This laboratory study was carried out in order to produce fundamental data for analyzing salt movement and desalinization effects, using samples of silt loam soil collected in Gyehwado and Daeho reclaimed tidelans, and samples of silty clay loam soil collected in Kimie tideland. Desalinization experiments with gypsum treatment were performed to analyze changes of the hydraulicc conductivity with changes of the soil property and the salt concentration during the desalinization of reclaimed tideland soils by leaching through the subsufface drainage, and correlations between factors infl uencing the reclamation of salt affected soils were analyzed by the statistical method. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The reclaimed tideland soils used in this study were saline-sodic soils with the high exchangeable sodium percentage and the high electrical conductivity. 2. Changes of the hydraulic conductivity with the amount of leaching water and the leaching time elapsed were affected by the amount of gypsum except exchangeable sodium and clay contents. The regression equation between the depth of water leached per unit depth of soil (Dw / Ds : X) or the square root of the leaching time elapsed (T $^1$$^2$ : X) and the relative hydraulic conductivity (HCr:Y) could be expressed in Y=a . bx. 3. The more exchangeable sodium and clay contents regardless of the amount of gypsum, the more the leaching time was required until a given volume of water was leached through the soil profile. The regression analysis showed that the relationship between the depth of water leached per unit depth of soil(Dw /Ds:X) and the square root of the leaching time elapsed(T$^1$$^2$ :Y) could be described by Y=a . Xb. 4. The hydraulic conductivity was influenced to a major degree by the salt concentration provided that the electrical conductivity was below 10 mmhos / cm during the desalinization of reclaimed tideland soils. The regression equation between the relative electrical conductivity ( ECr : X) and the relative hydraulic conductivity (HCr:Y) could be expressed in Y=a + b . X-$^1$. 5. In conclusion, the hydraulic conductivity, leaching requirements and the leaching time elapsed can be estimated when the salt concentration decreases to a certain level during the desalinization of reclaimed tidelands, and the results may be applied to the analysis of salt movement and desalinization effects.

Various leaching tests were applied to the soil affected by accidental leakage of HF in an industrial area in Korea. Three different leaching methods including pH-stat, continuous batch leaching, and column tests were adopted to assess leaching characteristics and mobility of fluorine(F) in soil and the potential risks to ecosystem. Both natural and spiked samples were used for the leaching tests. F concentrations in the batch tests increased by leaching rapidly in the early stage of leaching and then maintained rather constant levels. Column leaching test also show similar result to that of the batch test. pH also controlled the leaching behavior of the soil. With increasing pH, more F was released in the pH-stat test. This is mainly due to the competition and exchange with hydroxyl ions, as pH increase to the alkaline range. Most of the F released by the accident seem to have removed in the very early stage of leaching, whereas some natural proportion from soil minerals are thought to have been released very slowly. Therefore, little F released during the accident remained, based on the results of this study on the samples after two years of the accident. We could conclude that soil contaminated by external effects such as chemical accidents should be managed immediately, especially with F.
Arsenic is one of the most abundant contaminant found in waste mine tailings and soil around refinery, Because of its carcinogenic property, the countries like United States of America and Europe have made stringent regulations which govern the concentration of arsenic in soil. The study focuses on solidification/stabilization for removal of arsenic from soil. Cement was used to solidify/stabilize the abandoned soil primarily contaminated with arsenic (up to 68.92 mg/kg) in and around refinery. Solidified/stabilized (s/s) forms in the range of cement contents 5-30 wt % were evaluated to determine the optimal binder content. Revised Korean standard leaching tests (KSLT), toxicity characteristic leaching procedures (TCLP), Old Korea standard leaching test and revised Korea standard leaching test were used for chemical characterization of the S/S forms. The addition of 10 % cement remarkably reduced the leachability of arsenic in contaminated soil. The concentration of As in leachate of TCLP, KSLT, and old KSLT for soil are below the standard. However that in leachate of revised KSLT is above the standard. Because of extraction fluid used in revised KSLT is very strong acid. It is arsenic in s/s with binder should be exhaustingly leached. Therefore S/S process would not be available for As treatment in soil in Korea.
The influence of venting on the leaching characteristics of pure gasoline and gasoline contaminated soil was studied. The change of leaching characteristics by venting of contaminated soil column could be characterized by two distinct trends : 1) the leaching concentration in TPH-GRO rapidly decreased with evaporation until the evaporation loss became 75% of the original volume. Afterwards, it gradually decreased. 2) the leaching concentrations of individual components showed initial increase followed by gradual decrease. In general, the relative increase of leaching concentration and the venting time to reach the maximum increased with the molecular weight of the components. It should be noted that the decrease of gasoline concentration in the vented air occurs faster than that in the leaching solution. This indicates that, after removing most of the gasoline by evaporation, the focus of the risk assessment for the residual contaminants should be on the groundwater contamination rather than air pollution.
For a given soil-contaminated site, a level of soil contamination is characterized and decisions on risk may be made from the risk assessment. The study evaluated critical design factors for the determination of sample size in the sampling design plan and the assessment of soil contaminant- leaching to groundwater. Two variables, the minimum relative detectable difference (T) and coefficient of variation (CV) were evaluated for the sample size determination. The minimum number of samples can be appropriately determined by CV under a T value greater than or equal to 0.2. Soil-contaminant leaching to groundwater was evaluated by using the Soil Screening Level equation of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Risk Based Screening Level equation of American Society for Testing and Materials, with the same input parameters. The groundwater concentrations estimated from soil contaminant concentrations were significantly affected by the Darcy velocity of groundwater and the organic content of soil.
The decay rates of organic matter were investigated and the leaching rates were determined from the concentration distribution of N,P,K, Ca and Na in the soil profile at Pinus rigida stand on Mt. Gwan-ak and at Pseudosasa japonica stand on Odong-do. In order to determine the leaching rates θo/W wazs substituted with KL in Towner's equation. Decay rates were 0.191 at Pinus stand on Mt. Gwan-ak and 0.234 at Pseudosasa stan don Odong-do. Concentration distributions of N,P, K and Na in soil profiles were corresponed with Towner's model curve. Leaching rates determined from concentration distributions were 0.086, 0.079, 0.041, 0.029, 0.096 on Mt. Gwan-ak and 0.080, 0.056, 0.051, 0.008, 0.028 on Odong-do. The soil of Pseudosasa stand showed on the whole lower leaching rates than that of Pinus stand. The soil of Pseudosasa stand showing higher decay rate and lower leaching rates contained more concentration of each nutrient than that of Pinus stand.
The effectiveness of quicklime-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) in immobilizing lead (Pb) was assessed by performing semi-dynamic leaching tests (ANS16.1). In order to simulate landfill leaching conditions, the ANS 16.1 test was modified by using 0.014 N acetic acid (pH = 3.25) instead of distilled water. Artificial soil samples as well as field soil samples contaminated with Pb were tested. The effectiveness of quicklime treatment was evaluated by determining diffusion coefficients ($D_e$) and leachability indices (LX). A model developed by de Groot and van der Sloat was used to elucidate the controlling Pb leaching mechanisms. Overall, upon quicklime treatment Pb leachability was significantly reduced in a]l of the samples tested. The mean LX values were higher than 9 for an artificial soil sample containing 30% kaolinite treated with 10% quicklime and for a field soil sample treated with 10% quicklime, which suggests that S/S treated soils can be considered acceptable for "controlled utilization". Moreover, quicklime treatment was more effective in artificially contaminated soil with high kaolinite content (30%), indicating the amount of clay plays an important role in the success of the treatment. The controlling Pb leaching mechanism was found to be diffusion, in all quicklime treated samples.
These studies were carried out to investigate the effects of potassium salts on the changes of chemical properties in submerged soil. Rice plants were cultured in submerged soil using potassium salts. Obtained results were as follows. In the submerged soil cultured with rice plants the value of pH was higher in the potassium chloride plot than in the potassium sulfate plot. The leaching of cations such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and ammonium were higher in the potassium chloride plot than in the potassium sulfate plot. On the other hand, the leaching of phosphate ion was slightly higher in the potassium sulfate plot than in the potassium chloride plot. The leaching of iron was higher in the planted plot than in the non-planted plot, but that of silica was higher in the non-planted plot than in the planted plot. However, the leaching of iron and silica was not affected by potassium salts.

The adsorption and leaching of organophosphorus pesticide, EPN are investigated in Namwon soil(black volcanic soil), Aewol soil(very dark brown volcanic soil) and Mureung soil(dark brown nonvolcanic soil) sampled in Cheju Island. The organic matter of Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil is 19.8%, 6.2%, 2.4%, respectively. The cation exchange capacity of Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil is 24.8 meq/100g, 13.0 meq/100g, 9.5 meq/100g, respectively. The Freundlich constant, K value, is 89.4, 26.9 and 9.25 for Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil, respectively. The K value of Namwon soil with very high organic matter content and cation exchange capacity was the highest for Aewol soil and Mureung soil. The Freundlich constant, 1/n, show a high correlation with organic matter content, i.e., it is less than unity for organic matter rich soil of Namwon soil and greater than unity for organic matter poor soil of Mureung soil. The leaching of EPN is slower for Namwon soil with high K values, and faster for Mureung soil with low K values. The results of the study is demonstrated the potential of pollution for EPN have little leached into soil environment.
Amendment of multi-binders was employed for the immobilization of metal(loid)s in field-contaminated soils to reduce the leaching potential. The effect of different types of multi-binders (lime/diammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate/ladle slag and lime/ladle slag) on the solidification/stabilization of metal(loid)s (Pb, Zn, Cu and As) from the smelter soil and mine tailing soil were investigated. The amended soils were evaluated by measuring Toxicity Characterization Leaching Procedure (TCLP) leaching concentration of metal(loid)s. The results show that the leaching concentration of metal(loid)s decreased with the immobilization using multi-binders. In terms of TCLP extraction, the mixed binder was effective in the order of lime/ladle slag > diammonium phosphate/ladle slag > lime/diammonium phosphate. When the mixed binder amendment (0.15 g lime+0.15 g ladle slag for 1g smelter soil and 0.05 g lime+0.1 g ladle slag for 1 g mine tailing soil, respectively) was used, the leaching concentration of metal(loid)s decreased by 90%. However, As leaching concentration increased with diammonium phosphate/lime and diammonium phosphate/ladle slag amendment competitive anion exchange between arsenic ion and phosphate ion from diammonium phosphate. The Standard, Measurements and Testing programme (SM&T) analysis indicated that fraction 1 (F1, exchangeable fraction) decreased, while fraction 4 (F4, residual fraction) increased. The increased immobilization efficiency was attributed to the increase in the F4 of the SM&T extraction. From this work, it was possible to suggest that both arsenic and heavy metals can be simultaneously immobilized by the amendment of multi-binder such as lime/ladle slag.
