In constructing a slurry trench cutoff wall, a thin but relatively impermeable layer called filter cake can be formed on the excavation surface. The filter cake significantly influences the result of slug test analysis in the cutoff wall. This study is to examine the effect of filter cake on evaluating in situ hydraulic conductivity of the vertical cutoff wall along with slug test analyses. The numerical program Slug_3D was modified to take filter cake into account in the slug test simulation. With consideration of filter cake, the type curve method and the modified line-fitting method were used to reanalyze the case study taken from a landfill site. The previous results achieved by Choi and Daniel (2006b) without consideration of filter cake have been compared with the results in this study. The considerable difference between the two results shows the necessity of considering the filter cake in practice.

In constructing a slurry trench cutoff wall, bentonite-water slurry is used to secure the stability of sidewalls during excavation before the wall is completed by backfilling. Unexpectedly, a thin but relatively impermeable layer called filter cake can be formed on the excavation surface, which significantly influences the result of slug test analysis in the cutoff wall if not considered. This study is to examine the effect of filter cake on evaluating hydraulic conductivity of the vertical cutoff wall through slug test analysis with the aid of the verified numerical program Slug_3D. The no-flux boundary conditions were adopted in Slug_3D to simulate the filter cake on the interface between the wall and the natural soil. A new set of type curves were built for applying the type curve method. New modification factors were obtained for using the modified line-fitting method. With consideration of filter cake, the type curve method and the modified line-fitting method were adopted to reanalyze the case study taken from EMCON (1995). The previous results achieved by Choi and Daniel (2006) without consideration of filter cake were compared with the present results obtained in this paper. The comparison emphasizes the necessity of considering filter cake when analyzing slug test results in vertical cutoff walls.
Slug tests can be adopted to estimate hydraulic conductivity of the slurry trench wall backfill for its abilities to reflect the in-situ performance of the construction. A comprehensive three-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate the slug test in a slurry trench wall considering the presence of bentonite cake on the interface boundaries between the wall and the surrounding soil formation. Influential factors such as wall width (i.e., proximity of wall boundary), well deviation, vertical position of well intake section, compressibility of wall backfill, etc. are taken into account in the model. A series of simulation results are examined to evaluate the bentonite cake effect in analyzing practical slug test results in the slurry trench wall. The results show that the modified line-fitting method can be used without any correction factor for the slug test in the slurry trench wall with the presence of bentonite cake. A case study is reanalyzed with the assumption of existing bentonite cake. The results are compared with the previously reported results by the approaches assuming no bentonite cake (constant-head boundary) or upper-bound solution (no-flux boundary). The case study demonstrates the bentonite cake effect and the validity of the modified line-fitting method in the estimation of the hydraulic conductivity of the slurry wall backfill.

The slug test by adding water to well and measuring falling head was conducted to investigate the hydrogeological property of unsaturated or partially saturated mine tailings in the Imgi abandoned mine in Busan. In case that wells were installed with a full screen through two layers with different hydraulic properties, Bouwer and Rice method was useful to estimate the hydraulic conductivity and the depth of mine tailings. In particular, when groundwater dried out in the dry season, the slug test performed by adding water into well to form artificial water table and then conducting falling head test produced the reasonable hydraulic conductivity values. The slug test using falling head test can be an alternative to investigate the hydrogeological property of abandoned mine tailings.

Slug and pumping tests have been widely used to obtain hydraulic parameter estimates in the field. Although a variety of sources of error and uncertainty can be involved in the course of the test performance and data analysis, serious considerations on these sources are often neglected. In this study these various sources of error and uncertainty are analyzed or discussed using repeated slug and pumping test data and some guide lines are suggested to improve quality of parameter estimates from the slug and pumping tests.

Slug tests are the most widely used field method for quantification of hydraulic conductivity of porous media. Well recovery is affected by well casing, borehole radii, screened length, hydraulic conductivity, and specific storage of porous media. In this study, a new slug tests model was developed through finite element approximation and the validity and usefulness of the model were tested in various ways. Water level fluctuation in a well under slug test and cons-equent groundwater flow in the surrounding porous medium were appropriately coupled through estimation of well-flux using an iteration technique. Numerical accuracy of the model was verified using the Cooper et al. (1967) solution. The model has advantages in simulations for monitored slug tests, partial penetration, and inclusion of storage factor. Volume coverage of slug tests is significantly affected by storage factor. Magnitude and speed of propagation of head changes from a well increases as storage factor becomes low. It will be beneficial to use type curves of monitored head transients in the surrounding porous formation for estimation of specific storage. As the vertical component of groundwater flow is enhanced, the influence of storage factor on well recovery decreases. For a radial-vertical flow around a partially penetrated well, deviations between hydraulic estimates by various methods and data selection of recovery curve are negligible on practical purposes, whereas the deviations are somewhat significant for a radial flow.

In this paper, the role of intermediate cover soils with respect to the leachate and gas flow is investigated from various field investigations and the hydraulic conductivity of the disposed waste is obtained using pumping and slug tests. From the results of field investigations, it was found that the flow of leachate and gas is prevented by the buried cover soils. The hydraulic conductivities of field pumping test and slug tests are well matched and stayed in the range of hydraulic conductivities of well compacted wastes in the literature.
In this paper, the transmissivities obtained from the pulse test, the slug test and the constant head test were compared each other to assess an applicability and a reliability of the hydrogeological test method, which are commonly used to derive the hydrogeological properties of a crystalline rock at un underground research facility. When comparing the results of the pulse test and the slug test, the transmissivities were very similar in the entire test section of the medium. However, there was a little discrepancy in the results in the areas where the permeability is relatively high. The results of the constant head test on the same section showed the lower transmissivity than the results of the pulse test and the slug test on the highly permeable section. This difference in permeability was considered to be due to the difference in the radius of the hydraulic effect applied in each hydraulic test. When the heterogenetic distribution of fracture affects the hydrogeological properties on crystalline rock, it is believed that the hydrogeological characteristics can be explained through a constant head test or a constant flow rate test with a large hydraulic effective radius, as well as a pulse and a slug test that can identify hydrogeological properties in a relatively short time.
