  • Vickers hardness is an important material in the design and reliability is required. Therefore, these values are very important as the basic data for design, manufacture and development, and the identification of quantitative probability distribution characteristics such as mean and dispersion is a very important parameter in design. In this study, Vickers hardness was measured after artificially heat-treated in the temperature range 753K, where chrome depletion near the grain boundary occurred for three kinds of stainless steels, and the Vickers hardness were evaluated. From the results, Vickers hardness increased with increasing heat treatment temperature. In Weibull distribution for Vickers hardness, the dispersion of STS310S at 813K and 873K was small, and the dispersion of STS316L at 753K, 933K and 993K was small. Also, STS347H exhibited the lowest dispersion at 753K in three kinds of stainless steels. The scale parameter increased with increasing heat treatment temperature in three kinds of stainless steels.

  • The photovoltaic (PV) power conditioning system for small-scale applications has gained significant interest in the past few decades. However, the standalone mode of operation has been rarely approached. This paper presents a two-stage multi-level micro-inverter topology that considers the different operation modes. A multi-output flyback converter provides both the DC-Link voltage balancing for the multi-level inverter side and maximum power point tracking control in grid connection mode in the PV stage. A modified H-bridge multi-level inverter topology is included for the AC output stage. The multi-level inverter lowers the total harmonic distortion and overall ratings of the power semiconductor switches. The proposed micro-inverter topology can help to decrease the size and cost of the PV system. Transient analysis and controller design of this micro-inverter have been proposed for stand-alone and grid-connected modes. Finally, the system performance was verified using a 120 W hardware prototype.

  • The isothermal forging design of a Ti-6Al-4V wing shape was performed by 3D FE simulation. The design focuses on near-net shape forming by the single stage. The process variables such as the die design, pre-form shape and size, ram speed and forging temperature were investigated. The minimization of forging load and uniform strain distribution in a given forging condition were considered as main design factors. The FE simulation results fur the final process design were compared with the isothermal forging tests. Finally, the modified process design for producing the uniform Ti-6Al-4V wing product without forming defects was suggested.

  • In small-scale water systems, the measurement of quality of raw water in running water is generally implemented when the quality of water is stable and frequency of measurement is low. However, units such as water temperature and pH, which are easily monitored, are frequently measured. In establishing an improvement plan for a water treatment system, the range of concentration of the target material present in the raw water of the running water provides relevant information. If the concentration of target material can be specified by the quality of water of data items that are measured daily, inverse estimation of the range of concentration is possible as well. In this paper, we took note of manganese in the raw water from Ogasawara-mura, Tokyo, and estimated the manganese concentration in the raw water of the running water for the past five years. Based on the results obtained, we have proposed a manganese removal system, considering the current situation and geographical conditions of Ogasawara-mura.

  • As for structural system, which constitutes his construction, there are column inside dimension and span which constitutes plane, and as for constructions for section, there are C.H and slab, and as for constructive factors for envelope, there are window and closing panel of outer wall, and as for opening, there are punching window and wave window. With these constructive parts and opening of envelope, his construction composes volume and mass. The relation of structure and modulor which are shown in his later construction can be divided in two cases that modulor is directly and indirectly adapted for rate and measure calculation of the constructive body. As for indirectly adapted case, we can find it form most of his later construction, it is living place in which human beings life is, and it is adapted mainly for small space. In his construction, he tried to tell human scale and sense of musical rhythm through modulor. In other words, he played sense of space and musical scale by adapting regular and repetitive modulor of opening, and in small space for daily life, he made the size of space into the space which human can perceive. And, if we interpret mudulor in modern meaning, it is an establishment of radius of human act. And, we can make organic and harmonic design of space if we use modulor as origin of human centered measurement calculation, and if we adapt space after dividing by use.

  • This paper summarizes the experimentally-measured performance of small-scale, vertical-axis wind turbine for the purpose of improving the aerodynamic efficiency and its controllability. The turbine is designed to have a Savonius-Type rotor with an inlet guide-vane and an side guide-vane so that it achieves a higher efficiency than any lift- or drag-based turbines. The main design factors for this high-efficient, vertical wind turbine are the number of blades (Z), and the aspect ratio of Height/Diameter (H/D) among many. The basic model has the diameter of 580mm, the height of 464mm, and the blade number of 10. The maximum power coefficient of 0.50 was experimentally measured for the above-mentioned specifications. The inlet-guide vane ensures the maximum efficiency when the angle of attack to the rotor blade lies between $15^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$. This experimental results for the vertical-axis wind turbine can be applied to the preliminary design of turbine output curve based on the wind characteristics at the proposed site by controlling its aerodynamic performance given as a priori.

  • For even distribution of liquid manure in the field, a boom nozzle type spreader was designed and studied to determined its suitability for small scale crop production farms. Boom nozzle type spreader was compared in the impact triple nozzle and impact single nozzle type spreader. Spreading uniformity of the boom nozzle type liquid manure spreader showed 5.2% (C.V.) and impact single nozzle type spreader showed 6.9% (C.V.). The spreading uniformity of the impact triple nozzle type spreader was quite uneven, therefore, the spreader could be modified as twin nozzle for spreading in orchard farm. The wheel axle height adjustable type liquid manure spreader has higher the stability and it considered much useful on the hilly agricultural land.

  • Background: Asarum sieboldii Miq., a species of forest understory vegetation, is an herbaceous perennial belonging to the family Aristolochiaceae. The metapopulation of A. sieboldii is distributed sparsely and has a short seed dispersal distance by ants as their seed distributor. It is known that many flowers of A. sieboldii depend on self-fertilization. Because these characteristics can affect negatively in genetic structure, investigating habitat structure and assessment of genetic structure is needed. A total of 27 individuals in a valley were sampled for measuring genetic diversity, genetic distance, and genetic differentiation by RAPDPCR. Results: The habitat areas of A. sieboldii metapopulation were relatively small (3.78~33.60 m2) and population density was very low (five to seven individuals in 20×20 m quadrat). The habitat of A. sieboldii was a very shady (relative light intensity = 0.9%) and mature forest with a high evenness value (J = 0.81~0.99) and a low dominance value (D = 0.19~0.28). The total genetic diversity of A. sieboldii was quite high (h = 0.338, I = 0.506). A total of 33 band loci were observed in five selected primers, and 31 band loci (94%) were polymorphic. However, genetic differentiation along the valley was highly progressed (Gst = 0.548, Nm = 0.412). The average genetic distance between subpopulations was 0.387. The results of AMOVA showed 52.77% of variance occurs among populations, which is evidence of population structuring. Conclusions: It is expected that a small-scale founder effect had occurred, an individual spread far from the original subpopulation formed a new subpopulation. However, geographical distance between individuals would have been far and genetic flow occurred only within each subpopulation because of the low density of population. This made significant genetic distance between the original and new population by distance. Although genetic diversity of A. sieboldii metapopulation is not as low as concerned, the subpopulation of A. sieboldii can disappear by stochastic events due to small subpopulation size and low density of population. To prevent genetic isolation and to enhance the stable population size, conservative efforts such as increasing the size of each subpopulation or the connection between subpopulations are needed.

  • Vapor explosion is one of the most important problems encountered in severe accident management of nuclear power plants. In spite of many efforts, a lot of questions still remain for the fundamental understanding of vapor explosion phenomena. Therefore, KAERI launched a real material experiment called TROI using 20 kg of UO2 and ZrO2 to investigate the vapor explosion phenomena. In addition, a small-scale experiment with molten-tin/water system was performed to quantify the characteristics of vapor explosion and to understand the phenomenology of vapor explosion. A number of instruments were used to measure the physical change occurring during the vapor explosion. In this experiment, the vapor explosion generated by molten fuel water interaction is visualized using high speed camera and the pressure behavior accompanying the explosion is investigated.
