  • Most of modern wind turbines employs a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) system because it has many advantages due to variable-speed operation, relatively high efficiency and it small converter size. The DFIG system uses a wound rotor induction machine so that the magnetizing current of the generator can be fed from both the stator and the rotor. This paper presents a protection relaying algorism for DFIG using the DQ equivalent circuits. The induced voltages calculated from the stator and rotor sides are nearly the same in the steady state. They become different in the DQ equivalent circuits during an internal fault. The proposed algorithm compares the inducted voltages estimated from the stator and the rotor circuit converted into the stationary reference frame. If the difference between the induced voltages exceeds the threshold, the proposed algorithm detects an turn-to-turn fault.

  • A cylindrical structure has a very long period of heave and pitch motion response in ocean waves. To obtain the dynamic stability of a cylindrical structure, it is necessary to obtain the suitable metacentric height (GM). However, in a structure with sufficient metacentric height, Mathieu instability can occur if the natural frequency of the heave motion is double the natural frequency of the roll and pitch motion. This study carried out numerical calculations and experiments for vertical-axis wind turbines with cylindrical floaters, which had three different centers of gravity. In the regular wave experiment, the divergence of the structure motion without yaw was observed when the natural frequency of the heave motion was double the natural frequency of the roll and pitch motion. In the irregular wave experiment, the motion spectra of the structures with the different centers of gravity were compared, and one was very high when the natural frequency of the heave motion was double the natural frequency of the roll and pitch motion.

  • The size of commercial wind turbines has been increased. Generally, the pitch control is used to increase the efficiency of wind turbine. However, the pitch control has difficulty to control the local unsteady flow control which makes fatigue load and decreases the efficiency. In this research, Synthetic Jet Actuators(SJAs) are manufactured and applied into a wing section to delay flow separation and increase aerodynamic performances. The SJAs as a kind of zero-net mass-flux actuators injects and removes fluid through a small orifice with a given frequency. The SJA modules actuated by piezoelectric disks are manufactured and the aerodynamic performances are measured according to the shape of the orifice and the velocity of the jets through the wind tunnel test. It is confirmed that as the velocity of the jets are increased using rectangular shape orifice, drag force is decreased and lift force in increased.

  • The purpose is to evaluate the structural characteristics of 750 mm diameter injection spiral blades under various operating conditions. A fiber-glass reinforced polypropylene material was employed to the injection blades, and mechanical tests on two kinds of glass-reinforced polypropylene were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties and to select a suitable candidate material. Also, three kinds of spiral blade geometries were studied to observe the influence of fixing rods between blades. For this, structural analyses were conducted to understand the role of fixing rods under a range of rotating speed. In addition, modal analysis was performed to confirm the resonance in the operating speed range. One-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis was carried out to know its mechanical integrity under dangerous wind speed conditions. Through this work, the structural characteristics of the proposed spiral blade geometries were studied under various operating conditions, and the requirements of mechanical properties of blades were determined.

  • In remote islands, due to expense of existing generation systems, installation of photovoltaic cells (PVs) and wind turbines has a chance of reducing generation costs. However, in island power systems, even short-term power fluctuations change the frequency of grids because of their small inertia constant. In order to compensate power fluctuations, the authors proposed the power consumption control of pumps which send water to tanks. The power control doesn’t affect water users’ convenience as long as tanks hold water. Based on experimental characteristics of a pump system, this paper shows methods to determine reference power consumption of the system with compensation for short-term PV fluctuations while satisfying water demand. One method uses a PI controller and the other method calculates reference power consumption from water flow reference. Simulations with a PV and a pump system are carried out to find optimum parameters and to compare the methods. Results show that both PI control method and water flow calculation method are useful for satisfying the water demand constraint. The water demand constraint has a little impact to suppression of the short-term power fluctuation in this condition.

  • Most of the small wind turbines are set as the stand alone type in the area where the access to the grid is difficult and compulsorily uses the battery. Depending on the volume of the battery, securing of the space necessary, and has the shortcoming of replacing the battery periodically due to it's limited working life span. Recently, setting up in the vicinity of the city area is increasing and the trend of using the Grid inverter instead of battery is also increasing. This thesis is aiming mainly analyzing the characteristics of the output power of the Prototype Permanent Magnet Generator(PMG) and the Grid-Inverter and to verify through the theoretical study and tests. Tested the characteristics of the output power of the PMG through the stage 1-2 and at the stage 3 connected the output of the PMG to the Inverter and tested the characteristics of the Inverter. And at the stage 4, the maximum output power is confirmed by the continuous running test of the PMG.

  • Most modern wind turbines employ a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) system due to its many advantages, such as variable speed operation, relatively high efficiency, and small converter size. The DFIG system uses a wound rotor induction machine so that the magnetizing current of the generator can be fed from both the stator and the rotor. We propose a protection algorithm for a DFIG based on a d-q equivalent circuit in the time domain. In the DFIG, the voltages and currents of the rotor side and the stator side are available. The proposed algorithm estimates the instantaneous induced voltages of magnetizing inductance using those voltages and currents from both the stator and the rotor sides. If the difference between the two estimated induced voltages exceeds the threshold, the proposed algorithm detects an internal fault. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified under various operating and fault conditions using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator.

  • The superconducting synchronous generator is one of the breakthrough elements for direct-drive wind turbines because it is light and small. Normally the superconducting one has copper armature windings in the stator and superconducting field windings on the rotor. The high resistance of the armature can make large copper losses, comparing with the conventional generators with a gear box. One of the solutions for the large copper losses could be a fully superconducting generator. But the high magnetic fields from the superconducting field windings on the rotor also make high perpendicular magnetic fields on the superconducting tapes in the armature windings. We have proposed a fully superconducting synchronous generator with dual field windings. It could immensely decrease the circumferential component of the magnetic field from the field windings at the armature windings. In this paper, we conceptually designed 3 types of superconducting synchronous generators. The first one is the fully superconducting one with conventional structure, which has superconducting armature windings in the stator and superconducting field windings on the rotor. The second one is the one with dual superconducting field windings and superconducting armature windings between them. The last one is the same as the third one except the structure of the armature. If the concentrated armature windings are superconducting ones with cryostats, then they cannot be installed within the span of 2 poles. So, we adopted 3 phases windings within 4 poles system. It makes more AC losses but can be manufactured really.

  • Traditionally, electric power systems have been known as the centralized structures, which is organized into placing customers at the end of the supply chain. However, recent decades have witnessed the emergence of distributed energy resources(:DERs) such as rooftop solar, farming PV system, small wind turbines, battery energy storage systems and smart home appliances. With the emergence of distributed energy resources, the role of distributed system operators(:DSOs) will expand. The increasing penetration of DERs could lead to a less predictable and reverse flow of power in the system, which can affect the traditional planning and operation of distribution and transmission networks. This raises the need for a change in the role of the DSOs that have conventionally planned, maintained and managed networks and supply outages. The objective of this research is to designed the future distribution operation system with multi-DERs and the proposed distribution system model is implemented by hardware-in-the-loop simulation(HILS). The test results show the normal operation domain and reduction of distribution line loss.
