Hydrothermal Reaction (HTR) was applied for the stabilization of contaminated soil with heavy metals, and then the test determined the optimal conditions for HTR. After HTR, the concentration of heavy metals in the contaminated soil increased. However, it was observed that the leachability potential significantly decreased as determined by TCLP and SPLP tests. This decrease was attributed to a decline in fractions 1-2 and an increase in fractions 3-4 as revealed by sequential extraction procedure. Due to the mineralogical characteristics of the dredged soil, distinct changes were not evident in the five-stage fraction. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to understand the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the target soil for HTR application in order to selectively address contaminants. Comparison among operating conditions determined the optimal condition to be at 240℃ for one hour.
Concentration change of soil-applied pretilachlor (2-chloro-2',6'-diethyl- N-2-propoxyethyl)-actanilide) was investigated under upland condition with various soil moisture contents ranging from 50 to 80%(water content by weight). Following pretilachlor from each soil solution was extracted by centrifugation using double tubes, its concentration was determined by HPLC. Pretilachlor concentration in the soil solutions were almost the same under various soil moisture conditions. However, the total amount of pretilachlor increased as the soil moisture content increased. With increasing soil moisture content, the bioactivity of soil-applied pretilachlor on inhibiting the growth of Echinochloa ultilis Ohwi et Yabuno and the absorption of $^{14}C$-pretilachlor in its plants were also enhanced. Our results demonstrate that the absorption of pretilachlor in plants varies with soil moisture content and thus the bioactivity of soil-applied pretilachlor on inhibiting plant growth is different under various soil moisture conditions at the same dosage based on air-dried weight.
This study assessed the possible role of different traits in selected plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for improving wheat growth and yield under natural conditions. Rhizobacteria exhibiting 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC)-deaminase activity were isolated and screened for their growth-promoting activity in wheat under axenic conditions. Five isolates belonging to Pseudomonas and one Burkholderia caryophylli isolate that showed promising performances under axenic conditions were selected and characterized for in vitro ACC-deaminase activity, chitinase activity, auxin production, P solubilization, and root colonization. These isolates were then used as inocula for wheat cultivated under natural conditions in pot and/or field trials. Significant increases in root elongation, root weight, tillers per pot, 1,000-grain weight, and grain and straw yields were observed in response to inoculation with PGPR in the pot trials. Inoculation with these PGPR was also effective under field conditions and increased the wheat growth and yield significantly. However, the efficacy of the strains was inconsistent under the axenic, pot, and field conditions. Pseudomonas fluorescens ($ACC_{50}$), which exhibited a relatively high in vitro ACC-deaminase activity, chitinase activity, auxin production, and P solubilization and more intensive root colonization, was the most efficient isolate under the field conditions. Therefore, these results demonstrated that ACC-deaminase activity is an efficient parameter for the selection of promising PGPR under axenic conditions. However, additional traits of PGPR, including auxin production, chitinase activity, P solubilization, and root colonization, are also important for selecting PGPR as biofertilizers.

Recently pipe-framed greenhouses are widely constructed on domestic farm area. These greenhouses are extremely light-weighted structures and so are easily damaged under strong wind due to the lack of uplift resistance of foundation piles. This experiment was carried out by laboratory soil tank to investigate the displacement be haviors of cylindrical pile foundations according to the uplift loads. Tested soils were sampled from two different greenhouse areas. The treatment for each soil type are consisted of 3 different soil moisture conditions, 2 different soil depths, and 3 different soil compaction ratios. Each test was designed to be repeated 2 times and additional tests were carried out when needed. The results are summarized as follows : 1. When the soil moisture content are low and/or pile foundations are buried relatively shallow, ultimate uplift capacity of foundation soil was generated just after begining of uplift displacement. But under the high moisture conditions and/or deeply buried depth, ultimate up-lift capacity of foundation soil was generated before the begining of uplift displacement. 2. For the case of soil S$_1$, the ultimate uplift capacity of piles depending on moisture contents was found to be highest in optimum moisture condition and in the order of air dryed and saturated moisture contents. But for the case of soil S$_2$, the ultimate uplift capacity was found to be highest in optimum moisture condition and in the order of saturated and air dryed moisture contents. 3. Ultimate uplift capacities are varied depending on the pile foundation soil moisture conditions. Under the conditions of optimum soil moisture contents with 60cm soil depth, the ultimate uplift capacity of pile foundation in compaction ratio of 80%, 85%, and 90% for soil 51 are 76kg, 115kg, and 155kg, respectively, and for soil S$_2$are 36kg, 60kg, and 92kg, respectively. But considering that typical greenhouse uplift failure be occurred under saturnted soil moisture content which prevails during high wind storm accompanying heavy rain, pile foundation is required to be designed under the soil condition of saturated moisture content. 4. Approximated safe wind velosities estimated for soil sample S$_1$and S$_2$are 32.92m/s and 26.58m/s respectively under the optimum soil condition of 90% compaction ratio and optimum moisture content. But considering the uplift failure pattern under saturated moisture contents which are typical situations of high wind accompanying heavy rain, the safe wind velosities for soil sample S$_1$and S$_2$are not any higher than 20.33m/s and 22.69m/s respectively.

Recently the roof gardening has become very popular and even on the apartment-veranda and on the roofs in high buildings many kinds of vegetables and berries are cultivated. And the demand of the nutritional supplement for the effective plant growth is also increasing. The general urban conditions are to be adapted for plant growth. A different hygroscopic and temperature-conditions after regions, sunshine and wind have strong influences on the plant growth and usually it is not optimal enough. It is because why a nutritional condition in soil for plant growth so important and essential. The usual compound-soil or -fertilizer cannot offer enough quantities of nutrients for plant growth and additional soil conditioner becomes more necessary. There are many kinds of soil conditioners like hydrogel in the market and we studied on Geohumus, Montigel and Geko, which are widely used in Europe and other countries. Water absorption and microbial immobilization with effective microorganisms were tested and compared. The EM solution was identified as bacteria, fungi and azotobacter etc. and they were immobilized at the soil conditioners at first. And the cultivated and immobilized at the soil conditioners EM-solution was added to the plant soil. 1 g of the soil conditioners absorbed ca. 20 g of water. The plant grew 10 cm more, got 3 times more branches and 2 times more fruits in the soil with soil conditioners immobilized with microorganisms. With water addition the plant with both conditions in the soil could stay fresh in comparison to without soil conditioners.
Climate models forecast more frequent and a longer period of drought events which may impact forest soil carbon dynamics, thereby altering the soil respiration (SR) rate. We examine the simulated drought effects on soil $CO_2$ effluxes from soil surface partitioning heterotrophic and autotrophic soil respiration sources. Three replicates of drought plots ($6{\times}6m$) were constructed with the same size of three control plots. We examined the relation between $CO_2$ and soil temperature and soil moisture, each being measured at a soil depth of 15 cm. We also compared which factor affected $CO_2$ efflux more under drought conditions. Total SR, autotrophic respiration (AR) and heterotrophic respiration (HR) were positively correlated with soil temperature (p < 0.05), and the relationships were stronger in roof plots than in control plots. Total SR, AR, and HR were negatively correlated only in roof plots, and the only HR showed a significant correlation (p < 0.05, r = -0.59). Soil respiration rates were more influenced by soil temperature than by soil moisture, and this relationship was more evident under drought conditions.

To estimate the effects of lime and cement on the surplus soil, the engineering properties of the marine deposited clay and the fresh water clay were analyzed. The specimen were prepared under several curing conditions, namely, underwater curing, wet condition curing and underwater curing after heating. Unconfined compression strength were estimated after 7, 14, 28 and 60 days, respectively. The strength were steeply increased with time until first 14 days. Specially the increase of the strength of the heated soil were large.
Q. mongolica and Q. dentata are representative species of deciduous forest communities in Korea and are known to be relatively resistant to soil drying condition among Korean oaks. This study attempted to elucidate the degree of competition and ecological niche characteristics of the two species by comparing the ecological responses of the two species according to soil moisture. Competition between Q. mongolica and Q. dentata was shown to be more intense under the conditions where moisture content was low than under the conditions where moisture content was high. As for the ecological niche overlaps of the two species for soil moisture, the structural traits of plant such as stem diameter overlapped the most, the traits of biomass such as petiole weight overlapped the least, and photosynthetic organ-related traits such as leaf width and length overlapped intermediately. When looking at the competition for soil moisture between the two species, it can be seen that Q. mongolica won in nine traits (leaf width length, leaf lamina length, leaf lamina weight, leaf petiole weight, leaf area, leaves weight, shoot weight, root weight, and plant weight) and Q. dentata won in the remaining seven traits (leaf petiole length, leaves number, stem length, stem diameter, stem weight, shoot length, and root length). Competition between the two species for the moisture environment of the soil was shown to be intense under the conditions where moisture content was low. The degree of competition between Q. dentata and Q. mongolica for soil moisture is high under the conditions where soil moisture content is low, and it is judged that Q. mongolica is more competitive for soil moisture than Q. dentata.

To estimate the effect of rainfall on soil respiration, soil $CO_2$ efflux was measured with a manipulation of rainfall interception at a broad-leaved deciduous forest in western Japan from 20 February to 19 November 2001. The diurnal patterns of soil respiration observed at the intercepted subplot ($F_c$) were quite similar to those of soil temperature at 0.2 m depth with a maximum around midnight and a minimum from noon to early afternoon. Such diurnal patterns have not been observed in the previous studies at the same study site under natural conditions (which manifested no clear diurnal variations). Furthermore, the magnitudes of $F_c$ showed substantial differences (e.g., ~50% reduction under water-limited conditions) compared to those of the potential soil respiration under natural conditions ($F_{cal}$). These findings demonstrate that rainfall events not only affected the magnitude of soil $CO_2$ efflux but also modified the vertical structure of soil temperature, thereby altering diurnal patterns of soil respiration.
A sensitivity analysis about effects of influencing factors on the stability of Soil cut slope was performed. Slope stability analyses were carried out under dry, rainy and seismic conditions. Dominant factors controlling the slope stability were chosen such as cohesion and internal friction angle, unit weight of soil, water table and seismic horizontal coefficient used for the slope stability during earthquake. Parametric stability analysis with those factors was performed for sensitivity analysis. As results of analyzing the sensitivity of factors under dry and rainy conditions, effects of cohesion, internal friction angle and unit weight of soil on the stability of slope are more critical in the dry condition than in the rainy condition. Cohesion and internal friction angle are more dominant factors influencing the slope stability irrespective of dry or rainy conditions than unit weight of soil and the horizontal seismic coefficient. The unit weight and the horizontal seismic coefficient affects crucially the stability according to conditions of slope formation and dry or rainy seasons. For the effect of horizontal seismic coefficient on stability of slope, safety factor of slope is not affected significantly by dry or rainy conditions. However, increase of the horizontal seismic coefficient under the rainy condition floes reduce the safety factor significantly rather than the dry condition. Therefore, it is needed that the location of the water table is assigned appropriately to satisfy the required safety factor of stability in the case of checking slope stability for the rainy and seismic conditions.
