degradation of ecological habitats in Geumho river. Anticipated increase in imperviousness, on the other hand, is expected to elevate flood risk and the associated environmental damage. A watershed hydrology based modeling study is initiated in this study to assist in planning for sustainable future development in the Geumho river watershed. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is selected to model the impact of urbanization in the Geumho river watershed on the hydrologic response thereof. The modeling results show that in general the likelihood that the watershed will experience high and low stream flows will increase in view of the urbanization so far achieved.
Intensive agricultural development in Mexicali valley, Baja-California, Mexico, has induced tremendous strain on the limited water resources. Agricultural water consumption in the valley mainly relies on diversions of the Colorado River, but their water supply is far less than the demand. Hence, the use of groundwater for irrigation purposes has gained considerable attention. To account for these changes, it is important to evaluate surface water and groundwater conditions based on historical water use. This study identified the effects of agricultural activities on groundwater levels and groundwater recharge in the Mexicali valley (in irrigation unit 16) by a comprehensive MODFLOW Farm process (MF-FMP) numerical modeling. The MF-FMP modeling results showed that the water table in the study area is drawn downed, more in eastern areas. The inflow-outflow analysis demonstrated that recharge to the aquifer occurs in response to agricultural supplies. In general, the model provides MF-FMP simulations of natural and anthropogenic components of the hydrologic cycle, the distribution and dynamics of supply and demand in the study area.

In this study a dynamic modeling scheme is presented to derive the probabilistic structure of soil water and plant water stress when subject to stochastic precipitation conditions. The newly developed model has the form of the Fokker-Planck equation, and its applicability as a model for the probabilistic evolution of the soil water and plant water stress is investigated under climate change scenarios. This model is based on the cumulant expansion theory, and has the advantage of providing the probabilistic solution in the form of probability distribution function (PDF), from which one can obtain the ensemble average behavior of the dynamics. The simulation result of soil water confirms that the proposed soil water model can properly reproduce the results obtained from observations, and it also proves that the soil water behaves with consistent cycle based on the precipitation pattern. The plant water stress simulation, also, shows two different PDF patterns according to the precipitation. Moreover, with all the simulation results with climate change scenarios, it can be concluded that the future soil water and plant water stress dynamics will differently behave with different climate change scenarios.
