  • This study area has been contaminated by oils. To identify contaminated ranges and to assess the possibility of contamination dispersion, monitoring wells were installed and slug test, field soil permeability test, automatic or manual measurement of groundwater table, and groundwater quality analyses in field and laboratory were performed. In addition, a groundwater modeling program was used to assess the possibility of oil contamination dispersion, based on field data and groundwater quality data. The results showed that concentration of oil contaminants in groundwater have been decreased by dispersion and adsorption.

  • This study is focused on the characterization of an effective hydraulic conductivity in each hydrogeologic unit assumed as an equivalent continuum medium in the granitic area. Four boreholes of 3" diameter were installed and a Multi-packer system was facilitated in the selected borehole. Various in-situ tests including the fracture logging, constant injection and fall-off tests, slug and pulse tests were carried out. A hydrogeologic unit was defined into the upper and lower zones based on the variation of fracture properties and hydraulic conductivities. The difference of the result obtained by the various hydraulic tests and the effective characterization techniques on rock mass permeability are also discussed. The effective hydraulic conductivity of the upper unit was measured by two times(5.27E-10 m/s~7.57E-10 m/s) that of the lower unit(2.45E-10 m/s~6.81E-10 m/s)through the constant injection and fall-off tests.

  • The aim in this study is used to develop the remediation technologies for contaminated ground water. Slug, single well pumping and step-drawdown tests have been used to obtain hydraulic parameter estimates in the field. Slug tests yield hydraulic conductivity values using the Bouwer and Rice and C-B-P analysis methods. The mean and median hydraulic conductivity values of Bouwer and Rice method are $4.48{\times}10^{-3}$ and $1.16{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$, respectively. On the other hand, C-B-P method gave mean and median hydraulic conductivity values of $2.37{\times}10^{-3}$ and $7.09{\times}10^{-4}cm/sec$, respectively. These analyses show a trend for the Bouwer and Rice method to yield lower hydraulic conductivity values in low permeability zones of granite in the study area. Sing well pumping test data were calculated through type curve in GW7, GW12 and MW9 wells. It could be interpreted that the differences of hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity values between GW7 and GW12, MW9 is related with fault clays and fractures in the bedrock among the wells. Step-drawdown tests were carried out in the KDPW1 and KDPW2 wells. The hydraulic parameter of KDPW1 and KDPW2 showed very litter difference between the values. The study of hydraulic parameter estimates can be used to purify in contaminated groundwater.

  • Hydraulic falling head and slug tests were carried out in an alluvium aquifer using a borehole stability device. The hydraulic testing had proved difficult in alluvial formations of sands and gravels due to borehole collapse and unstable borehole walls within the test section. This study aims to improve the hydraulic test results by using a borehole stability device. The device can minimize the collapse of borehole walls, and the use of a filter with a constant opening ratio improves the calculations per unit area of the test section. Permeability obtained from the falling head test without a borehole stability device was 8.82 × 10−5m/sec. When the borehole stability device was installed in the same test section the measured permeability increased to 4.00 × 10−4m/sec, which is 4.5 times that obtained without the borehole device. The relatively low permeability obtained using the conventional test method is attributed to the presence of a fine-grained slime generated during drilling and a reduction of the test area in the test interval due to a gradual collapse of the borehole walls. This study considers how the use of a borehole stability device to prevent borehole collapse can influence the results of hydraulic tests in alluvial formations. It is expected that the results can be used as a basis for improving the reliability and applicability of hydraulic tests performed in alluvial aquifers.

  • The oceanic tides have an effect on groundwater levels in coastal fractured rock aquifers. The observed groundwater table fluctuations caused by the effective stress through an aquifer are shown as sine curves similar with tidal fluctuation. To estimate a hydrogeologic parameter, tidal method is utilized with groundwater level fluctuations of two monitoring wells. Cross correlation function is used to calculate time lags between observed groundwater levels and tide, and the deeper well shows longer time lag. The storage coefficients calculated by using tidal efficiency and time lag show large differences. The storage coefficients obtained by using time lags are close to the result of slug test, and that of the deeper well shows closer value by slug test. The tidal efficiency is unsatisfied to apply in the tidal method because of an effect of phreatic aquifer and the vertical flow of groundwater through fractured confining bed. This tidal method can be an economical and effective way to define the parameter by considering the location of observation well and hydrogeologic characteristics of a coastal aquifer.

  • The mechanical dispersion which dominates solute transport in porous media is caused by the difference in flow velocity within pores. Longitudinal dispersion coefficient and longitudinal dispersivity that are hydro-dispersive parameters of advection-dispersion equation can only be obtained by experiment. Hydraulic mean radius that represents the amount and intensity of flowing water within pores can be obtained by the formula using the factors for physical properties. A slug injection test was conducted and a power type empirical formula for obtaining a longitudinal dispersivity using a hydraulic mean radius in rockfill porous media was derived. It is possible to obtain the longitudinal dispersivity depending on transport distance because it contains a formula for a scale constant, and expected to be applicable to waterways filled with homogeneous gravel and small flow rate.

  • In this paper, experimental data on flow pattern transition of inclination angles from 0-90 are presented. A test section is constructed 2 mm long and I.D 1inch using transparent material. The test section is supported by aluminum frame that can be placed with any arbitrary inclined angles. The air-water two-phase flow is observed at room temperature and atmospheric condition using both high speed camera and void impedance meter. The signal is sampled with sampling rate 1kHz and is analyzed under fully-developed condition. Based on experimental data, flow pattern maps are made for various inclination angles. As increasing the inclination angels from 0 to 90, the flow pattern transitions on the plane jg-jf are changed, such as stratified flow to plug flow or slug flow or plug flow to bubbly flow. The transition lines between pattern regimes are moved or sometimes disappeared due to its inclined angle.

  • To analyze the anisotropic characteristics of fractured aquifer, variations of streaming potential were measured during and after pumping over several wells at the two test sites. Surface electrical resistivity survey, normal resistivity logging, and slug test were performed at the wells to identify the hydrogeological structure. Applying the results to the recently suggested model, the aquifer of the two test sites showed confined characteristics. Anisotropic direction appeared in using equi-potential maps from self-potential monitoring results matched well with the results of the hydrogeological test. The self-potential monitoring method adopted in this study would be useful for providing a more reliable information on the anisotropy of aquifer in the pumping test at single well.

  • Microfluidic radioimmunoassay (RIA) platform called µ-RIA spends less reagent and shorter reaction time for the analysis compared to the conventional tube-based radioimmunoassay. This study reported the design of µ-RIA chips optimized for the gamma counter which could measure the small samples of radioactive materials automatically. Compared with the previous study, the µ-RIA chips developed in this study were designed to be compatible with conventional RIA test tubes. And, the automatic gamma counter could detect radioactivity from the 125I labeled anti-PSA attached to the chips. Effects of the multi-layer microchannels and two-phase flow in the µ-RIA chips were investigated in this study. The measured radioactivity from the 125I labeled anti-PSA was linearly proportional to the number of stacked chips, representing that the radioactivity in µ-RIA platform could be amplified by designing the chips with multi-layers. In addition, we designed µ-RIA chip to generate liquid-gas plug flow inside the microfluidic channel. The plug flow can promote binding of the biomolecules onto the microfluidic channel surface with recirculation in the liquid phase. The ratio of liquid slug and air slug length was 1 : 1 when the 125I labeled anti-PSA and the air were injected at 1 and 35 µL/min, respectively, exhibiting 1.6 times higher biomolecule attachment compared to the microfluidic chip without the air injection. This experimental result indicated that the biomolecular reaction was improved by generating liquid-gas slugs inside the microfluidic channel. In this study, we presented a novel µ-RIA chips that is compatible with the conventional gamma counter with automated sampler. Therefore, high-throughput radioimmunoassay can be carried out by the automatic measurement of radioactivity with reduced radiowaste generation. We expect the µ-RIA platform can successfully replace conventional tube-based radioimmunoassay in the future.

  • In order to determine the enthalpy profile in the high temperature transpiration cooling test facility for the air-breating engine compartments, theoretical calculation and measurement for the flow of the test section are performed. The mass averaged enthalpy value determined by the heat balance and sonic throat methods is 10 MJ/kg. The centerline enthalpy value measured using the slug type copper calorimeter is 15 MJ/kg. Typically, the ratio of centerline and mass averaged enthalpy should be varies from 1.4 to 4. This facility has lower bound of enthalpy profile. It will be effective in testing of high temperature transpiration cooling.
