Smart skin, a multi-layer structure of composed of a round shape antenna, was designed and fabricated. Tests and analyses was conducted to study its behavior under compressive loads. It was confirmed that the designed smart skin failed due to premature buckling before compression failure. Numerical prediction of structural behavior of smart skin by MSC.NASTRAN agreed well with experimental data.

Active control of flexural vibrations of smart laminated composite beams has been carried out using piezoceramic sensor/actuator and viscoelastic material. The beams with passive constrained layer damping have been analyzed by formulating the equations of motion through the use of extended Hamilton's principle. The dynamic characteristics such as damping ratio and modal damping of the beam are calculated for various fiber orientations by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity.

SMART Frame is a composite precast concrete structure system to deliver the advantages of both steel frame and reinforced concrete. Many studies have established to date that SMART Frame is more advantageous than conventional frame-type structure in terms of structural stability, constructability, economic viability as well as reduction of construction schedule. However, such studies have focused primarily on wall-type or flat slab-type apartment housing structures, failing to include Rahmen structures in their scope. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the benefits of potential application of SMART Frame to RC Rahmen structures. As the structural stability and constructability of SMART Frame is already proven, this study reviews its benefits from the perspective of cost reduction. Conclusion of this study will be used subsequently in predicting the benefits of SMART Frame when it is adapted to RC Rahmen structures.

Smart material is used in various applications such as for glass frame, for medical instruments and for a part of sensors. Smart composite materials ran be applied to a part of aircraft and to the on-line monitoring system for industrial structures, using the shape memory effect. However, it is very difficult to simulate and analyze the shape memory effect in smart composites. In this paper, a two dimensional axisymmetric model was proposed to analyze the smart composite of one fiber and matrix using the finite element method(FEM). The finite element analysis was carried out in two renditions of the room temperature(293K) and a higher temperature (363K). The results we.e compared with the experimental results to confirm the validity of the analysis. In addition, the acoustic emission(AE) technique was used to study the microscopic damage behavior and the effect of pre-strains on TiNi/A16061 shape memory alloy composite.

This paper presents an efficient architecture that optimizes the design of SEED S-box using composite field arithmetic. SEED is the Korean standard 128-bit block cipher algorithm developed by Korea Information Security Agency. The nonlinear function S-box is the most costly operation in terms. of size and power consumption, taking up more than 30% of the entire SEED circuit. Therefore the S-box design can become a crucial factor when implemented in systems where resources are limited such as smart cards. In this paper, we transform elements in $GF(2^8)$ to composite field $GF(((2^2)^2)^2)$ where more efficient computations can be implemented and transform the computed result back to $GF(2^8)$. This technique reduces the S-box portion to 15% and the entire SEED algorithm can be implemented at 8,700 gates using Samsung smart card CMOS technology.

Active control of forced vibration of the cantilevered laminated composite plates using collocated piezoceramic sensor/actuator is analyzed numerically and verified experimentally for various fiber orientations. Impact on the stiffness and the damping properties is studied by varying stacking sequence of [$\theta$$_{4}$O$_{2}$90$_{2}$]s for the laminated composite plate. For the forced vibration control, the plate is excited by one pair of collocated PZT exciters in resonance and its vibrational response is suppressed by the other collocated PZT sensor/actuator using direct negative velocity feedback. It is shown that the active control of forced vibration is more effective for the smart laminated plate with higher modal damped stiffness(2ζ$\omega$/aup 2/) .

In this research, for the smart health monitoring of the hydrogen storage high pressure composite vessel, the feasibility study of an embedded fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor is carried out. To verify strain measurement in various temperature environment which is needed for the hydrogen pressure vessel, tensile test of a composite specimen with both an embedded FBG sensor and a strain gauge is made in low temperature. Before we try a real-size hydrogen storage pressure vessel, a small & cheap composite pressure vessel having the same structure is fabricated with embedded FBG sensors and tested. In the case of an aluminum liner inside the vessel, survivability of FBG sensors at the interface is lower than the other areas.

In this work, active control algorithm is adopted to reduce delamination effects of the damaged composite structure and control performance with MFC actuator is numerically evaluated. Finite element model for the damaged composite structure with piezoelectric actuator is established based on improved layerwise theory. In order to achieve high control performance, MFC actuator, which has increased actuating force, is considered as a piezoelectric actuator. Mode shapes and corresponding natural frequencies for the damaged smart composite structure are studied. After design and implementation of active controller, dynamic characteristics of the damaged smart composite structure are investigated.

A finite-element model for beams with partially delaminated layers is used to investigate their behavior. In this formulation account is taken of lateral strains and the first-order shear deformation theory is used. Both displacement continuity and force equilibrium conditions are imposed between the regions with and without delamination. Numerical results of the present model are presented and its performance is evaluated for static and dynamic problems.
