In this study, a circular pipe can be installed by suction pressure for construction on soft ground with a low-water level. A series of laboratory-scale model tests were conducted in sandy ground to comprehend the suction pressure of the circular pipe in low-water levels. For repeated tests on saturated sandy soil, a container was mounted with three vibration generators on the floor. A repetitive vibration was applied using the vibration system for ground compaction. In the model tests, different diameters and thicknesses on saturated sandy soil with a water depth were considered. The result showed that the suction pressure increased with increasing penetration depth of the circular pipe. Moreover, the suction pressure required to penetrate the pipe decreased with increasing diameter. In the low-water level, the total suction pressure measured at the top lid increased because additional suction pressure is required to lift the water column. On the other hand, this led to a decrease in suction pressure to penetrate the circular pipe because the weight of the water column is applied as a dead load. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the water level to design the required suction pressure accurately.

Excessive rainfalls due to climatic changes can trigger an increase in rainfall-induced slope failures that pose real threats to both lives and properties. Many high slopes in residual soils could stand at a steep angle, but failed during or after rainfall. Commonly, these slopes have a deep groundwater table and negative pore-water pressures in the unsaturated zone above the groundwater table contribute to the shear strength of soil and consequently to factor of safety of the slope. Stability assessment of slope under rainfall requires information on rate of rainwater infiltration in the unsaturated zone and the resulting changes in pore-water pressure and shear strength of soil. This paper describes the application of unsaturated soil mechanics principles and theories in the assessment of rainfall effect on stability of slope through proper characterization of soil properties, measurement of negative pore-water pressures, seepage and slope stability analyses involving unsaturated and saturated soils. Factors controlling the rate of changes in factor of safety during rainfall and a preventive method to minimize infiltration are highlighted in this paper.
One-dimensional rainfall laboratory tests using gneissic weathered soil were conducted to investigate effect of antecedent rainfall on infiltration characteristics. Experimental results using samples from Chuncheon and Chungju sites showed that rainfall onto the ground surface decreased initial negative pore water pressure of unsaturated soils, which recovered gradually after the end of rainfall. Rainfall intensity increases water infiltration rate, and infiltration rate during main rainfall is faster than that of the preceding rainfall. It is considered that higher water saturation after antecedent rainfall increases water infiltration rate during main rainfall. In particular, Chungju sample with higher clay content had slower recovery of negative pore water pressure and infiltration rate. Numerical results using finite element slope stability analysis showed that reduction of initial negative pore pressure due to rainfall infiltration deteriorates slope stability, and diffusion of pore water pressure after the end of rainfall further reduces FS of the slope in the short term. Main rainfall after prior rainfall further reduced factor of safety of the unsaturated slope. Pattern of antecedent rainfall has a significant impact on the magnitude and distribution of initial pore water pressure in unsaturated soils which are controlling factor to assess factor of safety of unsaturated slope during rainfall.
Precipitation is one of a major causes of landslides by rising of pore water pressure, which leads to fluctuations of soil strength and stress. For this reason, precipitation is the most frequently used to determine the landslide thresholds. However, using only precipitation has limitations in predicting and estimating slope stability quantitatively for reducing false alarm events. On the other hand, Soil Moisture (SM) has been used for calculating slope stability in many studies since it is directly related to pore water pressure than precipitation. Therefore, this study attempted to evaluate the appropriateness of applying soil moisture in determining the landslide threshold. First, the reactivity of soil saturation level to precipitation was identified through time-series analysis. The precipitation threshold was calculated using daily precipitation (Pdaily) and the Antecedent Precipitation Index (API), and the hydrological threshold was calculated using daily precipitation and soil saturation level. Using a contingency table, these two thresholds were assessed qualitatively. In results, compared to Pdaily only threshold, Goesan showed an improvement of 75% (Pdaily + API) and 42% (Pdaily + SM) and Changsu showed an improvement of 33% (Pdaily + API) and 44% (Pdaily + SM), respectively. Both API and SM effectively enhanced the Critical Success Index (CSI) and reduced the False Alarm Rate (FAR). In the future, studies such as calculating rainfall intensity required to cause/trigger landslides through soil saturation level or estimating rainfall resistance according to the soil saturation level are expected to contribute to improving landslide prediction accuracy.
This paper concerns the finite element (FE) modeling approach for NATM tunneling in water bearing ground within the framework of stress-pore pressure coupled analysis. Fundamental interaction mechanism of ground and groundwater lowering was first examined and a number of influencing factors on the results of coupled FE analysis were identified. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as soil-water characteristics, location of hydraulic boundary conditions, the way of modeling drainage flow, among others. The results indicate that the soil-water characteristics play the most important role in the tunneling-induced settlement characteristics. Based on the results, modeling guidelines were suggested for stress-pore pressure coupled finite element modeling of NATM tunneling.

This paper describes the rainfall-induced slope failures caused by infiltration due to prolonged rainfall. The emphasis was on quantifying the effect of fine-grained contents which are influencing on the infiltration rate in the wetting front of initially unsaturated slopes during rainfall. Suction tests by tensiometer were performed for five mixture specimens with varying fine-grained contents and then, numerical analyses for the stability of unsaturated slopes are carried out for different relative densities and mixture portions based on the soil water characteristic curves obtained by GCTS pressure plate. It is shown that the fines are highly influenced on wetting front suction of unsaturated soil slopes. Based on the results, it is found that until 15% fine content is the limit showing different wetting front suction, beyond which the wetting band depth do not affect considerably the stability of unsaturated slopes.
When braced excavation with temporary retaining wall installation, is performed in loose sand with high ground water level boiling may be induced and considerable damage on the excavation works and structures in the vicinity can take place. Recently, for the purpose of reinforcement of ground and cut-off of ground water behind the temporary retaining wall, high pressure jet grouting is widely used. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of jet grouting on ground reinforcement and cut -off of the ground water behind temporary retaining walls for braced excavation. A series of both laboratory and field tests has been performed. The test results show that high pressure jet grouting has sufficient effects on reinforcement of stiffness of ground and retaining wall. The permeability of the improved ground was 10-f_ 10-3cm l s smaller than those of the original ground. Therefore, the effect on cut off of ground water behind temporary retaining walls could be improved by high pressure jet grouting method.

Tunnelling in water bearing soils influences the ground water regime. It has been indicated in the literature that the existence of ground water above a tunnel influences tunnel stability and the settlement profile. Only limited research, however, has been done on ground water movements around tunnels and their influence on tunnel performance. Time dependent soil behaviour can be caused by the changes of pore water pressure and/or the viscous properties of soil(creep) under the stress change resulting from the advance of the tunnel face. De Moor(1989) demonstrated that the time dependent deformations due to tunnelling are mainly the results of pore pressure dissipation and should be interpreted in terms of effective stress changes. Drainage into tunnels is governed by the permeability of the soil, the length of the drainage path and the hydraulic boundary conditions. The potential effect of lime dependent settlement in a shallow tunnel is likely to occur rapidly due to the short drainage path and possibly high coefficient of consolidation. Existing 2D modelling methods are not applicable to these tunnelling problems, as it is difficult to define empirical parameters. In this paper the time-based 2D modelling method is adopted to account for the three dimensional effect and time dependent behaviour during tunnel construction. The effect of coupling between the unloading procedure and consolidation during excavation is profoundly investigated with the method. It is pointed out that realistic modelling can be achieved by defining a proper permeability at the excavation boundary and prescribing appropriate time for excavation Some guidelines for the numerical modelling of drained and undrained excavation has been suggested using characteristic time factor. It is highlighted that certain range of the factor shows combined effect between the unloading procedure due to excavation and consolidation during construction.

Stability analyses on the 17 railroad cut-off soil slopes were carried out. The influences of rainfall infiltration on the slope stabilities were taken into account by seepage analyses using finite element method and by assuming ground water tables to be located adjacent to soil surface. The validity of those analyses were evaluated by comparing the slope failure characteristics between analysis results and the past failure records. The analyses were not appropriate to estimate the failure surface and the method considering only the increase of pore-water pressure (reduction of matric suction) as the influence of rainfall cannot appropriately estimate the surficial failures that occurred most of the cut-off soil slopes. For the better estimation of the surficial failure, the influence of water flows over slope surface which erode soil mass and/or increase driving force, should be evaluated and considered.

The influence of gas hydrate dissociation on submarine slope stability was studied in this paper. Gas hydrates are stable under high pressure and low temperature conditions. Once gas hydrate dissociates due to natural or human activities, it generates large amount of gas and water. During gas hydrate dissociation, a pore pressure between soil particles increases and results in the loss of an effective stress and degradation of soil stiffness. A pore pressures model was proposed to calculated excess pore pressures generated by gas hydrate dissociation at the Storegga Slide. A slope stability analysis for the Storegga Slide using a two dimensional finite difference method was carried out by considering excess pore pressures due to gas hydrate dissociation. Since the excess pore pressure calculated by the proposed method resulted in the considerable loss of stiffness and strength in slope, a submarine slope failure occurred at the Storegga slide was well simulated.
