Displacement-based design approach for highway bridges with SMA isolators

  • As a practical and effective seismic resisting technology, the base isolation system has seen extensive applications in buildings and bridges. However, a few problems associated with conventional lead-rubber bearings have been identified after historical strong earthquakes, e.g., excessive permanent deformations of bearings and potential unseating of bridge decks. Recently the applications of shape memory alloys (SMA) have received growing interest in the area of seismic response mitigation. As a result, a variety of SMA-based base isolators have been developed. These novel isolators often lead to minimal permanent deformations due to the self-centering feature of SMA materials. However, a rational design approach is still missing because of the fact that conventional design method cannot be directly applied to these novel devices. In light of this limitation, a displacement-based design approach for highway bridges with SMA isolators is proposed in this paper. Nonlinear response spectra, derived from typical hysteretic models for SMA, are employed in the design procedure. SMA isolators and bridge piers are designed according to the prescribed performance objectives. A prototype reinforced concrete (RC) highway bridge is designed using the proposed design approach. Nonlinear dynamic analyses for different seismic intensity levels are carried out using a computer program called "OpenSees". The efficacy of the displacement-based design approach is validated by numerical simulations. Results indicate that a properly designed RC highway bridge with novel SMA isolators may achieve minor damage and minimal residual deformations under frequent and rare earthquakes. Nonlinear static analysis is also carried out to investigate the failure mechanism and the self-centering ability of the designed highway bridge.

  • Mechanical characteristics of composite materials containing NiTi shape memory alloy(SMA) have been analyzed in this study by conducting tensile, photo-elasticity and impact tests for the specimens. From the test results, the SMA composite materials can be considered as one of possible ways in detecting and controlling damages in the materials.

Position Control of Shape Memory Alloy Actuators Using Self Tuning Fuzzy PID Controller

  • Shape Memory Alloy(SMA) actuators, which have the ability to return to a predetermined shape when heated, have many potential applications such as aeronautics, surgical tools, robotics and so on. Although the conventional PID controller can be used with slow response systems, there has been limited success in precise motion control of SMA actuators, since the systems are disturbed by unknown factors beside their inherent nonlinear hysteresis and changes in the surrounding environment of the systems. This paper presents a new development of a SMA position control system by using a self-tuning fuzzy PID controller. This control algorithm is used by tuning the parameters of the PID controller thereby integrating fuzzy inference and producing a fuzzy adaptive PID controller, which can then be used to improve the control performance of nonlinear systems. The experimental results of position control of SMA actuators using conventional and self-tuning fuzzy PID controllers are both included in this paper.

  • 반응기의 performance를 결정하는 중요한 요소는 methane 생성균의 활성을 측정하는 것이다. Methanogen의 활성을 측정하는 방법으로 SMA가 유일하게 사용되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 methanogen의 활성을 측정하는 다른 대안으로 CLSM image의 정량 분석 방법을 확립하였다. CLSM의 결과는 약 5시간 안에 얻을 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 분자 생물학적인 기술을 많이 요하지 않는다. 또한, sludge내부의 상태와 methanogen의 분포정도를 사진으로 볼 수 있는 장점이 있다. 따라서 SMA와 함께 CLSM image 정량 분석은 UASB반응기의 start-up 동안의 methanogen의 활성을 측정하기 위한 유용한 방법으로 제안할 수 있다.

  • Thermo-mechanical behavior of discontinuous shape memory alloy(SMA) reinforced polymeric composite has been studied using modified shear lag theory and finite element(FE) analysis with 2-D multi-fiber model. The aligned and staggered models of short-fiber arrangement are employed. The effects of fiber overlap and aspect ratio on the thermomechanical responses such as the thermal expansion coefficient are investigated. It is found that the increase of both tensile stress(resistance stress) in SMA fiber and compressive stress in polymer matrix with increasing aspect ratio is the main cause of low thermal deformation of the composite.

수도권 대기 미세먼지 1999-2008년 추이 분석 (Analysis of the trend of atmospheric PM10 concentration over the Seoul Metropolitan Area between 1999 and 2008)

  • The trend of the PM10 concentrations in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) is reviewed and relative contributions of major contributors (paved road emissions and long-range transport from outside the SMA) are discussed. It was shown that the PM10 concentrations in the SMA have generally decreased except Incheon between 1999 and 2005. Further, it was identified that the difference of the PM10 mass concentration between the roadside stations and urban ambient stations has decreased between 2004 and 2008. Based on the emission estimates, it was suggested that the reduction of resuspension of aerosols on the road is the major reason for that. Based on the modeling results, it was identified that outside effects be about 30% of the ambient PM10 concentration in the SMA. Further research and policy issues to identify major sources of PM10 in the SMA are discussed.

  • 본 연구에서는 형상기억합금 작동기의 열-기계적 특성과 구조물의 응용을 살펴보았다. Lagoudas 모델을 기본으로 3-D 형상기억합금의 구성방정식을 FORTRAN으로 해석 알고리즘을 만들어 user material(UMAT) subroutine을 개발하였다. 개발된 형상기억합금 해석 UMAT subroutine을 상용 프로그램 ABAQUS와 연계 해석하여 형상기억합금 작동기와 주 구조물간의 상호 특성을 수치적으로 살펴보았다.

  • A SMA actuator fabricated in this paper generates the large force and it's structure is very simple. The SMA actuator was fabricated by small size with diameter of 4mm and length of 38mm and also it's actuations toward all the directions can be acquired because of three SMA springs which was fabricated with diameter of 1.2mm and 30 turns. We showed into applicability to smart catheter by analyzing accurately the dynamic characteristics such as heading angle, bending angle, force, displacement. For verifying control capacity of the fuzzy controller, we compared Fuzzy controller with PID controller by simulation.

형상기억합금 Underactuated 로봇 핸드의 설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on Design of Underactuated Robot Hand driven by Shape Memory Alloy)

  • The lightweight and compact actuator with high power is required to perform motion with multiple degrees of freedom. To reduce the size and inertia of a robot manipulator, the mechanical transmission system is used. The shape memory alloy(SMA) is similar to the muscle-tendon-bone network of a human hand. However, there are some drawback and nonlinearity, such as the hysteresis and the stress dependence. In this paper, the design of the underactuated robot hand is studied. The 3-finger dexterous hand is driven by the SMA actuator using segmental mechanism. This digital approach enables to overcome the nonlinearity of SMA wire. The translational displacement of SMA actuator required to bend a phalanx of the underactuated robot hand is estimated and the bending angle of the underactuated robot hand according to input displacement of SMA actuator is predicted by the multi-body dynamic analysis.

  • This paper presents the design, modelling and, simulation and experimental results of a shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator based critical motion control application. Dynamic performance of SMA and its ability in replacing servo motor is studied for which the famous open loop unstable balancing ball and beam system direct driven by antagonistic SMA is designed and developed. Simulation uses the mathematical model of ball and beam structure derived from the first principles and model estimated for the SMA actuator by system identification. A PID based cascade control system consisting of two loops is designed and control of ball trajectory for various target positions with settling time as control parameter is verified experimentally. The results demonstrate the performance of SMA for a complicated i.e., under actuated, highly nonlinear unstable system, and thereby it's dynamic behaviour. Control strategies bring out the effectiveness of the actuator and its possible application to much more complex applications such as in aerospace control and robotics.
