  • In 1925, H.J. Joosten was the first in the world to use chemical injection grouts composed of sodium silicate and calcium chloride. This unique development prompted the introduction of other chemical grouting techniques. Among these chemical grouting techniques, sodium silicate based grout has been the most widely used in the world, but it has not been generally considered to be a permanent material. Therefore, studies to improve the weak points of sodium silicate based grout have been conducted, and new applications of grout were recently developed. We also developed the micro fine hybrid silicate grout of suspention type which properties are sepecialized as the high strength and durability, according to the reactant of special sodium silicate grout and the high strength hardener. As the results of this study we could derive the 2 times over high strength of Micro fine hybrid Silicate grouting method(MS method) more than that of the ordinary sodium silicate grout. And also we could confirm that the alkali leakage of micro fine hybrid silicate grout is less than that of ordinary sodium silicate grout. So we could get the high strength and durability of hybrid silicate grout are superior to those of ordinary sodium silicate grout.

  • Hydrated sodium silicate with 25 wt% water contents was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction using anhydrous sodium silicate. The hydrated sodium silicate was expanded at $370^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. and then pulverized, classified (- 200 mesh) and press-formed. The samples were heat treated at $400{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. in order to study the expansion characteristics depending on heat treatment temperature. A porous body with closed pore was formed above $600^{\circ}C$. The volume expansion ratio and the pore size were increased and the specific gravity was decreased with increasing heat treatment temperature. However, the volume expansion ratio was decreased and the specific gravity was increased above $850^{\circ}C$ due to the softening of the sodium silicate.

  • The formation of silica sol from sodium silicate solution and the growth of silica sols were investigated in this study. The $SiO_2$ content of 2% in sodium silicate solution was proper to oxidize sodium silicate with sulfuric acid. After the removal of sodium ions in sodium silicate solution, the pH of silicate solution had to be controlled above 9 for a stable silicate solution. The silica sol, which size is about 10 nm, could be prepared by heating the mixed solution of sodium silicate and silicate solution removed sodium ions at pH 10 and 80. And the silica sol grew into about 50 nm as silicate solution was added to silica sol solution.

  • The collapsibility of sodium silicate-bonded sands mixed with the L.D converter slag powder to form a hardener were investigated. Five to six percent sodium silicate on the basis of silica sand and 30-40% L.D converter slag powder on the basis of sodium silicate, were mixed and the compressive strength, surface stability index(SSI), bench time, retained strength of the standard sand specimens were measured. The properties were similar to those of general inorganic bonded self-setting molds. The compressive strength and surface stability index were increased and the retained strength and bench time were decreased with increased amount of the L.D converter slag powder. The retained strength of sodium silicate-bonded self-setting molds with the L.D converter slag powder were decreased than $CO_2$ sand molds. The collapsibility of sodium silicate-bonded self-setting molds with the L.D converter slag powder were superior in comparison with $CO_2$ sand molds. The L.D converter slag powder could be used as hardener and collapse agent for the sodium silicate-bonded self-setting molds.

  • Hydrated sodium silicate was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction using anhydrous sodium silicate. The optimum additions of water was 25wt% to make hydrated sodium silicate with homogeneous and purposed water contents. Porous ceramics with homogeneous microstructure and spherical closed pore can be fabricated by elimination of the large pores(a few mm in size) which was formed during first heat treatment through the decomposition of water. Spherical closed pore was formed above $600^{\circ}C$ and the pore size was increased with increasing second heat treatment temperature due to growth of pores. The size of spherical closed pore was varied from 35 to $233\;{\mu}m$ and specific gravity was varied from 0.2 to 1.02 depending on the combinations of the first and second heat treatment temperature.

  • This paper examined the bleaching effect of the two types of gel made with neutralizing agent such as sodium meta silicate gel & triethylamine gel mixed with carbopol resin 940 & 934 which has thickness effect in broad pH region and mixed with 10% hydrogen peroxide. Sodium meta silicate gel(1.6g included) provided pH 10, the most suitable environment for bleaching. The result of comparison of the baseline colour changes(${\Delta}E*ab$) and colour changes according to time(${\Delta}E*ab$) is as following. Group1(carbopol 940, sodium meta silicate, Urea Hydrogen Peroxide) showed 112% efficiency at CS-2; 63.3% at CS-4; 87.4% at CS-6. Group2(carbopol 934, sodium meta silicate, Urea Hydrogen Peroxide) showed 77.3%, 67.3%, 109.6% at CS-8, CS-10, CS-12 respectively; CT-1, CT-3, CT-5 of Group3(carbopol 940, triethylamine, Urea Hydrogen Peroxide) showed 36.8%, 73.2%, 74%; In Group4(carbopol 934, triethylamine, Urea Hydrogen Peroxide), efficiency of CT-6, CT-8, and CT-10 was 81.7%, 95.4%, and 95.7%. The paper showed that various concentration of neutralizing agent such as sodium meta silicate and triethylamine have bleaching effect. Viscosity of the gel including sodium meta silicate was higher than the gel including triethylamine. High viscosity helps the bleaching gel sit on the smooth slope of the ceramics. As a result, sodium meta silicate is considered to provide thickening and bleaching effect required in producing 10% hydrogen peroxide gel.

  • The kinetics and mechanism on the hydration of granulated blastfurnace slag-sodium silicate systems were studied by ignition loss, unreacted slag determination, XRD, DTA and SEM(EDS). From this experiment the following results were obtained. The amount of slag reaction was increased with the content of sodium silicate and also C-S-H, C4AH13, and C2ASH8 were formed to be the main products up to 28 days of hydration. Sodium silicate was not only an activator for slag hydration but also a binder in the hydration. The amount of slag reaction activated by sodium silicate was a nearly same for Ca(OH)2 activated slag, but it was smaller one than that activated by NaOH. However there was no difference in hydration products.

  • These are many kinds of self-hardening methods for sand mold using sodium silicate. When sodium silicate solution is mixed with calcium-orthosilicate powder hardening reaction occurs, which is based for self-hardening method at high temperature. The high temperature strength and resicual strength of mold are related to the mole ratio of sodium silicate and the contents of calcium-orthosilicate powder. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1) The high temperature strength of mold was maximum at about $600^{\circ}C$, and at higher temperature showed lower value on the contrary. 2) The high temperature strength of mold was increased by increasing the amount of sodium silicate having lower mole ratio and high concentration. 3) The residual strength of mold was reduced by increasing the mole ratio of sodium silicate and increasing the concentration of calcium-orthosilicate.
