A snapping-beam microswitch has been designed, fabricated and tested. From a design analysis, necessary and sufficient conditions for a snap-through switching fouction have been derived for a clamped shallow beam. The necessary condition has resulted in a geometric relation, in which the ratio of beam thickness to initial beam deflection plays a key role in the snapping ability. The sufficient condition for the snapping action has been obtained as a function of the inertia force due to applied acceleration, and the electrostatic force, adjustable by an inter-electrode voltage. For experimental investigations, a set of microbeams of silicon dioxide/$P^+$silicon bimorphs have been fabricated. Geometric size and mechanical behavior of each material film have been measured from on-chip test structures. Estimated and measured characteristics of the fabricated devices are compared.
This paper aims to study the large deflections of variable-arc-length elastica subjected to the terminal forces (e.g., axial force and torque). Based on Kirchhoff's rod theory and with help of Euler parameters, the set of nonlinear governing differential equations which free from the effect of singularity are established together with boundary conditions. The system of nonlinear differential equations is solved by using the shooting method with high accuracy integrator, seventh-eighth order Runge-Kutta with adaptive step-size scheme. The error norm of end conditions is minimized within the prescribed tolerance ($10^{-5}$). The behavior of VAL elastica is studied by two processes. One is obtained by applying slackening first. After that keeping the slackening as a constant and then the twist angle is varied in subsequent order. The other process is performed by reversing the sequence of loading in the first process. The results are interpreted by observing the load-deflection diagram and the stability properties are predicted via fold rule. From the results, there are many interesting aspects such as snap-through phenomenon, secondary bifurcation point, loop formation, equilibrium configurations and effect of variable-arc-length to behavior of elastica.

The structural system that discreterized continuous shells is frequently used to make dome-type structures and these structures show the unstable phenomena by snap-through or bifurcation when a load level reaches certain critical value. The characteristic structural behaviour of a cable dome shows a strong nonlinearity and very sensitive according to the initial imperfection. In this study the shape finding problem by applying initial tension stress is investigated and using this the unstable phenomena of perfectly shaped and initially imperfected shape model by external forces are examined to grasp the unstable behavior of cable dome using the Geiger-type model.

This paper investigates the characteristics of unstable behaviour and critical buckling load by joint rigidity of framed large spatial structures which are sensitive to initial conditions. To distinguish the stable from the unstable, a singular point on equilibrium path and a critical buckling level are computed by the eigenvalues and determinants of the tangential stiffness matrix. For the case study, a two-free node example and a folded plate typed long span example with 325 nodes are adopted, and these adopted examples' nonlinear analysis and unstable characteristics are analyzed. The numerical results in the case of the two-free node example indicate that as the influence of snap-through is bigger; that of bifurcation buckling is lower than that of the joint rigidity as the influence of snap-through is lower. Besides, when the rigidity decreases, the critical buckling load ratio increases. These results are similar to those of the folded-typed long span example. When the buckling load ratio is 0.6 or less, the rigidity greatly increases.

An automatic incremental algorithm for geometric non-linear finite element analysis of the structures subjected to the conservative and non-conservative forces is presented. By making efficient combination of the load incremental method and the displacement incremental method, this scheme can trace various post-buckling equilibrium path such as snap-through and turning-back. Several numerical examples to demonstrate the feasibility of the present algorithm, over ranges of deformation that are well beyond those likely to occur in practical structures, are given and discussed.
The EGI system is a new communication method in limelight for helping disabled users to input and handle information on the computer more easily. However, due to the EGI system's "JEM(Jittery Eye Movements)" generation, it actually increases heavy psychological and physiological stresses for the user to input or perceive the target information on a machine. This study illustrates how to resolve this "JEM" issue and suggests a method that is easy and simple to be controled by anyone. A demo tool was built and tested to find and prove the reasons for "JEM" This test shows that that the case with snap up is less stressful than without to input text as a final result of the test evaluation in both psychological snap up and physiological brain wave test. Postnatal or naturally acquired, it is found that the disabled can have opportunities for smoother communication, and a possible efficient system development for better communication.
We have examined the effects of S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), prostaglandin $E_2$ (PG $E_2$) and dibutric cyclic AMP (dbcAMP) on the methylation of interferon- ${\gamma}$ (IFN- ${\gamma}$ ) gene in human Jurkat T cells. The CpG dinucleotide which is critical for promoter function of IFN- ${\gamma}$ gene was methylated by treatment with SNAP, PG $E_2$ and dbcAMP, respectively. The DNA methylation induced by PG $E_2$ was suppressed by the addition of 2',5'-dideoxyadenosine (DDA), an inhibitor of adenylyl cyclase, but the suppression was not observed in SNAP treated cells. The NO production was not enhanced in PG $E_2$ or dbcAMP treated cells. The methylation induced by PG $E_2$ and dbcAMP was not suppressed by the addition of $N^{G}$-methyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA), NO synthase inhibitor. In conclusion, the inhibition of INF- ${\gamma}$ gene expression by PG $E_2$ was associated with the methylation of INF- ${\gamma}$ gene by elevation of intracellular cAMP in human Jurkat T cells. However, the methylation induced by PG $E_2$ might not be mediated through the NO production.rough the NO production.
The main objective of this study is to develop a dual approach for geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis of plane truss structures. The geometric nonlinearity is considered using the Total Lagrangian formulation. The nonlinear solution is obtained by introducing and minimizing an objective function subjected to displacement-type constraints. The proposed method can fully trace the whole equilibrium path of geometrically nonlinear plane truss structures not only before the limit point but also after it. No stiffness matrix is used in the main approach and the solution is acquired only based on the direct classical stress-strain formulations. As a result, produced errors caused by linearization and approximation of the main equilibrium equation will be eliminated. The suggested algorithm can predict both pre- and post-buckling behavior of the steel plane truss structures as well as any arbitrary point of equilibrium path. In addition, an equilibrium path with multiple limit points and snap-back phenomenon can be followed in this approach. To demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency and robustness of the proposed procedure, numerical results of the suggested approach are compared with theoretical solution, modified arc-length method, and those of reported in the literature.
Purpose: There are various approaches for open reduction surgery for orbitozygomatic fractures. After the incisions are performed, patients might have various complications. In this point of view, we conducted a retrospective study of the usability of infraorbital incision on elderly patients, generally more vulnerable to scleral show and ectropion. Methods: In this study, 20 patients who are relatively more vulnerable to scleral show and ectropion through snap-back test having infraorbital incision were reviewed. We monitored the duration of the surgery, and complications resulted from the incision. We evaluated the scars with the researcher's observations and with the patient's level of satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 5. Results: On average, 5 minutes was spent between the skin incision and the fracture exposure. No case of scleral show and ectropion occurred. One year follow-up observation revealed 4 cases of visible scars, 9 cases of barely visible scars, and 7 cases of invisible scars. The subjective satisfaction level of the patients' scar is an average of 4.0. Conclusion: Infraorbital incision has many advantages. First, it can reduce the complications such as scleral show and ectropion. Second, it can shorten the operation time. Third, it can diminish incision-related scars.
In this paper, an integration framework of Geometric Constraint Solving Engine and AutoCAD is presented, and a dynamic geometric constraint system is introduced. According to inherent orientation features of geometric entities and various Object Snap results of AutoCAD, the' proposed system can automatically construct an under-constrained geometric constraint model during interactive drawing. And then the directed constraint graph in a geometric constraint model is realtime modified in order to produce an optimal constraint solving sequence. Due to the open object-oriented characteristics of AutoCAD, a set of user-defined entities including basic geometric elements and graphics constraint relations are defined through derivation. And the custom-made Object Reactor and Command Reactor are also constructed. Several powerful characteristics are achieved based on these user-defined entities and reactors, including synchronously processing geometric constraint information while saving and opening DWG files, visual constraint relations, and full adaptability to Undo/Redo operations. These characteristics of the proposed system can help the designers more easily manage geometric entities and constraint relations between them.
