  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of smartphone use on structured social network types in the Korean elderly population. Data was derived from the 2014 survey of living conditions and welfare needs of Korean older persons collected by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. A total of 4,180 participants were selected for the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) analysis. Based on propensity score estimates, the 491 smartphone users (treatment group) and 491 featurephone users (control group) were matched. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between smartphone use and structural social network types. The results showed that among retired older adults, people using smartphone had significantly better structured social networks than those using featurephone even after controlling for covariates. Smartphone users had the higher levels of social contact and social activity. These findings suggested empirical evidence that using smartphone positively affects structured social networks, which might be used as the basis for designing intervention programs to promote social networks and social engagement of retired older adults.

  • This study aims to verify the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between online social relations service utilization(PC, mobile) and life satisfaction for middle-aged and Older Adults. For this purpose, the '2017 Digital Devide Survey' data collected by the National Information Society Agency was used, and among 2,300 middle-aged and Older Adults aged 55 or older, 1,488 people using the Internet were selected as the final analysis target. Then, using the structural equation, the mediating effect of social support was verified in the between online social relations service utilization and life satisfaction. As a result, it was verified that higher levels of mobile-based social relations service utilization have a positive effect on social support and life satisfaction. Also, it was confirmed that social support has a mediating effect in the relationship between the utilization of mobile-based social relations service and life satisfaction. However, the utilization of PC-based social relations services did not show to affect social support and life satisfaction. Therefore, the results of this study can be used as basic data for practical measures to increase the connection between mobile-based social relationship service education and social support promotion education for middle-aged and Older Adults. In addition, the study is meaningful in that it overcomes the limitations of measuring the use of online social relations services as one, and selects tools that are practically effective by dividing them into mobile and PC.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the social gerontology studies in the Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society during 1980-2008 in terms of research topics, research methods, and theoretical trends. A total of 161 studies were analyzed; 27 studies in 1980's, 52 studies in 1990's, and 82 studies in 2000's. The major findings were as follows. First, the research topics were classified into five categories; 1) social change and social system (34 studies), 2) actual socio-condition (62 studies), 3) social problem and deviation (34 studies), 4) social culture (25 studies), and 5) gerontology study and gerontological theory (6 studies), and the major research trends and research results were examined. Second, in research methods, most of studies in 1980's were literature reviews and studies tended to be gradually expanded to quantitative research, but there were only eight quantitative researches. In statistical methods applied to the quantitative researches, thirty-six percent of the researches used basic statistical techniques, sixty-four percent advanced statistical techniques, and the basic ones were gradually replaced by the advanced ones. Third, most of the studies examined the social facts through relevant documents and statistics, or introduced the theories. So, only 12 studies (7.5%) were based on theories. Finally, the studies on various sociological research topics, qualitative studies, longitudinal studies, studies based on theories, and international cooperative studies, inter-disciplinary or multi-disciplinary studies were suggested for the future.

Many people across the globe live in a social culture that encourages staying up late to meet the demands of various activities, such as work and school. Sleep deprivation (SD) is a severe health problem in modern society. Meanwhile, as with cardiometabolic disease, there was an obvious tendency that coronary heart disease (CHD) to become a global epidemic chronic disease. Specifically, SD can significantly increase the morbidity and mortality of CHD. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for the effects of SD on CHD are multilayered and complex. Inflammatory response, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and endothelial function all contribute to cardiovascular lesions. In this review, the effects of SD on CHD development are summarized, and SD-related pathogenesis of coronary artery lesions is discussed. In general, early assessment of SD played a vital role in preventing the harmful consequences of CHD.

  • This study aims to verify the mediating effect of mobile social participation on the relationship between the mobile device capability and life satisfaction. Using the data of 2018 Digital Divide Survey conducted by the National Information Society Agency(NIA), the mediating effect was verified by Baron & Kenny (1986)'s 3 step process, targeting 1,665 middle and older aged adults. The result is as follows: first, the mobile device capability of the middle and older aged people has a positive effect on life satisfaction. Second, the effect of the mobile device capability of middle and older aged people on life satisfaction is partially mediated by mobile social participation including expressing opinions on social concerns, proposing policies and filing a civil complaint, donation and volunteering work and online voting and responding to a poll. The result represents that the mobile device, such as a smart phone or a smart pad, capability of the middle and older aged group not only directly benefits the group but also helps expand their mobile social participation, which leads to, although indirectly, higher life satisfaction. Therefore, the study is expected to be a groundwork for a practical intervention for enlarging the use of mobile device and lifting digital information level of the elderly to encourage mobile social participation and drive life satisfaction.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how level of digital information usage of the middle-aged or elderly people affects life satisfaction and whether social capital mediates the relationship between level of digital information usage and life satisfaction. In this study, we analyzed data of 1,661 people aged 55 or older from the 「2018 Survey on Digital divide」 by the National Information Society Agency. The SPSS 25.0 statistical package was used for the mutiple regression analysis and Baron and Kenny(1986)'s steps for mediation. The statistical significance of the mediated effects of social capital was verified by the Sobel Test. As a result of the analysis, the aged people have a higher life satisfaction when they are women and older, do not live alone, have higher levels of digital informatization usage and social capital. In addition, social capital also revealed to have a mediating role between level of digital information usage and life satisfaction. This shows that social capital needs to be considered along with the level of digital information usage as a way to improve life satisfaction of the middle-aged or the elderly people.
