MR-TLCD (Magneto-Rheological Tuned Liquid Column Damper) is a new developed vibration control device, which combines the traditional passive control property with active controllability advantage. Based on traditional TLCD governing equation, this study further considers MR-fluid viscosity in the equation and by transforming the non-linear damping term into an equivalent linear damping, a solution can be obtained. In order to find a countable set of parameters for the design of the MR-TLCD system and also to realize its applicability to structures, a series of experimental test were designed and carried out. The testing programs include the basic material properties of the MR-fluid, the damping ratio of a MR-TLCD and the dynamic responses for a frame structure equipped with the MR-TLCD system subjected to strong ground excitations. In both the analytical and experimental results of this study, it is found that the accurately tuned MR-TLCD system could effectively reduce the dynamic response of a structural system.

Electrorheological(ER) fluid is a kind of smart material with variable shear stress and dynamic viscosity under various electric field intensity. Electric field can control the damping characteristics of ER damper. The objective of this study is the analysis of the performance of ER damper and its application to shock absorber. Idealized nonlinear Bingham plastic shear flow model is used to predict the velocity profile between electrodes. Cylindrical dashpot ER damper with moving electrode is constructed and tested under various electric fields. The analytic and experimental results for damping force are compared and discussed. Drop test system using ER damper is prepared to identify transient vibration characteristics. The rebound is eased as the applied electric field increases. When semi-active control algorithm is applied, rebound phenomenon disappears and vibration energy level decays faster than the case of zero electric field.

The objectives of this study were to develop the optimal structures of recirculating aquaculture tank for improving the removal efficiency of solid materials and maintaining water quality conditions. Flow analysis was performed using the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) method to understand the hydrodynamic characteristics of the circular tank according to the angle of inclination in the tank bottom (0°, 1.5° and 3°), circulating water inflow method (underwater, horizontal nozzle, vertical nozzle and combination nozzle) and the number of inlets. As the angle in tank bottom increased, the vortex inside the tank decreased, resulting in a constant flow. In the case of the vertical nozzle type, the eddy flow in the tank was greatly improved. The vertical nozzle type showed excellent flow such as constant flow velocity distribution and uniform streamline. The combination nozzle type also showed an internal spiral flow, but the vortex reduction effect was less than the vertical nozzle type. As the number of inlets in the tank increased, problems such as speed reduction were compensated, resulting in uniform fluid flow.
Over the past decades, a great variety of dampers have been developed and applied to mechanical, aerospace, and civil structures to control structural vibrations. This study is focused on two emerging damper types, namely, eddy current dampers (ECDs) and electromagnetic damper (EMDs), both of which are regarded as promising alternatives to commonly-applied viscous fluid dampers (VFDs) because of their similar mechanical behavior. This study aims to enhance the damping densities of ECDs and EMDs, which are typically lower than those of VFDs, by proposing new designs with multiple improvement measures. The design configurations, mechanisms, and experimental results of the new ECDs and EMDs are presented in this paper. The further comparison based on the experimental results revealed that the damping densities of the proposed ECD and EMD designs are comparable to those of market-available VFDs. Considering ECDs and EMDs are solid-state dampers without fluid leakage problems, the results obtained in this study demonstrate a great prospect of replacing conventional VFDs with the improved ECDs and EMDs in future large-scale applications.

Oil refineries' Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units (FCCU) when in full operation may exhibit strong fluid dynamics caused by turbulent flow in the piping system that may induce vibrations in other mechanical and structural components of the Unity. This paper reports on the experimental-theoretical-computational program performed to get the vibration properties and the dynamic response amplitudes to find out alternative solutions to attenuate the excessive vibrations that were causing fatigue fractures in components of the bottle like reactor-regenerator of an FCC unit in operation in an existing oil refinery in Brazil. Solutions to the vibration problem were sought with the aid of a 3D finite element model calibrated with the results obtained from experimental measurements. A short description of the found solutions is given and their effectiveness are shown by means of numerical results. The solutions were guided by the concepts of structural stiffening and dynamic control performed by a nonlinear pendulum controller whose mechanical design was based on parameters determined by means of a parametric study carried out with 2D and 3D mathematical models of the coupled pendulum-structure system. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is evaluated in terms of the fatigue life of critical welded connections.
The viscosity of a shear-thickening fluid damper (STFD) can increase dramatically when the STFD undergoes high-rate of excitation. Therefore, accurate numerical modelling of the STFD has been considered difficult due to this distinct feature. This study aims to develop a numerical model to accurately simulate the response of the STFD. First, a STFD is designed, fabricated, and installed in the laboratory. Then, performance tests are conducted in which sine waves with nine frequencies at three amplitude levels are adopted as the displacement excitations to the STFD. A novel numerical model which contains two parameter sets of the discrete Bouc-Wen model as well as two parameters for transiting the two parameter sets. Therefore, a total number of eighteen parameters need to be identified in the damper model. The symbiotic organisms search is applied to optimize the parameters. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed STFD model with transit parameter sets outperforms the conventional discrete Bouc-Wen model. The proposed STFD model can be applied to analyses of structures in which STFDs are installed in the future.

In this study, structural vibration analyses of a smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic loads generated by rotating rotor and wakes. The present UAV (TR-S5-03) finite element model is constructed as a full three-dimensional configuration with different fuel conditions and tilting angles for helicopter, transition and airplane flight modes. Practical computational procedure for modal transient response analysis (MTRA) is established using general purpose finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The dynamic loads generated by rotating blades in the transient and forward flight conditions are calculated by unsteady CFD technique with sliding mesh concept. As the results of present study, transient structural displacements and accelerations are presented in detail. In addition, vibration characteristics of structural parts and installed equipments are investigated for different fuel conditions and tilting angles.

Overloaded vehicles increase the maintenance cost of road structures, and they are a major factor in causing damage to the roads and bridges. In addition, overloaded vehicles compromise the braking capability of the vehicle; thus, threatening the safety of the driver. In order to prevent overloading of vehicles, the government is cracking down on the roads by using a device that measures the weight of vehicles. But this process is inconvenient because the place where the equipment is installed is far away from where the cargo is loaded. Due to the limitations of these fixed weighing devices, there is a growing need for technology that can monitor vehicle weight distribution and overload conditions in real time. In this work, we develop an onboard scale that can measure the load (weight) of trucks in real time. The onboard scale consists of high sensors, a signal processing unit, and a display, and it measures the load using height-displacement of the vehicle's leaf spring suspension.

In recent years, the demand for an onboard scale system which can directly monitor load distribution and overload of vehicles has increased. Depending on the suspension type of the vehicle, the onboard scale system could use different types of sensors, such as, angle sensors, pressure sensors, load cells, etc. In the case of a vehicle equipped with leaf spring suspension system, the load of the vehicle is measured by using the deflection or displacement of the leaf spring. Leaf springs have hysteresis characteristics that vary in displacement depending on the load state. These characteristics cause load measurement errors when moving or removing cargoes. Therefore, this study aimed at developing an onboard scale device for cargo vehicles equipped with leaf springs. A sectional modeling method which can reduce measurement errors caused by hysteresis characteristics was also proposed.
