  • This study examined the validity and the reliability of the perceived elderly stigma scale. Moreover, we investigated the relationships between the perceived elderly stigma and demographic factors (age, gender, education, and income). The initial scale consisted of 5 factors (ability, personality, appearance, authoritarian dependency, and child-obsession) and 28 items. In order to test the validity and the reliability of the scale, this study conducted a survey with 693 adults aged 18 to 65. Based on the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the scale was modified to 5 factors (ability, personality, appearance, authoritarian dependency, and child-obsession) and 15 items and its convergent validity and discriminant validity were confirmed. In terms of the relationships between the perceived elderly stigma and demographic factors, age had a negative relationship with the "ability" stigma, and education was a negatively associated with the "appearance" stigma.

  • Korea has successfully achieved a lowered fertility level owing to the strong population control policy and effective family planning program. Along with fertility decline and decreased number of children in family, average number of household members has decreased and nontraditional households such as one person household and households composed of unrelated individuals have prolifirated, even though the absolute number of them are found minimal in Korea. However in recent years several data and survey results suggest that one person households are gradually in the increasing trend. The study aimed at investigating the real state of one person households in Korea and next analyzing the proportional distribution of one person households by a few socioeconomic characteristics, thus providing basic for eatablishing far-singhted population and social welfare policy in the future. Korea has experienced high growth rate of economy through government-led development plans starting from the 1960s. During the past three decades, Korea has shifted from the agricultural state to the industrialized one. In compliance with the economic growth, urbanization and industrialization have brought about rural-to-urban migration and a great bulk of young population migrated to urban areas, who are seeking for educational and job opportunities. Korean society has also been under drastic change in every aspect of life involving norms, tradition, and attitude, etc. Therefore, in spite of the prejudice on 'living alone' still remaining, young people gradually leave parents and home, and further form nontraditional households in urban areas. Current increase in the number of one person households is partly attributable to the increase in high female educational attainment and female participation in economic activities. As the industrial structure in Korea changes from primary into secondary and tertiary industries, job opportunities for service/sales and manufacturing are opened to young female labor force in the process of industrialization. Contrary to the formation of one person households by young people, the aged single households are composed when children in family leave one by one because of marriage, education, employment. In particular, a higher proportion of aged female single households occur in rural areas due to the mortality difference by sex. Based on the data released form the 1990 Population and Housing Census and National Fertility and Family Health Survey in 1985 and 1991, the study tried to examine the state of one person households in Korea. According to Census data, the number of one person households increased to 1, 021, 000 in 1990, comprising 9.0 percent of total households. And the survey reveal that among total 11, 540 households, 8.0 percent, 923 households, are composed of one person households. Generally, the proportion of female single households is greater than that of male ones, and a big proportion of one person households is concentrated in the 25-34 age bracket in urban areas and 65 years and more in rural areas. It is shown than one person householders in urban areas have higher educational attainment with 59.2 percent high schooling and over in 1991, Job seeking proved to be the main reason for leaving home and forming one person households. The number of young female single households with higher education and economic self-reliance are found nil and the study did not allow to analyze the causal realtionship between female education and employment and one person household formation. However more research and deep analysis on the causal facors on one person household formation using statistical method are believed to be necessary.

  • Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of an ultrasound-based bar graph proportional to the quadriceps muscle thickness as a real-time visual feedback training tool in the elderly. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-four elderly persons participated in this study and were randomly divided into three groups: oral training group (n=8, group 1), ultrasound imaging group (n=8, group 2), and graph group (n=8, group 3). In the pre condition, all participants performed maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of the quadriceps with knee extension three times with oral training. In the post condition, group 1 performed MVIC of the quadriceps with oral training, group 2 performed MVIC of the quadriceps with real-time visual feedback using ultrasound imaging, and group 3 performed MVIC of the quadriceps with real-time visual feedback using a bar graph proportional to the quadriceps muscle thickness, three times for all groups. Muscle thickness, activity (mean, peak), tone, stiffness, logarithmic decrement, relaxation, and creep were measured in both conditions in all participants. Results: Visual feedback with a bar graph showed significant effects on muscle thickness, mean muscle activity, and peak muscle activity compared with oral training and visual feedback with ultrasound imaging (p<0.05). Conclusions: Isometric training of the quadriceps with real-time visual feedback using a bar graph proportional to the quadriceps muscle thickness may be more effective than other methods in improving muscle thickness and muscle activity. This study presented a tool that can help increase muscle thickness in the elderly.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of ageism experience of the elderly on depression, where the loneliness was mediated between ageism experience and depression. To investigate the cause and effect of factors, we purposively collected 309 samples from 16 Gyungrodangs evenly located in Jeonju and 291 samples, survived the data screening such as missing values, outliers, normality and covariance conditions, were analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, reliability, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model analysis. As the results, first, we confirmed ageism experience positively affected depression of the elderly. Second, ageism experience of the elderly also positively affected loneliness. Third, loneliness positively influenced depression. Fourth, ageism experience had effects directly as well as indirectly on depression medicated by loneliness. Based on the results, in the aged society, combating law, policy, and propaganda against ageism would be helpful to the elderly and individually customized program for ageism victim's mental health would be recommended.

  • Purpose: This study was performed in order to assess the effect of the surface treatment methods and the use of bonding agent on the shear bond strength (SBS) between the aged CAD-CAM (computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing) hybrid materials and added composite resin. Materials and methods: LAVA Ultimate (LU) and VITA ENAMIC (VE) specimens were age treated by submerging in a $37^{\circ}C$ water bath filled with artificial saliva (Xerova solution) for 30 days. The surface was ground with #220 SiC paper then the specimens were divided into 9 groups according to the combination of the surface treatment (no treatment, grinding, air abrasion with aluminum oxide, HF acid) and bonding agents (no bonding, Adper Single Bond 2, Single Bond Universal). Each group had 10 specimens. Specimens were repaired (added) using composite resin (Filtek Z250), then all the specimens were stored for 7 days in room temperature distilled water. SBS was measured and the fractured surfaces were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). One-way ANOVA and Scheffe test were used for statistical analysis (${\alpha}=.05$). Results: Mostly groups with bonding agent treatment showed higher SBS than groups without bonding agent. Among the groups without bonding agent the groups with aluminum oxide treatment showed higher SBS. However there was no significant difference between groups except two subgroups within LU group, which revealed a significant increase of SBS when Single Bond Universal was used on the ground LU specimen. Conclusion: The use of bonding agent when repairing an aged LAVA Ultimate restoration is recommended.

  • This paper analyzes whether local public expenditures have converged during the 1985-2011 periods in Korea, using the sixteen metropolitan and provincial governments data. We analyze the convergence of per capita real local public expenditures in terms of both static view and dynamic view of convergence. Furthermore, we derive the estimating equation for per capita real local government expenditure growth function from theoretical model based on Skidmore et al.(2004)[23]. The main results from empirical analyses are such that an increase in aged people helped local government expenditures increase. Also, we found that the convergence speed of economic expenditure is greater than that of social welfare expenditure. Similarly the convergence speed of public capital expenditure is greater than that of public consumption expenditure. In the future we had better examine the convergence of local public goods taking into account their congestion rates.

  • This study was done to investigate effects of antioxidant supplementation on phytohemagglutinin (PHA) -stimulated interleukin-2 (IL-2) production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in elderly women. This study was designed as a placebo-controlled, single-blinded, randomized intervention trial. Twenty four elderly women aged over 60 years, visitings social welfare center in Seoul were divided into 3 groups, placebo (n = 8), vitamin C supplemented (n = 8) , and vitamin E supplemented (n = 8) groups. Experimental groups were given either 1000mg of L-ascorbic acid or 400 ill of d- $\alpha$-tocopherol for 4 weeks. There was no significant difference in antioxidant vitamins intakes and their plasma levels among pre-intervention groups. Plasma vitamin C or E levels was significantly increased after vitamin C or E sup-plementations. The increases of plasma thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) levels in the placebo group were significantly higher than those of the supplemented 2 groups. There were no significant differences in the changes of plasma IL-2 level between pre- and post-intervention among the 3 groups. However there was a significant increase in PHAstimulated IL-2 production by PBMCs after 4-week vitamin E or vitamin C supplementation. Particularly, vitamin E supplemented group showed a higher PHA-stimulated IL-2 production than vitamin C supplemented group. These results indicate that vitamin E or vitamin C supplementation might enhance mitogen-stimulated cytokine production by immune cells, which could be one of the factors to improve health status in the elderly.

  • This study aims to understand public perceptions of aging Korean society and related factors in the context of population aging and generational difference. Data are from 1,498 individuals older than 20 who were recruited through the quota sampling technique. Results indicated that the respondents reported less then three as the number of positive aspects of aging Korean society. Among the factors related to population aging, such as knowledge about aging, perceptions about family care, anxiety about later life, and perspectives about generational conflict, anxiety about later life was shown to be negatively associated with perception of aging Korean society across age groups. Respondents 65 and older showed more positive perception about aging Korean society and this association was conditioned by perspectives about generational conflict. Perspectives about generational conflict revealed positive associations with perception of aging Korean society among respondents aged 20-44 and 45-64, while no association was found among those 65 and older. Discussions focused on ways to alter perceptions of aging Korean society and needs for future research on this topic.

  • Objective : This study aimed to examine the association Self-Rated Health(hereafter SRH) and Activities of Daily Living(hereafter ADL), Independent Activities of Daily Living(hereafter IADL) among Korean elderly. Methods : Using nationally representative cross sectional studies called 2014 Survey of living conditions and welfare needs of Korean elder persons. We used SRH as an independent variable, disabilities of ADL and IADL as dependent variables. Logistic regression was implemented and potential confounders such as socio-economic status, demographic characteristics and others were adjusted. Results : It was revealed that people who were female(than male) and 75 or more years old(than less than 75 years old) were shown to have poor SRH and disabilities of both ADL and IADL. In logistic regression model, poor SRH was associated with ADL and IADL disabilities. Especially, their association was more remarkable among male than among female. It can be understood that socio-economic contexts affect quality of life among elderly and SRH can be differently perceived by gender. Conclusions : Our notable findings showed that gender perspective is needed to understand SRH and daily living among elderly.

  • The purpose of this study was to find concrete measures to improve the subjective health level, happiness and quality of life of the elderly according to economic level and to propose social and policy alternatives accordingly. As a research method, 63,929 elderly people aged 65 or older were surveyed using the Community Health Survey (Indicator Bank) _v09, and the frequency of health use by economic level, subjective health level, euphoria and quality of life Analysis and Chi square analysis and independent t-test. Multi variate logistic regression analysis was performed with subjective health level as a dependent variable and multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine the factors affecting euphoria and quality of life. The results of the study are as follows. In the case of recipients, medical use was lower than that of non-recipients, lower education level, female age of 75 years or older, and less stress, In case of present or past recipients, the result of non - receipt increased as the subjective health level was worse, and the non - recipient had higher euphoria and quality of life. As a result, there is a need for alternatives to increase opportunities for medical use among the recipients, with particular attention being paid to women and elderly people over 75 years old. It is expected to be used as a basic data to effectively improve the health promotion, happiness and quality of life of the elderly people of low income group.
