A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the transfer of As and cationic heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd and Pb) from soil to rice plant in soil condition with submerged and drained. During the ninety-day monitoring period for soil solution, solubility of reducible elements such as As, Fe and Mn in submerged condition were higher than that of Zn. On the contrary, concentration of Zn in drained condition was higher than that of reducible elements. The concentration of As, Cd, Pb and Zn in rice plant (root, stem, leaf and grain) showed similar pattern with soil solution. The As concentration in each part of rice plant, which cultivated in drained condition, measured 56%~94% lower than those in submerged condition. However, the contents of cationic heavy metals (Cd, Pb and Zn) were represented the opposite result with As. These results are due to mobility of As and cationic heavy metals under different soil drainage conditions which represent oxidation and reduction. Thus soil drainage control can be used as acceptable passive treatment methods to reduce transfer of inorganic contaminants from soil to rice plant. However more detailed examination on soil condition conversion is needed, because yield of rice was decreased when it cultivated in drained condition only. It also needed when soil is contaminated by As and cationic heavy metal because single drainage condition cannot reduce transfer of both kinds of contaminants all.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of soil depth and planting density on the growth of lettuce, crown daisy, and strawberry on a rooftop condition using artificial soil as a growth media. The vegetable crops showed better growth for plant height (cm), plant width (cm), plant fresh weight (g), and Fo, Fm and Fv/m on 20cm depth soil than 10cm depth soil except strawberry. Planting density of $16/m^2$ and $64/m^2$ did not show significant differences on the growth of the crops. Soil moisture content and EC were low for 10cm depth soil in lettuce plots, whereas there was no significant differences on soil moisture and EC between two soil depth in strawberry plots. Hunter's L, a, and b values showed the leaf color of lettuce dark green on 20cm depth soil and reddish on 10cm depth soil. Results showed that soil depth suitable for crop growth on rooftop conditions was 20cm rather than 10cm. Growth response of the crops showed no significant difference between $16/m^2$ and $64/m^2$, indicating that planting density of 64 $plants/m^2$ could be practiced on rooftop conditions. Lettuce growth rapidly changed in control treatment in which leaves were not pinched out, while slowly changed in plants which leaves were periodically pinched out. In the case of control plot, it was impossible to harvest because withering of lower leaves after blossom on June 22. The plant of crown daisy in which pinching was not conducted, blossomed on June 7, and the plants were removed since its aesthetical value was lost. Strawberry seemed to be a suitable vegetable crop for rooftop conditions based on its high covering rate and extended growth period until late October. The soil depth 20cm and planting density 64 $plants/m^2$ were suitable for vegetable crops on green roof system using artificial soil.
In order to establish the fertilization and soil management method in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land, we investigated soil property and actual farming condition. Soil properties of 100 field paddy soil and farming surveys of 177 farm households were conducted. Average of effective soil depth was 17.8 cm, which was very smaller than the optimum level 50 cm. The hardness and bulk density of subsoil were $12.40kg\;cm^{-2}$ and $1.59g\;cm^{-3}$, respectively. These results showed that soil physical condition of Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land was very poor. Soil salinity ranged from 0.03 to 0.12%, and average of pH was 6.0, which implied that desalinization of Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land was progressed. However, soil nutrients in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land were very unbalanced conditions as following, available phosphate $58mg\;kg^{-1}$, available silicate $85mg\;kg^{-1}$, cation exchangeable capacity $7.4cmolc\;kg^{-1}$ and organic matter $8.6g\;kg^{-1}$. On the farm household in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land, fertilization amounts were $200-54-61(N-P_2O_5-K_2O)kg\;ha^{-1}$ They mainly practiced spring tillage(84%) rather than autumn tillage(16%), and only 14% of them applied rice straw annually in the paddy soil.

Recent advances in remote sensing techniques provide the potential for monitoring soil color as well as soil moisture conditions at the spatial and temporal scales required for detailed local modeling efforts. Soil moisture as well as soil color is a key feature used in the identification and classification of soils. Soil spectral reflectance has a direct relationship with soil color, as well as to other parameters such as soil moisture, soil texture. and organic matter. We evaluate the influence of seven soil properties, soil color and soil moisture, on soil spectral reflectance. This paper presents the results obtained from the ground-truth spectral reflectance measurements in the 300-1100 nm wavelength range for various land surfaces. The results suggest that the reflectance properties of soils are related to soil color, soil texture, and soil moisture. Increasing soil moisture content generally decreases soil reflectance which leads to parallel curves of soil reflectance spectra across the entire shortwave spectrum. We discuss the relationships between the soil reflectance and the Munsell Soil Color Charts which contain standard color chips with colors specified by designations for hue, value, and chroma.
Tow Kinds of Soils, vertisol and alfisol, were selected and analyzed pore space distribution(PSD) by mercury intrusion method and soil water potential after freeze-drying from different water conditions, such as 0.033MPa, 1.5MPa and ovendry. The PSD values measured by mercury intrusion method were higher in large pores than the values from soil water potential. Also, there were big differences of PSD by the changes of the water content befor freeze-drying.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect on evapotranspiration and yield of soybean according to different soil water conditions, and to find the optimum time and amount for irrigation in soybean cultivation. The difference between potential evapotranspiration (PET) and maximum evapotranspiration (MET) during growing season of soybean planted in lysimeter was higher during reproductive stage than during vegetative one. The maximum crop coefficient was obtained at beginning seed stage of soybean. Soil water coefficient of irrigation treatment was higher than that of non-irrigation treatment during soybean growth stage in field experiment. Grain yield was highest in lysimeter due to its high water use efficiency and evapotranspiration rate.
We describe a method for effectively pretreating soil highly that has been contaminated with fluorene (${\gg}$ 120 mg/kg soil), i.e., we apply Fenton oxidation in which ethanol is added to increase fluorene removal. To obtain maximum fluorene removal efficiency, a minimum of 1.0 ml of ethanol, 0.35 ml of $H_2O_2$, and 0.2 ml of 0.5M $Fe^{2+}$ was needed per 1 g of fluorene-contaminated soil. Under optimal Fenton oxidation conditions, 13% of 9-fluorene was generated during Fenton oxidation of 43% fluorene. The biodegradability of 9-fluorenone was subsequently confirmed to be much more rapid than that of fluorene, i.e., biodegradability of 96% versus 35% over 31 days. These results demonstrate that the proposed treatment method can be effectively applied to remove fluorene prior to disposal at industrial waste sites.
This paper investigates the effects of micro-tunneling on buried pipelines parametrically. A simplified numerical approach was developed and various parametric studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of ground settlements on the response of buried pipelines. The controlled parameters included the pipe stiffness, ground loss magnitude, and pipe location with respect to a micro-tunnel. Maximum settlement and curvature along a pipeline have been investigated and compared among others for different conditions. In addition, the numerical results have been compared with a theoretical method by Attewell et al. (1986), which is based on a Winkler type linear-elastic solution. The comparison indicated that the response of buried pipes to micro-tunneling-induced ground settlements highly depends on the soil-pipe interaction including the separation and slippage of pipe from soil with the effects of the investigated parameters. Therefore, rather than using the theoretical method directly, it would be a better assessment of the response of buried pipelines to consider the soil-pipe interaction in more realistic conditions.
Current design and analyzing methods about soil nailing structures, developed on the basis of results obtained from experiments in laboratory or in field and numerical analyses, have applied different interaction mechanisms between the reinforced nails and the surrounding ground, and this different safety factors against failure have been obtained. They might be proper approached if the assumptions about rigidity of nails and ground conditions are met with actual conditions occurred in field. Otherwise, they would result in designing on analyzing in inappropriate ways so that it is needed to evaluate the validity of them. Therefore, overall behavior and failure mechanism about soil nailing system were investigated by performing numerical method. Using a finite element analysis, parametric studies were made to examine the importance of the various parameters and their effects on the soil nailing system. The numerical technique of FEM, implemented with Hyperbolic constitutive model, was also used to analyze the test results.
Laboratory experiments are performed for staple fibre -nonwoven geotextiles which have been widely used in Korea to investigate the filter characteristics of soil/geoteztile system under alternating flow conditions. It is experimentally examined the effects of various design factors such as alternating hydraulic gradient, alternating period, vertical load, gradation and density of foundation soil on the filter structure, vertical permeability and soil retention of soil/geoteztile systems. Based on the experimental results, alternating flow filtration criteria- retention criteria and permeability criteria-for staple fibre-nonwoven geotextiles made in Korea are suggested.
