Decision of available soil depth based on soil physical and hydraulic properties for the $3^{rd}$ Landscape Vegetation Project in the Incheon International Airport was attempted. The soil samples were collected from the 8 sites at different depths, 0-20 and 20-60cm, for the three project fields, A, B, and C area. Physical and chemical properties including particle size distribution, organic matter content and electrical conductivity were analyzed. Hydrological properties including bulk density and water holding capacity at different water potential, -6 kPa, -10 kPa, -33 kPa, and -1500 kPa were calculated by SPAW model of Saxton and Rawls (2006), and air entry value was calculated by Campbell model (1985). Based on physical and hydrological limitation, feasibility and design criteria of soil depth for vegetation and landfill were recommended. Since the soil salinity of the soil in area A area was $19.18dS\;m^{-1}$ in top soil and $22.27dS\;m^{-1}$ in deep soil, respectively, landscape vegetation without amendment would not be possible on this area. Available soil depth required for vegetation was 2.51 m that would secure root zone water holding capacity, capillary fringe, and porosity. Available soil depth required for landscape vegetation of the B area soil was 1.51 m including capillary fringe 0.14 m and available depth for 10% porosity 1.35 m. The soils in this area were feasible for landscape vegetation. The soil in area C was feasible for bottom fill purpose only due to low water holding capacity.
Soil properties and yields of liriopis platyphylla were investigated to establish soil suitability of Korean liriopis platyphylla at 116 farms in Korea. Morphological and physical properties of the soils were investigated along with the average yield of 2~3 years. The impact factors of soil properties to the yield of liriopis platyphylla were selected based on standard error of each factor. The yields of liriopis platyphylla showed the greatest values when the morphology was alluvial plains, when the drainage was well or moderately well, when the slope was 0-2%, the texture was coarse loamy, when the gravel content was less than 15% and when the available soil depth was more than 100 cm. Contribution factors of soil properties to the yields were 0.15 by morphology, 0.15 by drainage level, 0.13 by slope, 0.18 by texture, 0.16 by gravel content and 0.23 by available soil depth, respectively. Soil suitability classes were set as follows; the best suitable land if score was greater than 92, suitable land if score ranged from 91 to 86, the possible land if the score ranged from 85 to 83, and low productive land if score was less than 82. According to the criteria, 17.8% of the production area was the best suitable land, 43.1% was suitable land, 17.3% was possible land, and 21.8% was low productive land. The sum of both the best and suitable lands were 60.9% of the farm area of Miryang in Gyeongsangnam-do.
This study was conducted to investigate the influences of sapflow flux on soil water tensions and soil moisture content at the Abies holophylla plots in Gwangneung, Gyeonggido, from September to October 2004. The Abies holophylla had been planted in 1976 and thinning and pruning were carried out in 1996 and 2004. Sapflow flux was measured by the heat pulse method, and soil water tension was measured by tensiometer at hillslope and streamside. Time domain reflectometry probes (TDR) were positioned horizontally at the depth of 10, 30 and 50 cm to measure soil moisture content. All of data were recorded every 30 minutes with the dataloggers. The sapflow flux responded sensitively to rainfall, so little sapflow was detected in rainy days. The average daily sapflow flux of sample trees was 10.16l, a maximum was 15.09l, and a minimum was 0.0l. The sapflow flux's diurnal changes showed that sapflow flux increased from 9 am and up to 0.74 l/30 min. The highest sapflow flux maintained by 3 pm and decreased almost 0.0 l/30 mm after 7 pm. The average soil water tensions were low ($-141.3cmH_2O$, $-52.9cmH_2O$ and $-134.2cmH_2O$) at hillslope and high ($-6.1cmH_2O$, $-18.0cmH_2O$ and $-3.7cmH_2O$) at streamside. When the soil moisture content decreased after rainfall, the soil water tension at hillslope responded sensitively to the sapflow flux. The soil water tension decreased as the sapflow flux increased during the day time, whereas increased during the night time when the sapflow flux was not detected. On the other hand, there was no significant relationship between soil water tension and sapflow flux at streamside. Soil moisture content at hillslope decreased continuously after rain, and showed a negative correlation to sapflow flux like a soil water tension at hillslope. As considered results above, it was confirmed that the response of soil moisture tension to sapflow flux at hillslope and streamside were different.
Soil properties and yields of red been were investigated to establish soil suitability of Korean adzuki bean at 166 farms in Korea. The soil morphological and physical properties were investigated by 1:5,000 scale average yield of 2~3 years. The impact factors to the adzuki bean yields and soil properties were selected based on standard error of each factor. The yields of adzuki bean showed the greatest values when the morphology was alluvial plains, the drainage was well or moderately well, the slope was 2~7%, the texture was fine loamy, the gravel content was less than 15% and the available soil depth was more than 100 cm. Contribution factors of soil properties to the yields were 0.18 of morphology, 0.18 of drainage level, 0.23 of slope, 0.20 of texture, 0.11 of gravel content and 0.10 of available soil depth, respectively. Soil suitability levels were set as the best suitable land if score was greater than 90, suitable land if score ranged from 89 to 85, the possible land if the score ranged from 79 to 84 and low productive land if score was less than 78. According to the criteria 37.5% of the production area was the best suitable land, 29.4% was suitable land, 22.3% was possible land and 10.8% was low productive land. The best and suitable lands were total of 66.9% in Gyeongju, Gyeosangbuk-do.
This study was conducted to measure the changes in the geological and soil properties following slow-moving landslide events in Yangbuk-myun and Gyungju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. The geological characteristics of the study site comprised black shale in the Gyeongsang nodal group formed in the Cretaceous period and quartz feldspar carcinoma in the east side with conglomerate in the Yeonil group formed in the Quaternary period. The study site exhibited the geologic characteristics of a slow-moving landslide with severely weathered rocks. The maximum collapsing depth of the slow-moving landslide was 12.0 m with colluvial deposits. The strike and joint aspects in the slope areas of the slow-moving landslides were $N46^{\circ}E$ in lower slope and $N62^{\circ}E$ in upper slope, respectively. Soil hardness of ${\leq}20cm$ deep was not measured because of the completely disturbed soil resulting from soil creeping. Soil from 25 to 90 cm deep was 1.4-4.7 times softer in the slow-moving landslide areas than in the undisturbed or natural forests. Soil bulk density was $1.24-1.29g/cm^3$ in land creep areas. Soil bulk in both areas was 1.6 times denser than that in the natural forest. The soil pore space was 51.5-53.3% in the land creep areas. The values are 1.3-1.4 times lower than those within the natural forest. Black shale areas showed the lowest coefficient of permeability (8.75 E-06 cm/s) and mesopore ratio (pF 2.7: 9.8%) compared with those resulting from other study areas.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of environmental factors affecting emergence and control of Sagittaria pygmaea Miquel in greenhouse. Emergence of S. pygmaea delayed as the amount of rice straw increased. When the tuber was sowned at 5 to 7㎝ soil depth the emergence of S. pygmaea delayed more in the hard condition of soil than that of the soft condition the large size tuber of S. pygmaea showed less control rate than the small size one at the rate of 2 to 3㎏ prod/10a of butachlor-naproanilide mixtures. The tubers of S. pygmaea seeded at the deeper soil depth decreased weeding efficicy of this mixture. Butachlor-naproanilide mikture showed higher weeding effects at the high temperature and at 2 to 4cm depths of water management than those of the low temperature and at 0cm and 6cm water depths. Weed control rate increased as the rate of butachlor-naproanilide mixture increased. The rate of 4㎏ (prod.)/10a showed good weed effect regardless of application times till 7.5 leaf stage of S. pygmaea. Tuber production of S. pygmea increased as the application time of mixture delayed.
Geomorphological properties for the phylite-derived soil were examined to relate processes to four landscape positions, shoulder, backslope, footslope, and toeslope in Chungbuk. The distribution of Ogcheon-geology system was 216 thousand ha in South Korea. 2 orders, 3 suborders, 4 great groups, 5 subgroups, and 9 series were mapped. Soil color was interlocked by landscape. Soil color index values and $Fe_2O_3$ contents increased with soil-drainge class. Silt/clay and Ca/Mg ratios tended to narrow wish elevation and decreased with depth. Therefore, profile development or age on the landscape position was shoulder>backslope>footslope>toeslope. Color index(C2m) has a sighificant correlation with $Fe_2O_3$, in soil profile($r=0.777^{**}$). Pedologic type was continuity/discontinuity and soil property changes of depth<12cm would have a continous function.
In recent years dry direct-seeding of rice has been encouraged by the government and increasingly practiced by farmers in Korea. This has been bringing up an increased occurrence of weedy rites. Some farmers in the southern region dare to sow the rice before winter after harvest, while most farmers wish to sow as early as possible in the spring to secure the growing period, and to disperse the intensive labor in early May. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of moving the sowing of rice to an earlier date under dry direct-seeding, and to elucidate the nature of emergence of an old strain of rice, weedy rites, and barnyardgrasses tinder this farming practice and their adaptive competence over present cultivate. The presently recommended rice cultivar, Dongjinbyo and an old rice strain, Dadajo which prevailed in early 1900s, almost could not emerge from soil deeper than 6cm and could emerge to only 5.3% at best from 1cm deep loamy soil field when the seeds were sown on Nov. 28. However, two strains of weedy rites being weedy for over 200 years emerged by 17.0 to 63.0% from the loamy and sandy clay loam field 1 to 6cm deep. Emergence of the weedy rites was greater in the loamy soil and at a shallow depth, and negligible from the soil depth of 9cm. Barnyardgrasses sown on Nov. 28 emerged by 13.4 to 51 % from the 1 to 3cm deep loamy soil, and 8.6 to 46.7% from the 1cm deep sandy clay loam. Echinochloa crus-galli var. crus-galli emerged more than var. praticola, and var. oryzicola least. Most of the non-emerged barnyardgrasses seem to have entered secondary dormancy. Seeding rice a month earlier than the season lowered the emergence of Dongjinbyo by ca. 10, 18, and 26%, respectively at 1, 3, and 6cm soil depths, indicating that moving the seeding date a month earlier is impractical. The old strain, Dadajo sown in the soil at a depth of 6cm responded similarly. However, the strain has shown a significantly higher ability in emergence from 9cm deep soil. Weedy rices sown a month earlier A month earlier sown weedy rices have shown very similar emergence rates at various soil depths to those sown on May 1. Barnyardgrasses have also shown similar emergence rates when sown between April 3 and May 1. Like barnyardgrasses, the old strain and weedy rices apparantly posessed a greater adaptability to emerge under lower temperatures, and from deeper soil ; Dongjinbyo${\leq}$ Echinochloa species in that order. Climate models forecast more frequent and a longer period of drought events which may impact forest soil carbon dynamics, thereby altering the soil respiration (SR) rate. We examine the simulated drought effects on soil $CO_2$ effluxes from soil surface partitioning heterotrophic and autotrophic soil respiration sources. Three replicates of drought plots ($6{\times}6m$) were constructed with the same size of three control plots. We examined the relation between $CO_2$ and soil temperature and soil moisture, each being measured at a soil depth of 15 cm. We also compared which factor affected $CO_2$ efflux more under drought conditions. Total SR, autotrophic respiration (AR) and heterotrophic respiration (HR) were positively correlated with soil temperature (p < 0.05), and the relationships were stronger in roof plots than in control plots. Total SR, AR, and HR were negatively correlated only in roof plots, and the only HR showed a significant correlation (p < 0.05, r = -0.59). Soil respiration rates were more influenced by soil temperature than by soil moisture, and this relationship was more evident under drought conditions.
In order to obtain basic information on soil inprovement and management of two reclaimed paddy soils, Munpo and Pori series, this study was carried out by investigating the change of physico-chemical and soil mechanical properties. 1. In the Munpo series, the contents of salt in the soil and ground water before paddy rice transplanting at 6 years after reclamation were 0.60 and 1.84%, respectively, and the safty cultivation of paddy rice was possible after 20 years, while that of the Pori series was after 12 years. 2. In the Munpo series, the change of the soil particle size according to the ages after reclamation showed negative correlation with sandy contents, but clay contents had positive correlation both in the surface and subsurface soils. The pori series showed reverse tendency. 3. Between the N-value and Atterberg limits and the ages showed negative correlation in both Munpo and Pori series, but clay-activity showed positive. Arid the cole values showed positive correlation in the Munpo series, but negative in the Pori series. 4. Cone penetrating resistance in the surface of the Munpo series after 6 years of reclamation was 62.9, after 20 years 24.5 and $16.7kg/cm^2$ in 15cm of soil depth at depth of 22.5cm after 27 years. In the Pori series, it was $3kg/cm^2$ at 15-20cm of soil depth after 12 years and it used after being creation of hard pan layer after 23 years. 5. Change of the clay minerals by the different year after accomplishment of tidal reclamation did not show. The major clay minerals were illite and kaolinite, and accessory clay minerals were montmorillonite and vermiculite in both Munpo and Pori series.
