  • The results of an experimental investigation on the co-firing characteristics and slagging behavior of dried and hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge, sub-bituminous coal, and wood pellet in a fluidized bed were presented. Combustion tests were conducted in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed system at the uniform fuel-air equivalence ratio, air flow rate, and initial bed temperature to measure bed temperature distribution and combustion gas composition. 4 different fuel blending cases were prepared by mixing sewage sludge fuels with coal and wood pellet with the ratio of 50 : 50 by the heating value. $NO_x$ was mostly NO than $NO_2$ and measured in the range of 400 to 600 ppm in all cases. $SO_2$ was considered to be affected mostly by the sulfur content of the sewage sludge fuels. The cases of hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge mixture showed slightly less $SO_2$ emission but higher fuel-N conversion than the dried sewage sludge mixing cases. The result of fly ash composition analysis implied that the sewage sludge fuels would increase the possibility of slagging/fouling considering the contents of alkali species, such as Na, K, P. Between the two different sewage sludge fuels, dried sewage sludge fuel was expected to have the more severe impact on slagging/fouling behavior than hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge fuel.

  • In this paper, the effects of water contents on combustion characteristics of paper sludge and capacity of fluidized bed combustor(FBC) were investigated using 0.26m diameter, 1.75m height pilot-plant scale combustor. Combustion tests of paper sludge containing water contents between 40wt% and 50wt% were performed. The temperature and emission variation, the pressure inside combustor were measured to monitor the fluidization quality. The experimental results showed that 30kg/hr feeding rate of sludge containing water up to 45wt% was preferable for this system. Sludge loading rate, heat release rate were calculated from experimental data as major parameters showing FBC capacity. Comparsion with sludge loading rate from other source was also performed

  • The catalytic effect of waterworks sludge on NOx removal in $BaTiO_3$pellets and sludge pellets combined packed-bed plasma reactor with plate-plate electrode geometry is measured for the various conditions. NOx removal rate is about 90[%] at $BaTiO_3$-sludge combined reactor used fresh sludge. $NO_2$ and $O_3$ as byproducts are significantly generated in only $BaTiO_3$ packed-bed plasma reactor, however, in $BaTiO_3$-sludge combined packed-bed reactor, $NO_2$ and $O_3$ are completely removed while $CO_2$ as by-products are observed from FTIR spectra. $NO_2$ and $O_3$ seem to react with metallic molecules, metal oxide, and organic compounds that are generally chlorophyll included in sludge. NOx removal rate increases with $O_2$ concentration increasing. Removal rates $NO_2$ and $O_3$ are independent of operating time and repetition measurement times.

  • Combustion performance of an internally cycloned circulating fluidized bed for paper sludge was discussed through a series of batch type experiments. Operation parameters such as water content, feeding mass of sludge and secondary air injection rate were varied to find out the effect on the combustion performance, which was examined with carbon conversion rate and pollutant emission such as CO and NOx. A conventional solid fuel reaction was observed in the experiments of varying water content and feeding mass of the sludge, which is characterized with kinetic limited reaction zone, diffusion limited reaction zone and transition zone. Secondary air injection with swirl enhances the mixing of the gas phase as well as the solid phase, and improves combustion efficiency accompanied with higher carbon conversion rate and lower pollutant emission rate.

  • The wastewater treatment with a two-phase expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) system for anaerobic degradation of acetate, benzoate, terephtalate and p-toluate from purified terephtalic acid (PTA) production was studied. The feasibility and effectiveness of the system was evaluated in terms of organic oxidation by chemical oxygen demand (COD), gas production, bacterial adaptability and stability in the granular sludge. Average removal efficiencies 93.5% and 72.7% were achieved in the EGSB reactors under volumetric loading rates of $1.0-15kg-COD/m^3/day$ and terephtalate and p-toluate of 351-526 mg/L, respectively. Gas production reached total methane production rate of 0.30 L/g-COD under these conditions in the sequential EGSB reactor system. Higher strength influent COD concentration above 4.8 g-COD/L related to field conditions was fed to observe the disturbance of the EGSB reactors.

  • The characteristics of food wastewater treatment in an anaerobic packed bed reactor (APBR) with polyurethane as a packing material and sludge bed reactor (ASBR) was studied. The reactor of 9cm-ID, 150cm-height was fed in a continuous mode from bottom of reactor. For the purpose of constant temperature of reactor, water jacket was installed. The used packing materials was polyurethane sponge foam. Methane which was produced by decomposed organics collected at the top of the reactor for using as a fuel. The substrates used were synthetic, mixed and food wastewater. For the acclimatization of microorganisms, mixed wastewater was used. The major analyses were gas production, COD, pH and volatile acids. Based upon the completed works, the results are as follows: When food wastewater was fed the quantity of produced gas was less than that of synthetic wastewater, but food process saw higher methane content than synthetic process. As well as COD removal efficiency of food process reached at about 85%. In aspect of effluent volatile acid, food process showed low concentration of below 500 mg/l, therefore anaerobic reaction stabled. Conclusively food wastewater used can be digested by anaerobic treatment, especially anaerobic packed bed reactor showed 82% of COD removal, 75% of methane content, 10 l of gas production, and anaerobic sludge bed reactor did 79% of COD removal, 75% of methane content, 81 of gas production at 4 kgCOD/m$^3$day, 36$\circ$C.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the characteristics of limestone calcination and sulfation in a fluidized bed reactor with bed temperature and air velocity. The experimental results were presented as follows ; First, the bed temperature had a great influence on the calcination and the sulphur retention of limestone and paper sludge. In paper sludge, the optimum conditions in calcination and desulfurization temperature was at $800^{\circ}C$ and in natural limestone, that was at $850^{\circ}C$ or $900^{\circ}C$. Second, as air velocity increased, the specific surface area of particles decreased. But the difference of surface area according to air velocity was not too large. The specific surface area of paper sludge was larger than that of natural limestone. Third, as air velocity increased, the absorbed amount of sulfur dioxide decreased. And the absorbed amount of sulfur dioxide by paper sludge was larger than that of by natural limestone. Therefore, we knew that paper sludge was excellent absorbent and bed temperature had a great important variable on the calcination and sulphur retention in a fluidized bed.

  • Cold bed and $30kW_{th}$ pilot bed tests using circulating fluidized bed (CFB) were conducted to apply oxy-fuel technology for waste sludge combustion as a carbon capture and storage technology. In cold bed test, the minimum fluidization velocity ($u_{mf}$) and superficial velocity for fast fluidization was determined as 0.120 m/s and 2.5 m/s, respectively. In the pilot test, air and oxy-fuel combustion experiments for waste sludge were conducted using CFB unit. The flue-gas temperature in 21~25% oxy-fuel combustion was higher than that of air and up to 30% oxy-fuel combustion. In addition, the concentration of carbon dioxide was more than 80% with the oxygen injection range from 21% to 25% in oxy-fuel CFB waste sludge combustion.

  • Paper sludges collected from three different paper mills were physico-chemically analyzed in order to use them as raw materials for making bed soils and seedling pots. The sludge from a fine paper mill contained lots of inorganic pigment particles used for coating, as those from a newsprint mill and a tissue mill had not. It was clearly through XRD analysis confirmed that all sludges included calcium carbonate. The paper sludge from the tissue mill contained the greatest amount of particles, which would contribute to water absorption and nutrient storage. The sludge from the fine paper mill had the highest density due to many inorganic elements. While the ash content and the total nitrogen content were the highest in the sludge from the fine paper mill, the C/N ratio was the lowest in the fine paper mill sludge. All sludges seemed to have insufficient contents of potassium. The sludges from the newsprint mill and the tissue mill showed more silicon contents than that from the fine paper mill. It was concluded that the sludge from the fine paper mill would be able to be the most efficient raw materials for making bed soils and seedling pots and the other two sludges would be more efficient for intensive culture for crops such as rice and grain with additional supplement of nitrogen and other nutrients.

  • In this study, drying and carbonization experiment was conducted in a fluidized bed reactor according to the variations in gas velocity, particle size, and reactor temperature. As a result, the weight loss rates of sludge by drying in the fixed bed and fluidized bed type dryer showed that drying in the fluidized bed was about 6 times faster than drying in the fixed bed, and the weight loss rates of sludge by carbonization in the fixed bed and fluidized bed type reactor showed that carbonization in the fluidized bed was about 4 times faster than drying in the fixed bed. This implies that carbonization in the fluidized bed was completed within 10 minutes. Although the amount of char decreased with the increase of carboniration temperature, the amount of char became similar at upper 873K. Also, the amount of char decreased with increasing gas velocity. Consequently, it could be efficient that slow fluidization should be maintained within the range of fluidization in case of fluidized carbonization of sewage sludge at 873K.
