  • Calcium alginate fiber were prepared by wet spinning of various conditions, including different concentrations of sodium alginate solution and $CaCl_2$ concentrations for coagulating the fiber through an absorption of calcium ion. The absorption of calcium ion during the coagulating step lead to solidify the fibers by the replacement of sodium ion with calcium ion to produce some crosslinking. The concentration of calcium ion in the calcium alginate fiber seems to be well related to the mechanical and physical property of the fiber, such as fiber strength moisture regain, and degree of swelling. The tensile strength of calcium alginate fiber was increased along with the increasing amount of sodium alginate solution. According to EDS analysis, 7 wt% $CaCl_2$ coagulation bath resulted in more calcium ion in the fiber compared to 3 wt% $CaCl_2$ coagulation bath. The decomposition temperature of calcium alginate fiber was $199^{\circ}C$, which $14^{\circ}C$ higher than that of sodium alginate.

  • The iodide was recovered from a simulated spent fuel to the sodium bisulfite aqueous solution. It was discussed that the trace iodide (below 1 ppm) was determined without the matrix effect of 0.1 M sodium bisulfite and 1 mM $HNO_3$ in aqueous solution by ion chromatography with UV detection. AS4A-SC (DIONEX) column and UV-absorption spectrophotometer were used. The UV-absorption spectra of sodium bisulfite, nitric acid and iodide were obtained, and then 230 nm was selected as an absorption wavelength for iodide determination. 0.1 M NaCl eluent was optimum condition. In this condition the calibration curve of iodide was obtained on the range of about 0-1,000 ppb. The linear coefficient was 0.99993 and the detection limit was 5 ppb. The relative standard deviation was 1.26%.

  • Er-doped sodiumborosilicate glass films for waveguides amplifier were fabricated by Aerosol Flame Deposition(AFD) method. Al2O3 was added to sodium borosilicate glass films to suppress the formation of crystalline phase and control the refractive index. the formation of crystalline phase was suppressed above Al2O3 of 6 wt%. As the amount of Al2O3 increased from 2 to 12 wt% the refractive index of glass films increased lineary from 1.4595 up to 1.4710. After the core of 77SiO2-15B2O3-8Na2O+6 wt%Al2O3+8wt%Er2O3 was coated on the buffer layer of 77SiO2-15B2O3-8Na2O+6 wt%Al2O3, the core was etched by reactive ion etching. The absorption spectrum of 3 cm waveguide amplifier showed two peaks of 1530 and 1550 nm.

  • We studied feasibility of three-dimensional optical memory by utilizing femtosecond laser-induced changes of transmission in photopolymers and photoluminescence in Eu and Sm ion doped sodium borate glasses. We produced transmission change by two photon absorption and obtained sub-Um size spots in photopolymers using 780 nm modelocked Ti-sapphire laser pulses. We also changed valence state of Eu and Sm ions by multi-photon absorption and achieved $\~{\mu}m$ sized spot formation in Sm-doped glasses.

  • Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations have been used to model the dynamics of the charge-compensating sodium ions in the non-stoichiometric hollandite Nax$(Ti_{8-x}Cr_x)O_{16}$. These interstitial ions reside in 'tunnels' in the crystal structure and move under the forces of both the ions making up the cage structure and the many body interactions of the other sodium ions in the tunnel. The Velocity Autocorrelation Function (VAF) of the sodium ions is calculated for a range of temperature from 250K to 1000K and converted into the linear ac-conductivity and ac-susceptibility response via Fourier transformation. A peak is found in the conductivity around $6\times10^{12}$ Hz that has some of the character of a Poley absorption. Here it is shown to be due to an harmonically coupled site vibrations of the sodium atoms, which extend only over a limited range. At frequencies below the peak the conductivity tends towards a constant i.e. dc value corresponding to a constant flow of ions through the simulation cell. At high temperatures the conductivity due to this ion transport process behaves like a metal with an insulator to metal transition occurring around a specific temperature.

  • This study was carried to figure out the effect of bleaching on the cationic surfactant (DSDMAC) absorption by cotton fabrics. And physico-chemical change, static electricity, and fabric stiffness of bleached cotton fabrics were measured. Cotton fabrics bleached with sodium hypochlorite soluton and with sodium percarbonate solution were used to analyze the DADMAC absorption. The results were as follows: 1. As the number of bleaching cycles were increased, the degree of oxidation on cotton fabrics was increased. So their carboxyl content was increased and their tensile strength was decreased. 2. DSDMAC absorption by cotton fabrics was increased by bleaching and was in propor- tion to carboxyl content. Therefore, it was groved that DSDMAC absorption by cotton fabrics was motivated by ion exchange mechanism. 3. The static electricity of cotton fabrics almost no change when bleached and unbleached absorption had no effect on the static electricity of cotton fabrics. 4. DSDMAC which was absorbed by cotton fabrics acted as a lubricant. DSDMAC absorption reduced the friction coefficient of yarn, so stiffness of cotton fabric was decreased.

  • We investigated the electronic structures of a poly sodium 4-styrensulfonate intercalated graphite oxide (PSSGO) electrode and a precursor graphite oxide (GO) electrode using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Both electrodes were obtained from electrochemical cells. We found that in the C K-edge XAS spectra the ${\pi}^*$ state intensity originating from the sp2 hybridization of graphite decreases predominantly in the graphite oxide and PSSGO electrodes. This indicates that the negatively charged electrolyte ion (BF4-) is absorbed onto the electrodes and is transferred to the ${\pi}^*$ state of the both electrodes. The analysis of their F K-edge spectra reveals that more BF4- ions were found in the PSSGO electrode than in the graphite oxide electrode. This indicates that more electrolyte ions are absorbed in the PSSGO than in the graphite oxide electrode. We argue that this is the main reason why PSSGO cells have higher capacitance, higher energy density, and higher power density when compared to the graphite oxide cells. We also found that BF4- is the primary working ion that can be inserted into the interlayers of the PSSGO electrode.

  • Sodium chloride is present in our body fluids, and the blood contains approximately 0.9 wt% salt, which plays an important role in maintaining the osmotic pressure. However, the amount of salt intake has consistently increased, and an excessive intake can be the cause of high blood pressure, etc. In this study, it was investigated in vivo and in vitro whether biocompatible ionic polymers with K or Ca ions can be replaced by Na ions through an ion exchange process to be excreted. Among the polymers, Ca-polystyrene sulfonate, K-polystyrene sulfonate, Ca-carrageenan, and Ca-tamarind had an excellent Na exchange ability in the body temperature, simulated gastric fluid and also simulated intestinal fluid. The mechanism of Na removal by absorption and excretion without changing food taste in the mouth through the insolubility properties of these polymers is expected to be a solution for the current problems related with excess sodium intake.
