Varietal difference in seed shape and size, water absorption rate, and soybean sprouts was compared. In general, soybean seeds of yellow seed-coat and spherical shape with 100 seeds of 9.0$\pm$2g were evaluated as the best ones; Pungsannamulkong out of tested varieties was considered to be the best one in these respect. Varietal difference in water absorption yale depending on the soaking duration and temperature was recognized; Jungeri and Jillin 3 showed higher water absorption rate at higher temperature but it was completely vice versa for Pungsannamulkong. It took about 15 hours(soaking at 2$0^{\circ}C$) for seed shape of size to grow to 10mm in length. Maximum enlargement in thickness of soybean seeds was made right after the completion of repeated soaking-drying treatment but three hours and nine hours soaking were needed for one time-soaking and non-soaking treatment, respectively. Varietal difference in germination rate was recognized between one hour's soaking at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and two hour's soaking at 15$^{\circ}C$ The growth rate for Jillin 3 was excellent at all soaking methods and temperatures while three hours of soaking was the best for Jungeril and Pungsannamulkong, regardless of soaking temperatures. The growth of hypocotyl length showed somewhat faster in repeated soaking-drying than one time-soaking and non-soaking while the increase of hypocotyl thicknes was better in one-time soaking than repeated soaking-drying.
Plywood, the representative interior decorative or structural material, is so inflammable that it may cause big fires. Therefore, it is required inevitably to manufacture the "Fire retardant treated plywood", and it will be a study on the redrying of treated plywood that we ought to solve. This study was carried out to investigate the absorption of 20% $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ solution into the soaked plywoods by hot/cold soaking for 3/3, 6/3, 9/3 and 12/3 hours and to study drying process with drying curves and drying rates by press-drying at the platen temperature of 130, 145, 160 and $175^{\circ}C$. Solution absorption of plywoods in hot/cold soaking method increased steadily with the prolonged soaking time, and water absorption is higher than DAP absorption, and then chemical retention (DAP) exceeded the minimum retention [$1.125kg/(30cm)^3$] even in the shortest soaking treatment. Drying curves of water-soaked plywoods inclined more steeply than those of DAP soaked plywoods. And the drying proceeded rapidly with the increase in platen temperature and terminated in 2.5-4 minutes at the temperature of 160 and $170^{\circ}C$. Drying rate also increased generally with the increase of platen temperature. So it was at $175^{\circ}C$ in DAP-soaking and at $160^{\circ}C$ in water-soaking when the drying rate became above 10%/min.
This study is to examine the PEG concentration, and drying humidity and drying periods of humidity-controlled drying(HCD) for conservation of waterlogged woods(Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), and dimension stability of HCD were compared with those of air-drying and vacuum freeze-drying(VFD). Dimension stability of vacuum freeze-drying was the most excellent, i.e., PEG crystal was uniformly distributed in woods. Increasing concentrations of PEG, dimension stability of HCD was increased and drying periods decreased. Dimension stability of HCD after the treatment with the high concentration(70%) of PEG soaking was similar to those of VFD after the treatment with the low concentration(40%) of PEG soaking. In conclusion, high concentration(about 70% in water) PEG solution was the most suitable as a pre-treatment for HCD of waterlogged woods. However, drying should be maintained with enough high humidity and longer period.
To reduce the astringent taste of lotus root, the effects of various treatment methods such as drying, soaking, steaming and roasting on the physicochemical properties and sensory characteristics were investigated. The following process conditions were selected: 1) drying (D), 2) soaking followed by drying ($SK{\rightarrow}D$), 3) steaming followed by drying ($ST{\rightarrow}D$), 4) drying followed by roasting ($D{\rightarrow}R$), 5) soaking and then drying followed by roasting ($SK{\rightarrow}D{\rightarrow}R$), 6) steaming and then drying followed by roasting ($ST{\rightarrow}D{\rightarrow$}. The tannin content of the lotus root was lowest when it was treated by steaming followed by drying ($ST{\rightarrow}D$). The astringent taste of lotus root was reduced by steaming, and the roasted taste was improved by roasting in terms of sensory and flavor characteristics. Consequently, lotus root treated by steaming and then drying followed by roasting ($ST{\rightarrow}D{\rightarrow}R$) showed the highest preference with respect to astringent and roasted taste.
Factors affecting the survival of out planted Cryptomena and Japaneses Cypress seedlings. (I) - Especially on the drying and water soaking duration There are often the cases of poor survival percentage for the economic forest establishments of Cryplomeria japonica D. Don. and Chamaecyparis obtusa End. This study was carried out to investigate the survival factors of both 1-1 seedlings and Cryptomena cutting Seedlings by room drying conditions, day drying conditions, OED green water soaking treatment and drying duration at the forest nursery of Chonnam National University from February to September. 1979. The results are as follows: 1. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. fluctuation in then moisture contents(MC) rapidly decreased and M.C. fluctuation in indoor until 5 p.m. showed the same results with the amount of an hour fluctuation in outdoor. 2. M.C. fluctuations between OED green and non-treatment of these seedlings were silghtly different. 3. The survival percentage of OED green and non-treatment of seedlings were highly significant in the room drying conditions and the day drying conditions respectively The effects of water soaking treatment on rooting was negligible. The survival percentage of seedlings of OED green was higher than that of non-treatment. 4. Although survival percentage of Japanese Cypress was almost in accord with Cryptomena, the power of resistance to drying was lower m Japanese Cypress than m Cryptomeria. 5. Compared with Cryptomena seedlings the survival percentage of Cryptomeria cutting seedlings was higher and not influenced at all in case of being drying for two hours; but it was highly significant in interactions between the drying time and the water soaking time. 6. When Cryptomena and Japanese Cypress seedling become drying in indoor for four days, the survival percentage remarkably reduced after two days and also was highly significant among numbers of drying days.

In this study, the effects of varying the amount of water, soaking time at $25^{\circ}C$ and drying time after soaking at $45^{\circ}C$ on the induction of resveratrol were evaluated to optimize the soaking treatment by response surface methodology (RSM). After response surface regression (RSREG), the second-order polynomial equation was fitted to the experimental data. The analysis of variance showed that the model appeared to be adequate $(R^2=0.9547)$ with no significant lack of fit (p>0.1). From statistical analysis, amount of water and soaking time were found to be significant factors. On the other hand, drying time was not significant. Ridge analysis showed that the optimized parameters were $67.15\%$ for amount of water, 19.58 hr for soaking time, 65.56 hr for drying time. It was confirmed that resveratrol content was increased from $0.1\;{\mu}g/g$ to $4.55\;{\mu}g/g$ under the optimized conditions. In addition, the experimental values at the optimized condition agreed with values predicted by ridge analysis. The analytical method validation parameters such as accuracy, precision, and specificity were calculated to ensure the method's validity.
In vitro physiological functions such as jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) urease inhibitory activity and retarding effect of glucose/bile acid of Aloe vera gel concentrated by the optimized DIS (Dewatering Impregnation & Soaking) process conditions were examined. Urease inhibitory activity of DIS aloes ranged from 84.6 to 94.4%, which was similar to or higher than 86.3% of fresh aloe. Also, urease inhibitory activity of DIS aloes was maintained at initial levels after heat treatment (90$^{\circ}C$, 10 min.) and drying treatment (freeze or hot air drying). Urease inhibition pattern from Lineweaver-Burk plot indicated general non-competitive inhibition, and inhibition constants ($K_{IE}$ and $K_{IES}$) of DIS aloes were 41-149 and 87-163 $\mu$L/mL, respectively. DIS(glucose) and DIS(polyethylene glycol) exhibited the highest retarding effect of glucose and bile acid. Their retarding effects were about 1.6 and 1.8 folds higher than that of fresh aloe after 0.5 and 1 hr of the dialysis, respectively. Conclusively, the above in vitro physiological functions of Aloe vera gel concentrated by DIS process suggested that aloe products treated with DIS would have the potential benefits for protection against Helicobacter pylori and reduction of blood glucose and cholesterol levels.

This research aims to secure fundamental data for the development offire-retardant wood by soaking dried wood in fire-retardant liquid. To dry wood, optimal drying conditions for softwood usually used as structural material and hardwood usually used as finishing or furniture material were derived by varying the microwave outputs and heating times of microwave wood drying equipment. The research foundthat each specimen needs 8 to 15 minutes of heating time depending on water content and output. For softwood, fire-retardant liquid equivalent to about 10 percent of the total mass of the specimen infiltrated into the dried wood, of which the water content was reduced to 5~6 percent.
Dimension stability was examined after PEG pretreatment and post freeze-drying treatment in order to determine the PEG(#3350) concentration and solvent for pre-treatment of freeze-drying of highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods(Fraxinus spp.; ca. 5,700 BP) excavated from peat lands at Pyungtack, Kyounggi-do. At the low concentration (<30-40%) of PEG soaking in both water and t-butanol, the weight increases abruptly, but at high concentration (>50%) gradually, consequently, taking longer treatment time. PEG loading was higher in t-butanol solution than in water. However, the best dimesional stability was obtained from freeze-drying after lower PEG solution (40% in water) soaking. Low dimensional stability, found in the samples treated with higher PEG solutions (60%-70% in t-butanol), might come from incomplete freezing and excess PEG absorbing moisture. The samples air-dried after 70% PEG treatment had collapse defects. In conclusion, the use of low concentration (about 40% in water) PEG solution was the most suitable pretreatment for freeze drying of highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods.
Oriental melon has been increased in production amount, but its processed food was not made in spite of the fact that shelf-life of the fresh fruit is short. This study was carried out to develop a dried product with no use sulfur treatment. Fresh melons were peeled, cut into 6 pieces, and soaked to the following pretreatments soaking in sugar syrup(SS), sodium chloride(SC), ascorbic acid(AA) and sodium polyphosphate(SP). After preatreatments the melon pieces were dried by hot air drying at 5$0^{\circ}C$ for 9 and 12 hours, and the dried melons were air blown at $25^{\circ}C$ for 1 day. The dried samples were evaluated for moisture content, texture, rotor, and sensory quality. The moisture content of dried melons soaked in SS and SC were lower than those that were soaked in AA and SP after hot air drying. The melons dried for 12 hours were high in hardness, gumminess, chewness and adhesiveness and excellent in sensory evaluation compared to 9 hours. The "L" value of SS was higher and the "a" value was lower in Hunter color. And SS treatment inhibited browning of the dried melon and improved sensory characteristics in color, flavor, texture and taste. Sucrose concentration had no significant effect on color, hardness and sensory score in banal product. The combination of SS with SP represented a highly effective antibrowning treatment for the dried melon and the product was kept in good color for 3 months at room temperature.at room temperature.
