  • Polymeric substances in organic matter of soils aggregate soil particles into a crumb structure which greatly influences such properties as water movement, aeration and heat transfer. Poorly-structured soils may be improved by the incorporation of synthetic polymers where the main objects are : promoting germination or establishing crops, improving drainage, combating wind and water erosion, and reducing evaporation from the surface of soil under arid condition.

  • To purpose of this research is to develop the numerical model for simulating performance of ground heat exchanger with high prediction accuracy. This paper describes the development of a numerical model that simulates the heat transfer between ground and circulation water in ground heat exchanger. Furthermore, we propose the estimating technique of soil properties, such as thermal conductivity, heat capacity and hydraulic conductivity, based on ground investigation. Comparison between experiment and numerical analysis based on the model developed above was conducted under the condition of the experiment in 2004. The result of analysis agreed well with the experimental result.

  • To describe a mathematical heat transfer model in saturated paddy soils, an analytical solution of the heat flow equation incorporated with the heat transfer by mass flow of water was obtained under the assumptions: 1) the diurnal (or annual) changes in temperature at a depth follow harmonic curves, 2) the temperature at the infinite depth be constant and 3) the temperatures of soil and water at the one depth be identical. The calculation of thermal diffusivities of the soil is possible with the known values of the physical parameters of each component in the soil matrix (heat capacity, density and porosity), percolation rate and the minimum and maximum temperatures at two different depths. The calculated thermal diffusivities using the solution were $9.5cm^2/hr$ for the loam soil with the percolation rate of 0.88cm/day and $13.9cm^2/hr$ for the sandy loam soil with the percolation rate of 2.64 cm/day.

  • A one-dimensional heat transfer model coupled with parameter estimation is developed in this study to predict the effective thermal conductivities of soil formation and borehole resistances from in situ field test data. In this application a new method of using initial ignoring time(IIT) obtained from error estimation is tried and turned out to be successful in determining soil thermal conductivities. The validity of this model is accomplished through comparison of the predicted temperature profiles of the model with the data from laboratory scale experimental setting. Eleven test boreholes were constructed in Ochang, Chungcheong Buk Do, and thermal response test was carried out with each borehole. The results of the in situ tests were analyzed with our 1-D numerical model and compared with the results of line source method. The comparison shows that the thermal properties from line source method is a little lower (${\sim}95%$)than those from numerical method. The reason of such result seems to be the lower thermal conductivity of grout material, which is not counted in line source method.

  • Backfill material with thermal resistivity which has $50^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt in wet and $100^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt in dry is requested to improve the power transfer capability for dissipation of heat production in underground power cables. In the field test performed by buried cable backfills, the backfill material developed from this study is compared with river sand and weathered soil (native soil) to investigate the effect of heat transfer in various seasons and locations of thermal sensors. As a result, the developed backfill material is faster approaching yielding temperature (critical heat) than that of river sand and weathered soil, and it has good dissipation capacity rather than other materials by keeping moisture content at dry season.

  • The study was focused on the development of computational scheme in three dimensional configurations by applying effective heat capacity model to the numerical procedure in order to predict the temperature profiles of a buried pipeline and the frozen penetration depth(FPD) of a freezing soil medium. To realize this, the investigator conducted the unsteady state heat transfer analysis, using the commercial code ABAQUS, for the freezing granite soil medium including a pipeline in a closed system. The proposed model took into consideration the phase change effect of in situ pore water in the frozen fringe. The comparison of results obtained by the proposed model and the actual performances was valuable in establishing a level of confidence in the application of introduced theory.

  • This paper presents how to analyze heat transfer characteristics of double-layered soils. Thermal response tests were conducted to measure the ground thermal conductivities of Joomunjin sand and double layered soils filled in a steel box of which the size is $5m{\times}1m{\times}1m$. Double-layered soils were composed of Joomunjin sand and Kaoline clay. Each thermal conductivity of Joomunjin sand and Kaloine clay was measured by using Heat Flow Meter considering different void ratio. The ground thermal conductivity of double-layered soils was 15% smaller than that of Joomunjin sand.

  • Numerical analysis was applied to a simplified two-dimensional Ondol heating model which consists of heating space on the top of it along with radiant and convective heating floor panel, flue channel in the midway and rectangular underground soil region at the bottom. These three components constitute a system thermally coupled at the top and bottom interfaces of the flue channel. Investigated in the present paper are effects with variations of the Reynolds numbers of 100, 200, and 300, Grashof numbers of $0.1{\times}10^6$ and $0.3{\times}10^6$ and aspect ratios of 15 and 20 on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of two-dimensional Ondol heating model by computer simulation.
