Morphing Wing Mechanism Using an SMA Wire Actuator

  • In general, a conventional flap on an aircraft wing can reduce the aerodynamic efficiency due to geometric discontinuity. On the other hand, the aerodynamic performance can be improved by using a shape-morphing wing instead of a separate flap. In this research, a new flap morphing mechanism that can change the wing shape smoothly was devised to prevent aerodynamic losses. Moreover, a prototype wing was fabricated to demonstrate the morphing mechanism. A shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuator was used for the morphing wing. The specific current range was measured to control the SMA actuator. The deflection angles at the trailing edge were also measured while various currents were applied to the SMA actuator. The trailing edge of the wing changed smoothly when the current was applied. Moreover, the deflection angle also increased as the current increased. The maximum frequency level was around 0.1 Hz. The aerodynamic performance of the deformed airfoil by the SMA wire was analyzed by using the commercial program GAMBIT and FLUENT. The results were compared with the results of an undeformed wing. It was demonstrated that the morphing mechanism changes the wing shape smoothly without the extension of the wing skin.

A Comparative Study on Pavement Techniques for Steel Bridge Decks (강상판형교 교면포장 공법 비교 연구)

  • The main purpose of this research is to propose advanced bridge-decks surfacing from the examples of In-Cheon bridge with Guss asphalt and Gyul-Hyeon bridge with stone matrix asphalt(SMA) concrete. The research results presented that the Guss asphalt concrete pavement was weak when rutting was developed due to the low resistance at high temperatures. The SMA concrete pavement demonstrated good resistance to plastic deformations and was easy to maintain pavement conditions. The results mentioned above are generalized in developed counties where surfacing pavement techniques for steel bridge-decks are advanced. However, due to the lack of construction experiences in Korea, appropriate construction guidelines and organized research for the steel bridge deck pavements are necessary for more advanced steel bridge decks surfacing.

Development of SMA-based Wireframe Structure for 2D Shape Display (2차원 형상 제시를 위한 SMA에 기반한 와이어프레임 구조의 개발)

  • This paper proposes a novel method of 2 dimensional shape display. Shape displays allow us to feel tile actual volume of the object, unlike conventional 2D visual displays of 3D objects. The proposed method employs a wireframe structure to present 2D or 3D objects. The wireframe is composed of small units driven by shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators. The drive unit is analogous to the agonist-antagonist system of animal musculoskeletal systems, where the SMA actuators serve as agonist and antagonist muscles. The force in the SMA actuator is controlled by electrical current. The drive unit is equipped with the locking mechanism so that it can sustain the external force exerted by the user as well as the own weight of the wireframe structure. By controlling the current into the SMA actuator and locking mechanism, we can control the angle of the drive unit. A chain of drive units enables presentation of 2 dimensional objects. 3 dimensional presentations are possible by collecting the chains of drive units.

Comparison of Three Land Cover Classification Algorithms -ISODATA, SMA, and SOM - for the Monitoring of North Korea with MODIS Multi-temporal Data

  • The objective of this research was to investigate the optimal land cover classification algorithm for the monitoring of North Korea with MODIS multi-temporal data based on monthly phenological characteristics. Three frequently used land cover classification algorithms, ISODATA1), SMA2), and SOM3) were employed for this study; the land cover categories were forest, grass, agricultural, wetland, barren, built-up, and water body. The outcomes of the study can be summarized as follows. First, the overall classification accuracy of ISODATA, SMA, and SOM was 69.03%, 64.28%, and 73.57%, respectively. Second, ISODATA and SMA resulted in a higher classification accuracy of forest and agricultural categories, but SOM performed better for the built-up area, bare soil, grassland, and water. A possible explanation for this difference would be related to the difference of sensitivity against the vegetation activity. This would be related to the capability of SOM to express all of their values without any loss of data by maintaining the topology between pixels of primitive data after classification, while ISODATA and SMA retain limited amount of data after normalization process. Third, we can conclude that SOM is the best algorithm for monitoring the land cover change of North Korea.

Earthquake effect on the concrete walls with shape memory alloy reinforcement

  • Literature regarding concrete walls reinforced by super elastic shape memory alloy (SMA) bars is rather limited. The seismic behavior of a system concurrently including a distinct steel reinforced concrete (RC) wall, as well as another wall reinforced by super elastic SMA at the first story, and steel rebar at upper stories, would be an interesting matter. In this paper, the seismic response of such a COMBINED system is compared to a conventional system with steel RC concrete walls (STEEL-Rein.) and also to a wall system with SMA rebar at the first story and steel rebar at other stories ( SMA-Rein.). Nonlinear time history analysis at maximum considered earthquake (MCE) and design bases earthquake (DBE) levels is conducted and the main responses like maximum inter-story drift ratio and residual inter-story drift ratio are investigated. Furthermore, incremental dynamic analysis is used to accomplish probabilistic seismic studies by creating fragility curves. Results demonstrated that the SMA-Rein. system, subjected to DBE and MCE ground motions, has almost zero and 0.27% residual maximum inter-story drifts, while the values for the COMBINED system are 0.25% and 0.51%. Furthermore, fragility curves show that using SMA rebar at the base of all walls causes a larger probability of exceedance 3% inter-story drift limit state compared to the COMBINED system. Static push over analysis demonstrated that the strength of the COMBINED model is almost 0.35% larger than that of the two other models, and its general post-yielding stiffness is also approximately twice the corresponding stiffness of the two other models.

Synthetic Hydrogel as an Implant Material with Enhanced Biocompatibility and Biostability (생체적합성 및 생체안정성이 향상된 이식용 합성 수화젤)

  • Hydrogels with enhanced biocompatibility and biostability were prepared by copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and sodium methacrylate (SMA) at high monomer concentration to replace a sponge which has limited applications as an implant material. It was found that incorporation of SMA moiety suppressed cytotoxicity. P(HEMA-co-SMA) hydrogel prepared at SMA feed ratio of 0.05 showed minimal cytotoxicity as compared with a normal cell culture plate. The adhesion and the spreading of cells were preferred on the surface of the hydrogel prepared with SMA feed ratio of 0.01. On the other hand, the hydrogel prepared with SMA feed ratio of 0.05 showed lower cell adhesion. Histological findings revealed no evidence of significant foreign body reaction in the tissues around the copolymer hydrogels. Conclusively, it is suggested that the hydrogels prepared by copolymerization of HEMA and SMA at high monomer concentration are strong candidates for an implant material with excellent biocompatibility and biostability.

The Impact of Internal Migration on Wage Growth among College Graduates (지역이동이 대졸자의 임금 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper examines the impact of internal migration on wage growth among college graduates using Propensity Score Matching methods. We define migration as moving between Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) and non-SMA based on the locations of graduates' first and second jobs. We also take the direction of migration into account for examining the wage premium in SMA. In order to estimate the impact of migration on wage growth, we use the Graduate Occupational Mobility Survey (2010GOMS) coupled with other supplementary data such as College Scholastic Ability Test score and local characteristic variables. The results reveals that graduates moving from SMA to non-SMA do not experience significant wage growth. However, we find that graduates moving from non-SMA to SMA experience an increase in their monthly wage about 170,000~186,000 KRW on average (9.5~10.3% of their monthly wage on the first job).

Endovascular Stent Placement in a Patient with a Posttraumatic Isolated Superior Mesenteric Artery Dissection with Focally Progressing Dissecting Aneurysms and a Severely Compressed True Lumen (외상 후 단독 상장간막동맥박리 후에 국소적으로 진행된 박리성 동맥류와 심한 진강의 압박이 있는 환자에서 혈관내 스텐트설치술 1례)

  • Reports on a posttraumatic isolated superior mesenteric artery (SMA) dissection are rare. Recently, endovascular stent placement via percutaneous access, instead of vascular surgery, has been widely accepted as the initial treatment for a patient with an isolated SMA dissection or its complications. A 60-year-old female patient was transferred to our hospital due to an isolated SMA dissection after a car accident. The SMA dissection was 8.5 cm in length, and it involved the true lumen, which was severely compressed by the thrombosed false lumen. The patient was closely observed because she did not complain of any specific visceral pain. On the seventh hospital day, she underwent computed tomography (CT) to decide on a further treatment plan, irrespective of the presence of the abdominal symptom. The findings of the follow-up CT showed no difference compared to those of the previous CT. She was discharged with anti-coagulants. One month later, the follow-up CT revealed focally progressing dissecting aneurysms in the false lumen of the dissected SMA and a more severely compressed true lumen. Two self-expandable metallic stents were successfully placed in the true lumen of the dissected SMA, covering two aneurysmal lesions. Herein, we report a successful endovascular treatment with stent placement for treating focally progressing dissecting aneurysms and a severely compressed true lumen in a patient with a posttraumatic isolated SMA dissection.

PM2.5 Simulations for the Seoul Metropolitan Area: ( I ) Contributions of Precursor Emissions in the 2013 CAPSS Emissions Inventory (수도권 초미세먼지 농도모사: ( I ) 2013 CAPSS 배출량 목록의 전구물질별 기여도 추정)

  • CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality Model) simulations were carried out to estimate the potential range of contributions on surface $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations over the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) with the gaseous precursors and Primary Particulate Matters(PPM) available from a recent national emissions inventory. In detail, on top of a base simulation utilizing the 2013 Clean Air Policy Supporting System (CAPSS) emission inventory, a set of Brute Force Method (BFM) simulations after reducing anthropogenic $NO_x$, $SO_2$, $NH_3$, VOCs, and PPM emissions released from area, mobile, and point sources in SMA by 50% were performed in turn. Modeling results show that zero-out contributions(ZOC) of $NH_3$ and PPM emissions from SMA are as high as $4{\sim}5{\mu}g/m^3$ over the region during the modeling period. On the contrary, ZOC of local $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ emissions to SMA $PM_{2.5}$ are less than $1{\mu}g/m^3$. Moreover, model analyses indicate that a wintertime $NO_x$ reduction at least up to 50% increases SMA $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations, probably due to increased HNO3 formation and conversion to aerosols under more abundant ozone and radical conditions after the $NO_x$ reduction. However, a nation-wide $NO_x$ reduction decreased SMA $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations even during winter, which implies that nation-wide reductions would be more effective to curtail SMA $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations than localized efforts.

Laparoscopic Operation for Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome and Follow-up with 3-Dimensional Reconstructive CT - 1 Case Report - (상장간막동맥 증후군의 복강경 수술 및 3차원재건 복부 전산화단층촬영 영상을 이용한 추적관찰 -1예보고-)

  • Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare disorder caused by extrinsic compression of the third portion of the duodenum by the SMA. The operative treatment of choice is bypassing the obstructed duodenal segment by duodenojejunostomy. We report one case of SMA syndrome treated by laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy and followed up by 3D-reconstructive CT scan. A fifteen-year-old boy with intermittent vomiting and weight loss was admitted. Ultrasonography showed narrowing of the distance between the SMA and aorta. Hypotonic duodenography showed dilatation of duodenal third portion and barium stasis. On 3Dreconstructive CT scan, the angle between SMA and aorta was $37^{\circ}$. The postoperative course was uneventful. Three months later, he had gained 3 kg of weight and the angle between SMA and aorta increased to $38-39^{\circ}$ on 3D reconstructive CT scan. Laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy for bypassing the obstructive duodenum in SMA syndrome is a feasible and safe method.
