Small dose of naloxone as an adjuvant to bupivacaine in intrapleural infiltration after thoracotomy surgery: a prospective, controlled study

  • Background: Severe pain always develops after thoracotomy; intrapleural regional analgesia is used as a simple, safe technique to control it. This study was performed to evaluate whether a small dose of naloxone with local anesthetics prolongs sensory blockade. Methods: A prospective, randomized double-blinded controlled study was conducted on 60 patients of American Society of Anesthesiologists statuses I and II, aged 18 to 60 years, scheduled for unilateral thoracotomy surgery. After surgery, patients were randomly divided into two groups: through the intrapleural catheter, group B received 30 ml of 0.5% bupivacaine, while group N received 30 ml of 0.5% bupivacaine with 100 ng of naloxone. Postoperative pain was assessed using the visual analog pain scale (VAS). Time for the first request for rescue analgesia, total amount consumed, and incidence of postoperative complications were also recorded. Results: The VAS score significantly decreased in group N, at 6 h and 8 h after operation (P < 0.001 for both). At 12 h after injection, the VAS score increased significantly in group N (P < 0.001). The time for the first request of rescue analgesia was significantly longer in group N compared to group B (P < 0.001). The total amount of morphine consumed was significantly lower in group N than in the bupivacaine group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Addition of a small dose of naloxone to bupivacaine in intrapleural regional analgesia significantly prolonged pain relief after thoracotomy and delayed the first request for rescue analgesia, without significant adverse effects.

Evaluation of Quality Characteristics for Gochujang Produced by Small- and Medium-scale Manufacturers (전국 중소업체 생산 고추장의 품질 특성 평가)

  • To improve the standardized quality of gochujang produced by major companies, the quality characteristics of 29 gochujang samples produced by regional small- and medium-scale manufacturers were determined. The average moisture content, crude protein content, pH, acidity, and salinity of gochujang from regional manufacturers were found to be 34.32-45.53%, 5.07-5.68%, 4.61-4.92, 3.30-3.72%, and 9.93-16.14%, respectively. The contents of reducing sugar, amino type N, and capsaicinoids were found to be 16.81-29.81%, 191.72-660.55 mg%, and 32.49-79.58 mg/kg, respectively, and the ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-amylase activity were 2.52-4.15 and 26.36-36.47 U/g, respectively. These values varied significantly across regional manufacturers. In addition, overall, gochujang had a range of 23.93-55.64% moisture content, 4.01-7.30% crude protein content, 105.47-1092.00 mg% amino type N content, and 8.74-181.50 mg/kg capsaicinoid content. These results indicate that the quality characteristics of gochujang showed a wide distribution but met the Korean Industrial Standards. Therefore, these data can be used for quality control of gochujang.

Dynamic Respiratory Measurements of Corynebacterium glutamicum using Membrane Mass Spectormetry

  • The present work presents a novel approach for the dynamic quantification of respiration rates on a small scale by using lysine-producing Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 21253. Cells sampeld from batch cultures at different times were incubated ina 12-ml scale bioreactor equipped with a membrane mass spectrometer. Under dynamic conditions, gas exchange across the gas-liquid phase, specific respiration rates, and RQ values were precisely measured. For this purpose, suitable mass balances were formulated. The transport coefficients for $O_2$ and $CO_2$, crucial for calculating the respiration activity, were determined as $k_La_{O2}=9.18h^{-1}$ and $k_La_{CO2}=5.10h^{-1}$ at 400 rpm. The application of the proposed method to batch cultures of C. glutamicum ATCC 21253 revealed the maximum specific respiration rates of $q_{O2}=8.4\;mmol\;g^{-1}h^{-1}\;and\;q_{CO2}=8.7\;mmol\;g^{-1}h^{-1}$ in the middle of the exponential growth phase after 5 h of cultivation. When the cells changed from growth to lysine production due to the depletion of the essential amino acids theonine, methionine, and leucine, $q_{O2}\;and\;q_{CO2}$ decreased significantly and RQ increased. The respiration data exhibited an excellent agreement with previous cultivations of the strain [13]. This confirms the potential of the developed approach to realistically reflect the metabolic activities of cells at their point of sampling. The short-term influence of added threonine, methionine, and leucine was highest during the shift from growth to lysine production, where $q_{O2}\;and\;q_{CO2}$ increased 50% within one minute after the pulse addition of these compounds. Non-growing, yet lysine-producing cells taken from the end of the batch cultivation revealed no metabolic stimulation with the addition of threonine, methionine, and leucine.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence that how does contact surface between concrete and steel influence the steel encased composite column by push-out test. Also nominal bond stress indicated by design standard such as Eurocode 4 is underestimated in small scale steel encased composite column. The other objective of this study is to investigate how does the number and space of shear connector influence the H-shaped steel encased composite column. The shear behavior of shear connectors is investigated by push-out test.

  • A very long test track is required for high-speed operation test of the real-scale Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) for ultra-high-speed trains. The required length results in huge construction cost and economic loss if any error occurs during development. Therefore, validation study of the LSM design technology using a low-cost small-scale model must be carried out in the early research stages. It is possible to deduce an optimal winding method for the armature and determine the mechanical properties of the LSM through a performance tester that applies a rotary-type small-scale LSM model. In addition, it is possible to utilize previous research on LSM control systems. Therefore, a basic design model, comprising a rotary-type LSM tester that meets the requirements for the propulsion of 600km/h-class ultra-high-speed trains, is derived in this study. Finally, an optimal model, which has a stable structure under the condition of 1500rpm or more high-speed rotation, is derived by electromagnetic and mechanical stiffness analysis.

Physico-Chemical and Sensory Properties of Commercial Korean Traditional Soy Sauce of Mass-Produced vs. Small Scale Farm Produced in the Gyeonggi Area (한식 간장의 이화학 및 관능적 특성 - 대기업 시판 제품과 경기지역 소규모 농가 생산 제품의 비교 -)

  • The core ingredient of traditional Korean style soy sauce is soy bean without any wheat or rice incorporated. National brands as well as regional micro-brewed companies constitute the soy sauce market in Korea. The present study investigated the physico-chemical and sensory properties of soy sauces produced by small-scale or mass-production. Additionally, the key physico-chemical parameters sufficiently representing the critical sensory characteristics have been identified. Ten types of soy sauce brewed by the Korean traditional method were selected for the study. Among these samples, seven types were brewed in small-scales in the Gyeonggi-do region whereas the other 3 types were mass-production products of major national brands. The total solid, reducing sugar, salinity, sugar content, amino nitrogen, CIELAB, acidity, and pH of soy sauce samples were measured for the physico-chemical analysis. A generic descriptive analysis was conducted to analyze the sensory characteristics of the samples using six trained panelists. The descriptive panel developed 21 sensory attributes. The data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA, PCA and PLSR. Overall, the micro-brewed products showed significantly higher value of salinity and acidity but lower content of reducing sugar than the mass-production products. The micro-brewed soy sauces elicited stronger fermented flavor, sourness, and bitterness whereas the national brand products elicited stronger alcoholic odor, sweetness and umami taste. Sugar content, acidity, and amino nitrogen showed strong relationships with fish sauce flavor, umami taste, and rich flavor. Salinity was closely related to the overall flavor intensity.

  • Wind tunnel pressure measurements and numerical simulations based on the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) are compared with full and model scale data in the flow area of impingement, separation and wake for $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ wind azimuth angles. The phase averaged fluctuating pressures simulated by the RSM model are combined with modelling of the small scale, random pressure field to produce the total, instantaneous pressures. Time averaged, rsm and peak pressure coefficients are consequently calculated. This numerical approach predicts slightly better the pressure field on the roof of the TTU (Texas Tech University) building when compared to the wind tunnel experimental results. However, it shows a deviation from both experimental data sets in the impingement and wake regions. The limitations of the RSM model in resolving the intermittent flow field associated with the corner vortex formation are discussed. Also, correlations between the largest roof suctions and the corner vortex "switching phenomena" are observed. It is inferred that the intermittency and short duration of this vortex switching might be related to both the wind tunnel and numerical simulation under-prediction of the peak roof suctions for oblique wind directions.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) effects on physical properties of the liquid crystal and twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal (LC) cells have been investigated. The minute doping of CNTs reduces rotational viscosity of the LC, and thus switching time of the TN cells is improved, especially in grey scale response time. In addition, the dielectric anisotropy and birefringence are not affected by such a small amount of CNT-doping and thus voltage-dependent transmittance remains the same.

  • Evaluations of the fish farm influences on stream water quality may provide basic informations on watershed management to reduce environmental impact due to fish farm development and to conserve stream water quality in forested watershed area. In this research influent, effluent water in the fish farm and stream water qualities around Mt. Baegun area were monitored seasonally for six years and the following results were obtained. Due to the increase of pH in effluent water from the fish farm it was believed that alkalization of stream water can be accelerated by large scale development of fish farms in the forested watershed area. Also, effluent water from the fish farm increase of EC higher than influent and stream water. As a result of regression analyses, pH, EC, DO, water temperature, total amount of cation and anion in influent and effluent water of fish farm show high significance.

  • The genus Halectinosoma Vervoort, 1962 is first reported from Korean waters by the discovery of H. perforatum $It{\hat{o}}$, 1981. This species, previously recorded only from Japan, is collected from the sandy beach on the south coast of Korea, and is well distinguished from other congeners by the combination of following morphological characteristics: the elongate caudal ramus; the remarkably bilobated exopod of female P5; the small innermost seta on the distal margin of female P5 exopod; the presence of three setae on the distal exopodal segment in P4; and the presence of scale-like spinules on the ventral surfaces of urosomite. We herein provide detailed description and illustrations of this species.
