  • This research aimed to identify transition process of invigoration project of the small-scale schools and status of promoting project of multi-family housing for rental and vacant housing remodeling in Jeju-do, Korea. The results are followings. First, invigoration project of the small-scale schools had been started in villages communities themselves and was institutionalized to local government. To invigorate the small-scale schools was started vacant housing remodeling first in the village itself from 1992. After twenty years had passed, the project was institutionalized to local government in 2013. Second, to enact ordinances about invigoration project of the small-scale schools is the accomplishment of participations and activities of residents who predicted decreasing the number of students in elementary schools. These activities have influenced their communities positively. Finally, to supply multi-family housing for rental or to remodel vacant housing is more effective in increasing residents through influx of students of elementary schools. The average number of students increased from 56.8 in 2013 to 73 in 2018 in 30 elementary schools targeted for invigoration project of the small-scale schools. In particular, the effect in schools targeted the project of rental housing is shown more than schools targeted the project in vacant housing remodeling. In addition, low ratio in the number of closed school is shown in Jeju-do.

  • Section model test, as the most commonly used method to evaluate the aerostatic and aeroelastic performances of long-span bridges, may be carried out under different conditions of incoming wind speed, geometric scale and wind tunnel facilities, which may lead to potential Reynolds number (Re) effect, model scaling effect and wind tunnel scale effect, respectively. The Re effect and scale effect on aerostatic force coefficients and aeroelastic characteristics of streamlined bridge decks were investigated via 1:100 and 1:60 scale section model tests. The influence of auxiliary facilities was further investigated by comparative tests between a bare deck section and the deck section with auxiliary facilities. The force measurement results over a Re region from about 1×105 to 4×105 indicate that the drag coefficients of both deck sections show obvious Re effect, while the pitching moment coefficients have weak Re dependence. The lift coefficients of the smaller scale models have more significant Re effect. Comparative tests of different scale models under the same Re number indicate that the static force coefficients have obvious scale effect, which is even more prominent than the Re effect. Additionally, the scale effect induced by lower model length to wind tunnel height ratio may produce static force coefficients with smaller absolute values, which may be less conservative for structural design. The results with respect to flutter stability indicate that the aerodynamic-damping-related flutter derivatives 𝘈*2 and 𝐴*1𝐻*3 have opposite scale effect, which makes the overall scale effect on critical flutter wind speed greatly weakened. The most significant scale effect on critical flutter wind speed occurs at +3° wind angle of attack, which makes the small-scale section models give conservative predictions.

  • In this manuscript, the small scale and thermal effects on vibration behavior of preloaded nanobeams with non-ideal boundary conditions are investigated. The boundary conditions are assumed to allow small deflections and moments and the concept of non-ideal boundary conditions is applied to the nonlocal beam problem. Governing equations are derived through Hamilton's principle and then are solved applying Lindstedt-Poincare technique to derive fundamental natural frequencies. The good agreement between the results of this research and those available in literature validated the presented approach. The influence of various parameters including nonlocal parameter, thermal effect, perturbation parameter, aspect ratio and pre-stress load on free vibration behavior of the nanobeams are discussed in details.

  • With the sustainability movement, vegetated building envelopes are gaining more popularity. This requires special wind effect investigations, both from sustainability and resiliency perspectives. The current paper focuses on wind load estimation on small- and full-scale trees used as part of green roofs and balconies. Small-scale wind load assessment was carried out using a wind tunnel testing in a global-effect study to understand the interference effects from surrounding structures. Full-scale trees were investigated at a large open-jet facility in a local-effect study to account for the wind-tree interaction. The effect of Reynolds number combined with shape change on the overall loads measured at the base of the trees (near the roots) has been investigated by testing at different model-scales and wind speeds. In addition, high-speed tests were conducted to examine the security of the trees in soil and to assess the effectiveness of a proposed structural mitigation system. Results of the current research show that at relatively high wind speeds the load coefficients tend to be reduced, limiting the wind loads on trees. No resonance or vortex shedding was visually observed.

  • A linear induction motor for urban railway transit is accompanied with the end-effect and large air-gap comparing with a rotary induction motor. These cause amount of difference between simulation results and experiments. In order to figure out the difference, experiments based on a real-scale test bed are indispensable, however building a test-line and a test vehicle is so difficult that authors are going to make a small-scale model and simulate it for comparison. In this paper, A rotary-type small-scale model of a linear induction motor is designed. Thrust and normal force of the model have been analyzed with the variation of frequency and speed by using a Finite Element Method(FEM).

  • The small-scale models have been utilized for the prediction of inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete structures for several decades. The parameters that affect the similitude between the model and prototype are various. Among them, the effect of bond between the model reinforcement and the model concrete is one of the most important factors. The study reported herein is addressed to verifying this similitude in bond behavior. The simple beams which have the lap splice at the midspan were made and flexural tests were performed under two-point loading. The length of lap splice are varied from 0.4ld through 0.7ld and up to 1.0ld where ld is the development length of the reinforcement. The selected scales are 1/1, 1/5, 1/10 and 1/12. Two prototype specimens and three models were tested in addition to the associated material tests and the test results are compared from the viewpoint of similitude.

  • In this article, free vibration of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNT) based on nonlocal Kelvin's model have been investigated. For this purpose, a nonlocal Kelvin's model is established to observe the small scale effect. The wave propagation is employed to frame the governing equations as eigenvalue system. The influence of nonlocal parameter subjected to different end supports has been overtly examined. The new set of inner and outer tubes radii investigated in detail against aspect ratio. The influence of boundary conditions via nonlocal parameter is shown graphically. Due to small scale effect fundamental frequency ratio decreases as length to diameter ratio increases. Small scale effect becomes negligible on all end supports for the higher values of aspect ratio. With the smaller inner tube radius double-walled CNT behaves more sensitive towards nonlocal parameter. The results generated furnish the evidence regarding applicability of nonlocal model and also verified by earlier published literature.

  • The effects of design parameters for small scale hydro power(SSHP) plants due to climate change have been studied. The model to predict hydrologic performance for SSHP plants is used in this study. The results from analysis far rainfall conditions based on KIER model show that the capacity and load factor of SSHP site had large difference between the period. Especially, the hydrologic performance of SSHP site due to rainfall condition of recent period varied in design flowrate sensitively. However climate change gave small effect in load factor of existing SSHP plant. And also, the methodology represented in this study can be used to decide the primary design specifications of SSHP sites.

  • The high loading combustion is accomplished by making the turbulent intensity strong and the scale small in the premixed combustor. The Da-mkoler number, which is decreased by short turbulent characteristic time or by long chemical reaction time, can make the distributed reaction flame. So we developed a doubled jet burner for high loading combustion. The doubled jet burner was designed to make the scale of the flame small by the effect of impingement and increasing shear stress with doubled jet. We investigated the turbulence characteristics of unburned mixture and visualized several flames with the typical schlieren photography. Then we studied the influence of several factors that related the scale of flame. Consequently, the doubled jet burner can make the eddy very small. And we can obtain the detail information of the flame scale through ADSF(the Average Distance between Successive Fringes) in the micro- schlieren photography. The ADSF is not a exact flame scale, but it has qualitative trend with increasing turbulent intensity. The ADSF is diminished remarkably with increasing turbulent intensity. The reason is that strong turbulent intensity makes the flame zone thick and flamelets numerous. We can confirm this fact by the signal analysis of ion currents.
