  • An improved one-dimensional modeling of snow melting was obtained by considering both the effect of heat capacity and the decreasing influence of porosity. Using the improved model, the effects of initial snow temperature, initial snow density and the heat flux on the snow melting were investigated. It is found that the drainage starting time is delayed and the drainage rate becomes smaller with lower initial snow temperature. ResuIts also show that the drainage starts at the same time when an initial snow density is over a certain value. Melting efficiency increases linearly with an increasing initial snow temperature. With increasing the initial density of the snow and the amount of heat supplied, the melting efficiency increases, then converges to a constant value.

  • One dimensional numerical modeling was carried out for the melting behavior of dry snow and the unsaturated flow when heat was supplied from the bottom surface. Discrepancy between the previous experimental data and the present numerical results is substantially reduced by considering the density change of water permeation layer due to the infiltration of meltwater. In the parametric study for effective thermal conductivity, it was found that the effect of this parameter to the behavior of snow melting is minor. Sensitivity analysis showed that the melting time is most sensitive to changes in supplied heat flux, snow temperature, and bulk density, whereas snow bulk density and residual saturation have a significant effect on the height of water permeation layer in snow.

  • Background: In this article, it was analyzed how snow melting affects the assembly of lichen and moss communities in a small area of the coastal region of Barton Peninsula, which is in maritime Antarctic. In the small area, even though there is a huge gap of difference of the environment between the snow-filled area and snow-melt one, the latter did not have distinctive environmental gradients. Results: Depending on the snow melting time, coverage and species diversity of lichens and mosses tend to increase remarkably. For species with significant changes depending on the snow-covered period, there are Andreaea regularis, crustose lichens, Placopsis contortuplicata, Usnea aurantiaco-atra, and snow algae. In this area, the process of vegetation assembly process has shown the directional development in the order of snow algae${\rightarrow}$crustose, lichen sub-formation${\rightarrow}$fruticose lichen, moss cushion sub-formation (Andreaea sociation)${\rightarrow}$fruticose lichen, and moss cushion sub-formation (Usnea sociation), according to the order of snow melting. These directional development stages are shown in gradual change in small area with the snow melting phenomena. However, in the snow-free area, where water is sufficiently supplied, it is expected that moss carpet sub-formation (Sanionia sociation) will be developed. Vegetation development in the small area with the snow melting phenomena, depending on differences of resistance on snow kill and moisture settled by species in according to the time of snow melting, tolerance model to form community is followed. Conclusions: The research results explain the development of vegetation in the Antarctic tundra and its spatial distribution according to the period for growth of lichens and mosses in the summer time by differences of snow melting in the small area. In the future, if research for the community development process in a large scale will be done, it will be helpful to figure out temporal and spatial dynamic of vegetation in the Antarctic tundra where snow and glaciers melt rapidly due to climatic warming.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a snow melting system using the pulsating heat pipe(PHP). The experimental apparatus is consisted of a PHP, a concrete structure, a constant water thermostatic bath and a flowmeter. The experiment was performed at the outdoor air temperature of $-8^{\circ}C$ and inlet temperature of hot water of $75^{\circ}C$. PHP is the closed and non-loop type heat exchanger which is charging R-410A as an operating fluid. As experimental results, the temperature profile of vertical and horizontal orientation of concrete structure was measured with operating time. The heat flux of the snow melting was required more than 300 $W/m^2$. We confirmed that the snow melting system using the PHP was useful for anti-freezing road.

  • Snow albedo can be decreased if there are any impurities on the snow surface other than the snow itself. Due to the decrease of snow albedo, melting rates of surface snow can increase, which is very crucial in climate change and hydrogeology in many parts of the world. Anthropogenic black carbons caused by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuel affect snow and tephra particles generated by geologic volcanic activities reduce snow albedo. In this study, we investigated isotopic compositions for snow covered by tephra particles and compared with this with clean snow. Isotopic compositions of snow with tephra statistically show more enriched than those of clean snow (p<0.02). This can be explained by the fact that snow becomes enriched in $^{18}O$ or D relative to meltwater as melting rates are increased. In addition, the slopes of the linear regression between oxygen and hydrogen for snow with tephra and clean snow are 6.7 and 8, respectively, and the latter is similar to that of the global meteoric water line of 8. Therefore, we can conclude that snow impurities control the isotopic compositions of snow, which is very crucial in the study of climate change and hydrogeology. To quantitatively explain these observations, melting experiments and numerical approaches are required.

  • This paper describes an optimal design of electric snow melting mat on vulnerable walk zone. In order to design an optimal electric power of snow melting mat and protect pedestrians with a nonslip mat, with considering protection of environmental pollution from abusing of the de-icing salts added calcium chloride. We analyzed nine snow melting mats through verification experiment in the condition of $-5^{\circ}C$, depending on three different kinds of heating material, electric heating cable, carbon heating film and carbon textile film. As a consequence, the $150W/m^2$ carbon textile film mat for snow melting was identified as an optimal power input and functional performance for pedestrians' safety on vulnerable walk zone. It is expected that the $150W/m^2$ carbon textile film mat would be useful to reduce slip down accidents by human error.

  • Snow melting system is adapted for safety and environment sides. Geothermal System has some problem of unbalance between summer and winter heat loads. Snow melting system with piping system is widely adapted in Japan. In this paper, the variation of road surface temperature along time for heating load is investigated. And for checking the difference between electrical melting system and piping melting system, other design parameters is investigated.

  • A sliding accident on the road have a high percentage by road freezing, especially, it is often appeared at bridges and tunnel of freezing areas. Thus, the stability of road operations is enhanced by preventing a partial freezing phenomenon. According to the geothermal snow melting system analysis, a pattern of thermal conductivity is found out about pavement materials of concrete and asphalt when it is buried. For the feasibility study on geothermal snow melting system, analysis of the ground melting point when operating system, life evaluation of pavements and safety evaluation of pipes are performed.

  • This study proposes a hybrid geothermal system combined with heating mode and snow-melting mode for winter season in order to increase the annual operating efficiency of the GSHP(Ground Source Heat Pump). The purpose of this study is to get effectiveness of the hybrid geothermal system by the site experiments. In case of snow-melting only mode, the GSHP COP is 0.7 higher than system COP in average. And in case of hybrid mode, heating GSHP COP is 0.5 higher than snow-melting GSHP COP. And it is also found out that all COP obtained through measurement periods is higher than nominal COPs given by GSHP manufacturer. As a conclusion, it is clear that the proposed hybrid geothermal system is expected as a highly efficient system.

  • Thermosyphons are simple devices that can passively transport thermal energy over relatively long distance with little temperature degradation. These attributes permit the use of low grade thermal energy for thermal control of structures including the snow melting and deicing to the pavement surface. The thermosyphon system requires no costly energy input and Is completely maintenance free. This paper presents the experimental results of the snow melting system in which thermosyphon was utilized to transfer the geothermal energy to the pavement to obviate slipping traffic accidents due to freezing of pavement in winter.
